Summary: Welcome to a very special Love Fest to celebrate our 80th episode! Today, Devin and Holly share their top 10 Hearts and Daggers books from 2024. Holly spent the year falling in love with more literary stories from the darker wheelhouse with mic drop endings. Devin's year was highlighted by audiobooks, digging deeper into cozy romantasy as well as incredibly sexy scenes. Either way, it was a banner year for reading and we hope you had a great one too!  Topics Discussed (10:40): The Dagger: 10: Three Assassins by Kotaro Isaka 9: Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke 8: What Happened to Nina? Summary: Welcome to spooky season (nerd edition) friends! Today Holly and Devin explore a joint favorite career through grim and gleeful stories - librarians. While both our hosts fantasized about working in libraries and being able to read all the time surrounded by thousands of books, they'll settle today for a chat about when librarians can use books for good, or for evil. Listen in to hear how librarians have important roles to play in any genre and are always a worthwhile addition to a good story.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:21): Holly discussed How Can I Help You by Laura Sims, a psychological suspense novel following Margot, a librarian in a small town public library. No one has any reason to suspect that Margot is in fact Jane, a nurse with a trail of premature deaths in her wake. Enter Patricia, a new reference librarian who starts working with Margot and gets curious about her past. Holly's key takeaways were: The suspense and writing of this novel stand out. Sims alternates between staggered timelines from Margot's and Patricia's points of view, with Margot's voice being especially crystal clear and unique.  Sims explores themes of obsession and addiction; Margot is obsessed with and addicted to feeling as if she's “helping others” (in a very twisted way) and we watch Patricia become obsessed with Margot who acts as her muse (in a very twisted way).  If you enjoy dark, almost so dark it's funny, character-driven suspense stories, especially involving libraries and medical malpractice, this story is for you.  The Heart (14:28): Devin discussed The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, a novel following Mika Moon, one of the few witches in Britain, as her solitary life is upended by an invitation to tutor three young witches in the remote and mysterious Nowhere House in Norwich. Finding community she's never had, Mika must also navigate her simmering dynamic with the handsome (if standoffish) librarian of the house, Jamie. Devin's key takeaways were: Everything about this book screams “cozy” and sparkles and safety and joy. Even when a dead body is uncovered it's somehow beautiful. Magic in this book floats around like gold dust and Mika can see it around her; it's rambunctious and well-meaning but gets up to tomfoolery. The biggest struggle Mika, Jamie and the other characters in this book must confront is their own loneliness. Mandanna does an incredible job articulating this complicated emotion and how it can impact adults and children alike; it's a manifesto on the importance of human connection. Nowhere House has a special collection of very rare books and Jamie presides over this unique and beautiful section of an otherwise chaotic house. The importance of books, reading, and the physical space Jamie guards and protects plays a major role in the story.  Hot On the Shelf (35:23): Devin: The Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer Holly: Amari and the Despicable Wonders by B.B. Alston What's Making Our Hearts Race (38:31): Devin: Veep on HBO Max Holly: Pachinko season 2   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

A Book Cougars first: we interview a writing duo! In our Author Spotlight segment, we talk with Alli Frank and Asha Youmans about their new novel THE BETTER HALF, how they started writing together, their path to publication, and their writing process. Spoiler: matching pajamas! Some episode highlights: We both read Ann Petry's powerful 1946 novel, THE STREET, for the Vintage Book Club (hosted by Book Club on the Go at Red Heat Tavern in South Windsor). This story about a struggling single mother in 1940s Harlem seems as relevant as ever and generated great discussion. We recommend the audio version narrated by Danielle Deadwyler. Emily read a novel about two women friends by Edgar Award-winning novelist Erin Flanagan. If you like twisty and dark stories about people who are not what they seem, COME WITH ME (out 8/22) is for you. She also enjoyed Jennifer Weiner's forthcoming beach read, THE BREAKAWAY (out 8/29), about a fat-positive protagonist who leads a bike tour. Emily also crossed off another square on her Scarlet Summer Bingo Card by reading/listening to WE RIDE UPON THE STICKS by Quan Barry, a story set in Danvers, MA with lots of 1980s love. Chris ripped through Laura Sims' new novel, HOW CAN I HELP YOU, a psychological mystery/thriller/suspense novel set in a small town library that revolves around two women who become obsessed with one another for very different reasons. Teaser: there's more than a nod to Shirley Jackson. And while waiting out a thunderstorm at the Acton Public Library in Old Saybrook, Chris read WHAT DID IT TAKE? a short biography by Whitney McKendree Moore about Anna Louise James. James, a fascinating woman in her own right, was Ann Petry's aunt. We recap our Biblio Adventure at the Grolier Club in NYC where we did some archival research (Emily is hooked!) and also had a browse at McNally Jackson Books at Rockefeller Center. On Wednesday, August 2nd, we're heading to Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA to see Laura Sims and Paul Tremblay in conversation. Come join us!

