This time, we are looking at the life of Sterling Morrison and the seminal band, the Velvet Underground. Though three of the members were from New York and one from the UK, their unusual story involves a bizarre connection to Texas as Sterling left the band and moved to Texas to become a English professor at the University of Texas and then a Tugboat captain in the Houston Ship Channel. Follow his remarkable life and hear samples of the Velvet Underground's ground breaking music as they become one of the most influential bands of all time.

Shelley Moore Capito: So using ethane from Natural Gas as a feedstock means that chemical companies can choose to operate in West Virginia due to the enormous benefits of being right on top of the resource. That's why, again, I included language in the energy bill that will require the Department of Energy and Commerce to conduct a study to look at the feasibility of an ethane storage and distribution hub here in Appalachia, in West Virginia or in the region. 11:34 - 12:00 Sen. And there's those who deny that we're going to be needing fossil for the next two, three or four decades. 12:50 - 13:33 Sen. Joe Manchin: Infrastructure, we must put the necessary infrastructure in place to take advantage of the robust opportunities that come from our abundant natural resources, while ensuring the reliability of our electric grid. And I will mention one thing. I've spoken to a lot of our state legislators. And I said, we've got to start thinking in terms of regional energy have Mid-Atlantic energy, regions such as the southwest, we should be looking at Pennsylvania and Ohio as part of this region, not the borders that separate us but basically the ability that we have to work together, build these pipelines that basically keep some of this product in this market area. To attract it, they say, build it and they will come. I truly believe if you have it, they will come but you have to have access to it. 18:42 - 19:00 Brian Anderson: Over the last 10 years production of ethane and propane at the Marcellus and Utica Shales have driven the cost of these very valuable raw materials to a price point well below global and national prices. Connecting this valuable resource to the national and global markets will take modern, robust infrastructure, the topic of this hearing. 19:01 - 19:13 Brian Anderson: I contend that the types of infrastructure necessary to benefit both the region and the nation is not only a reliable modern network of pipelines but also a robust regional system with natural gas liquid storage and distribution 20:12 - 20:28 Brian Anderson: With current production rates in the in the basin, around 500,000 barrels per day, the resource is certainly sufficient to support a renewed and robust chemical industry. That is, as long as there is modern and robust energy transportation infrastructure to support that. 21:42 - 22:32 Brian Anderson: The goal of this project is to provide essential data to support the development of the chemical manufacturing industry, promoting economic development. As evidenced by the industry's commitment to our project, developing storage and transportation infrastructure is a critical pathway to developing the industry in the region. Subsurface storage and distribution and a network of pipelines will benefit both the raw material producers -- the upstream oil and gas industry -- as well as the chemical industry by fostering a readily available and reliable network and research and source of natural gas liquids, developing a predictable price point of the commodity in the region. Currently, there is only one spot pricing for natural gas liquids in the United States and Gulf Coast. And thirdly, promoting regional investment in a more robust ecosystem for the industry. 38:55 - 39:50 Steven Hedrick: Rather than exporting additional ethane available via pipelines in the United States Gulf Coast to Europe, Asia or even Canada, it could be utilized here in the Appalachian Basin, here in America, to maximize the value potential of our raw materials. According to the publication the Natural Gas Intelligence, ethane accounts for more than 50% of the typical barrel in the Appalachian region, with exports now leading market spoke near Philadelphia. I think production has been increasing in the region. In fact, administering company MPLX's CEO Gary Heminger recently said with incremental ethane takeaway projects and the projected completion of a regional cracker facility, we anticipate reaching full utilization of our existing facilities. In other words, we need more infrastructure and companies like Shell need more elasticity in the supply chain in order to maximize the benefit of ethane. 39:48 - 40:41 Steven Hedrick: We would propose that the corridors naturally created by the Ohio and Kunal rivers be utilized as a platform for a substantial pipe system that will support the distribution of key raw material and intermediate constituents, including but not limited to, methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and chlorine all of which are significant building blocks to the petrochemical industry and hence our society. We therefore must add substantial underground storage to the highest value of broadly used raw materials, specifically ethane, ethylene and propane and butane if we're able to create a built for purpose Appalachian storage hub. This can be safely and efficiently done and naturally occurring underground caverns in depleted natural gas extraction points, or even in depleted salt domes. In fact, the brightest minds in geological formations are currently studying the best locations for the hub. 1:34:03 - 1:35:40 Sen Joe Manchin: So I've come to the conclusion of this, the only way that we're ever going to is follow the dollars, the tax credits, extenders. They've been pouring more and more tax credits and extenders into renewables. And the only thing I'm going to say if that's the policy direction, and we can't collectively stop some of this other thing, when you have an administration desire to do something as they've done, we could at least say this, it makes all the sense in the world, if you're going to use these tax extenders, they call them tax extenders, they're credits, they give them credits if they do certain things in certain fields. So for moving to solar, or hydro, or wind and all this, those credits should only be used in a germane energy, that's where the losses were. So if the losses came from areas such as