What does it mean to have true joy—even when life is hard? In this episode of Passage Unlocked, Jim Murrell walks us through Galatians 5:22–23 and explores the supernatural strength found in the fruit of the Spirit called joy. This isn't just surface-level happiness—this is joy that survives trials, shines through persecution, and anchors the soul in Christ.
In this episode, I'm recording live (well, not quite live, but you get it) from Guatemala after an incredible one-week retreat at Lake Atitlán. But here's the thing—retreats aren't just about escaping reality, they're about amplifying it. Too often, we think of retreats as a way to run from life's chaos. But what if a retreat could expand your life instead of just giving you a break from it?I break down a new way to think about retreats—not as a withdrawal, but as a chance to re-treat yourself. Whether it's a day-long reset, a weekend escape, or a full immersive retreat, the real magic happens when you bring something back into your daily life.Key Takeaways:✔️ Reframe Your Retreats: Instead of escaping, see them as an opportunity to refuel and expand.✔️ Life is Already a Treat: When you see your daily life as something special, retreats become a way to add more flavor, not run away.✔️ Small Shifts = Big Change: Even 1% improvements from a retreat can compound into massive life transformation over time.✔️ Reconnect with Joy: What experiences light you up? Whether it's dancing, swimming, or connecting with nature—bring more of that into your daily routine.✔️ Practical Travel Tips: Insights from my Guatemalan retreat experience, including why the world is safer than the news tells you and why you should travel with an open mind.Reflect & Engage:What's one way you can bring more of a retreat mindset into your daily life? Homily given by Fr Cam on Sunday 11 December 2022. Claim the Joy - What does your hope for Jesus' coming look like? Is there a specific grace that you are desiring in your life at this time, or a particular vision of heaven that captures your heart? - Which of these signs of God's movement can you recognise in your life, either now or in the past? Are there other signs in your life that show you how God is present and working? - How can you express the joy of Jesus' coming, or live it out in your life? This week we look at JOy--What it is, What it is not, and the Wonderful Gift Joy is.
On this episode we talk about JOY - What is it? Where do we get it? What is it rooted in? How can we pursue it?
Jim Carrey famously commented, "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer." Even self-help gurus are moving away from the idea of pursuing "happiness", talking instead about meaning or fulfillment. Listen in on today's Strong By Design podcast as Mike Westerdal and Chris Wilson discuss this endless pursuit of happiness in a material world filled with distraction, anxiety and depression with Bob Brubaker and John Trebino from the PowerBreak podcast. Lyn talks with Jenny Schmal about how anyone can find the love of their life whatever their age. There is no age restriction in finding love, it’s always about your values and mindset because what you think and focus on will determine what potential partners come into your life. Understand who you are and what values are important to you before you embark on attracting a partner into your life. Shared values are a vital part of any successful relationship so you need to ask yourself - What do I really want in a man? When you change your thinking everything in your life will change and you will be able to attract the man you truely want, desire and deserve into your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS You can consciously choose to have a relationship at any age Focus on seven values that you would want in a man as a romantic partner. You should consider availability, health and whether a prospective partner is financially stable. Shared values are a vital part of any successful relationship. In today’s world, you have to be more creative and be very clear about what you want. Look at what makes you tick and what you want to find so that you can find someone who complements you. Women are very resilient and very loving human beings. It’s important to find time for self-love so that you do something just for you. It's better to understand who you are first before inviting someone into your life as a partner. The only thing blocking you is the belief that you have that you need to be 'more' than who you are, to attract the man that you want. What is going to bring passion and vibrance into your life right now? BEST MOMENTS ‘Women can think that love has passed them by but that’s not true’ ‘It’s about choosing the Prince instead of just accepting the frogs that come along’ ‘A relationship is a business between two people’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher ABOUT THE GUEST Jenny Schmal - Coach & Author of "Rejener8 - 8 Steps to Joy" What is blocking your Joy? It is in the moments when we feel we are ‘nothing’, that we can rebirth, recall, rebuild, reframe, redefine, reshape and Rejener8… we have the ability to grow strong again and rejoice – this is an expression of Self-Love … This is how Jenny describes her work: “A Fast-Track Reset Process - to address the cause of the separation from who you are. You are not broken and you don’t need to be fixed. You are perfect, but somewhere at some time, you have taken on some beliefs that you have to change or improve in order to achieve whatever you desire in life. We don’t work to change you, we work to change the beliefs. Each belief you have assumed has