As the frontman of John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, Cafferty rose to prominence with the soundtrack to the 1983 failed studio movie turned HBO cult classic "Eddie and the Cruisers". “On the Dark Side” became a hit, topping the rock charts. It went top ten on the Hot 100. His music, eerily close to the sound of Bruce Springsteen, helped define a genre - heartland rock with an East Coast rock and roll, let's-cruise-the-beach-roads, sweaty, smoky rock bar vibe. While not a massive star, Cafferty maintained a long touring career, especially in the Northeastern U.S., where he and his band have a devoted fan base. He has released the band's first new album since 1988. What did he bring? We listen together. I hadn't heard the album until I recorded this podcast. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. The Rhode Island rockers put out their first "Greatest Hits" album in 2022 on Iconoclassic Records. In addition to band founder Cafferty, two original members remain in the group. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band hit their stride in the early and mid-1980's with four Top 10 songs. Many people know the band from the tremendous success of the Eddie and The Cruisers movie soundtrack. Throughout the years, that band had 11 singles land on the music charts. Multi-award winning program director Ray White sat down with John in January of 2012, shortly after the passing of his good friend Clarence Clemons - at a tribute show, to talk about The Big Man and the Jersey Shore music vibe. John's recently released several singles by his band. In our showcase segment we feature another Jersey band that's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Bon Jovi. Their latest album is Forever and it's full of rock songs and power ballads. We'll also feature the latest from another superstar from just across the border in Pennsylvania who unfortunately split with his longtime musical partner. Daryl Hall has his first album out since parting with John Oates, which is called "D". The CAT rocks you on this episode as we focus on the Jersey to the Philly sounds!!

One of the iconic British new wave bands from the MTV era was the pop duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, known as the Eurythmics. Lennox and Stewart began playing together in the punk scene in 1976, first as a part of the band the Catch, and later as the Tourists. The duo were drawn to electronics and synthesizer music, and became the Eurythmics in 1980. While their first album, “In the Garden,” was not a commercial success, they exploded in popularity with their second studio album, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).Surprisingly, the album was made with limited means. They recorded in an attic in north London where the duo both lived and worked. They also recorded in a room in the Church Studios in London. Most tracks were recorded on an 8-track tape machine. Much of the instrumentation consisted of synthesizers and drum computers. Costs for the album ran around 5,000 pounds. The synth heavy music pairing with Lennox's almost operatic voice found a receptive audience. The power of video was a noticeable contributor as well, with Lennox's striking red hair and androgynous look. The title track was particularly successful, becoming one of the iconic songs of the '80's. The Eurythmics would be a mainstay of early 80's rock. While Lennox and Stewart would split in 1990, with Lennox moving on to studio work and Stewart transitioning into a record producer, they would reunite from time to time to release new material and compilations.Lynch features this synth-pop powerhouse for this week's podcast. Love Is a StrangerThe opening track to the album was the second single released, but was actually a re-release. It originally came out in late 1982 but did not receive much airplay at the time. It would rise to number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and to number 6 on the UK Singles chart. This Is the HouseThis song has the appearance of a deeper cut because it did not achieve the same commercial traction as some other songs. It was also released ahead of the album, then re-released after the success of the title track. It utilizes some more traditional instruments, with Dave Stewart playing harmonica. The lyrics are ambiguous, discussing aspirations, opportunities, and the fickle nature of success. The WalkThe use of piano and string arrangements paired with an unusual time signature give this deeper cut a greater depth than some other tracks. The lyrics have a melancholy feel, with existential questioning and disillusionment. It is a nice contrast to some of the more synth-heavy pieces on the album.Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)The iconic title track is easily the group's most famous song, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite it's lasting impact on music, the song itself was written in a single evening. The surreal video received heavy rotation on the MTV music station, solidifying the band's success. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:On the Dark Side by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band (from the motion picture "Eddie and the Cruisers") John Cafferty contributed this song to the 60's-era music drama. He is often confused with Bruce Springsteen. STAFF PICKS:Trashed by Black SabbathWayne brings us a Black Sabbath song with a punk rock tempo. Ian Gillan, the original lead singer for Deep Purple, was on tap as the front man for the group at this time, a position he would hold for only one album and tour. The tour for this album featured a mock-up of Stonehenge, which would go on to be lampooned in the mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.”Walking In Your Footsteps by the PoliceBruce features a deeper cut from the Synchronicity album. This song compares the human race to the dinosaurs, and takes a lot of influence from world music. The science is more questionable, with lyrics referencing dinosaurs living “50 million years ago,” when they actually went extinct over 65 million years ago.Don't Cry by AsiaRob's staff pick is from the supergroup's second album, Alpha. It reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. While critics panned the album, it was a commercial success, reaching number 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. The song was a last-minute addition to the album for a stronger commercial appeal.Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie TylerLynch closes out the staff picks on a melancholy note. Jim Steinman, who was the writer for Meat Loaf's “Bat out of Hell,” also penned this one. Although the song had to be shortened for the single edit, it became Bonnie Tyler's biggest hit, spending four weeks at the top of the charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Stonehenge by Black SabbathThis instrumental piece is considered the inspiration for the “Stonehenge” skit in “This Is Spinal Tap.”
