Needles down - today isn't filled with Fillers or plumped with Profhilo. We have Jane Green, an acclaimed author and columnist, in the hot seat, and we're celebrating the gift age gives us. For those of you who feel you're flapping around an empty nest or sleepwalking through life trying to fit into neat little boxes, today is for you. Dear Jane may have the true anti-ageing key: radical self-acceptance, unbridled honesty, and taking up your rightful space in the world.Magic mushrooms, wanting what you've got, and going grey - 're-wilding' is not always an aesthetically pleasing journey, but it may get you onto a very joyous new path in life.About our guest: With 18 New York Times Bestsellers and over 10 million books in print, Jane Green is constantly reinventing her career, most recently as the hugely popular columnist "Dear Jane" in the UK national newspaper the Daily Mail and its popular Mail Online website. Now based in Marrakech, she is busy looking for a riad to renovate as her new home, procrastinating on writing a new novel, while trying hard not to rescue every street kitten in the medina. Now she combines Beauty and Science within her atelier. She finds awareness a struggle, as not enough people know what a trichologist is, and she wants it to become more well known, as long as campaigning for regulation within the industry.Penny has seen some very unusual cases, which she shares with us today. She presented these at the World Trichology Conference in London, which she says was the highlight of her career! We look at the possibility of temporary greying, and how it may be triggered by a stressful event. Hair pigmentation could be used to  show past life events by being monitored and measured.Penny describes how the pineal gland can be a variable in hair growth and colour, and that mitochondria can lay dormant and then restart.Connect with Penny:InstagramAbout Penny Hair & Scalp Salon Specialist course Support the showConnect with Hair therapy: Facebook Instagram Twitter Clubhouse- @Hair.Therapy Donate towards the podcast Start your own podcastHair & Scalp Salon Specialist Course ~ Book now to become an expert!

Mitch is fresh of winning the Wirrina Tuna Slam catching a 14.6kg fish on the Saturday, followed by another 14 kilo fish on the Sunday. Mitch gives us a run down on another excellent weekend put on by the Game Fishing Club of SA and even tells us where he managed to catch the winning fish. Mitch comes from an excellent fishing family, his wife Mel was one of the winners of the Coast 2 Coast competition in 2023 so we also try to find out who is the family's champion fisho! We are also joined by James Manna, skipper of ‘Going Grey' a beautiful Stabicraft 2400, who is kindly taking us out as a part of his crew in the Port Lincoln Tuna Comp over the March long weekend. We fished with James last weekend, catching 4 tuna so it's great to be going into the comp with some form under the belt. We talk with James about his past experience in the Port Lincoln comp, our prep for this years competition and what we can expect as a couple of first timers in the competition. Plus, we have all our regular segments, including an update on where the fish (Tuna in particular) are biting, talk about the Shimano 100lb wind on leader as our tackle item of the week and discuss the news in SA fishing!

This week we're revisiting one of my favourite episodes from one of the first series. It was back in the day when it was still taboo to talk about menopause, so getting a so-called hardened war reporter to do just that was, well a bit of a coup. Here's Lindsey Hilsum admitting to hiding behind a tank!---You know when people say you're “brave” because you've got a few grey hairs?! Well, my guest this week is the living proof - as if it were needed - that that is a right old load of BS. Channel 4 International Editor Lindsey Hilsum is an acclaimed foreign correspondent who has reported from all over the world including Iraq, Syria, Gaza, Kosovo and Rwanda. She also won the James Tait Black Award for In Extremis, her devastating biography of her friend, the foreign reporter, Marie Colvin who was killed reporting from Syria in 2012.Lindsey is just as bold as her job might lead you to expect. She takes no prisoners as she talks about managing menopause symptoms in a war zone, being in a minority on the box and why there needs to be more “old trouts on TV” (and, no, she's not bloody brave for going grey on screen), and how she finally found the perfect answer to “Give us a smile love”. Only took forty years…• You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and In Extremis: the life of war correspondent Marie Colvin by Lindsey Hilsum.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.comThe Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine

