Dave Ruel is a former competitive physique athlete turned into a serial entrepreneur, speaker, leadership mentor, and author of the best-selling book, Done by Noon: How to Achieve More by Noon Than Other Entrepreneurs in a Full Day.    In today's episode, we're going to discuss Dave's entrepreneurial journey and a few lessons he learned about freedom in the process.    Dave's Entrepreneurial Journey   Dave's journey started with his passion for fitness. In 2007, he competed in a bodybuilder show in Newfoundland, Canada, and he met Lee Hayward, a competitive bodybuilder, and owner of Total Fitness Bodybuilding. Hayward told Dave he was making six figures a year from his fitness blog, inspiring a drive and desire for Dave to do the same.    Dave traded his passion for fitness for an obsession with business. He learned as much as he could about starting a digital business until he could go full-time with his own blog and business, Muscle Cook, in 2009. His business aimed to help fitness lovers with meal plans and nutrition.    “Becoming an entrepreneur is like becoming an athlete,” Dave said. “You can start with natural tendencies or natural talent but eventually you need to acquire the skills to become a champion.”   Dave launched cookbooks, and from there he started getting attention. Dave explained that his biggest home run was creating that first product, the cookbook since it was the first thing that helped propel his career forward. Since then, he has helped found and grow multimillion-dollar online companies in the field of health, fitness, and sports nutrition for nearly a decade.   However, Dave saw the dark side of entrepreneurship, and the side gradually robbed him of his freedom, leaving him burned out and unfulfilled. Refusing to conform to a broken business culture that promotes workaholism and non-stop hustle, Dave created sustainable structures and systems for his life and business to reclaim his freedom without sacrificing the growth of his companies.    Fueled by his passion for entrepreneurship and human performance, he launched Ethic, an innovative leadership development company that helps busy entrepreneurs maximize their impact and freedom.    5 Truths About Entrepreneurship   As entrepreneurs, it can be easy to get buried in our workloads and overwhelmed with to-do lists; we get lost and burnt out. In the process of trying to find our freedoms with entrepreneurship, we end up losing them, just as Dave did in his fitness businesses. In his book, Done by Noon, Dave shared five truths about life and business as entrepreneurs we should be aware of to help us avoid burnout.      All Entrepreneurs Want Freedom     Dave explained that entrepreneurs want one thing: freedom. We want the freedom of time, the freedom of creation, and financial freedom. That's why we do what we do.   The freedom of time allows us to do what we want to do when we want to do it. With the freedom of time, we can choose to spend more time with our family or choose to go on frequent trips. We want the freedom of creativity to work on whatever we want. Instead of working for someone else, we can choose to design new products or create new services to help others. And we want financial freedom. We want a business that can provide enough income for us to live the lifestyle we want.    However, in order to achieve these freedoms, we need to work hard. In Dave's book, he explained that we need to learn to juggle our skills and use our time and energy as fuel for our businesses.      Entrepreneurs Love to Work      Entrepreneurs love to work. In his book, Dave explained that when he asked entrepreneurs what they would do if their business made them enough money to never work again, true entrepreneurs said they would still continue to work. That is because our work and our businesses give us creative freedom. If we aren't working, we miss an important link. We may have the freedom of time and money, but we won't be able to be as creative as we'd like.    In his book, Dave wrote, “In the early stages of your entrepreneurial journey, the truth is that you'll be focused on earning enough money to support your lifestyle. Then, once you've achieved financial freedom, you can start enjoying the freedom of time and freedom of creation.”    Deep down inside, we are creators. The desire to create and have momentum and growth fuels our desire to work.    “You could be a great business owner . . . who has amazing, fantastic business management skills, . . . [but] this doesn't make you an entrepreneur necessarily,” Dave said. “An entrepreneur is like a practical artist.”      Drift Happens     Even though we want freedom, we will eventually start drifting away from that freedom because business happens. At one point or another, we will find that we wander off the path of our main goal.   “The truth is along the way drift will happen,” Dave said. “Why? Because of business habits. You will do things that you never thought you would do. You will do things that will prevent you from working. . . . It happens to every single entrepreneur.”   When we start a business, our main goal is often very clear to us. We know our expertise. But, as things get busier and busier, we may find ourselves doing other tasks that lead away from our main goal. We begin to drift. This will often lead to wasted time and energy as we slowly move away from focusing on our area of expertise.    To avoid drifting, we should constantly check in on our daily tasks and make sure we are focusing on our superpowers, strengths, and what we are best at to maximize success.      Work and Life Balance Doesn't Work     “Work/life balance doesn't work,” Dave said. “And the reason being is that when you look at it from a perspective that work and life are two different things, they compete against each other.”   Instead of trying to balance two separate lives, our work life, and our personal life, we can strive to merge them together. Dave's entrepreneurial journey started by forming a business around his lifestyle. He had a passion for fitness and began to share fitness and health information with others. His life's passion became his business.      Our Priorities Will Change     Over time, our priorities may change. As entrepreneurs, we could start off with one goal but slowly shift to something else as things change. This isn't a bad thing. It's okay for us to make new goals and start new projects.    We talk a lot about business tectonic shifts on this show, and if we aren't willing to change or switch our priorities when we see business tectonic shifts, our business may suffer.    3 “S's” of Leverage   In addition to the five truths of entrepreneurs in business, Dave shared the three “S's” of leverage. These three things will help us beat out our competition.      