Four Questions Every Leader Should Ask (If They Want To Improve Performance)

Leadership AdvantEdge: Leadership | Influence | Talent | Neuroscience

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2021 11:22

Welcome to the Joy at Work Podcast with me, Dr John Kenworthy. In this guide we're learning the: Four questions every leader should be asking, if they want to improve performance. Introduction Improved performance requires growth. And without growth, our career is doomed to stagnation and eventual death. Am I exaggerating? Well, stop watering your plants for a few weeks and see what happens. Organizations that don't get better, don't improve their performance year on year are stagnating too. If you has a leader, don't grow, then your career will stagnate. You may be exceptionally good at what you do, but if you want to move up the hierarchy, you need to grow into that position before you get given it because afterwards is far too late. Plus you won't have developed your team to take on your job. So how can they promote you? How, then do we raise performance easily? Purpose Our purpose and payoff being prepared to learn and change, and put in the necessary effort, is a critical step in growth and improve. And getting yourself and team members to regularly consider what's going well. And what needs work is essential. If you want to improve performance. Process To do this, I'm sharing Four simple yet, oh, so powerful neuroscience-based questions that work to stimulate personal growth and the resulting conversations will take you in just five to 15 minutes of your time. Payoff Use it once now, as I guide you and you'll immediately gain one benefit with a very clear action for next week. Use it with your team members once and you'll gain one improvement in performance next week. Use it weekly. And you'll gain 52 improvements this year. The improvements don't have to be huge. Small gains add greatly. Before I start with the four questions, grab yourself a pen and paper or a iPad with a pencil, anything to make notes and be ready to pause as we go through this. The four questions starting off with keeping the good stuff. The Four Questions If I were to ask you to tell me how was work for you this past week or so the chances are very high that you would reply along the lines of : "it was okay, good. not bad, fine, or terrible. It's dull, boring, and not at all helpful. Instead, I'll ask: " Tell me, what three specific things that you enjoyed and, or believe that you did really well at work this week? So here, I'm going to give you a few moments to consider your answer, pause the player. If you're listening and write them down. If you can. Pause the player and write down your answer to the question. If this is your first time, you are probably finding this a little challenging. If you're replying nothing, uh, stop and find something go further back in time, if you need to, but do the work here. You'll thank me later. Got three things. Fantastic. If we were in a live coaching here, I'd be probing into your answers to help you dig out the beautiful gems. For now let your magnificent mind mull on these and let's get to the easy part. What Needs Work? Identifying what needs work. Now, if you struggled some with answering that first question, you are in very good company. Pretty well, all of my clients struggle with that first question because, well, we're so used to dwelling on this next part. What needs work. Ready? Here's your question: What is the one real challenge for you that if you improved or changed would have the greatest positive impact on your performance, now? Let me repeat that. And then I'll pause. What is the one real challenge for you that if you improved or changed would have the greatest positive impact on your performance, now? Again, pause the player and write down your answer. Got one? Not two or more choose one. Is it about somebody else changing? Then think again, this is about you, your performance. Great. Awesome. If you and I were in a coaching session right now, I'd be digging in to make sure that this is the real core challenge. So I'm going to add on a quick question to help you right now. Is there anything else that is the real, real challenge for you here? Now, before you rush off and start, I have two more questions for you. Next, let's get you motivated. Finding the Drive Finding the drive. What exactly do you want to achieve? If you or somebody of whom