West Virginia and such as southwest Virginia, and such as Kentucky, those credits have to be used there. It makes all the sense in the world. We're gonna do every -- I'm gonna do everything I can just to shut the system down the next time, because trust me, they love tax credits. The wind people ain't letting tax credits go, solar'snot letting tax credits go. So I'm saying how do you argue against at least using the credits if you're going to get them? We'll build the best windmills, Danny. Our guys can build windmills. We can build solar, we can build anything you want. Just give us a chance. And that's what I am most upset about is no plan. There was no plan for a major policy shift in energy. And that's what we've got to correct I think, as quickly as possible to give us all a chance to survive in this tough area. Dr. Edmond Russo, a 27-year veteran of the US Army Corps of Engineers, has a passion for innovation, especially identifying and pursuing new ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness of water resource management activities. In his work at the Galveston District, he led a team that is developing a 50-year plan to protect and restore the Texas Gulf Coast. In this podcast, Edmond puts the scope and scale of the District into perspective and talks about how he and the Galveston team are incorporating the principles and practices of Engineering With Nature in their daily work and their future planning.   Galveston District’s huge 50,000 square mile area of responsibility spans over 360 miles of the Texas coast, from Louisiana to Mexico, extending inland 150-200 miles, and includes world-scale ports, container terminals, and the Houston Ship Channel. The region’s fragile coastal shorelines, ecosystems and infrastructure are vulnerable to sea level rise and no stranger to extreme storms. The District has correspondingly big challenges and opportunities – in the areas of navigation, flood risk management, coastal storm risk management, and ecosystem restoration. The Galveston team is currently working on navigation channel improvement projects of approximately $3.9 billion.   When Edmond arrived at the Galveston District in 2014, he faced significant organizational and collaboration challenges. Under his leadership and driven by his “Fierce Urgency of Now” (FUN) approach, the District became the first Engineering With Nature Proving Ground, which inspired and enabled the Galveston team to collaborate and innovate to effectively address pressing water resource management challenges. The team’s work led to the integration of natural and nature-based solutions into their traditional water management processes. For example, in one project, material dredged from the Houston Ship Channel, which was required to expand the channel and improve shipping safety, was used to construct wetlands and dikes in Galveston Bay. By using the dredged sediment instead of more expensive rock for the lining of the dikes, the team was able to achieve extended ecological benefits, while meeting its navigation safety and reliability mandates, and reducing costs by about 30% compared to more traditional approaches.   What was learned from initial EWN projects is being incorporated into larger projects in the District, including the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study, which recommends infrastructure construction on the scale of $22B to $32B spanning a 50-year timeframe. Part of the proposed plan is to construct a 40-mile long barrier of beaches and vegetated dunes across Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula. A key objective is to reduce coastal storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico into Galveston Bay. This will reduce the risk of property and infrastructure damage and protect and restore fragile ecosystems. Edmond believes this will be critical to achieving long-term resilience and sustainability of coastal communities and ecosystems, especially along the Houston Ship Channel where billions of dollars of energy sector and other economic assets are located.   Edmond talks about the importance of one of the core EWN principles the team has applied to the development of the Feasibility Study – enhancing communications and collaboration with decision makers, agency partners, academics, and public stakeholders, through a variety of activities, including community work groups. A key finding has been that early and frequent engagement with clear and transparent explanations of the process, progress, and intent of each stage, plus enabling stakeholders to influence the process and outcomes, is helping to achieve shared understanding and unity of purpose. He notes this spirit of collaboration will be critical in the future planning and implementation phases of the long-term Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Plan.   When envisioning the Texas coast over the next 50 years, Edmond believes the application of EWN in the Galveston District will enhance understanding of the complex performance of integrated coastal storm risk management and ecosystem restoration features at a landscape scale. The integration of robust field observation, data collection and analysis, leap-ahead biophysical process modeling and simulation, machine learning and artificial intelligence will significantly improve decision making, project performance, and outcomes -- especially during significant storm events. He notes that as the Galveston District continues to innovate, the lessons learned in applying EWN principles and practices and the innovations developed will be shared with other Corps Districts to extend the value to the nation.     Related Links: EWN Website ERDC Website USACE Galveston District Edmond Russo at Galveston District Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study Houston Ship Channel