Strengths     We need to understand our strengths. What are our superpowers? What are we the best at? We should focus our time, energy, and resources on working in areas we are the expert in.    “Using your strengths is the best way for you to manage your resources properly,” Dave said. “Every single time you're going to do something that you're not that great at, it's going to take quite a bit of effort, quite a bit of energy, and more time.”    By focusing on using our strengths to grow our businesses, we become more efficient. It may not be easy to understand what those strengths are at first, but we can start to review our work and performance to determine what areas we are the best in.    When I asked Dave to share a secret for entrepreneurs to achieve sustainable performance and productivity, he said it is to manage our resources effectively, and one of the best ways we can do this is to understand our strengths. Efficiency is the ability to produce something with the least amount of resources.    As we manage our time, resources, and attention based on our strengths, we will find more success.      Structure     “If you don't have structure, you will not get the results that you want. Leverage a good structure that is sustainable, that is solid and that obeys efficiency,” Dave said.    In order to be successful in our business and maintain efficiency, we need to establish a strong structure that will help us run the overall goals of our business. To start building a strong structure, we need to set clear goals and objectives.    “What's the desired outcome? What do you really want to accomplish? Be very, very clear on that,” Dave said. “And based on that, look at your input and say, ‘How can I manage my three finite resources: my time, my energy, and my attention? Those are resources that I have as an entrepreneur. How can I manage that to make sure that the machine has a long life?'”     Systems     The third “S” we need to focus on is our systems. How can we efficiently use systems to work within the structures we have in place? “Understand that you will need to implement different systems in your life and your business in order . . . to optimize what you're doing,” Dave said.    The systems in our business help the day-to-day tasks run smoothly. We should have clear communication within and between systems so that everyone can stay on the same page and do their job effectively.    “It's [about] understanding . . . what my strengths are, understanding what's the best structure for me and my business, understanding what the best systems are for me and my business, and using that as leverage to really create what you want,” Dave said.    Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Dave for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:     Entrepreneurs want the freedom of time, the freedom of creation, and financial freedom, and entrepreneurship can often help us achieve those freedoms.   Entrepreneurs love to work their craft because it gives us creative freedom. The desire to create and have momentum and growth fuels our desire to work.  Instead of trying to balance two separate lives, our work life, and our personal life, we can strive to merge them together in a healthy way. Over time, our priorities will probably change. That's normal. When that happens, we can set new goals. We should develop and leverage our strengths, structures, and systems to create and manage a successful business.    Connect with Dave   If you want to learn more about or connect with Dave you can: Connect with him on LinkedIn  Visit his company website at effic.co or his personal website, DaveRuel.com     Next Steps   Do you want to take your digital monetization to the next level?   Get a free ebook about passion marketing, and learn how to become a top priority of your ideal customers at PassionMarketing.com.  Subscribe to Monetization Nation on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, our Facebook Group, and on your favorite podcast platform.   Read at: https://monetizationnation.com/blog/5-truths-about-life-and-business-as-entrepreneurs/

In this episode we talk about the difference between chronic and acute.  Acute events get all the publicity - these are dramatic and rare occurences where we usually have a story to tell afterwards.  In Nancy's field of dentistry, this is akin to a child getting his front teeth knocked out from a nasty fall.  In Dave's field of engineering, this would be akin to a flood event because floods are rare, dramatic,  and newsworthy.  But the real pain, the real damage, comes from chronic and slow moving degradation, not the rare but dramatic events.  The same holds true for relationships, be they marriages or friendships.  Years can go by and you can find yourself in a place and wonder how they heck you got there?  Listen in as we talk about how this relates to our work, our relationships, and our health.

Today, Leafy Podcast host Jennifer Gligoric talks with Dave Zook, CEO and Founder of The Real Asset Investor.  Dave has acquired over $100 million in multi-family apartment investing and self-storage investing.  Dave started to ‘Pivot’ back in 2017, once he saw the bell curve for multi-family starting to fall and began investing in self-storage instead. He tells us that self-storage, even in a downturn, is a great investment because peoples’ habits are to want to hold on to their valuable “stuff”, even when losing a house, etc.  For Dave’s investment model, he is always looking for cash flow and tax benefits, which lead him to begin investing in ATM machines.  He and his investors have machines strategically placed throughout New York in toll plazas, McDonalds, train stations, airports; institutional locations.  Dave’s company manages these machines and the profit breakdown for investors is about 24.5% cash on cash returns. Dave tells us great places for these ATM machine investments right now are high foot traffic places like grocery stores and gas stations, where there is the densest traffic during the pandemic. In Dave’s own very interesting lifestyle, he has not seen a huge difference in operations during this Covid19 Pandemic and is still out looking for more opportunities in the market.  In closing, Dave tells us about his latest investment opportunity in Shale oil, used in the medical industry for IVs, etc.To learn more about Dave Zook and to pick up a copy of his book , visit his website: https://www.therealassetinvestor.com/

