Welcome to Diaspora, the show where we share the remarkable stories of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. In this episode of Diasporaa, host Aditya Mehta sits down with Sam Bhatnagar, an entrepreneur from Vancouver, BC, originally from Chandigarh, India, who shares his remarkable immigration journey. Sam recounts his early life spent in Kenya, transitioning to Canada in 2005, and the challenges and triumphs along the way. He discusses the importance of adapting to a new culture while staying rooted in one's heritage, and his family's successful venture into the financial advisory business. The conversation explores the dynamics of the Indian community in East Africa, the process of immigration to Canada, and insightful advice for new immigrants. The episode also touches on Sam's personal life, including his experience with the Canadian health system during his son's birth and the importance of maintaining a work-life balance in a family-run business. 00:00 Introduction to Diasporaa 00:21 Meet Sam Bhatnagar: From Chandigarh to Vancouver 02:20 Life in Kenya: A Journey of 17 Years 03:54 The Indian Community in East Africa 09:02 Moving to Canada: A Family Decision 12:21 Settling in Canada: First Impressions and Challenges 13:58 Starting Over: New Jobs and New Beginnings 17:04 Building a Financial Advisory Business 22:47 Advice for New Immigrants 25:31 Overcoming Negative Experiences 26:21 The Importance of Reaching Out 29:25 Balancing Cultural Exposure 32:04 Managing Family Business Dynamics 36:42 Navigating Parenthood and Healthcare 41:51 Building Connections and Abundance Mindset 47:36 Funny Cultural Mix-Ups 49:31 Nostalgic Sounds and Smells 51:11 Conclusion and Farewell List of Resources: Chandigarh: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandigarh Greater Vancouver Board of Trade: https://boardoftrade.com/ Gujaratis in East Africa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gujarati_people#East_Africa Lake Victoria: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Victoria Best Cities for Quality of Life Rankings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_quality_of_life_indices About the Podcast: Diasporaa was the name of Aditya's startup based in Vancouver, BC. It focused on helping new immigrants in Canada find their feet, get off to a running start and ease their assimilation into Canadian life. A big part of the platform were conversations, community and support. Though the startup stopped growing once Aditya moved to Seattle, WA - it remained alive in the form of several discussion groups and online communities. Now, Diasporaa has been resurrected in the form of a podcast focused on sharing interesting immigrant stories from the South Asian diaspora and uncovering how much we have in common despite our differences. It is available on YouTube, all major podcast platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, etc. and is also broadcast as a radio show on Alternative Talk 1150 AM and 98.9 FM HD Channel 3 on Wednesdays from 2-3pm PST. About Aditya Mehta: Aditya is a Bombay boy who has lived in Austin, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Vancouver before making it to his current home in Seattle. He has degrees in marketing, urban planning, real estate and strategy but has spent his career in financial services, social media and now real estate - mostly as an entrepreneur and partly as an employee at Amazon. He balances Indian, Canadian and American culture, loves helping those who are new to North America and looks forward to the interesting stories that his interview guests bring each week. When not podcasting, he is helping his wife Prachi build her pharmaceutical business or hanging out with his son Arjun. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 13th of February and here are the headlines.Prime Minister Narendra Modi today embarked on a two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, highlighting the robust ties India shares with these nations. In his departure statement, PM Modi said that his visit will deepen India's bilateral ties with both the nations. PM Modi will address world leaders at the World Government Summit in Dubai and also inaugurate the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi.Chaos emerged at Punjab-Haryana border today as protesting farmers began to remove the barricades, following which the Haryana police fired rounds of tear gas to disperse the mob. A number of farmers were detained and their vehicles seized by Haryana police soon after farmers' unions began the ‘Dilli Chalo' march amid heavy security. Farmer leaders decided to continue their march after a second round of crucial meeting between the farmer union leaders and Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Arjun Munda last evening ended in a stalemate, with no common ground in sight.Just a day after exiting the Congress, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan joined the BJP today. Speaking about his decision to join the BJP, he said, quote, "After 38 years of political career in Congress, I took the decision to join BJP. I look forward to new innings with a positive outlook keeping the development agenda in mind." Unquote. The Supreme Court today quashed the criminal defamation complaint against Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav in connection with remarks where he allegedly referred to Gujaratis as "thugs". The court quashed the complaint, taking note that Yadav had tendered an apology and withdrawn his statement. The order came on Yadav's plea seeking a transfer of the criminal defamation complaint pending against him in an Ahmedabad court to a place outside the state, preferably Delhi.Goa police today told a Children's Court that a mental health assessment of Suchana Seth, the Bengaluru-based CEO accused of murdering her four-year-old son at a Goa hotel last month, did not find any case of psychopathology, and that she gave "clear and rational answers" during the medical examination. The police cited a report of the medical examination conducted at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour in Bambolim, stating that "serial mental status examinations did not reveal any case of psychopathology".This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Please listen to the