Why do people start losing the pigment in their hair as they grow older? Well, it might be one of those things that we don't entirely understand, though there are some new studies that offer some ideas. But that didn't stop people throughout history from trying to find ways to keep their hair from turning grey. Of course, Justin doesn't need any of these methods because he has surprisingly little grey hair for someone his age. As he points out. Grey hair can be the beginning of the end. A silver signal that youth and beauty are fading and only old age remains. And while grey at 60 may not be surprising, many start to turn prematurely as young as 20. If we want to hide it, modern haircare products allow us to easily cover up our natural grey and preserve our youth a little longer. But these days, many people – and women in particular, are ditching the dye to show their natural colours. Why? 为什么?"Research has shown that our hair follicle production can be influenced by factors such as hormones and stress, but some people have a genetic predisposition to lose pigment or go bald more than others," says a report on the BBC website. In addition, Prof Desmond Tobin, a hair and skin pigmentation specialist at the University of Bradford in the UK, says that it is normal for people with a European background to start greying in their early 20s. Research which he participated in found that different races have different average ageing rates - with African and East-Asian backgrounds tending to whiten later.“研究表明,我们的毛囊生成会受到激素和压力等因素的影响,但有些人有遗传倾向,比其他人更容易失去色素或秃顶,”英国广播公司网站上的一份报告说。 For many men, going grey may not be a big deal. It's now seen as a sign of sophistication, says UK newspaper Metro. It uses adjectives such as rugged, unique and fashionable. But for many women, these qualities don't seem to apply. Kate Dinota, a New Yorker who started turning grey when she was seven, states that the everyday woman feels a pressure not to age. At 28 and after 14 years, she decided to stop dying her hair and let her grey hair show. And she's not alone. Since 2008, worldwide search interest in 'grey hair' has increased dramatically, Google Trends shows. This may have been driven by celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, who have both had silver locks. "People are torturing their hair to get the look," says renowned hair colourist Rita Hazan, who has worked with celebrities such as Beyoncé and Mariah Carey. Indeed, this trend was what persuaded 30-year-old Stephanie Tunchez from Texas to stop dying her natural hair two-and-a-half years ago. People were paying money to achieve a look she had already. But to many women, the transition is not an easy one. Indeed, Kate experienced doubt from others with her initial decision. "People were like, 'Are you sure? What about your career? You're so young?' Like that seems silly," she reports. She believes there needs to be better representation of grey-haired women of all ages. In this way it is hoped that, like many men, women will feel more confident about letting it show and will feel more comfortable going grey gracefully. 词汇表youth 青春fade 逐渐消失old age 老年prematurely 过早地cover up 遮盖、掩盖preserve 留住pigment (头发的)色素ageing 变老的,衰老的whiten 使变白sophistication (处事)成熟老练rugged 坚毅粗犷的unique 独特的fashionable 时尚的dye 染色locks (头发)缕get the look 以获得想要的造型hair colourist 染发师

The Existential Coach

In this episode I talk about “going grey” in conjunction with the recent termination of Canadian CTV New anchor, Lisa LaFlame. I ask, how is it that something we all do; i.e., aging and going grey, can be used to divide us, given it's something we share? This leads to questions of oppression and alienation. Drawing from such writers as Simone de Beauviour, Shoshana Zuboff and Byung-Chulhan Han, I explore how lazy conceptual outs (like saying, “It's a business decision”) reflect the underlying structures of entitlement that lead us to condemn rather than understand.

An eye opening case has hit the headlines in Canada this week - a news anchor, who happened to have let her hair go grey, was fired after 35-years in the business. She told her audience it was not her decision and local media soon heard allegations from a source that a higher up at her company let her go due to her grey hair. The company denies this was the reason but that staff member has now been put on an absence of leave. Help im going Grey... Why are we so afraid of getting Old. LINK IN BIO Aging is inevitable, but to grow old gracefully is a choice. While we know that getting old is unavoidable, how we perceive this natural process depends greatly upon our social and cultural influences. In western culture, we tend to idolize youth, while aging is stigmatized as undesirable, even shameful. We worry about what we will look like, how our bodies will function, how our minds will deteriorate and how or where we will die. In many ways as we get older we FEEL WE become less visible; in popular culture, in employment, in our communities, even in our own families and this can have a greater impact on women than men. We NEED TO EMBRACE GETTING OLDER AND GOING GREY UPSTAIRS & DOWNSTAIRS

The Front Bottoms are a successful emo band, even though the modern music landscape has turned the phrase “successful emo band” into an oxymoron. After years of small tours and various recordings,  TFB vaulted into the national music consciousness with 2013's Talon of the Hawk. The success of that record garnered major label attention, and TFB subsequently signed with Fueled by Ramen. Their first album on Fueled by Ramen, the hilariously titled  Back on Top, proved that signing with a major wouldn't alter their sound too much. Their second Fueled by entry, 2017's divisive Going Grey, felt more major label-ey, with it's soaring synthesizers and big-budget production flourishes bedazzled some fans and pissed off some others. In Sickness and in Flames, released August 21, 2020, could not have been more anticipated by the PGP crew. 022 Reducing the Stress of Caregiving with Brenda Stroth