Today’s show is brought to you by THE DAVE BULLIS PODCAST Wow, so here we are at a very grand milestone for Film Pro Productivity and I’d like to thank all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules and joining me here on this very special occasion. I’m not going to launch this one with any grand fanfare though as next weeks episode is not only the final show of this season but it is also the New Year special. I’ll talk more about that a little later but first let me look back at the last show, which was all about OUTRAGE CULTURE, a blight on the modern world if ever there was one. In that show, I delve into that topic and shed light on a grand manipulation pulled by strings held by the world media. It’s called Outrage Porn and it's available to listen to right now so if you have a few minutes to spare, go check it out. Now Albert Einstein once said “…the exaggerated esteem in which my lifework is held makes me very ill at ease. I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler.” And that feeling - spoken by a man that most today would regard as an unprecedented genius, is a very good example of how IMPOSTER SYNDROME manifests itself. I often have to remind myself that the topics I cover here, some of which I have been thinking of for many years, are often entirely new concepts to many listeners. The term IMPOSTER SYNDROME was coined in the late ’70s by psychologists Dr Clance and Dr Imes and describes the feeling that HIGH ACHIEVERS have when they cannot recognize their success and are afraid of being exposed as a fake. According to these doctors, it can be identified in three ways: Feeling a fraud and being afraid of being ‘found out’. Attributing success to anything but your own achievements. Downplaying your achievements. The term imposter syndrome is interchangeable for Imposter phenomenon, fraud syndrome or impostor experience but I’m going to refer to it as mostly today as IMPOSTORISM. Impostorism is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud". I’ve touched upon it before in my season one episode entitled THE INNER CRITIC but today I want to get very specific about what it is, how it limits and damages us and what we can do to overcome it. A recent study noted that 70% of successful people had experienced feelings of imposter syndrome in their lives... And as it’s only the most awesome and highly successful people on the planet that listen to this show, I figured that this episode will be particularly relevant to you today. Initial studies of this phenomenon were focussed on women but over the years there have been many more and it’s now very evident that the problem of IMPOSTORISM is something that to an extent affects all genders and ethnicities. Even now in my quiet moments, I suspect that I am going to walk onto a film set to discover that I just don’t know what I’m doing and that someone of import there is going to ask me to leave and bring in someone to replace me. Over the years too I have very often dodged the bullet of direct praise by bouncing it off onto others that have been involved. I’m simply not comfortable with praise. I find it kind of embarrassing and try to slink away from it when offered. I don’t mean to be rude when this happens I just don’t like being in the limelight. Mostly though, I’ve been able to control these feelings. It took me years and years but I can now say pretty confidently, that I not only know what I’m doing in as much as it is possible to do so but that I’m really very good at what I do and deserve the payments and the accolades which I’ve had over the years. It’s hard to say that without sounding arrogant but I’ll stand by it. The pressure of not wanting to sound like I'm full of myself or arrogant, especially since I’ve worked with many people who really were arrogant and I don’t want to appear to others as they appeared to me - is something I do struggle with though. I find that it is always easier for someone else to announce how wonderful you are, rather than to do so yourself, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t believe it in yourself of course. A couple of things have happened recently which have strengthened my self-belief. The first was pretty simple. Partly due to my role here as the host of this podcast, I came to the realisation that everything doesn’t have to be perfect, just good enough. That knowledge takes the pressure off feeling like you are expected to know it all and to be perfect – which is good news indeed for a recovering perfectionist like myself. I have an affirmation I use, and I talked about affirmations a few episodes ago – check it out if you missed it, but the one I use now is that I CAN ONLY SEE SO FAR. No matter how hard I plan, I may still have to adapt on the day. This realisation takes the pressure of perfectionism off everything that I do but still allows me to plan in detail what I am doing. Secondly and I kind of hate going on about it but I got treated very badly a couple of times this year and have had to change my outlook and my way of working quite considerably as a result. As I mentioned numerous times this season, it actually resulted in my giving up on filmmaking, which I’d been doing for 12 years, but there’s only so much a person can take. Being looked down upon by idiots who have little or no understanding of matters on which I am an expert got me so annoyed that I finally called them out and when that happened the switch flipped in my head and I realised – wait a minute here – I AM THE EXPERT HERE not THEM. I won’t allow myself to be treated as an inferior again, and so I’ve worked hard to subdue my feelings of imposterism and stand up for my rights. A few episodes ago I also tackled the topic of bullying, and you may have to use some of the advice from that show to get back control for yourself. Lesson Now Jodie Foster famously suffers from this (She passed me once at the Cannes Film Festival and smiled in my general direction – just an aside - but I feel I know her now) She famously said - ‘When I won the Oscar, I thought it was a fluke. I thought everybody would find out, and they’d take it back. They’d come to my house, knocking on the door, “Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep.”‘ That’s a really common theme with imposterism btw, Have you ever looked at someone else in your line of work and thought, I’m not as good as them, or as worthy of my place as them? I know I have… So to follow up on Jodie’s quote there,  Meryl Streep said on this topic ‘You think, “Why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?”