taken you further from loving yourself, and therefore, further from what you want to achieve. The road back to self-love is fast; that’s why I call it Reset Coaching. Why resign yourself to months of painfully slow change, when you already know the route back to you? This episode is captivating, mesmerizing, and filled with hope for anyone who has been told what they can't do. As just fifteen years old, Joy flew off a cliff on a motorbike and was declared dead on an operating table. Nine later she was hit by a drunk driver and suffered both internal and external injuries. She was told by doctors that her leg needed to be amputated and that she wouldn't live past 30 years of age. At the time of recording this conversation on December 28th, 2020, Joy was twice the age she was told she'd live to, 60 years old. And by the way, not only did she keep her leg, but she became a medal winning ballroom and Latin dancer. Joy lives by the words “incurable only means curable from within” and claims that her perspective is her superpower. She is a published author certified in over a dozen healing modalities. Joy now teaches others to “reprogram their brains for optimal levels of productivity and JOY”. In 2016, Going Places founder, Katie Blomquist, was a first-grade teacher in a low-income elementary school. She had a 6-year student named Jawan who wanted a bike for his birthday and it shocked Katie to learn he had never owned one. She wished she could buy him a bike, but that wasn’t possible on a teacher’s salary. It was something that Katie couldn’t get off her mind knowing Jawan was growing up without the joy of riding his own bike.As Katie started to ask around her class, she realized that most of the kids had never owned a bike. Remembering her own childhood filled with joyful memories of riding her bike all around her neighborhood, she set out to change this sad realization. Katie had the idea to buy all 650 students in her school a brand new, high-quality bike by starting a GoFundMe campaign. With the help of Affordabike, a local Charleston custom bicycle shop, this idea became a reality.Katie’s campaign went viral and some of the top news outlets in the country reported on it including Good Morning America, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, ABC World News, Time Magazine, USA Today, Post and Courier, and The Steve Harvey Show. The story behind Going Places was catching on fire throughout America. On March 30, 2017, she surprised every student at Pepperhill Elementary School with a brand new bike. After this successful event, Katie now had an even greater vision. Her vision was to create a nonprofit whose mission was to bring Joy to children in need. To make that a reality, Katie would have to focus her efforts full time on this new venture, which meant stepping away from teaching. In June 2017, she got to work on building the dream of Going Places, which involved rallying the community around her cause. It was important to Katie that her supporters understood why there was a need for Joy in these children’s lives.Numerous organizations focus on providing the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter, yet one thing often overlooked for children is their social-emotional need for Joy. For many kids living in poverty, it is when they get home from school that the real stress begins. So why a bike? These kids can live in less-than-desirable and unpredictable circumstances and a bike provides them with a sense of freedom and escape. It also builds self-worth by being the first item of value they can call their own. A bike can restore the innocence of childhood that many have had taken away.A person may have all of the basic "needs" in life, but what kind of life is one without Joy? What kind of adult will a child grow up to be if they have lacked Joy?Going Places invites everyone in their community to join them on this ride of providing Joy to these children in need and letting them know that they deserve to go places in life. They're Going Places, Wanna Come?

Jenny Schmal is a relationship coach and author, specialising in working with people who want to find out exactly who they are, what they’re doing here, and how they can find the love of their life. Jenny joins Lyn this week to discuss the topic of finding the love of your life, and why that love might be a lot closer to home than you think. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we say “I love you” to someone, we are not really saying it to them, but to ourselves. We are admitting the fact that we are happy, at peace, in love with the moment and ourselves for bringing us this experience. When we have the awareness and are connected with our own sense of self-love, we remove all the filters and defences we build up throughout our lives. Jenny recommends this simple 'self-love' exercise - stand in front of a mirror and bow to yourself as a mark of respect. It is quite common for people to feel uncomfortable showing this level of honour and respect to themselves even though they will happily bow to others. The premise of self-love is that you are the navigator of your own destiny. It is recognising that your life is your own story. Self-love is self-elevation. Sometimes the issues that seem so important to us, the hang-ups we have about our bodies or self-worth, can evaporate in the wake of a transformation or life-altering experience / event. Imagine that you are observing planet Earth from the outside and are looking in. If you were going to visit the planet, what would you take there? Most people's answer is “Love”. What does this say about our society? BEST