THE FOR REAL LIFE

This month we are focussing on self care and especially for those who are caregivers to loved ones. Brenda Stroth shows us how she fills her cup while being the full-time caregiver for her husband for the last six years.Brenda Stroth is an inspiring speaker and author who draws her audience into her experiences through vulnerability,  transparency, humor and passion for the Kingdom of God. She has been a sought-after speaker for Women's' Retreats and Conferences for over 20 years. During this time, she has beenpursuing her love for studying and teaching Biblical truths from a Hebraic perspective. She sees the Hebrew text as a key to gleaning often missed insights into biblical texts and finding hidden treasures from historical and cultural occurrences, as well as wisdoms from sages and scribes of eras past. For the past several years, Brenda has been hosting a torah study community via weekly zoom conferences. She is also currently completing a workbook on the Hebrew alphabet and its hieroglyphic wisdoms. Her goal is not to teach “biblical knowledge”, but rather to encourage, empower and stir uppassion to know and love Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) and see Him revealed within all the Hebrew scriptures. In 2013 Brenda's life was dramatically impacted when her husband was diagnosed with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and then again in 2016 when he was also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. As with every challenge she is handed, Brenda has poured her energies and talents into becoming his Advocate and navigating through these daily challenges. She is determined to enrich her husband's life and to continue walking through this journey with gratitude, grace, humor and apassionate fierceness to see God glorified in every circumstance of her life. Little known fact about Brenda: her hobbies are breakfast, lunch, dinner and Caramel lattes with extraWhip. Brenda and Jeff have been married 35 years and reside in beautiful Texarkana, Texas. They have 4 adult children and one grandson. One of the first things that she realized is that she started to fall apart healthwise and couldn't turn her neck. Caregiving will sadly age you and taking care of yourself is so important. Another thing she has incorporated is respite care. Your energy is doubled up taking care of things that the person is no longer able to do and it is exhausting. She started adding positive things into their life to help. She had a friend come one day a week to take her husband to the gym and then go to lunch allowing her to have some alone time.Yoga is another thing that she has done to relax her mind, strengthen her body and relieve stress. This also helps manage emotions and breathing in the midst of situations at home as well.Eating properly has also made a huge difference.  She is choosing to fuel her body to have energy that she would normally not have. Instead of grabbing a bag of potato chips and her body fighting to process that she chooses food that will actually fuel her to be able to do the things she has to do.Guarding her time and energy is also super important to Brenda. She decided she has only so much time and she has to let go of the things that were not valuable to her and replaced them with things that served the purpose of fueling her relationship or body/mind. An example was cutting out some non-essential reading and saying “no” more. Another example was letting her hair go grey and just rock a great haircut. And boy is she rocking that grey!!!We discussed how she initially asked for help. She became aware that she had decision fatigue from being the one who made all the decisions. Compassion fatigue also has made its mark on her. She was always so private with what was happening Support the show

“The Man Who Did Nothing” by Karen Traviss(Originally published in The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror: Seventeenth Annual Collection.)Hursley Rise, May 2There was a boy – five, maybe six – sitting on half a discarded mattress by the kerb as Jeff drove down the road. At first he thought the child was trying to open a bottle of pop, but the closer he got, the better he could see that the boy was making a petrol bomb.Jeff slowed to a crawl and then stopped. He didn't dare switch the engine off, not here. A daffodil nodded in the grass at the side of the road and the whine of a power-drill competed intermittently with music throbbing from an open window. The normality didn't reassure him; he opened the car window about six inches. The child was trying to thread some rags into the neck of a beer bottle, pausing every so often to hold the bottle up to the light, sigh, and resume his task of working the rag into the neck of the bottle with his index finger. For a moment Jeff thought about getting out and taking the thing from him. Then an older boy in the latest Manchester United tracksuit walked up to the kid and crouched over him, like a protective elder brother, and took the bottle gently from him. He examined the wick, pushed it further into the bottle and handed it back to the kid. That was how you did it. Then both boys looked up at Jeff, as if moving as one."Antichrist! Fuckin' antichrist!" they shouted. And the bottle – unlit, mercifully – arced and crashed onto the road just short of the driver's door. Both boys ran back up the road, not looking back.Karen Traviss is the author of a dozen New York Times bestsellers, and her critically-acclaimed Wess’har books have been finalists five times for the Campbell and Philip K.
