What if temporary buildings could be as sustainable as permanent ones? In this episode, we talk with Thomas Hundt, co-founder of Jangled Nerves, about the sustainable future of exhibitions and architecture. Thomas shares fascinating stories, including the Mercedes-Benz Red Pavilion, where nearly all materials were reused or resold, making it a model of sustainability in temporary construction. He also explains how working under tight restrictions - like time and budget - can actually boost creativity, leading to some of his most innovative designs. Here's what you'll learn in this episode: The power of modular systems, where reusable building blocks create flexibility and reduce waste. How digital tools are transforming exhibitions, allowing for immersive experiences without the need for extensive physical builds. Whether you're into design, sustainability, or curious about how constraints spark creativity, this episode is packed with insights that will leave you thinking differently about temporary architecture. Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour...Key Insights:* A number of years ago, Brad DeLong said that it was time to “pass the baton” to “The Left”. How's that working out for us? #actually, he had said that we had passed the baton—that the absence since January 21, 2009 (or possibly January 21, 1993) of Republican negotiating partners meant that sensible centrism produced nothing—that Barack Obama had proposed John McCain's climate policy, Mitt Romney's health care policy, George H.W. Bush's entitlement-and-budget policy, Ronald Reagan's tax policy, and Gerald Ford's foreign policy, and had gotten precisely zero Republican votes for any of those. Therefore the only choice we had was to pass the baton to the Left in the hopes that they could energize the base and the disaffected to win majorities, and then offer strong support where there policies were better than the status quo.* But my major initial take was that the major task was to resurrect a sensible center-right, in which I wished the Niskanen Center good luck, but was not optimistic.* But everyone heard “Brad DeLong says neoliberals should ‘bend the knee'” to THE LEFT…* That is interesting…* Should neoliberals bend the knee?* How has the left been doing with its baton? Not well at all, for anyone who defines “THE LEFT” to consist of former Bernie staffers who regard Elizabeth Warren as a neoliberal sellout.* It has, once again, never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. * But the conditions that required passing the baton to the left—High Mitch McConnellism, Republican unity saying “NO!” to everything by every Republican to make the Black president look like a weak failure—no longer hold.* And the principal adversaries to good governance and a bright American future are reactionary theocrats, neofascist grifters, and true-believer right-neoliberals to the right and cost-disease socialists to the left.* But in the middle, made up of ex-left-neoliberals and nearly all other right-thinking Americans, are we supply-side progressives.* Instead, there is a governing coalition, in the Senate, composed of 70 senators, 50 Democrats and 20 Republicans, from Bernie Sanders through J.D. Vance—a supply-side progressive or supply-side Americanist coalition.* It is therefore time to snatch the baton back, and give it to the supply-side progressivist policy-politics core, and then grab as many people to run alongside that core in the race as we possibly can.* The Niskanen Center cannot be at the heart of the supply-side progressivist agenda because they are incrementalists and critics by nature.* The principal business of “Leftist” activists over the past five years really has been and continues to be to try to grease the skids for the return of neofascism—just as the principal business of Ralph Nader and Naderites in 2000 was to grease the skids for upper-class tax cuts, catastrophic financial deregulation, and forever wars.* &, as always, HEXAPODIA!References:* Beauchamp, Zack. 2019. Minnesota's most intensely debated art contest in memory is down to six designs for the next state flag and just a handful for the official seal, a tiny fraction of the more than 2,500 in total submissions. For Brandon Hundt, that two of his submissions — one for the flag and another for the seal — remain in contention is an achievement in itself.“This whole last 24 hours have just been surreal,” said Hundt, a Twin Cities based product designer and writer. Hundt spoke to MPR News on Wednesday after the State Emblems and Redesign Commission selected his concepts to move to final consideration.Sarah Agaton Howes, an Ojibwe artist and small business owner, also had a design make the cut.“I was just so excited and just thrilled to be able to even be a part of this process,” she said on Minnesota Now. “But to be able to have a flag that represents all of Minnesota is really exciting.”Todd Pitman of St. Paul, another flag designer, created F944, which he calls “Mirror of the Sky.” The flag was a family effort: he designed it with input from his parents. “I just truly love my home state, and I really feel like it deserves a flag as unique and dynamic as the people who make it such a wonderful place to live,” he said. Designer says abstract loon was unintentionalThe half-dozen finalists chosen from among the stack of serious and comical entries haven't escaped criticism online, and the commission making the selection could refine the designs before a final vote. The commission hasn't released the names of all of the designers with entries in the mix, saying it wants to contact them first. But some have been vocal about their work, even posting about their concepts while the panel deliberated on Tuesday. Each designer said they reviewed and stuck closely to the parameters laid out by the citizen panel formed by the Legislature to pick a new flag and state seal. The current flag and seal have similar features that depict a white farmer tilling the land as an Indigenous man rides off on a horse. For Agaton Howes, the fact the state is replacing the emblems is important in its own right.“The flag that we currently have is really harmful and really based on Native nations disappearing,” she said. “And so I'm really excited to just represent who we are as Minnesotans, and also, as a Native person.” Agaton Howes entered F1435, a flag with a prominent yellow star and green nods to nature on a blue background; the sides have yellow stripes to represent tribal nations and white ones for each of Minnesota's 87 counties.Hundt's flag entry, F29, has a deep blue background with two stars overlaid, one reminiscent of a snowflake.Hundt has been fine-tuning his flag design since 2015 when he first posted online about his distaste for a Minnesota flag he said was hardly very symbolic or distinctive and had way too much on it.“Flags should be simple because they're up on a flagpole, often very high,” Hundt said. “And I think that's the thing that often gets overlooked. We need to think about how these flags are going to look on a flagpole.”Pitman is a graphic designer, but this is outside his usual realm of web design. He committed to the task at hand, becoming a member of the North American Vexillological Association and studying up on flag design. He said his flag design started with a squiggle shape inspired by the aurora, mirrored on the top and bottom half. Along the way, he and his father noticed that the shape looked a little like another commonly-submitted flag feature: a loon. “To quote Bob Ross, let's call it a happy accident,” he said. Revision process could result in changes to designEach have girded themselves for public criticism, much of which popped up quickly online as the stack of entries was whittled to six. Hundt said he won't have a problem if the State Emblems Redesign Commission members play around with the features or colors before picking the ultimate flag.Hundt also has a finalist in the state seal category.