Dr. Laura is joined by the brilliant Dr. Shawna Pandya - a Canadian physician, aquanaut, scientist-astronaut candidate with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences, VP of Immersive Medicine with Luxsonic Technologies, and Director of IIAS' Space Medicine Group. Dr. Pandya talks about the many facets of her career and what drives her to success and continued exploration. It is tempting to simply call Dr. Shawna Pandya superhuman and assume she is on a level of her own, but Dr. Laura delves into the very human side of what inspired Dr. Pandya to pursue space medicine, and what continues to keep her growing. Dr. Pandya talks about resilience and the ability to see failure as growth. She has wrestled with her own perceived failures and learned how perspective shifts things for the better. Dr. Pandya explains what being an aquanaut is, her record for days living under the sea, the importance of mentorship and role models in life, and who her own mentors are. From studying to be a neurosurgeon to testing the first commercial spacesuit in zero gravity, Dr. Pandya shares with Dr. Laura how she navigates her extraordinary life.“...so realizing the end is not guaranteed, but the journey is so incredible. Like if you told me as a kid I would get to be part of Mars simulations and get to command these missions and get to live under the sea and do really cool science as part of this and do really cool technology development, and even work with some of these companies like I do with Sonic or advise some of these companies, you know, that's a pretty cool dream to realize as an adult! And so the journey is just as important as that end goal.”  Dr. Shawna PandyaAbout Dr. Shawna Pandya, BSc (Hons), MSc, MD, CFPC, DMT, FAWM (candidate), FEWM (honorary):Dr. Shawna Pandya is a physician, aquanaut, scientist-astronaut candidate with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), skydiver, pilot-in-training, VP Immersive Medicine with Luxsonic Technologies, Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medicine Association, and Fellow of the Explorers Club. She is Director of IIAS' Space Medicine Group, Chief Instructor for IIAS' Operational Space Medicine course, a host with the World Extreme Medicine's podcast series, Primary Investigator for the Shad Canada-Blue Origin student microgravity competition, member of the AIAA ASCEND Guiding Coalition, medical advisor at Astreas and Above: Space Development Corporation, and sessional lecturer for “Technology and the Future of Medicine,” at the University of Alberta. Dr. Pandya was on the first crew to test a commercial spacesuit in zero-gravity in 2015. She earned her aquanaut designation on the 2019 NEPTUNE (Nautical Experiments in Physiology, Technology and Underwater Exploration) mission. Her expeditions have been previously captured in the 2019 Land Rover short, 'Another World,' released with the Apollo 11: First Steps film, and in the 2022 FIGS Space Navy and Mauve space medicine themed campaign. “Work culture is really how people work together. But in my opinion, there are three major components: it's the employer, it's the leadership, and it's the staff—all staff, we're not only talking nurses. We know that it takes a village to really make clinical care happen. All three of those components are critical in creating a healthy work environment. The staff component, including the clinical nurses, is key to that,” Linda Laskowski-Jones, MS, APRN, ACNS-BC, CEN, NEA-BC, FAWM, FAAN, editor-in-chief of Nursing 2022: The Peer-Reviewed Journal of Clinical Excellence, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, AOCNS®, oncology clinical specialist at ONS. But in my opinion, there are three major components: it's the employer, it's the leadership, and it's the staff—all staff, we're not only talking nurses. We know that it takes a village to really make clinical care happen. All three of those components are critical in creating a healthy work environment. The staff component, including the clinical nurses, is key to that. When you look at how the nurses work together and the environment that they are working in, their teamwork, camaraderie, and connections to each other can actually help those staff make it through when perhaps there may be some challenges with employers or leaders as they work through whatever changes they need to make.” Timestamp (TS) 04:12 “It's important to recognize that when you motivate and influence people, whether it's positively or negatively, you're behaving as a leader. There may be people who have some personal need to feel like they can be the judge of others and that they have a very tight group, and unless you're looked at favorably by that group, then you don't have value. So, in this particular type of case, you can have a nursing leader show all the value in the world to that staff, but if you have these cliques where people come in and they feel like, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm working with so-and-so on this particular shift.' Or ‘I've been assigned to this shift permanently. How will I survive?,' that is a big driver of turnover.” TS 10:40 “Watching someone working with a family or a patient, and when the person comes out when they least expect it, saying something like, ‘That was really an amazing interaction, and a very tough situation, and you handled that beautifully.' That can go a long way, and it's all part of value and recognition. . . . Let's show value where value needs to be shown.” TS 21:24 “That value is a 360-degree type of value where really everyone that you're working with in the physician-nurse relationship is critical. Recognizing the role that nurses play and looking at the nurses as colleagues is absolutely critical.” TS 22:56 “Right now, in many places still across the country, nurses feel that they don't have the tools they need to do their job. That of course leads to this negative culture where nurses are very upset, they're coming in extremely unhappy, and they're communicating that unhappiness to everybody, and they have very real concerns. And management has taken different approaches to that, in health or not health as the case may be, and now we have to focus on: How do we fix it? And I think those are the factors that led to where we are. We have a lot of work to do, but at the same time, organizations have to also make fundamental changes.” TS 26:45 “Ultimately, I don't think people on the front line realize how much power they actually have. And the power is in creating effective working relationships, and that includes the nurse-patient interaction, but it also includes working with people.” TS 39:15

We're back after a long break for our semester programs.  Sorry for the wait, but we're glad to be back. In this episode, I'm joined by Nick Daniel of Dartmouth-Hitchcock in New Hampshire. Nick has taught AWLS courses regionally and internationally and has taught wilderness medicine in such locations as the Adirondacks, White Mountains, Mexico, Africa, Guatemala, Russia, and Panama. He spent a month in the Indian Himalayas teaching medical students while providing medical care, as well as time in Haiti. He has completed his FAWM and earned a diploma in mountain medicine. Nick's research interests in wilderness medicine include hypothermia, frostbite, altitude medicine, mountaineering psychology, and hiker preparedness. Recently, he and his coworkers from Dartmouth's wilderness and emergency medicine program came out to our campus for an introduction to wilderness living/survival skills.  Our conversation ranges from talking about Nicks's background and experience in the outdoors, the program for wilderness medicine fellowships at Dartmouth, as well as some insight into the psychology behind who finishes trips and who doesn't, and why that is.  I had a great time talking with Nick, and working with him on the course here at our campus in southern VT. I'm pretty sure you'll get a kick out of our conversation as well. The preservation of these cultures have traditionally been done through the study and documentation of languages, traditions and rituals. Our guests dive into the role AI can play in helping ensure that our collective knowledge, histories and cultures will be around for generations to come.Burr Settles leads the research group at Duolingo, an award-winning website and mobile app offering free language education for the world. He also runs FAWM.ORG, a global annual songwriting experiment. He is the author of Active Learning — an intermediate text on machine learning algorithms that are adaptive, curious, and exploratory (if you will). His research has been published in NeurIPS, ICML, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL-HLT, and CHI, and has been covered by The New York Times, Slate, Forbes, WIRED, and the BBC among others. In past lives, he was a postdoc at Carnegie Mellon and earned a PhD from UW-Madison. Burr currently lives in Pittsburgh, where he gets around by bike and plays guitar in the pop band delicious pastries.Davar is a tech entrepreneur and founder of IVOW AI. Prior to this, she was Deputy Director of the Presidential Innovation Fellowship Program in Washington D.C. and before that a veteran journalist at NPR News. In 2015, her last position at NPR was senior producer of the Identity and Culture Unit.Chamisa Edmo is a citizen of the Navajo Nation, Blackfeet and Shoshone-Bannock and resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous and American Indian Studies, with an emphasis in Tribal Sovereignty, from Haskell Indian Nations University. She is currently working toward a Masters in Computer Science. She is a certified full stack developer and has worked on various web development and robotics projects in her post-baccalaureate career. Chamisa worked for Hanson Robotics as a