During FuMPFest 2024 members of The FuMP were invited to Escape from the Secret Lab by Dr. Milo T. Pinkerton of the Consortium of Genius. This was a command performance that Devo Spice, Luke Ski, Insane Ian, and Chris Mezzolesta took part in. If they did well they'd be spared. If not, they would be crushed under a 16 ton weight. One of the challenges was an Instant Song, where the performers were required to come up with a song "on the spot." So Chris provided a funky riff on the guitar while Devo, Ian, and Luke each did short verses about their experiences being kidnapped by the COG. This is a recording of that performance. We are proud to report that The FuMP was spared. This recorded is just one of many you can hear on the new FuMPFest 2024 - Live! 2-CD compilation! The album features two hours of music recorded at FuMPFest 2024 and features performances by Pastor Hastur, Holy Bongwater, 2d6, Ross Childs, Steve Goodie, Carla Ulbruch, and our guest of honor The Consortium of Genius! When Loki season 1 was finishing up, things were pointing towards the main villain being a variation of the comics character Kang, and "BANG!" by AJR was already a hit on the radio at the time. So in a fit of inspiration, I watched the final episode of the season when it aired, then IMMEDIATELY wrote this parody, and released it on YouTube THE VERY NEXT DAY. Probably the quickest turn around I've ever done on a pop culture song. However, I never got to release it to the FuMP because of that quick turn around. So because season 2 of Loki was just announced (and also, more pertinent to this recording in particular, the FuMPFeST live compilation is due out soon) I decided to post this live version here now. I hope to announce the release of the Kickstarter on the next episode. Second, you'll note that this episode is quite a bit shorter than past shows. After much debate, I decided to once again retire the format I've been working on for the past year. There was a LOT that I loved about that format. I've actually been pretty giddy about it. But the pros just didn't outweigh the cons. You can read about my decision in my blog on my website. That said, the Pub Stories are not exactly going away. If you want to keep listening to my Pub Stories, then join my Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. I plan to release two episodes per month in the Spring and Fall season. However, they will be shorter episodes like this and they will focus almost exclusively on my music. You can get that with any pledge on Patreon, for just five buck a month. And I also plan to post at least one episode per month in the PubSong.com feed. At least through the end of the Spring season. So what happens to the stories I still have left to publish? Because I do have a few. Those will move to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I'll add them to every 2-3 episodes. So again, thank you for all of your support. May 28: The Lost Druid, Avondale Estates, GA @ I was gonna do a story about Tough Times in this show. But I realized I already highlighted it in show #217. It's even called Tough Times. 3:51 - STORY OF SERENITY VALLEY WALTZ “Serenity Valley Waltz” changed everything for me. I was not confident I could write a song on command. Heck, I'm still not. But I am MORE confident. Mikey Mason and I met at a sports bar in Chicago for FuMPFest a few years back. Mikey asked if I'd be interested in starting a podcast where we wrote a song for each episode of Firefly. I didn't think I could do it. I was nervous as hell, but I wanted to try. I wanted to flex my songwriting muscles and get better. What better way! So the first episode we watched was “Serenity”. It's the two-hour introduction to the characters. I remember when I first watched it, I was left in a kind of daze. I didn't know what to think about the episode. When I rewatched it, one of the things that stuck out to me was the introductory scene. It's a flashback to one of the most-important battles of the Unification War. The Battle of Serenity Valley is when the Alliance finally beat back the Browncoats. ⅔ of the Independents died fighting in that battle. The look of dejection on Malcolm Reynold's face when the Angels retreat is just incredible. It's also very appropriate. And then later in the episode when he talks and the season when he talks about Serenity Valley, you can tell there was trauma. The type that must be SO hard to get over. I mean, imagine fighting in a battle where ⅔ of your family and friends that you're fighting with end up dead. Hm. ⅔ is such a weird number. Imagine you're standing with 9 of your best friends and family. At the end of the battle, six of those people are no longer there. This is the type of stuff that I think about with the War in Ukraine. They're fighting hard. But the Russians are ruthless and evil. It's not just fellow soldiers there. It's family and friends. Imagine that. It makes me want to cry. That's where I was when I was writing “Serenity Valley Waltz”. Music is such a great healer. I wanted to write a song for the survivors. How did they do it? I imagine Mal, Zoe, Tracey and others sitting around the campfire singing this song, raising a glass to the fallen. The second verse is extra important to me too. Because it's a realization of the damage we can cause to one another when we don't believe. It was inspired a bit by the Me Too movement. But also by a couple friends who are very dear to me. It's also a universal truth. Sometimes we hurt those around us. Sometimes we just don't want to believe it. Either from their own ignorance or because they just don't trust you. Maybe because we're a bit dramatic at times or because they're in their own colored-glasses world. What's made a huge difference is my family. When I'm sad or hurting, I turn to them. But I learned the Serenity Prayer from my mom, who was drug and alcohol counselor. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.” That's what that last verse is for me. I'm not sure Mal found that peace in the show. But he definitely built a family around him. That too is his Serenity. We're up to 1982 in our series of 80s-themed episodes, and it's time to review another Facts of Life backdoor pilot! This one looks eerily similar to a previous backdoor pilot, as the boys of Stone Academy get another shot at a spinoff series! But this time instead of a school dance, the plot involves a school boxing tournament. (Back in 1982, viewers probably thought they were watching Rocky III.) And the cast has been expanded to include a pretty nurse, a scary kid named Mongo (probably working for Ming the Merciless), a cameo by (then unknown) Crispin Glover, and 80s supernerd Eddie Deezen! (You know Eddie from Grease, Wargames, and a billion other things. He out-nerds us all.) Did it all work? Of course not. But it's magnificent. Also: 80s trivia with the ESO Network Board of Directors, and Happy Birthday to Tootie's real life mom. Next week: 1983. Of course. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! Now before we make our final preparations for FumpFest and DragonCon, we just have to launch our new fashion line for golfing rodents. (Yes, Kenny Loggins will perform "I'm Alright" at the runway show.)