Let's go to the mall! But one specific mall that isn't there anymore! (Well, it's sort of still there, but not really.) We're joined by Gleaming the Tube's Kevin Cafferty to look back on the Lincoln Mall in Lincoln, Rhode Island (frighteningly close to Woonsocket). It wasn't the biggest mall, it wasn't the best mall, but it was our mall. And our Lincoln Mall memories include: Waldenbooks, our primary source of X-Men comics, Bloom County collections, and Tolkien; sketchy sausage samples at Hickory Farms; failed attempts to meet girls at the movies; the freaky pet store; the inexplicable organ store; the restaurant no one went to (Roast House); the restaurant everyone went to, because there were two of them in the same mall (Papa Gino's); the neverending weirdness of Spencer Gifts; and the glory of the Dream Machine video arcade. Also: Andre the Giant eating spaghetti! The sticker girl phenomenon! Our first comic book shop experiences! Our first dishwashing experiences! Record store employees with attitudes! Randy the Talking Reindeer! The Challenge of the Checkers Champion! A mall visit from Spider-Man! A ring of car stereo thieves! Rhode Island's own John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band! And yikes, so much more... Even if you never visited the Lincoln Mall, we know there's a mall or two in your past, so you can relate. In a way, we're all still lost among the overflowing bins of cheap junk at Kay Bee Toys. Kevin's podcast about movies with skateboarding, Gleaming the Tube! And our regular links... In this episode, my friend Sherry Thomas and I are talking ‘Eddie and the Cruisers', the 1983 cult classic film about a fictional early 1960s rock ‘n roll band on the rise that virtually disappeared from the airwaves after their lead singer, Eddie Wilson, supposedly died in a car wreck following a dispute over the band's experimental second album, which was never released. Almost 20 years pass, and Eddie and the Cruisers are back on the charts, thanks to a renewed interest in ‘60s pop culture and music, and a journalist decides to go on a mission to find out what really happened to Eddie and the unreleased album. Enjoy Sherry's and my conversation about our experience with the film—first as teenagers when the movie debuted, then again recently, as adults—and our lasting love affair with not only the movie but also the soundtrack by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band. They just don't make 'em like John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band anymore, but luckily they're still out there doing what they do best. John returns this week to discuss their 1985 album Tough All Over, which featured the hits "C-I-T-Y" and the title track. It was their first album not tied to Eddie and the Cruisers. Plus, they said it would never happen, but the band has released three new singles this year in preparation for their first album in about 35 years. One very early Sunday morning coming down, the Boyz decided to make an unscheduled visit back to the Homan Studio after an already long late night of recording on Saturday. What made this unusual was they had left the previous night's recording session just a few hours earlier. So, in the early morning hours with their friend Jack Herrer in tow, they decided to go into the night on a two-wheeled ride while the city slept. They took random turns into alleys and onto streets that just seemed interesting at the moment, and every now and then they would stop, shut down the engines and engage in conversation with their friend Jack. They were trying to truly get ‘lost' in the city that raised them. As the ride and the night unfolded they came upon a most interesting consideration for a food stop they had never seen before, even though they had passed by this same corner on the city's south side what seemed like hundreds of times before. The ‘Cannibal Cafe' appeared out of nowhere. They pulled in, sat down, looked at the menu, and ordered the “special” from the silent waiter that was also the cook and the only other person in the cafe. The meal was meat, potatoes, toast, and jam, and was simply referred to on the menu as YOU? After only a few bites, Vince looked up from across the booth and with a smile on his face told Edward “I have to say there is no telling what the hell this meat is, but overall - YOU taste good”! Edward looked up and made no reply, but just smiled. When they were finished, they paid the check and stepped outside to again converse with Jack about their ride, the evening, and the meal and it was then they decided to immediately return to the studio for some follow-up recording inspired by their trip into the night and their foodie experience at the Cannibal Cafe. The follow-up conversations recorded that early Sunday morning were interesting, to say the least. And as for the Cannibal Cafe? The Boyz have been unable to locate that cafe again, but every now and then they will look at each other and remember that - YOU taste good at the Cannibal Cafe. Getting near the end of 2022 and definitely the end of the 29 LPs that were certified platinum 15 millions times or more. Some great music that we started counting down months ago. Can you guess what album would have stayed on the charts for the equivalent of 33 years? We've also got Cat Stevens on the turntable and you'll hear John Caffery and the Beaver Brown Band, Buffy Sainte Marie and a few more. Hope you enjoy. Feel free to share this! And have some great holidays.