‘ Unquote You can never be a mind reader folks, so don’t even try. It’s getting you nowhere. The human brain has a negativity bias so you will always think the worst. The sort of people who most often suffer from the syndrome include “Perfectionists” who set extremely high expectations for themselves, “Experts” who feel the need to know every piece of information before they start a project, “Soloists” who feel they have to accomplish tasks on their own, and if they need to ask for help, they think that means they are a failure or a fraud and “Supermen” or “superwomen” who push themselves to work harder than those around them to prove that they’re not impostors —and feel stressed when they are not accomplishing something. I think I was one of those for a while. It didn’t end well. Do you think you might fit into one of these categories? And why do people suffer from Imposterism? In an article in Time Magazine by ABIGAIL ABRAMS, we discover that there’s no single answer. Some experts believe it has to do with personality traits—like anxiety or neuroticism— Psychologist Audrey Ervin focuses on family or behavioural causes. Sometimes childhood memories, such as feeling that your grades were never good enough for your parents or that your siblings outshone you in certain areas, can leave a lasting impact. “People often internalize these ideas: that in order to be loved or be lovable, ‘I need to achieve,’” says Ervin. “It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.” Unquote. The IMPOSTOR CYCLE is described as follows. First, they’ll become anxious, which can make them spend too much time on the task or procrastinate and then rush to finish it. Once the project is done, they’ll feel relieved and accomplished. The feeling of relief when a project is over is something I have experienced many times. I am nearing the end of this series which has been very tough for me, and this feeling of anxiety about it all is extremely heightened right now. Next, The cycle continues as they won’t accept positive feedback. They’ll ignore the fact that they could actually be smart or talented — insisting that they got lucky, or just worked a lot without having real skills. They don’t think they deserve success, which creates more anxiety, so the cycle repeats itself once more.   IMPOSTORISM takes what we all know as self-doubt and magnifies it. I am trying to be careful not to drift too far from the topic so I’ll leave more general issues about confidence and self-belief for another show. If, however, what I’m going on about here is something you think applies to you then don’t panic - there are some simple ways you can start to overcome it: First things first - remember: everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Remind yourself that your best is good enough. As I said on my episode on perfectionism though, this is not a that’ll do, It’s accepting that your GOOD ENOUGH can be really very good indeed. Talk to someone. You are not alone – I’ve been researching for this for a few days and I can say that without exception, everyone that I have spoken to about it has recognised it in themselves. Share what you’re feeling with trusted friends or mentors. People who have more experience can reassure you that what you’re feeling is normal, and knowing others have been in your position can make it seem less scary. If you want to delve more deeply into these feelings, then seek out a professional psychologist. There’s no shame in that and it is affordable despite what you may think. Having a really strong support system and getting on-going feedback that validates your efforts and outcomes is important for improving confidence levels. Lastly, believe in yourself and ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS. Take recognition for the work you did, treat yourself and move on. I’ve mentioned this before too and it’s part of what is known as the CYCLE OF PRODUCTIVITY. If you don’t acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, if you miss that part out, then YOU ARE DOING YOURSELF A DISSERVICE and burying your accomplishments in the past. RECOGNISE YOUR SUCCESSES and THE FAILURES FROM WHICH YOU HAVE LEARNED and celebrated them. Write down lists of your achievements, skills, and successes to demonstrate that they really do have concrete value to share with the world. When it’s there in black and white, it can’t be denied. Summing Up Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Grapes Of Wrath, John Steinbeck, also fought feelings of inadequacy – he said “I am not a writer. I’ve been fooling myself and other people.”  Imposterism can be debilitating, causing stress, anxiety, low self-confidence, shame and in some cases, DEPRESSION. Perhaps the most damaging part of dealing with imposter syndrome is that it can limit our courage to go after new opportunities, explore potential areas of interest, and PUT OURSELVES OUT THERE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY. Remember “You can still have an impostor moment, but not an impostor life.” Call To Action If today’s topic has resonated with you then I want you to begin to understand the power of your attitude toward yourself. How you perceive yourself, how you talk about yourself, and how you represent yourself eventually becomes a reality for you. One of the first steps to overcoming impostor feelings is to acknowledge your thoughts and put them in perspective. And this is a huge part of productivity too – Self-assessment is an ESSENTIAL SKILL to develop if you are trying to improve yourself. “Simply observing your thoughts as opposed to engaging them” can be helpful, so try and ask yourself ‘Do these thoughts help or hinder me?’” And if it happens that you're putting yourself down, belittling your worth, and making light of your talents, then you will come across as self-effacing, low in self-esteem, and almost a part of the wallpaper. You will also come across as I believe I did myself to some, A PUSHOVER. Your call to action is Take a few moments RIGHT NOW to celebrate your victories and achievements. Take this further by identifying a specific time each week where you can look back over what you have achieved and celebrate it each and every week from now on. Don’t miss out this crucial part of the productivity cycle. If you have a diary, write it in there. Write my achievements and schedule 15 minutes to look back and think on them. This is part of the productivity cycle – if you DON’T do this, you are setting yourself up for a much harder journey ahead. The 15 minutes you commit to this, and it may take less, are more valuable than having 15 minutes of free time. Ending Comedian and time-travelling international man of mystery Mike Myers says “At any time I still expect that the no-talent police will come and arrest me.” If that sounds like you, then I hope this episode will guide you to a better place. Last week I watched the Netflix Doc The Great Hack. It made me consider on how our minds and decisions are increasingly being manipulated, not just with elections. I fear we are surrendering our curiosity, questioning and decision making capacity to machines that increasingly learn how understand us, affect us and direct us. This made me reflect on the imperative for curiosity. Does this seem