podcast (click the ‘play’ button above). A version of this essay will be published by Chintan of the India Foundation. The terrifying riots there have died down a bit, but not before causing significant damage. Not only the deaths, but the damage to the economy and to investor confidence must be substantial. A major oil refinery was shut down, highways were blocked, telecom towers and warehouses were torched. Thousands of small businesses as well as malls were looted, and in many cases, burnt to the ground. From an Indian point of view, the plight of Indian-origin businesses, as well as of people of Indian origin, is of great concern. There is the naive belief in some circles that because of the Gandhi legacy (after all, he lived in that country for years) and the respect Nelson Mandela had for him, there must be some goodwill among South Africans for Indians. That is far from the case, as a rule. It is just as risible as believing American blacks have some fellow-feeling for Indians just because Martin Luther King spoke glowingly of Gandhi. On the contrary, the average American black views all Asians as competing for the crumbs that non-whites get. I realized this long ago about South Africa while reading apartheid-era novels, wherein the Indian-origin people are members of the African National Congress, but they are distinctly second-class. Quite rightly, black South Africans dominate: it is their country, after all. A few whites, propelled by what we now call ‘social justice’ are also part of the inner circles. But the Indians are outsiders, tolerated at best, excluded at worst. We have seen this in many countries: Tamils in Sri Lanka, Chettiars in Burma, Gujaratis in Uganda and much of East Africa, and Tamil plantation workers in Malaysia. The list goes on. It mirrors the Jewish experience in much of Europe, and the Chinese experience in Southeast Asia: unloved immigrants who nevertheless are important for the economy.Apartheid-era South Africa, if I am not mistaken, had clear divisions: whites, coloreds (mixed-race people), blacks and Indians. There was little mixing across the groups. I knew a white American in Boston who had worked in South Africa. He had interacted with hardly any Indians, and thought they were under the ‘colored’ rubric. In a Laurens van der Post novel, there’s a character named Miss Naidoo, an ANC member, and a cripple. I think the metaphor was not accidental. Indians have a history of being outsiders in the societies they immigrate to; and often the butt of both envy and disdain, as they are non-violent, and often affluent, and thus perfect victims. It is also known that the Indian government does very little even for its expatriate citizens, not to mention long-ago migrants. This could well be the reason that many Indian businesses were attacked. Durban, KwaZulu Natal, is where most Indians live. The prevailing wisdom from the Western media is that the riots were political, instigated, and pre-planned. It is said that the goal was regime change, as the current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, is unwinding widespread corruption by the previous president, Jacob Zuma, whose arrest was the proximate cause for the troubles. Zuma’s children and foundation, as well as his ethnic group, the dominant Zulus, are accused of malfeasance. We in India should note those words: regime-change, instigated, pre-planned riots, ethnic-group, corruption. This is precisely what is going on here too: the ancien regime, corrupt to the core, manufactures reasons for riots, with the help of malign outsiders, and its vote-banks can create disturbances at the drop of a hat. The intent is a ‘color revolution’, a violent overthrow of the current regime. It is an exact match with what apparently went down in South Africa. But there are dissenting voices. A friend who’s a professor at the University of Cape Town (he could well be a Zulu himself, I didn’t ask), said, and I quote his message verbatim, in its entirety: Looting and many forms  of violent public protests are very common in South Africa.  The current one has been very massive.  To a large extent, this has been a result of the covid-19 pandemic. Due to the lock down restrictions, unemployment has risen so much, people are struggling. Initially govt was providing a sort of social grant to cushion the effects, but that was stopped months ago.  So any trigger would get people into the streets. The professor is painting a different picture. South Africa has long been infamous for violence, including against foreigners; car-jackings; murders; and general mayhem. Coincidentally, I was watching a film named ‘Chappie’ about robot cops set in Johannesburg: the crime is getting to be too much for human police to handle. So which is it? A pure political spectacle as we see in India, or is it the aakrosham of a people who were restive anyway, but have been devastated by the pandemic? It is important for us to know. South Africa is a beautiful country; it is the locomotive economy for the entire continent; and if it collapses into a failed state, it puts a big crimp into India’s own Indian-Ocean-Rim based economic prospects for the future. However, in 2019, although Modi is the Prime Minister of the country, Gujaratis are visibly miffed especially in South Gujarat. South Gujarat is not only a fertile strip of land with a bi-annual yield, it's also one of the most heavily industrialised regions in the country. Now, three major infrastructure projects of national significance are currently underway in South Gujarat, which will eat into fertile land and has drawn the ire of several farmers. These projects are: The Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor (Bullet Train Project), The Mumbai Ahmedabad Expressway and the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Except for the Bullet Train project, land acquisition for the other two projects has been completed, albeit, the farmers have dragged the state government to the court. One of the major concerns for the farmers is the paltry compensation offered to them by the government, as it is far lesser than the actual market rate of the land. The Quint met with some farmers and land owners in Bharuch District where the three above mentioned projects will kick out hundreds of farmers from their lands.

