In today's episode, we will be continuing our series on Shakespeare's Language Framework and our Shakespeare's Sources by taking a closer look at Petrarch. First, we will dive into the biography of Francesco Petrarca, more commonly known as Petrarch in English, the 14th century poet who had a huge influence on European humanism, the Renaissance, and poetry. Then, we will explore Petrarch's influence and how it spread across Europe before covering how we can see his influence in the works of William Shakespeare.  Shakespeare Anyone? is created and produced by Kourtney Smith and Elyse Sharp. He feels Milei could be the most consequential politician economically-speaking for many years. He also looks at falling EV car sales, lamenting the way in which politicians set goals for achieving their hobbyhorses irrespective of scientific progress and consumer demand. And he is fascinated by a meeting between journalist John Humphreys and members of Gen Z, which showed them to be different to the popular perception. Learn more about your ad choices. Libertarian vs Indigenous Ways: Which is the better model for society?

Principle of Charity

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 55:34

In this episode we contrast two very different ways of seeing the world — Libertarianism and Indigenous Ways, to consider which model is better for society. Libertarianism, with a focus on the version of this political philosophy that came about in the second half of the 20th century, usually associated with the centre right, does in fact cut across traditional left /right lines. It sees our individual liberty, our freedom as the most important political value. It's a political philosophy that values civil liberties, competitive markets, private property and free speech. It sees the government as a poor substitute for voluntary community and dislikes government intervention. Not just because governments may be corrupt or inefficient, but because of the real threat of force that lies at the base of all laws to coerce us to do what we may not want to do. Libertarianism sits on the extreme, but still well within a general Western enlightenment worldview with other pillars like capitalism and free functioning markets. One could say that the purpose that sits behind this entire worldview is the flourishing of the individual. In contrast to libertarianism we consider Indigenous Australian knowledge systems, which echo many First Nations' ways of seeing the world. Here the individual is just one node in a hugely complex system of relationships that extend to the family, to community, to ancestors, to future generations, to animals and to the land — which is also seen to be alive and sentient — and to the creation stories themselves. While this system recognises we have individual desires and we should honour our individuality, it is driven by prioritising our relationships and obligations to all those groups mentioned above with an overarching sense of custodianship for a story that started in creation and will continue long after we are gone. There are some interesting crossovers between the two worldviews, such as a distrust of centralised top-down systems of control and a belief in the power of emergent systems that come from the web of human interactions, however these are two very different ways of seeing the role of the individual and their relationships and responsibilities in and to society. This episode contains some coarse language.BIOSTyson Yunkaporta is an Aboriginal scholar, founder of the Indigenous Knowledge Systems Lab at Deakin University in Melbourne, and author of Sand Talk. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with the Helium Boys Podcast to react to USC's defensive improvements in a 66-14 victory over Nevada that moves the Trojans to 2-0 on the season. The Helium Boys discuss the notable takeaways from the blowout win and why what we've seen in the first two games should still be taken with a bit of skepticism and a grain of salt. Shotgun and Chris introduce a new 'biggest takeaway' segment called the 'Two-Minute Drill' and then break down the victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including a number of offensive players that contributed to an eight-touchdown outing as well as the defense that produced a touchdown of its own. The boys also take a look at the bigger themes that took a step towards being developed in the opener and what has to be cleaned up in Pac-12 play, which starts this weekend for the Trojans when they take on their oldest 'rival,' Stanford. The Helium Boys also preview this week's matchup against the Cardinal, who the Trojans could be playing for the last time in the foreseeable future thanks to conference realignment with USC moving to the Big Ten next July and Stanford recently having announced it is heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with California and SMU. This Cardinal team won't resemble the Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw teams that focused on pounding opponents with a downhill, old-school rushing attack and big-bodied wide receivers and tight ends, but Stanford still does have some of