like a non sequitur? Ok let me expand. Let's start with Einstein. Einstein said he was not a genius just passionately curiousIn Episode 8 I interviewed Dave Birss. In Dave's - Book How to Get to Great Ideas - Dave cites divergence as a crucial skill and references Einsteins youthful disruption in class; his failure to shine and divergence from the classroom norm that resulted in the failure and rejection, that in turn enabled him to to continue pursuing his unconventional thinking and thought experiments...without which he would not have developed his theory of relativity. If curiosity is a vital ingredient to invention and discovery I'd adapt the quote we have used many times to this ‘success is not final, failure is not fatal, its having the curiosity and courage to continue that counts' And maybe that is why in today's world many autocratic consider curiosity to be a threat, challenging and disruptive. So this made me think more about disruption. We all strive for disruptive ideas in our industries as we to seek out competitive advantage, yet we discourage, marginalize or penalize the disruptors in our classrooms, schools, and universities, as we attempt to mould the unconventional to follow conventional thinking and suppress creativity. Ken Robinson was so right with his seminal 2006 TED talk. Why is curiosity and creativity more important than ever? Reality check: We live in a world that rewards specialization. As armies of digital specialists expand to fuel and power digital factories and output in a way that mirrors the specialisms of the Industrial Age, and the methods of Frederick Winslow Taylor's scientific management approach, we need to face the near and present danger that AI and machine learning poses. As AI encroaches on all industries, we as individuals need to cultivate new skills and knowledge to empower our ability to evolve and develop new creative domain experience and expertise we will need to remain relevant and employable in a world where new abilities, skills and jobs, and maybe never before imagined, will emerge. Curiosity is our passport stamp to future survival. We need to reconnect with that wondrous child like curiosity where we seek to learn more and question everything, especially the status quo.As algorithms increasingly influence and determine our decisions, based on recommendations, and as bad actors strive to hack our hearts and feelings, we humans are at risk of becoming the programmable automotoms, slaves to the machines we have built. An algorithmically curated world hinders divergent thinking. We are no longer exploring if we are served up everything. Curiosity must become our innately human act of rebellion against these machine driven and dictated recommender decision engines. Curiosity and non-conformist thinking must become our ultimate, inalienable and final human right. The freedom of thought, to wonder, and discover, through serendipity. The right to question and ask why? Or Why not? To challenge the answers we are given. We need the courage to dare, to desire and delight in being different, to sek out, summon and surround ourselves with those vital sparks that start a cascade of creativity, feed our yearning for learning, and... In Dave's words: I saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan.  My course was set. I started my musical career as lead singer of the 1970s rock group Jamestown Massacre (Billboard Top 100 Song 'Summer Sun') and doing commercial jingle work in Chicago. I was lead singer of the rock band Survivor from 1978-1983 and 1993-1999, and co-lead singer 2013-2014. I was the voice of 'Eye Of The Tiger' the theme song for the film Rocky III, and #1 on the Billboard charts for six weeks. The song won a Grammy Award for 'Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.' From 1999-2009 I was the singing voice behind the most award winning radio campaign in advertising history ('Real Men of Genius') for Bud Light beer.  Bickler was born in North Dakota, moved to Willmar, Minnesota, and then graduated from Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois. His career began in 1968 as one of two lead singers and a musician in the early 1970s American rock group Jamestown Massacre. The group's single "Summer Sun" was a Billboard Top 100 and Easy Listening chart entry in the summer of 1972. Bickler met Jim Peterik while doing commercial jingles in the mid-1970s, leading to their future partnership in the band Survivor.  In 2009, Dave Bickler posted several new songs he was writing and recording for a future solo project via his Twitter account and website. On September 28, 2018, he released his debut solo album, Darklight. Dave Bickler is best known as an original member of Survivor from 1978 to 1983. He rejoined with co-founders Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik in 1993, staying until early 2000. He was a part of the group for their first four albums: Survivor, Premonition, Eye of The Tiger, and Caught in the Game. Although primarily serving as the band's lead vocalist during this time, he is also credited with playing keyboards on Survivor's first two albums (including being the sole keyboardist on their debut album, before rhythm guitarist Jim Peterik began to take over the role on Premonition, although future releases would see Peterik replaced in-studio by session musicians). Survivor experienced their big breakthrough in 1982, when they were asked by Sylvester Stallone to provide the theme song for his movie Rocky III. The song, "Eye of the Tiger", soon turned into one of the biggest hits of the band's career. It had an enormous impact on the Billboard charts, soaring to #1 for seven weeks. The song won the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, was voted "Best New Song" by the People's Choice Awards and received an Academy Award nomination. Thanks to the song's success and another Top 20 single, "American Heartbeat", the album Eye of the Tiger peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. The song remains popular today. It came in at #18 on the "Top 100 Singles" chart in Billboard's 100th Anniversary issue and it is well over the 300,000 mark on the iTunes Store, where it once held #9 on their "Top Soundtrack" chart. Bickler left the band in late 1983 after he developed polyps on his vocal cords and required surgery and voice rest, a condition that would take a year and a half to recuperate from. After leaving Survivor, Bickler continued recording with other groups in the Chicago area and doing commercial jingles and ads. Guest: Dave Foster. We discuss the evolution of the military-industrial complex, Cold War weapons systems and “last war-ism.” In Dave’s own words: “The U.S. status quo model of the military is one composed of advanced conventional forces