you're asking with this is struggling. Here's another approach. That's more specific to the change. What will you achieve by changing this one thing? Pause and write down your response. Many clients find this difficult to answer, principally because we're not taught to think like this. Yet the most successful leaders do know what they want to achieve. Write down your answer. Now that you know, let's ignite the touch paper and send you on your way. True Empowerment True empowerment. How can I help you? Here's your question? How can I help you? When you were asking this of your team, this question tells them that you are here to help them succeed. And do please remember empowerment and delegation are not the same thing: you delegate authority to someone to do something. You empower someone with the, to do the thing and the authority to do it. Delegation works fine when they know what they need to know and how to do what they need to do. If they don't, then and they need the power, which is the tools, the resources, the ability, the knowledge, as well as the authority to do it. And if you need my help get in touch. How and When to use This How and when should you use this? Well, you gain one immediate benefit using this just once for yourself. Use it once with your team and you'll get one improvement next week. Use it weekly and you'll see, 52 improvements next year! Those improvements may be small, but they quickly add up and soon enough, your team will be doing this for themselves continuously and multiplying your impact and your performance. What's Happening in The Brain? Let's go and check in what's happening in the brain. See, if you've been going through this exercise, your brains, just gone on a bit of a roller coaster ride. At the beginning by considering what you have done well, you're remembering positive, affirming strengths that you have displayed and you are feeling encouraged and good about yourself. Thanks to some Serotonin and Dopamine. It also, thanks to the Dopamine, reinforces those positive things to being repeated. Then, by considering what needs work, your brain takes a bit of a dive. A little Cortisol is triggered, maybe some Adrenaline too. If it's an unpleasant memory and your motivation levels drop, you're causing a deep thinking, pause and reflection, weighing up and prioritizing changes that will have a real impact on your performance. And you're already working out how to use your strengths, that you just talked, about to really lift these weak areas. By asking what you want to achieve, we reopen your brains motivation circuits to think of the future and your uncles. You begin to feel good about this. Thanks to more Dopamine and Serotonin, maybe some Endorphins too. And then by offering your help to your team members, they'll feel great in belonging and trust from Oxytocin, and you'll be able to truly empower them so that they lift their performance, feel motivated, more Dopamine, and you'll be lifting their ability to lead themselves and others too. Multiplying the impact you're having. And all it takes is five to 15 minutes of your time. Time that you're more than recovered within a few weeks, simply because you and your team are performing better. I know, it's amazing, isn't it? Summary So here's a quick summary of those four questions. "What three specific things that you enjoyed and, or believe you did well this week?" Question two: "What is the ONE real challenge for you that if you improved or change would have the greatest impact on your performance, what would that be? " Number three: "What do you want to achieve?" And 4th: "How can I help?" How Can I Help You, Now? Let me wrap this with that same last question. How can I help? I'm really asking this time. I use this approach with every client of mine at the start of every coaching session. They prepare for it with a simple worksheet so that it takes very little time so that we can spend more time on encouraging, developing, guiding, and empowering them. Now, if you're not ready for live coaching, we have a fabulous asynchronous coaching program for this, and you can start a one month trial by filling in the registration, which is linked here. Be greatly blessed. Bye for now. I'm thrilled that you joined me here for this Joy@Work Podcast, as I guide you in the Art and Behavioral Neuroscience of Expert Leadership, so that you can have Joy At Work and your Team has Purposeful Unity of Cohesion and Effort.

