Knowing god vs. Knowing God: Identifying Little 'g' gods in Your Life In the Christian walk, there is a profound difference between knowing god (in a vague, cultural, or superficial sense) and truly knowing God—the living, holy, personal capital ‘G' God of Scripture. One leads to religion without transformation, while the other leads to relationship, reverence, and revival. 1. "Knowing god": The Danger of Substitutes When we say someone "knows god" in the lowercase sense, it often means: A generic belief in a higher power without commitment to Jesus Christ. An idea of god shaped by culture, comfort, or convenience. A belief in self-made gods—things or people we elevate in our lives that take the place of God. These little ‘g' gods are idols in disguise. Common "little g" gods: Success or ambition Money or materialism Approval or popularity Control or self-dependence Romance or relationships Religion without relationship "You shall have no other gods before Me." – Exodus 20:3 "Their gods are silver and gold, the work of human hands." – Psalm 115:4 These idols may not be carved statues, but they compete for our worship. They promise what only God can truly give—security, identity, purpose—but they always fail. 2. "Knowing God": The Real, Living Relationship To know God (capital G) means: Relationship over religion – Knowing about God isn't enough. He wants us to walk with Him daily. Revelation through Jesus – Jesus said, "If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father" (John 14:9). Submission and transformation – Knowing God means He shapes our identity, decisions, and desires. "Be still, and know that I am God." – Psalm 46:10 "Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." – John 17:3 3. How to Move from "knowing god" to Truly Knowing God Evaluate what you worship – What consumes your time, thoughts, and trust? Repent of idols – Confess and surrender the little gods you've allowed to lead you. Seek intimacy with God – Through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience. Invite the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden idols or areas of misplaced trust.

Rick Lawrence, author of "Editing Jesus," talks about the uneasiness we often experience as those who make reference to God's word in our civil religion, but not remembering that Scripture is ulitmately about Jesus, and reverse-engineer our understanding of it through Him. She underscores that desperation can lead to profound spiritual growth and intimacy with God. Listen in as Rachel Wojo shares valuable resources to strengthen your prayer life, including her latest book "Desperate Prayers." This conversation is a poignant reminder of the peace and spiritual growth that can be achieved through unwavering faith and reliance on God in the face of life's greatest challenges.
Ps Andy ends the series we have been looking at recently where the character of God has been an enlightening message. Today he speaks about firstly the attributes of God. God is infinite, self-sufficient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient and omnibenevolent. Ps Andy then looks again at the characteristics of God which are the hallmarks of His behaviour. We see these exemplified by Christ's behaviour described by the scriptures. When we understand God's character correctly, it affects our expectations of Him. The character of God is revealed by his word and also His Son. Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV) "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven".Everything we need to know about the character of the Father we can gain by watching Christ! But God places us in his Son, so that our identity now is that we're a people who were once separated from God, but now we are in Christ and Christ now lives in us. The life that we live should be Christ-like. If we live a Christ-like life, the world sees the character of God Through the way we now live. So, the character of God is revealed by His word. The character of God is revealed in His son. But the character of God is also revealed through our lives. When we understand that we are now in Him and He in us,,,,,,the life we live now must be to demonstrate His character!!