equipped with modern ships, planes, tanks, sensor networks, and logistic capability and also nuclear weapons. The Pentagon, the broader government, and the industrial base is beholden to this status quo and favored visions of future operations. The Pentagon can modify to a degree for operations but finds it difficult to adapt structurally to new realities. The primary reasons are financial. Last War-ism and nostrums of future scenarios always vastly outweigh truly fresh thinking. The commitment to the ideas of the past that exist today – as business relationships, existing infrastructure, organizations, systems, plans, and past research – dominate the Pentagon’s budget. With rare exception, the entire Pentagon budget funds the status quo.” Dave Foster is a data analyst in the private sector. Do you remember the comedy dry zone? I’m talking about the barren, hardscrabble times when getting a free laugh from the comfort of your toilet wasn’t easy. Before Internet memes, before parody Twitter themes, before viral SNL skits, before ShowerThoughts subreddits, before LOLCats and even before giant email chats… … there was one man. The inimitable, indomitable, indefatigable Dave Barry. Beginning in 1983 and running for over twenty years, Dave Barry sent his syndicated humor column out to over 500 newspapers from his home base at The Miami Herald. Every single week his columns offered guaranteed laughs and a fresh, head-tilting way of seeing the world. Dave Barry poured perspective on political conventions, kicked socialites off soapboxes, cajoled critics into colonoscopies, and even popularized International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Together with MAD Magazines and Calvin and Hobbes cartoons, Dave Barry columns gave me and millions of others a drink … in the dry zone. I was beyond nervous to fly down to Miami and meet up with Dave at Books&Books in Coral Gables, Florida where he shared a fresh dose of his head-tilting way of looking at the world as only he sees it. Please enjoy my conversation with screenwriter, novelist, performing musician, Pulitzer Prize winner, and New York Times bestselling author of over thirty books… Dave Barry. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How is comedy changing these days? What is the "cue card" approach to developing a story? What are some key guidelines for giving introductions or appearing on a TV show?  In Dave's view, who has the most unique voice in modern American comedy writing? How should every stand-up comedian end their performances? How do we balance ambition with contentment ... and feeling like you have “enough?” What’s the one thing anyone can do to improve their writing? Leave us a voicemail! His first scripted feature film The Road to Edmond will be released in late 2018. He lives in Orange county with his amazing wife Laura and their two great teenage kids. Find out more about him at his website: http://davidtrotter.tv   Show Notes 00:00: Opening “Just wanted to give you the 411 on my very first podcast. David Trotter and I went deep pretty fast, diving into spiritual philosophies and religious backgrounds. Even though this isn’t a religious podcast show, it will address spirituality and we’re definitely going to chat with people from many different belief systems. It was a great conversation where our topics ranged from his conservative Christian background, to doing a film on LGBTQ subject matter, and then, we lightened it up for a bit before we dove into the topic of gun control. I think it was a really great first show and I’m so glad to share this deep dive with you. Ready? Here we go…” Stacey   1:24 Introduction/ Intentions of Podcast “This show is based on my book An Unconventional Life: Where Messes and Magic Collide. It’s a collection of 21 chapters of the unique ways we’ve lived and traveled, and the crazy things we’ve done, to the wisdoms we’ve found in the mundane. Where we’ve crashed and burned hard and the creative ways we’ve risen from the ashes This show is all about talking with extraordinary souls who look at life through a different lens. Influencers and shapeshifters. People who not only see things differently but say it through their art of living. My heart in this is that when we hear from people who look at life differently it adds to our vocabulary, our toolbox, our options, on how we can see things, say things, do things, and live our lives.” Stacey   4:15 -  Introduction to David Trotter “Filmmaker, author and marketing strategist who is passionate about telling inspiring stories and creating resources that motivate people to take positive action. He’s an award winning filmmaker who has produced and directed three feature length documentaries including Mother India, In Plain Sight, and  Set Free Posse. His first scripted feature film The Road to Edmond will be released in late 2018. He lives in Orange county with his amazing wife Laura and their two great teenage kids.” Stacey   6:00 Dave’s Recollection of meeting Stacey   8:34 - When people ask you what do you do? In Dave’s own words.   13:37 - The spiritual conversation. Dave’s journey. “I started sensing a calling into ministry and became a pastor in full time ministry for over 10 years.” Dave   15:38 The biggest issue for me. Homosexuality. “How I felt at the time was that anything different than a marriage between a man and a woman is less than God's best, which is what I would articulate. My heart would sink. I knew the relationship would be cut off and there would be no further dialogue.” Dave   16:00 A Radical Change “Being out of ministry for 10 years has given me the opportunity to have dialogue and conversation with people who are in same sex relationships, people wrestling with theological issues, spirituality and faith in general. As I had more space it allowed me to question things. As I have been exposed to other ways of seeing the bible, other ways of seeing God - it has allowed me to then take the step to say these are key issues, and I would love to create a film that asks those questions in a way that is humorous, pushes the envelope, and would ultimately cause some controversy that would result in conversation. This becomes The Road To Edmond.” Dave   19:30 - More thoughts on Christianity as a former pastor, and Dave’s progressive film The Road To Edmond   25:44 - Growing past the rewards “The point that you’re rewarded for a thought that you have is the point that it’s tempting to stop growing. When you have a life that’s supported by a certain philosophy, you’re sort of motivated to not grow past that thought. That's why I always admire people who are willing to say ‘gosh there was a reward here and I could have stopped at that point because I had a big audience or a bigger paycheck at that thought. A