"For Keeps spotlights interesting, unusual or unexpected collections of things and the people who keep them."This episode of MetaPod turns the spotlight around on David Peterkofsky and his podcast For Keeps, which explores the world of collecting. As you might expect, you'll discover that people collect some fairly unusual things. However, For Keeps is more than a show about stuff."Really the idea of how these people relate to the things they have collected is what drew me to the idea," he explains about the origin of the For Keeps podcast. In this conversation, David discusses the connections that collectors have with their collections. He shares what he has learned collectors have in common, irrespective of the types of things collected. You'll also hear some of the stories behind episodes of For Keeps. Wendy and David discuss how collectors view the Internet and its impact on collecting and the communities around collections. Lastly, David entertains the idea of featuring an NFT collector on the podcast. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. day, we talk Our Friend, Martin, the 1999 animated film that celebrates the life of MLK Jr. This film, oftentimes shown in the classroom, takes viewers on a journey as a pair of best friends goes back in time through the power of magic and introduces them to Reverend King at pivotal moments of his life. It also shows us what happens when the friends try to alter the future. We discuss the importance of the film to black elementary students, the idolization of historical figures, generational trauma, and much more. One note: Courtney mentiones that she believes Our Friend, Martin was viewed specifically because her school was majority Black, but we've since learned that it might have been essential viewing in a lot of areas in the South (Black majority school or not). Join me this week as we take a look at the hospitals of New York City, past and present. We’ll visit the earliest clinics that were created two centuries ago to treat New Yorkers, explore the different kinds of hospitals that were developed around the turn of the 20th Century, and finally look at the hospitals of New York City today, including the large system run by the government of the City of New York. My guests will be Bert Hansen, Professor Emeritus of History at Baruch College, and archivist and heritage specialist Deidre Dinnigan, Principal of For-keeps Inc., a company that works with institutions and individuals to create and execute plans for projects that use historical content and materials. Segment 1 Jeff introduces the first guest of the show, Bert Hansen, originally a Chicagoan, Bert currently lives in Chelsea. Bert walks through his educational leap from Science to Medical history, the functions of hospitals and doctors before the twentieth century, the first established hospitals in New York City and their founders, the function of early medical centers labeled as ‘dispensaries’, and the architecture of the buildings that are still standing today. Segment 2 The conversation continues with the talk of French biologist Louis Pasteur, the boom of hospitals and innovations in healthcare at the end of the nineteenth century due to medical advancements, maternity hospitals, the importance of architecture in these early hospitals, an overview of the first major hospital complexes constructed in the early twentieth century, the commission of artists by the New York government to create murals, some withstanding today, and the shift in hospital construction in recent history. Segment 3 Jeff introduces the second guest of the show, Deidre Dinnigan, who talks about her history transitioning from the Caribbean to New York as a young girl and about her education, and how she gained passion for her current line of work as well as how she came to hold the current title of ‘heritagist’. Deidre discusses the nature of her work with the organization ‘New York City Health + Hospitals’ which transitions into the conversation in the next segment. Segment 4 Deidre outlines the functions of ‘For Keeps’ and current projects she’s working on right now, giving out where listeners can find out more information. She then talks about when New York City got into the business of medical centers and healthcare, starting back with Bellevue in the eighteenth century passing through the nineteenth century, leaving a footnote with charities and organizations laying down the foundations for hospitals and other public facilities like prisons and mental institutions, all the way into the twentieth century, the start of New York investing into medicine. She also speaks on the first hospital established in Brooklyn, covering other boroughs as well, and also the many specialty hospitals in New York City.
The Field Mice special with Mark Dobson in conversation with David Eastaugh The Field Mice initially formed as a duo from South London suburb of Mitcham comprising Robert Wratten (for vocals and guitar) and Michael Hiscock (on bass guitar). The group's first EP, Emma's House, was released in November 1988, and reached number 20 in the UK Independent Chart. But it was with their second single "Sensitive" that they first received significant critical attention, giving them a top-20 indie hit and with a subsequent placing in John Peel's 1989 Festive 50. Debut mini-album Snowball reached number 3 on the indie albums chart. The original duo were joined by Harvey Williams(of Another Sunny Day) on guitar: the first fruits of this new line-up being the Skywriting mini-LP and in late 1990 the band expanded to include Annemari Davies on vocals, keyboards and guitar and Mark Dobson on drums. This five-piece line-up later recorded what was to be their final album (but their first full length for Sarah Records), For Keeps. Over a three-year career the band were often dogged with the reputation of having a post-C86 indie pop or generic Sarah Records sound despite producing tracks with numerous styles and influences. Early singles and even their sleeves harked back to early Factory Records bands such as New Order and The Wake, with many tracks often featuring sequencers and samples. Many of the group's recordings, notably "Triangle" and their epic seven-minute swan song, "Missing the Moon", displayed a strong influence from the popular dance music of the time. Most of the group's records were produced by Ian Catt, who later went on to develop the pop dance sound of "Missing The Moon" further with Saint Etienne (whose second single was a cover version of The Field Mice's "Let's Kiss and Make Up").
I want to introduce you to one of the most curious podcasts out there. It’s my friend’s show called For Keeps. It has nothing to do with Pretend, but I think you’ll love it. David Peterkofsky, the host of For Keeps, finds some of the world's most interesting collectors and tells the stories behind their collections. This episode is one of my favorites. It’s about a man who was stalking John Lennon outside of the Dakota apartment building in New York City—but it’s not who you think it is. If you’re a Beatles fan, you’re going to find this episode insanely interesting. - Paul Goresh's New York Daily News obituary • Opening theme: "Keepers" by Still Flyin' • Closing theme: "Slow Draw/Feeling In My Heart" by Eric Frisch• Additional music by Chad Crouch and Walty • www.forkeepspodcast.com - Support for this episode is brought to you by MyWallSt. All our listeners can access the entire MyWallSt app for free and use it for 30days instead of the normal 7 days.