“I'm really glad there's a revision period with the commission. That is something that is missing from a lot of other flag processes that I've seen when I've looked into them,” he said. “Because I think it's very important to actually test how the flag would work, how the seal would work before you throw it out there fully in use.”Agaton Howes sees it similarly.“That's a really important part of working in community is being willing to have that back and forth. And I do that all the time. And all my design work, whether that's designing a wool blanket or designing an art installation, that's just a big part of the process,” she said. “And I'm here for it. I'm ready for it.”‘Flags are really powerful'The final selections will be made by the end of the year. The Legislature can vote to block them but if that doesn't happen the emblems will take hold on May 11 — Statehood Day.If their design is chosen in whole or in part, the artists will get some public recognition. But there won't be prize money or any other direct compensation. Pitman said he is excited to see a new state flag. “I know that the decision is in good hands, no matter the outcome,” he said.Agaton Howes said her reward will be a sense of pride. “I think that flags are really powerful. And I think that their way to claim it space, and I really want to have an image that I can my kids can feel proud of, that our communities can feel proud of,” she said. “And I'm absolutely willing to do that.”Pitman said all six are “very strong contenders.”“I'm obviously very biased, but I think that no matter what … all Minnesotans will be able to be proud to look up at the flagpole on May 11th and say, ‘That's my flag, that's my state.'” Do you know who designed the other flag finalists? Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Intensive Farming Systems: Results from an ETH Zürich-IFPRI Collaborative study Co-organized by IFPRI, ETH Zürich, and Bayer DEC 6, 2022 - 10:00 TO 11:30AM EST The growth of our global food production capacity over the past century is unprecedented, and has been facilitated by advances in crop breeding, mechanization, intensification, and the application of chemical inputs. This has come at a cost in terms of biodiversity loss and land degradation. This apparent trade-off between productivity and environment can be resolved through adoption of new farming practices that emphasize restoring and maintaining biodiversity on agricultural land to the benefit of soils and crops. The science underpinning such practices is still being developed and trialed, but we know enough to propose alternative management principles. Similarly, farmers have long been experimenting and adapting their farming systems, sometimes drawing on scientific outputs, but more often than not drawing on their own experiential learning and knowledge exchange across farmer networks. In recognition of the developing science coupled with the growing interest of farmers in exploring new approaches to enhance farm resilience, ETH Zurich and IFPRI are pleased to share their research findings undertaken as part of the Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Crop Production project, supported by Bayer. Over the course 2021-2022, ETH Zurich and IFPRI, together with partners in Germany, France, Brazil, and the USA, conducted systematic reviews of the scientific literature, complemented with interviews with farmers in each country, to evaluate management options for enhancing biodiversity and resilience in crop production. A panel composed of farmers, researchers, government and private sector actors will then comment on these research findings through the lens of farm management realities, and offer their perspectives on how to advance this area of research and how to achieve greater coherence of multiple policies, programs, and efforts. Texas-based photographer and multi-media artist Kris Hundt shares her Peter Pan approach to creativity in this delightful interview. She consciously maintains a state of play where she doesn't judge her subjects and shares herself in a place of joy.According to Kris, it's by letting ourselves become vulnerable and opening a space for whatever it is that we enter the realm of creative play. She has learned to see her photography clients and students without judgment and let them be who they are. She approaches each portrait as a collaboration with her subject, drawing inspiration from the personal connections she forges during the shoot. As a teacher, she encourages people to play. People get caught up in their heads instead of letting it flow through their hearts. A lifelong traveler of exotic locales like Egypt, Israel, Guatemala, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Peru, and the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, Kris shares her story of the secret of a smile and a thank you when traveling alone. "If we're going to accelerate implementation and see those results in the near term and the long term...I think it takes visionary leadership and acceptance of being able to take some risks, be bold, be daring. Understand that sometimes if you take on a new initiative, or a new venture, it may not be as wildly successful as you could have imagined...But at the end of the day, it might be the thing that is the game changer for your company, for your community, for your region, here in Michigan." - Ryan HundtMichigan Works! Association is the workforce development engine for the state of Michigan. With 16 regional workforce agencies and 99 physical locations across the state, Michigan Works! is providing the resources to get Michiganders into high-wage, high-demand careers and driving massive economic growth for the state.Chief Executive Officer Ryan Hundt joins us for this episode to discuss all things workforce development. States across the U.S. should take notes on the model and strategies Michigan Works! has implemented that are unique, successful and will drive long-term impact in the state.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:The Michigan Works! model enables a comprehensive, cohesive workforce development strategy statewide: The Michigan Works! Association is truly unique in its structure. By having a centralized entity with regional agencies spread across the state, the association is able develop strategies that are cohesive statewide. It also enables Michigan Works! to have a strong voice to advocate for its members at the state and national levels. The model also enables the unique needs of each region to be met: Michigan is a diverse state - every region has different industries and workforce and economic development needs. The 16 regional agencies are able to address those unique local needs, meeting employers and individuals in their own towns with the resources they need.Workforce development is about far more than employment: Solving the workforce shortage and getting people back to work is a complex, multi-faceted issue.