conversational AI character writer for Sophia the Robot and at CNM Ingenuity as an Assistant Instructor for the Deep Dive Coding Fullstack Bootcamp. In addition to high tech projects, Chamisa is also interested in exploring how North American tribes and Indigenous populations around the world can leverage technology while exercising tribal sovereignty and self-determination.Agora Food Studio is a plant-foward restaurant created by the Timor-Leste Food Lab - a social enterprise dedicated to mentoring future food and coffee innovators. The Timor-Leste Food Lab represents a community of people that believe in a simple, but powerful idea: "Food should be good, clean and fair for producers, eaters and the environment. We believe in a food system that celebrates biodiversity and nourishes the planet; a food system that creates healthy communities where everyone can eat, and eat well." We are based in Timor-Leste, located 8.8 degrees south of the equator. This half-island nation is part of a greater archipelagic region with profound food diversity and bio-cultural history that we hope to research, experiment, taste and document, and then share to a wider audience. Every day is an exploration.Tracy Monteith is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee and Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft. His decades-long work as an innovative technologist and leader have produced unique results on a global scale. Tracy has received a first place finish in world’s largest private hackathon (23K participants, 400 cities world-wide) for AI approach to translating tribal-polymorphic languages and a second place finish for an IoT, cloud-connected beehive-sensor array. His passion for hackathons is shared with thousands of STEM-focussed tribal students across North America as he conducts hackathons for tribal schools. Tracy was the driving force and technical-innovator behind the inclusion of the Cherokee Syllabary in Windows and Office, the first tribal language with that distinction. His work continues with enhancing polymorphic-languages preservation and dissemination through the infusion of appropriate technology into indigenous circles.Wolfgang Victor Yarlott is a member of the Native American Crow tribe. Yarlott’s pioneering research took place with the Genesis Story Understanding System at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In collaboration with his Professor Patrick Winston, Yarlott wanted to determine whether the system could understand stories from Crow folklore as well as it understood the works of Shakespeare. Welcome to the Home Studio Hustle Podcast. This is episode 2. In this episode, I give you some background on myself, as well as clarify who Home Studio Hustle is for. I want to respect your time, so it’s only right to be up front and clear about who I want to help with Home Studio Hustle.   But first, let’s start with me:   (Always a good sign, right?)   No, I believe that if I expect you to give your time to me, you should at least know some things about who I am and where I come from.   My name is Michael Brown and I’m from Connecticut. I work with Special Education Kindergarteners as my day job and I LOVE IT.  I leave work every single day feeling full and fulfilled.I hope your day job makes you feel the same way. Maybe it doesn’t, but that isn’t terribly relevant to what we’re talking about here.   Growing up I was constantly around music.  I sang in chorus and joined band as soon as I could. I knew immediately that music was something I wanted to do forever.   Now, I could go on and on about school and my experiences in each grade, but I’m just going to do some fast-forwarding here to High School.   Does anyone here remember LimeWire?  It was kind of like Nappster. It was an illegal file sharing program and community that hosted a crazy amount of music for free.   Hey, I told you I was going to be honest. That’s a part of my story. I was young and irreverent at the time and that’s not something I would participate in today. In fact, I have a whole future episode of the podcast coming out about how piracy kills creativity!   Anyway, my friend Colin and I were looking around in the files, there, and we discovered a new, budding, genre of music: A Cappella.Yes you heard me correctly. This is WAY before The Sing-Off or Pitch Perfect or even a general knowledge of the style was around.   It blew my mind. I needed in.  I researched colleges based on A Cappella groups rather than graduation rates and student life.   Fast forward some more and I’m in the group I eventually joined- Divisi from Central Connecticut State University.  My freshman year, we got the budget to record our first album.   When we walked into the recording studio for the first time, I was awestruck.   “This is it,” I thought. “This is what I need to do forever.”   