Iconoclassic Records is headed to the "Dark Side" with the first-ever anthology from the real-life band behind Hollywood's Eddie and The Cruisers: John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band. On September 30, the label released Greatest Hits, a freshly remastered 16-track collection from the rock-and-roll revivalists whose "On the Dark Side" reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984 and spent five weeks atop the Mainstream Rock chart and the MTV video charts. Singer-guitarist Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band (including Gary Gramolini on lead guitar, Pat Lupo on bass, Kenny Jo Silva on drums, Bobby Cotoia on keyboards, and Michael Antunes on saxophone) had been playing up a storm in their native Rhode Island as well as up and down the Northeast Corridor - Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey - throughout the 1970s and early 1980s when producer Kenny Vance offered them an enticing proposition. Music biz veteran Vance was a founding member of Jay and the Americans and an instrumental figure in the discovery of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, a.k.a. Steely Dan. He was looking for a band to craft the music for the eponymous fictional band in the movie Eddie and The Cruisers, and Cafferty's high-energy bar band fit the bill perfectly.

What a strange trip it's been for John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. After a decade of playing every pier and boardwalk in the Northeast, they achieved "overnight success" when they were plucked to do the music for the 1983 film Eddie and the Cruisers. This brought them big hits like "On The Darkside" and "Tender Years" but because the popular video was taken from the movie, many listeners were confused where the movie ended and the band began. JCBBB continued to have hits on their next album like "C-I-T-Y" and "Tough All Over".but they could never quite convince everyone they weren't the guys in the movie. In '89 they did the soundtrack to the sequel that no one was asking for and that was it. However, the band never went away. They continue to play in some club or bar or theater almost every weekend and have done for 50 years. John Cafferty joins us to discuss this whole wild ride, as well as the Rocky 4 soundtrack, the band finally releasing a brand new Greatest Hits cd and much more. Enjoy! www.johncafferty.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

As a follow-up to our recent look at the Boston music scene of the 80s, let's move on to the 90s! And let's also move slightly south, to Rhode Island! (State motto: We're tiny, but we're also quite odd.) Another special guest is here too: filmmaker (It's a Bash!), podcaster (Gleaming the Tube), and longtime friend of the Flopcast Kevin Cafferty! Kevin and Kevin (this is gonna get confusing) both spent the 90s lurking around the filthy rock clubs of Providence, and recall long crazy nights at places like The Living Room, The Strand, Club Babyhead, and Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel. We saw a million local punk bands, spent time with several soon-to-be-famous performers (Green Day, Joan Osborne, Elliott Smith), and attended some ridiculously 1990s concerts (Spice Girls, No Doubt, Better Than Ezra). Meanwhile Kornflake was a couple of states away, figuring out how to sneak into Barenaked Ladies shows. Also: Late nights at Haven Brothers Diner (serving non-sober Rhode Islanders since 1893); Kevin Cafferty in a John Cafferty music video; Weird Al all alone on a Rhode Island roller coaster; and the mysterious connection between Rob Liefeld, The Aquabats, and Kenny G. It's a Bash! is the documentary about Providence punk band Neutral Nation - produced by Kevin Cafferty and directed by David Bettencourt! Gleaming the Tube is Kevin and Mike's podcast about skateboarding in movies! There is indeed a movie about Providence's legendary Haven Brothers Diner!