Without This, Your Leadership Development Will Fail

Often when we start a new project, when we begin to develop a new program, if we are lacking a certain ingredient, if we do not have one specific emotion, the project withers and dies. But when we possess it we will see the project through. This is Mark Jones the host of Coaching Christian Leaders and today I will share with you that one essential ingredient you must have to move your leadership development program forward. When we last met, you were taking your first steps in leadership development. You determined the leadership position to develop and then you created a one-page job description for that position. If you have not done that then take a few minutes to do so. What is that position you wish to develop? I am working on developing elders. Maybe you need to create youth leaders or build up your children’s staff. Maybe it’s a deacon or women’s ministry leader. Whatever, you need to identify it and then create a simple job description. In the last episode, I encouraged you to ask yourself this question – Why does my church need this leader now? And I wanted you to link your answer to your church’s mission statement. Here’s is what I mean by that. Our church’s mission statement is To Share Christ and Build Disciples. So when I ask myself Why does my church need elders now? – the answer must satisfy the mission statement. I need elders now to build more disciples. If your need does not satisfy your mission statement, then pick a different leader to develop. If you want some additional help with these steps just grab my worksheet titled First Steps. You can find it at CoachingChristianLeaders.com on the Worksheets tab. The First Steps Worksheet covers this episode and the previous two episodes. You can use it by yourself or print multiple copies and use it with your team. Go to CoachingChristianLeaders.com, open up the Worksheets tab, and grab your copy. Five Coaching Questions Today we are going to cultivate something essential. Very early in the creation of this leadership development program, we need this essential ingredient or the process will fail. What is it? It is a sense of Urgency. Why urgency? Without urgency, there will be no lasting motivation to take this on. There will be no passion in the process. And when there is no sense of urgency there is no forward momentum. How do create urgency? You will create urgency by answering the following coaching questions. So grab a piece of paper and something to write with or grab the First Steps Worksheet and let’s create some urgency. In order to create a sense of urgency, I am going to ask you five coaching questions. Take the time to honestly and fully answer each question. I wish I was sitting across from you. When I personally coach pastors, it is questions like the following five that I ask. And pastors grow dramatically as they think and answer each question. When I coach a pastor we explore each response and dive deep into the pastor’s situation. Since I am working with you via a podcast I want to encourage you to answer each question fully and honestly. Bounce these questions and your answers off of a close friend or mentor. Better yet, discuss them with a key leader in your church. Here’s question number one. Without this leader what is the current situation at your church? Take a minute and think this through. Then write down a short paragraph that explains the current situation without this leader. You are trying to assess the impact not having this leader makes on your church. I told you that I am working on developing some new elders. But for this question, I’ll use a different need as an example. I need a Children’s Ministry Director, someone to pull together our different children’s ministry teams and give them focus, training, and support. I have a Pioneer Club Director. I have someone overseeing Children’s Church. I do not have anyone overseeing Children’s Sunday school and I do not have a Children’s Ministry Director. Without this position filled and developed the different children’s ministries never coordinate with one another. The staff that teach the kids during Sunday School, mid-week Pioneer Clubs, and Children’s Church never go to any training. And we are really dropping the ball in how we minister to kids. So what about you? Without this leader what is the current situation at your church? What could be the situation at your church when this leadership position is filled? Wow, what a question! Let your imagination run wild. Envision what could be if you had this position filled and functioning at its fullest potential. Using my example of a Children’s Ministry Director, I see kids coming to Christ. I see staff connecting, coordinating, and serving at a high level. I see families growing in their faith.  I see a focused, trained, and supported children’s staff. What could be the situation at your church when this leadership position is filled and the leader fully developed? Here comes question number three. It’s time to dive deeper into creating a sense of urgency. Is the development of this position something that could be done or should be done? Think about that question for a second. Is the development of this position something that could be or should be done? What’s the difference between could and should? Could means that it can be done. It is a position that could be filled and developed. But something that should be done is something that must happen. You must fill this position. You must develop this leader. If you do not, there will be negative consequences. Only move forward in developing this position if the answer is “should be.” Just because you can do something is not a reason to do it. Only move forward if your answer is “should be.” How will you feel if this leader is not developed? I want you to tell me how it will hurt if you do not develop this leader? A sense of urgency comes when we know something should be accomplished and when we feel the hurt if it does not come to pass. If I do not develop a children’s ministry director, then kids and families will not grow in their faith. It is possible that kids in our community will not hear the gospel; at least from us. This greatly concerns me. And if I put names and faces to it, if I envision who it actually affects, then my heart breaks. How will you feel