Mary Kaldor, a retired professor at LSE, has been one of the leading peace researchers and activists in the world since founding the Helsinki Citizens Assembly at the end of the Cold War. She is on th UN Commission on Disarmament now and is writing a book about the world order. She gives Metta a peek at this big work and together they speculate about the kind of institutional lgoal changes that are coming. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Growth theory for EAs - reading list and summary, published by Karthik Tadepalli on September 12, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Economic growth is a unique field, because it is relevant to both the global development side of EA and the AI side of EA. Global development policy can be informed by models that offer helpful diagnostics into the drivers of growth, while growth models can also inform us about how AI progress will affect society. My friend asked me to create a growth theory reading list for an average EA who is interested in applying growth theory to EA concerns. This is my list. (It's shorter and more balanced between AI/GHD than this list) I hope it helps anyone who wants to dig into growth questions themselves. These papers require a fair amount of mathematical maturity. If you don't feel confident about your math, I encourage you to start with Jones 2016 to get a really strong grounding in the facts of growth, with some explanations in words for how growth economists think about fitting them into theories. Basics of growth These two papers cover the foundations of growth theory. They aren't strictly essential for understanding the other papers, but they're helpful and likely where you should start if you have no background in growth. Jones 2016 Sociologically, growth theory is all about finding facts that beg to be explained. For half a century, growth theory was almost singularly oriented around explaining the "Kaldor facts" of growth. These facts organize what theories are entertained, even though they cannot actually validate a theory - after all, a totally incorrect theory could arrive at the right answer by chance. In this way, growth theorists are engaged in detective work; they try to piece together the stories that make sense given the facts, making leaps when they have to. This places the facts of growth squarely in the center of theorizing, and Jones 2016 is the most comprehensive treatment of those facts, with accessible descriptions of how growth models try to represent those facts. You will notice that I recommend more than a few papers by Chad Jones in this list. That's because he is by far the best writer in the growth literature. His exposition of complex ideas and coverage of the big picture is just not matched by any other growth economist. Jones 2005 While Jones 2016 focuses on the facts of growth, Jones 2005 is an overview of the most common kind of long-run growth model - the idea-based model. Historically, economists used models like the Solow model, in which growth came from accumulating capital. But capital-based models are basically incapable of predicting sustained long-run growth. The now-canonical Romer model made a breakthrough by refocusing growth on ideas. Unlike machines, ideas are infinitely reusable. So if growth comes from creating new ideas, and ideas don't get used up, we can generate sustained long-run growth. This is another demonstration of the aesthetic of growth theory: theories are celebrated if they can match facts that economists think are important. The idea-based growth model is way too canonical to leave off this list. But I personally think it is overrated by EAs and not necessarily applicable to the issues we care about (AI or global development). I include it because working through it will help you understand the mechanics of growth models more generally, including the more complicated ones covered below. Growth theory for AI progress The growth theory that focuses on AI progress builds off the canonical growth work listed above, but with important advances from it. Few papers really apply their framework directly to AI, so it's important to try and extrapolate what the model implies about AI. The three papers below are the ones whose frameworks I think are most applicable to thinking about AI ...