This week, The Musafir Stories speaks to Johann Binny Kuruvilla, the face behind the blog Escapinglife.com. So sit back and enjoy as Johann takes us to his hometown!! Today's destination: Kochi, Kerala! Nearest Airport: Cochin International Airport Nearest Railway Station: Ernakulam Town Station or Ernakulam Junction Station Packing - Make sure to carry some rain gear if you are there during the monsoons/rainy season Time of the year - September to February is a good time to go! Length of the itinerary: 3 days Itinerary Highlights: Johann begins by sharing his story about the journey from the corporate world to being a blogger and how one movie - Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna bhoomi inspired him to travel to the North East! Johann begins the conversation by sharing some insights into the rich history of Kochi and how it was formed when the previously prominent port city of Muziris was wiped out by the flooding of Periyar river in 1341. The itinerary begins at Fort Kochi, formerly known as Fort Emmanuel - established by the portugese explorere Vasco da gama in the 15th century. The fort was then ruled by the Dutch and later on by the British with the evolution of power. A walk through the lanes of the fort city gives one a view of the beautiful colonial era houses mingled with traditional Kerala style houses. Streets such as Princess street, Peter celli street, Burger street blend in finely with the colonial vibes of the city! Popular churches like St. Francis cathedral (where Vasco da gama was initially buried) and Santa Cruz basilica are a part of Fort Kochi. Other interesting things to do are attending a Kathakali performance at the Kerala Kathakali center The walk ends at the iconic Chinese fishing nets which have become synonymous with Kochi! From here, one can take a tuktuk or bicycle to Mattancherry, where the locals traditionally lived. This place used to be a hub of local markets and commerce as well as house boats. Make a stop at the Mattancherry palace - where the Kerala royals used to live, this was gifted by the Portuguese to the royals! The Dutch later on renovated the palace and hence it is sometimes referred to as the Dutch Palace! The palace also has a number of murals depicting the Indian epics. Johann also speaks of the diversity of Kochi that includes Marathis, Gujaratis, Konkanis, Kutchi memons, Jews, Arab muslims, Jains and many more sects that live peacefully together. The next pitstop of our journey is Thrippunithura, a historical area where the erstwhile Kerala royals lived. There is the magnificent Thrippunithura palace overlooking more than 50 acres of the fort. Sloped roof, large Dutch windows, British arches and the traditional Thacchushaastram style of architecture gives a unique flavor to the palace, which is now a museum. There is also the Poornathrayesa temple in the vicinity, which is famous for the Vrishchikoltsawam festival. The procession of decorated/Caparisoned elephants carrying the deity is a prominent event of the temple in Nov-Dec. The final pitstop of our tour is Ernakulam - the newer region of Kochi! This is the hub of all the commercial activity among other things. A lot of new projects like the Broadway - a walkway with a lot of shops and markets, the Ernakulam market, the Marine drive etc. There is also the Subhash Park where one can catch the beautiful view of the lakes and sunset. One can also indulge in shopping at the Lulu supermarket, the biggest mall in India, to end the trip!
