For centuries, Africa has been plundered by foreign powers, who have seized territory and reaped the benefits of profitable trade routes.Despite Africa's abundant natural resources, it remains the poorest continent.A new report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) supports an African Union initiative to remove trade barriers to increase the flow of goods among African nations. It says the African Continental Free Trade Area could reduce extreme poverty. We caught up with the IMF managing director while she was in Nairobi to endorse the AU initiative. Darrell Castle talks about a special kind of man, that being Davos Man, who holds an annual meeting called The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Transcription / Notes: DAVOS MAN—MAKING THE WORLD A WORSE PLACE Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 20th day of January in the year of our Lord 2023. I will be talking about a special kind of man on this report and that is Davos Man. He is meeting this week in a small village high in the Swiss alps called Davos. His meeting, held annually, and called The World Economic Forum, ends today so he will have hundreds of gleaming limousines take him to an airport where he will board more than 1000 private jets which will fly him to his destination. During his week in Davos he was guarded by more than 5000 Swiss soldiers less he become endangered or made to feel insecure. Hundreds of world leaders, politicians, titans of business gathered during the past week to discuss the fate of the rest of us lesser people. Davos Man is not like us for he is a kingpin, a chief of planet earth. He is great and he is good, a one-world, deep stater, a world improver, and he alone can save planet earth from the ravages of lesser beings like us. For example the top U.S. representative was John Kerry who holds the title of climate czar, savior of the planet, or words to that effect. The attitude of Mr. Kerry reflects the attitude of many as they are made to understand their own awesomeness. Quote from Mr. Kerry: “If you stop and think about it, it's pretty extraordinary that we, a select group of human beings, because of whatever touched us at some point in our lives, are able to sit in a room and come together and actually talk about saving the planet. I mean, it's so, almost extraterrestrial to think about quote “saving the planet.” If you said that to most people, most people think you're just a crazy, tree-hugging, leftie, liberal…you know,  do-gooder ,whatever…and there's no relationship. But really, that's where we are.” Well, no John, actually I see you as more of a hypocritical megalomaniac who flies hundreds of thousands of miles per year in private jets to lecture us little ignorant people about how we are destroying the planet. You come to Davos to sit at the feet of a Teutonic bond villain, descended from Nazis who has the audacity to tell us that we will own nothing, and we will like it. We will not eat meat, but instead we will like our bugs, and we will never desire to stray from the tiny plot on which we are confined.  The number one Davos Man, the leader, the founder, and head of The World Economic Forum, is a German named Klaus Schwab. His Teutonic accent is very heavy so much so that he cannot say the “r” sound. He says that we little people are in for a very difficult year and we will therefore have to “write off” the huge costs of transformation. He means that the huge cost he dreams up for us will have to be borne by our labor, not his. Since each one of us has his own destination, how does Herr Schwab know where each of us should go? He knows because Davos Man always knows best. His theme at this year's conference was expressed by Kristalina Georgieva who heads up the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She gave voice to Herr Schwab's transformation theme: “2023 will be a difficult year for the world. The silver lining is we can use it to transform economies & accelerate change that's good for our climate, good for growth. At the IMF, we recognize our responsibility to be a force for good. We're not going to sit back and see what direction the world takes, she says; we're going to give it a shove!” Ms. Georgieva says that the major challenge facing the planet is fragmentation. By that she means that the global order-which Davos men and women like her created—is fragmenting or cracking up. Ms. Georgieva came to Davos to deliver her report, not to accurately deliver the truth to the assembled Davos men.

'Wake Up!' Global Elites Confront a World Full of Risks at Davos

“My fear is that we are sleepwalking into this world. But hey, here is Davos! Wake up! Do the right thing!” That's the rallying cry of Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, imploring the global elite at this week's World Economic Forum to be vigilant as an almost unrivaled list of perils weighs on the world's leaders. Recession looks set to sweep across the globe, nations are leaning more heavily on coal amid tight energy supplies and the cost of servicing debt is soaring. Getting things wrong, Georgieva says, means dragging the “world into a place where we'll be all poorer and we would be less secure.” In this week's episode of the Stephanomics podcast, host Stephanie Flanders chats with a star-studded list of international economists, finance ministers and corporate chieftains from Davos, Switzerland. Gita Gopinath, first deputy managing director of the IMF, explains why finance ministers and central bankers are caught in an almost impossible dilemma: High inflation requires central bankers to raise interest rates to cool the economy, even as governments spend more to help consumers hurting from soaring energy and food costs. Longer term, real interest rates may stay high unless countries can get more targeted with their relief programs, instead of spreading assistance universally, argues Raghuram Rajan, a finance professor at the University of Chicago and former governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The US overspent during the pandemic, partly because “every constituency got a share of the spending simply because they couldn't make choices,” Rajan says. Next, Flanders has a decidedly more upbeat chat with Nandan Nilekani, chairman of Indian tech giant Infosys Ltd. With news that China's population has declined for the first time in decades, India is set to become the world's most populous country. What's more, Nilekani sees the country benefiting from manufacturers seeking an alternative to China, spooked by the latter nation's repeated factory shutdowns amid its Covid-zero policy. Per capita incomes may grow from $3,000 now to $15,000 in the next 25 years, and “that's much more than a middle-income country,” Nilekani says. Finally, Nela Richardson, chief economist at US-based payroll and business outsourcing firm Automatic Data Processing Inc., says real wages have declined across the world recently, even if nominal wage gains have created a myth that workers are “in the driver's seat.” Businesses would benefit from paying workers a living wage, which despite the apparent expense actually results in better productivity and lowers costs, Richardson tells Flanders. “Will inflation moderate enough and wages stay solid enough that workers actually benefit from lower inflation? We don't know that yet,” Richardson says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Inflation is on the rise, at a rate we haven't seen in through in decades. Is a global recession inevitable? Ian Bremmer speaks to Kristina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and David Malpass, President of the World Bank, on the GZERO World podcast. Both guests are leading global efforts to get inflation under control, lift millions out of extreme poverty and prevent the next global recession. Whether they'll succeed is very much an open question.   Malpass says the chances of a global recession in 2023 are 50/50, though he is more worried that the middle-income and poorest countries are moving backward in education, health, food insecurity, and capital flows. He also clarifies his views on climate change.   Georgieva says the risk of a global recession has gone up due to three major reasons: the big global economies are slowing down, inflation is speeding up, and the world's global order is fragmenting. She also explains how Europe should brace itself for a dark winter, even though the next one will be even harder. The silver lining, however, is that Europe is going to accelerate its green transition.