if this leader is not developed? And here is the final question. What are you willing to sacrifice to develop this leader? This is a tough question for me to ask because often the answer is time. It takes time to identify, train, and place a leader. And time is something most pastors do not have. If “time” is what you are willing to sacrifice, let me encourage you. The time you invest in leadership development you will receive back in spades once the leader is serving. Maybe “time” is not the answer you came up with. What are you willing to sacrifice to develop this leader? As you think about the answer, compare the thing sacrificed to the potential gain once the position is developed. You have to sow to reap. Those are the five questions to create urgency. I have created for you a worksheet that covers the first three episodes on Leadership Development. To get this worksheet go to Coaching Christian Leaders and click the link in the Worksheet Tab. There you can grab a copy of the First Steps Worksheet. How Can I Help You? These are typical coaching questions I ask my team and I ask those that I coach. When I provide personal coaching, these five questions take about an hour or more to cover. Why does it take so long? Because when the client answers, we explore the answer and dive deep into the actual situation at their church. Maybe that is something you need. Maybe you or your team needs some personal coaching. Email me at Mark@CoachingChristianLeaders.com and let’s set something up. A few sessions of coaching can be an amazing experience. And you will get the personal touch that this podcast can’t provide. Just email me at Mark@CoachingChristianLeaders.com and let’s explore some personal or team coaching to move your ministry forward. Thanks for listening to Coaching Christian Leaders. Monday, January 29, 2018. Education Leadership and Beyond: Surviving & Thriving with Andrew Marotta. 10 Ways Not to Suck with my guest: entrepreneur, author, adhd/add expert: Peter Shankman. Podcast #34 - aired Saturday 1/27/18. 9am live or on the app anytime country 107.7 WDLC, 106.9 WYNC, Wall Radio, & Pocono 96.7. I had the privilege of talking with Peter Shankman this week on Ed Leadership & Beyond. Peter is an awesome guy who is doing great things in NYC and beyond. Here is a short bio from his website: Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of pure creativity with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a dose of adventure, and make it work to your advantage. An author, entrepreneur and corporate keynote speaker, this “worldwide connector” is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about customer service, social media, PR, marketing, advertising, and ADHD. Show #34's concept was built around a speech Peter gave in 2017 called 10 Ways Not to Suck. He was frustrated about his flight experience on the way to the conference and changed his whole speech that morning. Want to NOT suck at what you do? Here's Peter's advice: 1. Do your HW...whatever you are involved in--guests, work, projects...do you hw and learn something about the person. I share the story of when I lost my Dad. It was my first game back officiating since his funeral services. I was shaking the hands of the coaches as I do each and every game. I got to the last assistant coach who pulled me in close and said " I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Father." Wow: that caught me off guard. It was like a punch to the face. I remember that moment with such clarity. It was such a small gesture, but an important one for me. I was impressed that "coach did his HW!" 2. Listen to your audience: hear them, listen to them, and give them what they ask for. This is not just a business concept, and can be used by all leaders. 3. Brand everything you do: In the technological world we live in, attach your name to everything you do. Peter shares the story of a cool video he made that has almost 2 million views on youtube, yet he failed to put his name to it. A golden opportunity missed yet an important lesson learned. 4. Be transparent--be honest: so simple, yet in our complex world, this virtue seems to be disappearing. With all that we see in gov't and the celebrity world, we don't see much of this. Peter is a real example of this. He says reach out to me--I can help you, and that is exactly what he did here. We connected about my book, his book, and bam: he was on the podcast. Transparent and up front. Great work Peter! 5. Relevant: make your work matter. There is so much garbage out there. Make your work, your life relevant. 6. Brevity: The great Hall of Fame Port Jervis HS teacher Kevin Birmingham told me when speaking in public: be like a comet: beautiful, memorable, and brief! 7. Top of mind: how can I help you? When you have this question in the forefront of your brain, you truly will be looking to help others in a meaningful way. I share the story of trying to help my wife in the kitchen. She's cooking, cleaning, and handling all that comes her way, and I USED to just barge in there, get in her way, and think I was helping her. Ahhh, no! She trained me in the ways of the force and now I ask her (and many others) those magic words: How Can I Help You? 8. Differentiate yourself: How do you stand out among the rest? 9. Understand yourself--what works for you: again a simple concept, yet very, very important. I guess we learn this more with age. As I write this blog at (9:14pm on a school night), I know I have to get to bed. 4:45am comes early and if I am going to have any chance at a good workout in the am, I need my rest. 10. Have a support team, a mastermind group: Who is in your kitchen cabinet? Book recommendation: Faster Than Normal, Peter Shankman Quote: “People with means give opportunities to people they trust. Be someone people trust” -Peter Shankman Next week's guest is: Dr. Marc Frankel, podiatrist, Milford, PA. Go out and change the world for the better. Peter is very open in our conversation about adhd & add. We spoke openly about eating, sleeping, alcohol, and making time for the important things in life. Peter is a living example of knowing oneself and doing the things that work for you. He also grew up about a mile away from me on the rock: Staten Island!

Mary’s voice resonates with a clarity and emotion that engages her listeners from the first note.