Time to get back in the pool, kids -- Kornflake is bringing her Dementia Water Aerobics class to FumpFest 2016! It's a whole weekend of comedy music, featuring a bunch of our favorite silly humans. (The lineup includes Paul and Storm, Carrie Dahlby, Devo Spice, Dino-Mike, Rob Paravonian, Seamonkey, Tim Cavanagh, Worm Quartet, and more!) Chicago will never be the same. Also: We catch up with our old pal (and Adventure Time artist) Andy Ristaino, we find cats (actual live cats) in a museum, and we murder a beach ball at a Joan Jett concert. It's been a busy and ridiculous week.

We're back from a long day of 1980s-style silliness in the middle of Kornflake's home state of New Hampshire. Our first stop was Funspot, a giant amazing arcade packed with dozens of classic video and pinball games from decades ago. Alas, there was no Swimmer or Donkey Kong Junior. But there was plenty of Frogger, Dig Dug, Tron, Gorf, Donkey Kong (as seen in the movie The King of Kong), Crazy Kong (a weird alternate version of Donkey Kong), and just about everything else. Get yourself a billion tokens and spend the day. Our next stop was... a Journey concert. Because Journey is awesome. Just admit it to yourself and move on. And we have a friendly reminder that FuMPFest (our favorite funny music convention) is almost here (August 26-28 in Chicago), and Kornflake will be there with Dementia Water Aerobics! Get your tickets and room reservations now, kids! Also: It's Kevin Smith's birthday, and we're encouraging everyone to celebrate by shutting up, just like Silent Bob.

Kevin and Kornflake have one more item of business to discuss from FuMPFeST, as Kevin reveals that in the middle of this funny music convention, he sneaked off to a whole other convention! This was Mego Meet, a show dedicated to the Mego superhero dolls (sorry, action figures) of the 1970s. Found at Mego Meet: Kid Flash's boots, Tiny Titans creator Art Baltazar, an Ark II Halloween costume, and (according to a rumor started by some goofy podcast) Taylor Swift. The toy talk continues as we flip through a fun book called Rack Toys, which features page after page of bizarre cheapo toys from the 70s and 80s. (The Land of the Lost pinball game looks awesome, but we're baffled by the Love Boat Barber Shop set.) Then we look ahead to CONvergence, a big crazy convention happening Fourth of July weekend in Bloomington, Minnesota. Kevin will be there, mostly talking about Fangface. Meanwhile, Kornflake just wants you to enjoy a bowl of angry ice cream.

Kevin and Kornflake are back in Chickentown, but can't stop screaming about FuMPFeST! This week we review our whole crazy weekend at this funny music convention in Wheeling, Illinois (a town Kornflake would visit just to have breakfast). Highlights include: Kornflake's water breaking (what?), an Inspector Gadget chorus, Kenny Rogers-themed water aerobics, a Pod of Destiny field trip to see the Neo-Futurists, The Logan Awards, a shocking allegation from The Boobles, Dumb Parody Ideas, Dementia Smackdown Wrestling, Doornail spilling stuff, and the ancient art of "padlockigami." Plus, of course, performances by Insane Ian, Bad Teenage Moustache, TV's Kyle and Lindzilla, Tim Cavanagh, Drew Jacobs, the great Luke Ski, Steve Goodie, Carla Ulbrich, The Arrogant Worms, Smashy Claw, Matt Griffo, Todd Chappelle, Devo Spice, Carrie Dahlby, Power Salad, Rhiannon's Lark, and more! Also: Apparently we have to wear sparkly fairy wings this week. One of us is not happy about this.