Diversional therapist Lauretta Kaldor is true pioneer in her field, and has a wealth of wisdom and knowledge to share. Starting out as a school teacher in the 1950s at the age of 19, her journey towards diversional therapy began later in life when she was teaching arts and crafts to older people. When asked to run her classes in a residential care facility, Lauretta discovered a true passion for working with elders and has never looked back. She realised early that it was very important to adapt the activities to suit – the challenge was to produce activities that were adult and not childish, but could be completed and enjoyed by older people with varying abilities. With no resources available at the time to guide her, Lauretta was forced to discover herself which activities to do, through a process of trial and error. She started documented everything she was doing, and spent time reflecting on what worked and what didn't. These notes were not only useful to show management what the class was working on, they also formed the basis of her first book in 1984. Since then she has achieved formal qualifications in Leisure and Health (while in her 60s) and Dementia (in her 80s) and has written many more books for leisure staff working in aged care containing ideas on craft, reminiscing programs and games. During her group work and time spent one-on-one with residents, Lauretta found that the benefits lie not only in the activity itself, but also in the relationship you build with people. When the connection is there, the residents know what to expect, and look forward to the sessions as they know they will be doing something enjoyable. Through targeted activities, Lauretta finds art and crafts a powerful way to share stories and reminisce, especially when combined with a teaching aid that will spark memories and help people remember. She also emphasises the importance of understanding a person's social history, as without this knowledge you may unintentionally trigger a trauma. Today, Lauretta remains as passionate and hungry for knowledge as ever, and encourages her colleagues to listen to podcasts and attend every course possible to continue to learn more. She believes you can never ‘overlearn', especially when it comes to the workings of the brain, where revision will only deepen your understanding of mental health and dementia. She finished our interview with some sound advice: enjoy what you are doing. Because if you enjoy it you are more than likely going to be successful. In this episode you will learn: Valuable tips, strategies and insights for creating leisure programs The importance of planning, documenting and revising what you do Why ongoing learning is critical at every stage of your career How to build a connection and relationship through leisure programs Why you need to understand a person's social history before you begin Resources: Visit Lauretta Kaldor's website for free ideas and resources: http://laurettakaldor.com.au/
It was a scientific discovery that changed the world forever. The nuclear bomb was largely a brainchild of left wing scientists who were determined Nazi Germany would not win the race to build this terrible weapon. The recent Hollywood biopic focuses on the role of Robert Oppenheimer in this fascinating period in history, the man who led the team working under the direction of the American government in this top secret project, who would become a prominent victim of the McCarthyite purges in the 1950s. In this podcast, Luke Cooper and Zoe Williams talk to LSE professor and Another Europe Is Possible member, Mary Kaldor, about this fascinating history. While she never met Oppenheimer himself, Kaldor met a number of other figures in the film and others that didn't make it into the script, particularly at the Pugwash conferences on disarmament that created a unique space for dialogue between scientists on either side of the Cold War divide.

Contemporary stages have often become places to exhibit one's own injuries, traumas, or shame. Theater as a safer space – in the spirit of a concept that emerged in the USA in the 1960s in feminist and civil rights movements: A protected sphere in which one could communicate about one's own experiences, goals, and strategies without already being confronted with permanent opposition from those who already dominate all discourses. But as important as protection against insult, injury, and re-traumatization is – doesn't theater also have to be a space where there are no limits to freedom of expression, where everything can be discussed openly and radically? Perhaps, however, this oft-repeated juxtaposition is already following the wrong path.

GLOSSARYWhat was the Helsinki Accords (Agreement)? (00:5:20 or p.2 in the transcript)Helsinki Accords, also called Helsinki Final Act (August 1, 1975), major diplomatic agreement signed in the capital Of Finland, Helsinki, at the conclusion of the first Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE; now called the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe). The Helsinki Accords were primarily an effort to reduce tension between the Soviet and Western blocs by securing their common acceptance of the post-World War II status quo in Europe. The accords were signed by all the countries of Europe (except Albania, which became a signatory in September 1991) and by the United States and Canada. The agreement recognized the inviolability of the post-World War II frontiers in Europe and pledged the 35 signatory nations to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to cooperate in economic, scientific, humanitarian, and other areas. The Helsinki Accords are nonbinding and do not have treaty status. Source: What is the theory of nuclear deterrence? (00:21:42 or p.5 in the transcript) The strategic concept of nuclear deterrence aims to prevent war. It is the justification virtually every nuclear state uses for maintaining nuclear arsenals. The concept of nuclear deterrence follows the rationale of the ‘first user' principle. States