Strahan is not only an accomplished writer but also the founder of the popular ministry Commoners Communion, a teacher at Practicing the Way, and an award-winning musician. His poetic exploration of our deep spiritual thirst and how to rediscover communion with God is profoundly moving and relevant in today's world. Episode Highlights: Exclusive Insight into Thirsting: Strahan Coleman shares the heart behind his latest book, Thirsting, set to release on October 1, 2024. He delves into the universal issue of spiritual thirst and how the only true solution is a personal connection with God. As Strahan poignantly writes in his book, "Having it together doesn't qualify us for Christ, only desperation, only need, only thirst. The issue is universal, the solution personal." Rediscovering Communion with God: Through years of chronic illness and personal trials, Strahan discovered a deep friendship with God, filled with vulnerability and unceasing prayer. In Thirsting, he shares his journey and offers readers guidance on identifying their God-given thirst and experiencing the fullness of God's presence. The Soul's Deepest Desire: Strahan reminds us that “This world dehydrates us, it's what sin and disorder do.” From personal struggles like lost dreams, sickness, and grief to broader societal issues like political divisiveness and mental health challenges, our souls are in a constant state of thirst. But Strahan emphasizes that only God can quench this thirst, urging us to turn to Him in our moments of pain and confusion. About Strahan Coleman: Strahan Coleman is a writer, poet, and musician living in Aotearoa, New Zealand, with his wife and three young boys. His life experiences, particularly years of chronic illness, have led him to a deep, vulnerable relationship with God, which he now shares through his books, prayer schools, and spiritual retreats. In Thirsting, Strahan invites readers to transform the aches of life into their truest prayers, leading them to discover their divine purpose and connection with God. This first episode will set the stage for our journey by examining the purpose and significance of this remarkable book. Why Study the Gospel of John? Why should we study the Gospel of John? There are several compelling reasons:It's in the Bible: The Bible, being the divinely inspired Word of God, calls us to understand and embrace its entire message. As ministers, we are tasked with proclaiming the whole counsel of God, and studying the Gospel of John is an integral part of that mission.A Balanced Spiritual Diet: Just as we need a balanced physical diet, our spiritual nourishment must come from all parts of the Bible. While we have explored various books in both the Old and New Testaments, it's now time to delve into the unique and enriching perspective offered by John's Gospel.Understanding Jesus: John's Gospel provides a detailed account of Jesus' life and ministry, focusing on His identity as the Messiah and the Son of God. This book is essential for understanding who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish. The Purpose of John's GospelJohn 20:30-31 gives us the purpose of this Gospel: “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”John's Gospel was written to:Prove Jesus is the Messiah: John selected specific signs to demonstrate that Jesus is the promised Messiah foretold in the Old Testament.Prove Jesus is the Son of God: Through the words and works of Jesus, John highlights His divine nature.Lead to Belief and Life: The ultimate purpose is to bring readers to faith in Jesus, leading to eternal life and a deeper relationship with God.Key Themes and ConceptsSelected Signs: John carefully chose miracles that serve as signs pointing to Jesus' true identity.Words of Christ: Jesus' profound statements, such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” reveal His divine nature.Witnesses to Christ: Testimonies, like that of Thomas declaring, “My Lord and my God!” after seeing the resurrected Jesus, affirm His deity.Practical ApplicationBy studying John's Gospel, we will:All of Life for GodThe All of Life for God podcast is an engaging and thoughtful collection of exclusive...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the Show.Jeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com
Act(s) Now Origin story-The power of prayer Acts 1:12-15 Notes: CHRISTlike Characteristic: Connected to God Through the in Word and Prayer/Loving God LifeGroup Questions: Applying the Teaching to Our Lives Here's a question…do you really need to discuss John's sermon or would your time be better used praying together? I've listed questions below if needed, but I highly suggest just boldly approaching the throne of grace instead. Love, John. What origin story (fictional or real) fascinates you and why? What did the Holy Spirit speak to you from the opening of God's Word? What are your first thoughts? Read Matt. 6:5-8 As a group, list the principles Jesus says are the way to pray correctly. Do these truths encourage you or discourage you? Why? Who is someone in your life whose prayers have impacted you or someone you love in a profound way? Explain your answer. Read Matt. 6:9-13. Jesus begins by saying “THIS is how you should pray…”. How might this help a person struggling with prayer? How should His prayer shape ours? List some key principles. Acts 1:14 says the church in Acts “joined together constantly in prayer”. Could this be said of our church NOW? Why or why not? What needs to change in you (don't focus on others) for our church to become a “house of prayer”? Who is one person you are praying for, believing that God's kingdom and rule will come over their life?