Wow, we finally got one in while the movie was still in its opening weekend! Note: There’s one brief uncensored curse from Luke somewhere in the Inside Out section. I don’t have time to find it.   Please leave us feedback and otherwise interact with us at http://www.facebook.com/kyleandluke!

Kevin and Kornflake are back in Wheeling, Illinois for the second annual FuMPFeST comedy music convention! And we're joined by our regular giggling, coffee-spilling correspondent, Doornail! Also on the show this week: Alyssa (of Rhiannon's Lark), DJ Particle, and FuMPFeST performers Todd Chappelle and Carla Ulbrich! Plus cameos by Tim (aka Poohbear) and Blasted Bill! Topics of discussion include: Doornail and Alyssa's college days (breakfast was a rare event; being stared at creepily was not), Mad Mike's wine, Seamonkey's beer, dating Amish women, saying hello in Klingon, wearing a Snuggie at an Arrogant Worms concert, and an insane phone call with Insane Ian. (Plus lots of immature giggling about boobs, because we're so classy.) Note: This episode was recorded in the hallway just outside the main FuMPFeST concert room, so expect a little background noise here and there. And if you think there wasn't a maniac in a Spider-Man costume lurking around through the whole show... you are quite mistaken.

Also: Freezepop, Duran Duran, Petty Morals, the Somerville Ukulele Club, the Swedish Chef, Kornflake's all-time favorite edition of "Chickens in the News," and yet another trip into the Pudding Pages. Kevin and Kornflake are finally back in Chickentown, gulping down iced coffee and looking back at last month's awesome funny music convention, FumpFest. Topics include: Kevin's weird pre-FumpFest activities (involving gangsters, Gorf, and a triple dog dare), Kornflake's breakfast with Doctor Demento (do NOT try the fish heads at the buffet), the Logan Awards for Excellence in Comedy Music ('twas a clean sweep for the Bay City Rollers, at least in our dreams), more Dementia Smackdown Wrestling and last-minute Dementia Water Aerobics, Italian food prepared by a Kryptonian monkey, and a big glass of Smogberry Stout. You'll also hear the first ever "Bad Flopport of Destiny" triple-podcast, our exclusive interview with ShoEboX of the comedy synth punk band Worm Quartet (also featuring Doornail, the great Luke Ski, and Chris of Power Salad), and Kornflake's FumpFest-themed Top 4 1/2 List. Kornflake has a touch of FumpFest con crud, and Kevin is leaving for yet another convention (that'd be CONvergence in Minnesota)... which means you're not getting a regular Flopcast this week. But worry not, true believers -- here's something special we've been saving for you. Last year at DragonCon, Kevin was on a panel called the Super Vehicle Showdown -- an imaginary tournament of classic movie and TV vehicles (such as KITT, the Batmobile, and the General Lee). Also on the panel: Michael Gordon, Van Allen Plexico, Gary Mitchel, and Joe Crowe (plus a roomful of crazy people). This was already one of the silliest panels ever... and then it devolved, Dr. Zaius-style, into something way sillier. Stick around for... Monkeys vs. Minions. And Kornflake fans -- you WILL hear Kornflake this week too, despite our doctor's recommendations. (Our doctor is a rubber chicken, and we usually just ignore it.)

Despite the pleas of terrified citizens everywhere, it finally happened: The Flopcast LIVE! June 22, in Wheeling, Illinois, Kevin and Kornflake were onstage at FumpFest, a convention dedicated to funny music (and also, apparently, goofy podcasts). In front of a captive audience (oh yes, we locked the doors), we presented National Whatever Day (which may have involved eating an escalator), Chickens in the News (a special Chicago-themed edition), and What's in the Bag (really just an excuse to throw stuff at people). Joining us onstage were special guests Chris of Power Salad, the great Luke Ski, and of course, Doornail. (Guess which one of our special guests giggled nonstop and fell on the floor?) Then stay tuned for a post-show bonus clip: our friend Dan Hart, also live onstage at FumpFest, performing during Dr. Demento's Festival of Dementia! Now excuse us; we have to go backstage to meet and greet a bunch of stupid radio contest winners.

By the time you're reading this, Kevin and Kornflake will be in Chicago for FumpFest! But here's the last show we recorded before surrendering the studio to a big angry yak, so it could do its own podcast, which is called "Yak Talk." But we digress. This week on The Flopcast: For National Catfish Day, Kornflake teaches us something weird about catfish; then in our "Chickens in the News" segment, we learn something weird about chickens (but less weird than the catfish thing). We also look forward to CONvergence, which is happening 4th of July weekend in Minneapolis! Kevin will be on panels discussing important stuff like Batman comics; the Skepchicks will teach us about science, bugs, and licking things; and if that doesn't sound geeky enough, we might even run into Counselor Deanna Troi.

FumpFest also has the Logan Awards (for excellence in comedy music), live onstage podcasts (including The Flopcast!), Dementia Smackdown Wrestling (time for Kornflake to defend her title), and...