sense of community and acceptance at that thought. But I’m willing to let all of that go, I’m willing to risk all of that for this thing that’s inside of me that’s pulsing so strong, or the conflict inside me that’s so strong that I have to wrestle with even if it means my philosophy changes.” Stacey   30:00 - On God as Love “I reached a point where I was like you know what? I just want to love people. I don’t want to leave anybody out. I don’t want to spend my energy trying to save people when I really don’t see them as broken. I see all of us as made from a God of Love and Love made us so we are Love.” “The breakdown really isn’t that were broken and need to be fixed the breakdown for me is that we are incredible and we get spiritual amnesia about that. We are this beautiful light but sometimes we don’t recognize that within us.” Stacey   33:40 - Dave’s current journey - being in the middle. “The Road to Edmond is a spiritual act, it is a spiritual process, and a spiritual gift that I’m trying to give to the world. The heart that’s embedded in this film is a heart of genuine questioning that’s not meant to tear down but meant to create an environment of safety in the midst of the laughter.” Dave   34:58 - On asking questions and moving beyond to find your tribe “I think the hardest part for the people who are asking questions is the possible loss of community and firm ground.” Dave “I felt like I was coming out of the christian closet, and I’m coming out as a human. Who loves people, and loves God, and the price tag was community.” Stacey “The two biggest issues that are addressed in this film -  are the two big issues in our world today which are: LGBTQ and ultimately who’s in and who’s out in terms of Heaven and hell.” Dave   42:40 Dave’s favorite part of making a film   45:02 Getting through the grind + Coming back to ‘The Why’ + success strategies for time production + EA   48:12 -Entrepreneurial grit + External vs Internal motivation factors   54:20 External Internal Motivation test   57:29 - Dave’s favorite quote ‘The five P’s’ doing the work in your life to live ready   1:00:20 - On Preparation “You can’t cram for stressful moments. What happens when you’re in a stressful moment, or a tragedy or a hard time is you live the readiness you have.” Stacey   1:00:56 Tapping the humanitarian in Dave: his two hot button issue and what we can do to move the world forward in a healing way.   1:03:45 - Stance on Gun control and boundaries in crossing lines   1:08:27 - Wisdom we can glean from recognizing there are no guarantees that we have the day, learning to embrace the moment “I can either live in fear or I can have richness that says wow isn’t this life great...  There is a richness that comes with the mortality and a wisdom - and wanting to take care of issues like violence, but at the same time knowing that it’s an illusion if I think I can control all of that..” Dave 1:11:48 The Concept of living The Unconventional Life “ There is something so powerful when I came to the conclusion that I could do whatever I wanted in life. And you remind me that on a daily basis. I can go where I want to go. I can do whatever kind of work I want to do.” Dave “Some people would say the reason I can do this is because of my own privilege. Because of the education that I’ve had, the color of my skin, the country that I live in. Some people don’t have this same freedom. But I think that so many of us live with cultural restraints that we just assume hold us back. You can live however you want to live, and that’s the beauty of an Unconventional Life.” Dave   “You can find a way to make a living You can raise kids in all kinds of different ways You can travel in different ways You can create different things   I can create a book I can create a film I can create a website ANYBODY can” Dave   1:15:52 The ‘right’ way to live VS. living in Possibility “Part of what came from my religious construct were two messages that were in opposition to each other. One was that there’s one right way to live and believe. The other one is that anything is possible. You know, I don’t know how good my aim is at hitting the center of that target every day in every thought in every way. So when my brain opened up to: there are so many great ways to be a wife, so many great ways to be a mom to, teach your kids,  to still have our own spirituality that makes you a peaceful happy person, when I realized that… I think this lives inside of us, you know, in that same way the whole oak tree lives inside of the acorn- everything it needs lives inside of that except for the environment it’s going to grow in and the elements. That was inside of me. That’s inside of you. I believe that’s inside of everybody. To find their way to live their happiest, healthiest, most peaceful life. I believe that.” Stacey   1:17:37 Thoughts on Humanism “It’s about taking the healthiest parts of your psychology and anything that’s possible and you’re building your life on that.” Stacey   1:18:25 What discerning God’s will looks like for me “One of the biggest problems I found in conservative Christianity is: What is God’s will for my life?” Dave   1:20:57 - Closing/ Where to find Dave Website: davidtrotter.tv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dtrotteryou Twitter: jdavidtrotter Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jdavidtrotter Instagram: jdavidtrotter   (Music: www.bensound.com)

Dave Rendall is an entrepreneur who has worn many hats during his professional career, which started when he was very young. All told, he has delivered newspapers, been a stock boy, lawn boy, caddie, painter, janitor, tutor, resident assistant, job coach, supervisor, nonprofit manager, and senior executive. Just to spice things up, he also has experience as a leadership professor, stand-up comedian, and endurance athlete. Drawing from this vast array of experience, Dave’s contribution to Paper Napkin Wisdom is rooted in reality: “What makes us weird, makes us wonderful. What makes us weak, also makes us strong.”   The common social reaction to uniqueness is one that nearly every teenage kid experiences at least once: rejection. Weirdness has a negative connotation; the word “unusual” is usually meant as a criticism. The resistance once receives for being weird is a push to be more conventional; to fit in. Robert Quinn once observed: “Deviants will always generate external pressures to conform when you perform beyond the norms, the systems will adjust and try to make you normal.”   It has been Dave’s experience, however, that the things that make you weird will also make you successful and remarkable. Those who are perceived to be weak may actually be quite strong. This perspective comes from Dave’s time working with people with disabilities (and specifically, helping them find employment). While it was common for others to focus on someone’s perceived disability, Dave explains that it takes a true genius to identify what’s working and what’s effective.   