Leaving the space, though, I felt heartbroken by the amount of equipment I THOUGHT I needed in order to make enough money to be comfortable as a recording engineer.   I wish someone pulled me aside and told me what I actually needed in order to make an income doing what I so clearly loved.   Fast forward again and the album wasn’t even really that good. Here’s another pain point. If this guy had all of this equipment, he must be doing something wrong with it.  I KNEW that if I was working with his gear, I could record a KILLER collection of music.   But still, nobody told me just how small an investment I’d have to make in order to create a quality product- so I moved on. In 2014, out of a desire to create more, I joined an online challenge called FAWM. That’s F A W M, which is an acronym for February Album Writing Month. The point is it’s a creativity and productivity hack designed to get your juices flowing and force you to churn out projects.  The challenge is to write and record 14 songs in the month of February- a full album.   Since I had no way to record the music I was writing, I went online and searched for a solution.   What I found was a product called an AudioBox from Presonus. It even came with a free copy of their DAW, Studio One 2. (We don’t need to go into how confusing that name is right now)I want to pause here for a moment, because this is one of the most pivotal moments in my life. This small purchase of around $100 changed my path forever.   I devoured tutorials. I recorded relentlessly. I read books and talked to experts.   I heavily invested in myself so that I could give value to others.   During that month, I wrote good songs, and I wrote bad songs, but most importantly I began the journey of improving my skills through practice.   If this part of my life was in a montage, it would cut quickly between my practicing, failing, practicing more, succeeding a little, and practicing even more.   Now, I understand that this is getting a little tedious, so let me speed it up for you.   Over the next 5 years I began producing A Cappella albums and made some strong connections with members of the community.   I partied with the top names in the niche, and curated important relationships with the professionals.   The professional group I was in after college, Connect, won 3rd place in a national competition called the Harmony Sweepstakes.  I recorded them and we made killer music and people are still streaming our music today!   Perhaps one of the next most important points in my audio journey was joining a Mastermind.  I was surrounded by like-minded up-and-coming producers and engineers who wanted to up their A Cappella game.   More than any individual tip or skill I learned in that group (It was a paid mastermind) I found myself in some solid relationships with those people. Fast forward again to the present day. I’m making impactful, supplemental income out of my home studio. Now, did I tell you all of that because I’m in love with myself and just want to sit people down and shove my story down their throat? No.   I have shared my story because I want to highlight the most important parts of it:   That I felt like I couldn’t do it That I took advantage of a moment of strength and jumped into recording That I invested in MYSELF instead of gear in order to get the job done That I curated and leveraged RELATIONSHIPS And that when I had nobody else to work with, I created my OWN projects and EXECUTED on them   So, did you hear me say ANYWHERE that I was the best at something?   No   In fact, I have a personal rule never to be the best in the room. With that said- I want to help as many people as I can with Home Studio Hustle, but I’m sure it won’t be for everyone.   (Ad lib a little on these points) I’m not going to make you rich overnight I can’t fix lazy I can’t help you if you’re headstrong in the WAYS you want to go about this. Who is Home Studio Hustle for? Let’s get specific.   If you’re sitting down at your workstation several times a week and playing around with the same project file but not making any real progress, HSH IFY If you’ve tweaked the EQ and compression settings on your acoustic guitar every night this week, but it’s still not perfect. HSH IFY If you’ve ever rejected a paid opportunity because you’re nervous that you don’t have what it takes to deliver. HSH IFY If you’re pumping out good beats and putting them on soundcloud where they sit and collect dust. HSH IFY If you have a strong desire to create meaningful and impactful art or education using your skills. HSH IFY If you know that you need to invest in YOURSELF in order to improve your work. HSH IFY And if you want to transition your hobby into a reliable supplemental paycheck. HSH IFY If any of those sound like you, join me at homestudiohustle.com/podcast and Subscribe to this podcast. I’ll be here every week to share tips, tricks, hacks, and actionable techniques to get you closer to your goals.   Thank you, and keep hustlin.