This week I had the privilege of being joined by Susan M. Shaw & Grace Ji-Sun Kim to discuss their new book "Surviving God: A New Vision of God Through the Eyes of Sexual Abuse Survivors". It is no secret that Sexual Abuse is a HUGE problem; not just in society as a whole, but within the doors of the Church as well. Grace and Susan both share their own experiences and the experiences of other survivors to help call out the systems and ideologies that are at play that lend themselves to sexual violence and abuse. Our theology is called into question as well as Grace and Susan invite us to look at our understanding of God through the eyes of sexual abuse survivors. I hope this conversation is both challenging and rewarding. Enjoy. Have you ever noticed that when it comes to our relationship with God, it often feels like we're playing a game of spiritual hide-and-seek? God seems to have a knack for being elusive when we're seeking Him, yet He pursues us relentlessly when we're not. Today, let's explore this fascinating dynamic with three points to consider, a call to action, and a conclusion. So buckle up, and let's dive in!* Playing Hard to Get: God's Mysterious WaysProverbs 25:2 says, "It is God's privilege to conceal things and the king's privilege to discover them." It's as if God enjoys keeping us on our toes, hiding His voice, His specific will, and His reasons in places that require us to put in the effort to find them. It's like a cosmic game of "Where's Waldo?" with the ultimate prize being a deeper understanding of God's heart.* Hungry for More: Pursuing God's Hidden TreasuresGod doesn't just hand everything to us on a silver platter – He wants to see who's truly hungry for His presence. Who will persist in the search to hear Him? Who desires an authentic relationship with Him, rather than just a set of rules to follow? The answers to these questions lie in our willingness to seek God wholeheartedly, even when He seems to be playing hard to get.* The Journey Matters: Growing Closer to God Through the SearchIn our pursuit of God, the journey itself is significant. Those who are content with a surface-level, the religious practice may give up early in the quest. But those who can only be satisfied by a genuine encounter with God will persevere, deepening their relationship with Him as they uncover His hidden treasures.Call to Action:Commit to seeking God and discovering His concealed treasures, even when it feels like you're playing spiritual hide-and-seek. Embrace the journey, knowing that the process of searching will draw you closer to God's heart. Be persistent in your pursuit, and don't be discouraged when the answers don't come easily. Conclusion:The game of spiritual hide-and-seek that God seems to play with us can be frustrating at times, but it's also an incredible opportunity to grow in our relationship with Him. As we embrace the challenge of discovering God's hidden treasures, we'll find ourselves drawn closer to His heart and experiencing a deeper connection with our Creator. So, my friends, let's lace up our spiritual sneakers and get ready to play the most rewarding game of hide-and-seek we'll ever experience!Let's Pray…Lord, I'll never give up my desire for more of You —more closeness, better hearing, a deeper connection. Title: The Promises of God Through the Ups and Downs Passage: Hebrews 11:17-22 The Promises of God are True in the Difficult Times (vv. 17-19) The Promises of God are True in Spite of Wickedness (v. 20) The Promises of God are True in Spite of Confusion (v. 21) The Promises of God are True when everything is Awesome (v. 22)
So many people ask the questions, what must I do to become acceptable to God? How can a person gain access to God, in order to fellowship and commune with Him? How can a person come to know God in a real and personal way, so personal that the person can know that God is looking after and caring for him? How can a person gain and maintain a relationship with God? Men have tried to approach God in the past under the Old Covenant and the old dispensations: • Through prophets • Through angels • Through Great Leaders who are great men of God • Through priests • Through covenants and law or by trying to be as good as they can But, every one of these approaches to God are inadequate. They are imperfect and incomplete. They may tell us some things about God. They may help us to understand God to some degree, but they don't give us the full story, nor do they reveal the whole nature of God. They are only shadows and faint copies of the truth. They show us only a part of the truth about God. They don't reveal God to us, nor do they make us acceptable to God or give us fellowship with God. In the Old Testament, the children of Israel built a Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was a place where they sought to worship and become acceptable to God. But, this approach to God was just as inadequate as all the other approaches. Earthly sanctuaries and earthly worship cannot bring us near to God. Earthly sanctuaries and earthly worship cannot make us acceptable to God. Only Jesus Christ can bring us near and make us acceptable to God. This is the point of this passage of Scripture, to show that Jesus Christ is the Greater and more perfect Minister of the Tabernacle. He is the only Minister who brings us to God. Click on the link below to hear a message on why the new heavenly tabernacle is better than the old. This is a live recording of The Master's Class Bible Study at LifeChange Church Wichita, KS. Amen.
The things God has made tell us about Him. Not enough to get us to heaven, but enough to prove to us He exists. The written Word He has given the world is enough for the heaven part. All one need do is read about Christ and obey the Gospel to be saved. But once saved, that person enters into the joy of delighting in God THROUGH all He has made. We move from worshipping the created, to delighting in our Creator.