Dyslexia is a condition that provides a perfect example in the world of entrepreneurship. One study revealed that more than 50% of British millionaires were dyslexic, while another showed that at least 33% of entrepreneurs in the U.S. also have the condition. One person who fits into both categories is Richard Branson, who claims that his dyslexia has helped him to succeed. The logical conclusion: people with the condition don’t have weak or broken brains, they just have different brains. Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinkos, would likely agree; his dyslexia drove him to stay out of the office, improve his management style, and grow his business. Upon selling to FedEx for $2.4B, he claimed that not only would he not want to remove his condition, he wishes everyone could have it.   As with most entrepreneurial endeavors, there is a powerful analogy that comes from the sports world. Matt Stutzman is a competitive archer who won the silver medal at the Paralympic Games, all without arms. Matt says that he developed this incredible skill as a result of his disability by fine-tuning his core muscles and legs to the point of athletic superiority. He is even now facing legal action from those who claim that his condition gives him an “unfair advantage.” So perhaps the question you can ask yourself is: if someone without arms can be seen as having an “unfair advantage”, then is the weakness you face as an entrepreneur or as a leader really as strong as you think?   In Dave’s experience, there is always someone that is “weird” the same way you are, who would not see you as weird, but as wonderful. It’s about finding the right fit and the best situations where your perceived weirdness works for you. Dave is a 6’6” man, so he already stands out - yet he regularly wears pink shoes and pink pants as an homage to his three daughters. A side effect to this is that it helps him stand out even more (i.e. be more memorable) - for a professional speaker in a crowded marketplace, this becomes a clear advantage.     In a business sense, to be different requires doing things that are weird and unusual, but most businesses measure themselves against competition standards or parameters. Everyone measures success in the same way. True success, however, lives in having the courage to be weird and think differently in order to separate yourself and define success in a unique way. If you’re able to differentiate yourself into true uniqueness, then there is no competition.

Every musician wants to get more gigs, book better venues and be able to perform regularly. Performing for some artists is one of the main methods for profiting from the business of being a musician. However, getting gigs is getting harder and harder. Fortunately for all of us, there's Dave Ruch.Dave Ruch Is Great At Getting Paid GetsDave is a seasoned musician with a history of performing and creating new opportunities to perform. One thing that sets him a part from most musicians, is the types of gigs he gets. Instead of competing with every cover band in the coffee shop/bar-type venue, he's found a truly uncommon method of getting PAID gigs.Yeah, you read that right. One of the best places for musicians to get in front of a captivated (and paying) audience is to go to places that thrive on educational opportunities.Schools and libraries are two of the best places where both education and supportive audiences await you.If only you know how to book at their locations. How To Book Gigs That Give You More Time With Friends & FamilyThat's the specialty of Dave Ruch's blog, a thorough resource for musicians of all walks to find ways to perform in places that keep you active in the daytime so that you can spend time with your family or friends in the evening. How many of you have families (spouse and kids or grand kids) that you don't see as much because you're always on the road or playing late night gigs?Dave's method of performing allows him to work during the daytime and be home in the evenings/nights with his wife and kids.Even if you're in your 20s or 30s and haven't settled down with a family, the rewarding nature of being a part of children and youth's future by providing an educational and entertaining presentation during their school day is a great opportunity.Helping others is the mark of truly influential and powerful people. In these ways, Dave shows us how to get better at helping others through booking a different kind of gig.Make The Most Of Your OpportunitiesDave says, "Most public libraries have missions of entertain and educate audiences." This is a natural fit for a musician to make new connections. As a musician and creative entrepreneur, your main job is to build relationships with people and give them something powerful to experience. This method of booking a different kind of venue opens up new ways for you to grow.  It gives another avenue to take the method of The DIY Musician's Radio Handbook and apply them to a new group of people to create success opportunities for you.In a way similar to the past several DIY Artist Route guests (like Jeremy Young, Chandler Coyle, & Andrew Apanov) education in this music space is much more than a classroom experience. We all learn from each other.Sometimes we have opportunities to take our art into new places to positively change the lives of others. In Dave's method, you can get paid to do that too.Quotes To Key In On"What happens in the present is more important than being known in the end." -Dave Ruch“We’re all looking for hard, fast wins in the digital world. "In our fast-paced, success-obsessed culture, we’re constantly tempted to chase after things that don’t matter. We’ve been conditioned to value possessions over people, status over relationships, and ourselves over God. But the reality is this: God created love to be the centerpiece of our lives. In The Seven Laws of Love, Dave Willis makes the case for a love revival and proves that in returning to a life of love we have no greater model than the one who is love himself. In Dave’s humorous, touching, down-to-earth style, The Seven Laws of Love takes you on a journey through the ins and outs of everyday relationships—with your spouse, your children, your friends, and your coworkers—using practical, applicable examples and guiding principles that demonstrate what a life of love actually looks like. There is no higher calling on earth than to love and be loved. It’s time to learn The Seven Laws of Love, and to make loving a priority over all other pursuits. Anything else isn’t really living."