Love the show and am beyond grateful for the information and insights you provide as I’m new to the industry. I’ll leave a rave review on the podcast but first wanted to ask if you have any plans to come out to the Bay Area this year for a happy hour. Please let me know if so, and how I could help coordinate.  You mentioned hoping Guyana’s government would manage their recent find responsibly. Can you share some examples for a template of a government doing a good job of managing oil or other resources (especially with regard to the corruption aspect and how any success stories avoided it)? Also, have you read The Prize yet? Hi Guys – We heard yall mention something about water recyle/treatment during your show with Kurt and would like to know whats going on from a treatment side. If you’d like to collaborate and do a show or two that discusses the basics of water treatment and or some Q&A from the listeners we’d love to see what that looks like. I’m a student looking for some advice on the field of petroleum engineering and would appreciate to hear what you think about the future of this field. I have planned for some time and am fascinated by the technical side of petroleum engineering, I’m interested in the geology and exploration aspects of it and would eventually like to work as a reservoir engineer or in a similar capacity. I have been fortunate being accepted to several highly regarded colleges offering petroleum engineering curricula and I have to make my choice soon. My concern is the outlook for and the future of my professional career choice, as well as the industry.  Many of my family, friends and other contacts question my preference saying that the world is turning away from oil and that my career opportunities would be limited by my narrow focus on this field. What would a petroleum engineer be able to effectively do, if industry trends made it necessary to pivot and apply his expertise to another field? Any advice and insight you might have for me and that could shed some light on whether or not its a good idea to enter into the field of petroleum engineering, would be very much appreciated. Hey guys, First time listener, but definitely will continue to follow. Two questions for you guys… 1) We are long past the days of peak oil (supply), but what are your thoughts on peak demand? 2) What’s your opinion on the shipping container(s) vs O&G export vessel(s) debate currently going on in the Houston Ship Channel? Thank you for your time! Love the show gents, and the Startups show as well! Mark what do you think is the most important things facing our industry looking forward? Jake when VC groups are looking to make an investment in O&G tech, what are the couple of things they often overlook? And explain what you and Collin are trying to do with your digital wildcatters vlog? I like it, just curious what you are trying to accomplish? Tell me a little about yourself and how long have you or served behind the front line for? In What capacity?   I was on active duty for over 13 years and served in several capacities. My first 2 ½ years was spent on a 210’ vessel out of Galveston TX. Our major operations were patrols looking to counter drug and migrant smuggling and illegal fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. I was part of the deck force, and we were the deckhands who handled all of the vessel mooring unmooring, helicopters tie down and tie down equipment maintenance, maintenance of the ships exterior, watch duties, helmsman duties, watch for rounds on the vessel while underway. I was leading seamen when I left which is the highest ranking E3 in that department. I was a vessel rescue swimmer, and I was involved in multiple rescues and recoveries of both living and deceased victims of human trafficking. This was one of my biggest operational accomplishments while on the vessel, and I was awarded a Letter of Accommodation (LOC) for this and given a challenge coin by the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander as an E3. I went to my specialty rating training in 2007 and became a Marine Science Technician Petty Officer 3rd class upon graduation. I was awarded the most inspirational and earned the most fitness points while attending this training out of all my graduating class. Our roles as MST’s are generally handling the regulation of the United States commercial storage and transferring of oil and hazardous materials in the ports and waterways which are subject to the laws of the Federal Government of the United States. We perform safety and security inspections on facilities, vessels, local governments and the other entities involved in the handling of commerce. I was stationed in Baton Rouge LA enforcing laws in the Mississippi River and ports around Baton Rouge. I was stationed in Texas City TX enforcing laws in the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Bay, and the ports Galveston and Texas City. I was stationed in Houston TX enforcing the laws in the Houston Ship Channel and the Ports surrounding Houston.   What was the hardest time of your life? What tools did you use to get through it?   Well, this question has layers for me, but I think my life has created a lot of hard times consistently for me. Faith in God and his promise and the drive to wake up and do your best, look for the best in all situations and strive to be better are the things that overcome all for me. Synopsis of challenges. Parents divorced at 5, moved into a trailer park without any money, mom married an alcoholic and addict with three sons who didn’t necessarily like me, lived in a financially poor situation and constant fighting and chaos. Meanwhile, my father remarried and had two stepchildren who were well off financially I didn’t get along with my stepmother either. My father never had to pay child support, while he and his new family were going on vacations buying homes and property. The Other Great Migration: The Movement of Rural African Americans to Houston, 1900-1941By Bernadette Pruitt, PhDFrom the publisher: The twentieth century has seen two great waves of African American migration from rural areas into the city, changing not only the country’s demographics but also black culture. In her thorough study of migration to Houston, Bernadette Pruitt portrays the move from rural to urban homes in Jim Crow Houston as a form of black activism and resistance to racism.Between 1900 and 1950 nearly fifty thousand blacks left their rural communities and small towns in Texas and Louisiana for Houston. Jim Crow proscription, disfranchisement, acts of violence and brutality, and rural poverty pushed them from their homes; the lure of social advancement and prosperity based on urban-industrial development drew them. Houston’s close proximity to basic minerals, innovations in transportation, increased trade, augmented economic revenue, and industrial development prompted white families, commercial businesses, and industries near the Houston Ship Channel to recruit blacks and other immigrants to the city as domestic laborers and wage earners.http://www.tamupress.com/product/Other-Great-Migration,7543.aspx