MOMENTS ‘A lot of people have lost themselves’ ‘You are the director and scriptwriter of your own life story’ ‘I choose to be my best self’ ’They’re looking outward and not inward’ ‘I’m more of a laser-focused coach' VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Jenny Schmal - Coach & Author of "Rejener8 - 8 Steps to Joy" What is blocking your Joy? Count it all Joy! A command in scripture that is often misunderstood. No, the burden is not on us to summon up joy. Praise God, that's Jesus' job! Our role is to introduce our trials to Jesus. Bring them before Him in dialogue. Journey with me today as I discuss how Jesus modeled this for us and how we can effectively "Count it all joy."Scriptures mentioned: Hebrews 12:2 ESV"Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." James [Jacob] 1:2-4 ESVCount it all joy, my brethren when you meet trials of various kindsJames [Jacob] 1:12 ESV"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."Nehemiah 8:10 ESV"... for the Joy of the Lord is your strength."John 10:4-5 NASBWhen he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”Practical Conversation with God Tips: Switching from a monologue to a dialogue in our time with Him. Get quiet. Settle into whatever space your in. Begin to acknowledge that Jesus is with you there, even if you don't feel His presence. Think about His character. What about Him brings you delight? From that place, start by asking Jesus this first question, you can ask it out loud or silently in your head, but it'll help you begin to locate where you hear His voice within. Ask, "Jesus, Am I a child of God?" Now, wait. Listen to where you hear the answer. You may notice that the thought that comes to you in response to that question is different from the thought that comes to you if asked a question like, what's your favorite ice cream flavor? It's because "The Spirit himself, testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." Romans 8:16 NIVRomans 8:16 TPT, "For the Holy Spirit makes God's fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, "You are God's beloved child!"Continuing The Conversation: Jesus, who am I full of Joy? What do I look like?Jesus, how do I return to that place of joy, that expression of joy you've created me for?Jesus, When do I feel most joyful?Jesus, is there a particular emotion, thought, or situation from which I have difficulty returning to joy? What would help me?Jesus, what do you want to communicate from your heart to mines?Jesus, what situation in my life could use your encouragement?Enjoy the conversation with Jesus! It’s easy to feel the tension of our culture when it comes to sharing Jesus with our neighbors. Often we resolve the tension by convincing ourselves that our love, resulting in action, says enough. But, what if it isn’t? What if love for our neighbors actually demands that we tell them of the beauty we have found in the person of Jesus? That our neighbors aren’t truly loved by Jesus followers unless Jesus is “heard” as the only reliable hope for Joy? What would embolden us to share this good news?
When something is described as great, the meaning is amplified. Like this: I have a wife. vs. I have a great wife. 2 of my daughters have husbands. vs. 2 of my daughters have great husbands. Adding ‘great’ is a game changer. It gives Focus. Clarity. Value. Understanding. It changes the story. Great defined: Greek / Megas - great, large, vast, big, high, tall; mighty, important Reveals: great mass and weightMakes it: large, spacious Adds: measure and height and lengthGives: statureLarge in: number and quantity: numerous, large, abundantCreates: intensity and increased degree: violent, mighty, strong In scientific language - Mega: times 1 million - megaton, megawatt, megahit Luke 2:8-12 8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. The word suggests the thought of the Shechinah, or cloud of intolerable brightness, which was the token of the divine presence in the Tabernacle and the Temple. Never before had there been such a manifestation to such men as these. What had been the privilege of patriarchs and priests was now granted to shepherds, and the first proclamation of the glad tidings was to these shepherds. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” And suddenly there was with the angel,....That brought the tidings of Christ's birth to the shepherds: a multitude of the heavenly host: who being caused to fly swiftly, were at once with him, by his side, and about him; and which was a further confirmation of thetruth of his message to them: these were angels who were called an host, or army, the militia of heaven, the ministers of God, that wait upon him, and do his pleasure; and are sent forth to minister to his people, and encamp about them, preserve, and defend them; 15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. 1. On this day, Great Joy Came. Great Joy Came by, with & through Jesus. Luke 2:10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. Joy - What comes to mind? Jesus, The word of God, The Spirit of God, the Mercy of God, the Love of God, the Grace of God, My wife, My children, My family in heaven and on earth, His church. Strength. Heaven. Family & Friends who have surrendered to the Love & Grace of God. 3 John 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. This is so true. Joy defined: joy, gladness, cheerfulness - the joy received from you; the cause or occasion of joy - of persons who are one's joy Joy is a state of mind and an orientation of the heart. It is a settled state of contentment, strength, confidence and hope in/from Him. It is something or someone tha