reserve the right to use nuclear weapons in self-defence against an armed attack threatening their vital security interests. Possession of nuclear weapons could be seen as the ultimate bargaining tool in international diplomacy, instantly giving any nuclear state a seat at the top table. The possession of nuclear weapons is repeatedly attacked on the grounds of morality, national credibility, legality, and cost. Nonetheless, proponents of deterrence theory generally draw on one primary argument: its efficacy as a war-prevention mechanism. A notable author in the field, Kenneth Waltz, argues that nuclear deterrence bolsters state security by alleviating the prospect of direct attack, essentially ensuring peace through fear of retaliation. It is argued that the nuclear deterrence developed between the USA and the USSR – the belief that any nuclear attack would lead to massive nuclear retaliation and ‘mutually assured destruction' – avoided nuclear war and maintained the temperature between the 1950s and 1990s. The continued nuclear deterrence prevented war between the USA and USSR, and has maintained the West's longest ever period of peace, in the years that followed. It has been noted that no direct conflict has ever broken out between two nuclear-armed states. On these grounds, a small number of proponents maintain that the possession of nuclear proliferation should not be limited to a select few, ‘superior' states. At present, countries possessing a nuclear deterrent are thought to exert an unfair advantage on the global stage, leaving vulnerable countries relatively unprepared (and reliant on nuclear states) in the event of an attack. Since the end of the Cold War, however, the nature of the nuclear threat has changed dramatically. The greatest nuclear fear today is that nuclear weapons find their way into the hands of terrorists or ‘rogue states', either through autonomous programs of development, or technology passed on. Policy of deterrence is considered useless against terrorists and is less useful against ‘rogue states' such as Iran and North Korea, whose stability is questioned, and whose motivations are less easily understood. One of the biggest reasons I see clients fail to succeed when they commit to a plan is because of “people-pleasing” eating. This episode features Christian Weight Loss and Life Coach, Amanda Kaldor. Amanda loves to be curious and explore the amazingness of God and all He's created. She left her position as a registered nurse to be of greater impact in supporting women in caring for their temples; mind, body, and soul. Now, Amanda coaches women to reclaim their self-control around food so they live life to the full with confidence and joy. What is “people-pleasing eating”? Why do we do it? - eating food not because we are physically hungry but because we want another person to feel a certain way - we do it actually not to make the other person feel that way (out of our control) but so that we can feel a certain way What are the solutions? -Self-confidence -Knowing what you can and can't control -Giving the gift of kind/honesty Connect with Amanda on her website (www.amandakaldor.com) or on her YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSiUNkgbHxO64elHEEW3tnQ/featured) Have podcast topic suggestions? Technology is changing at an advanced rate - the robots are evolving, artificial intelligence is adapting, and with these changes so politics is altering too. Dangerously. Can Liv and Tula make a difference during the most turbulent time in the world's history? 5.1 The Enhancement by Aaron Douglas The Enhancement chips are the next stage of personal security for the citizens of Kaldor - and following her experiences with identity theft, no-one is keener to get involved with them than Tula. Liv, however, has other concerns. The Sons of Kaldor have been suspiciously quiet. But is this something to be worried about? In the new age of counter-insurgency, civil conflict and proxy wars, Russia's invasion of Ukraine stands out as a rare modern example of so-called ‘“conventional'” warfare fought between the armed forces of two nation-states. In this podcast, New Lines' Lydia Wilson talks to Mary Kaldor, author of the pioneering 1999 book ‘“New and Old Wars,”', to discuss what Russia's goals are, why the invasion is a departure from their usual strategy — and whether Putin has miscalculated. Produced by Joshua Martin

In this episode of ‘The Bigger Picture' series, Anastasia Kapetas speaks to Professor Mary Kaldor about the concept of human security and how it evolved. They consider whether the lessons being learned from recent events in Afghanistan are the right ones, what a human security approach to terrorism looks like and the need to strengthen democracies in the context of rising authoritarianism. Since successfully bringing Christo's Wrapped Coast to Australia, John Kaldor has become one of the country's most significant collectors and private patrons. Where to next, and who is he excited by now?
He was born on the first day of the Great Depression, did competitive ski racing in Europe, and went to spy school to become a special agent. But a passion for writing led Eric Kaldor to Hollywood, and he has many stories to tell about his journey! After spending some time as a sports producer, Eric Kaldor landed his first TV writing gig. He then went on to write for some of the most well known hits of the 1970s: Emergency, Kojak, The Rockford Files, and The Incredible Hulk. You'll love hearing about how TV writing worked in the 1970s, and how much it differs from the group writing of today. Also, Eric is full of amusing anecdotes about his path to and through Hollywood. After 1980, Eric left TV writing to raise his family and build a successful family business with his wife. He started acting, and has had parts in films, like 2006's Hollywoodland, and many recent shows, including ER and House. Eric never stopped writing … he is currently working on a novel, and publishing it a chapter at a time on his website at erickaldor.com.