those weapons with 6-foot-5 receiver John Humphreys and dynamic 6-foot-4 tight end Benjamin Yurosek. A podcast of the people, the Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions about a number of topics spanning from the defending elite tight ends to the future impact of freshman pass rushers Braylan Shelby and Elijah Hughes as well as discussing the insane workload Colorado's Travis Hunter had in the Buffaloes' upset of TCU. Finally, the podcast concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some "Take It or Leave It" prompts both from the Trojans' win over the Wolf Pack, including touchdown celebrations, as well as around college football in Week 1 with grilling and weather phenomena both featured. There is also the need for focused training, the honing of skills, an obsession with gear, great photos in inaccessible parts of the world and the discomfort of wet/dry drills before getting in or out of a sleeping bag.  We finish with Andy's book choice on Desert Island dits About Face by David Hackworth.  His film choice is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  The teams book choices this episode are Picking Up The Brass by Eddie Nugent and Serpico by Peter Maas. Yet as with any cultural phenomenon, there are those prime examples that rise to the top to become forever cemented into our collective consciousness. One such artifact is a 17-minute black-and-white film that became so iconic it is merely, and famously known only as "Alien Autopsy."  The film sequence purported to show government or military Medical Examiners performing an autopsy on an alien lifeform supposedly recovered along with debris from an equally famous event, the 1947 Roswell UFO crash.  One could argue that the film has become more well-known than the incident upon which it was supposedly based.  The first public screening of the film occurred on May 5, 1995, in a small theater at the Museum of London.  The organizer of the event who had possession of the film at the time, a music and television producer named Ray Santilli, had invited the Press, UFOlogists, and even clergy members to witness the extraordinary footage to generate buzz and controversy.  Accomplishing both aims, news outlets around the world picked up on the story.  But the biggest sensation sparked on August 28th of that year, when Fox Television aired a documentary Special featuring the footage titled, Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction.  The Special was re-broadcast two more times, with each one generating millions of more viewers.  The backstory Santilli stated then was that he purchased the footage from a retired military cameraman who shot the film during the actual autopsy at the Roswell Army Air Field.  However, just before the release of a 2006 British comedy called Alien Autopsy, which dramatized the story of the events surrounding the film, Santilli admitted that the film he and his partner Gary Shoefield released was a recreation of the original footage he acquired in 1992. He claims that in the time he first viewed the 22 original reels and the 1995 release, the film deteriorated so severely that his team needed to recreate the shots based on what he had seen.  But Santilli also insists that they spliced frames from the original footage into the film they released – that an authentic, 1947 autopsy film existed.  But that is his story, and as we all know, there are always more sides to one.  Enter tonight's guest, magician and media producer Spyros Melaris.  Spyros has a convincing story of his own, that he and his friend, sculptor and Special Effects artist John Humphreys created the film and everything seen in it – that there is no authentic autopsy film.  Whatever you may decide after hearing part one of our interview with Spyros, one thing is sure: the Alien Autopsy film captured the imagination of the world and might be one of the greatest hoaxes of all time.  Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode: https://www.astonishinglegends.com/2020/8/23/ep-186-alien-autopsy-part-1 (http://www.astonishinglegends.com/al-podcasts/2019/7/14/ep-149-dan-susan-micah-hanks-and-missing-time)

This week I spoke to Steve Bonham & The Long Road Country band but not the country as you know it, they are Vagabonds doing it their way.   A varied background with Kev playing with bands such as Saxon, Steve brings the lyrical expertise and Chris his musical training, but all too often they cast that aside to free flow with passion Bio Wide-brimmed hat. Long dark coat. Guitar slung on back. 31 years on the road. A hundred thousand miles and half a thousand hotel rooms. From the Berlin Wall to the Atlas Mountains, from the Sahara Desert to the streets of Hong Kong, from the Appalachian Mountains to the frozen lakes of Ontario: a memory brewed in the long simmering soup of people and place. A man who has learned to watch and to listen, to walk and talk in the ebb and flow of meeting and parting. He is a chronicler of the human spirit in words and music. His is an intimate creativity – drawn from the direct experience that comes from getting dirt on your boots; dust in your eye and sweat on your brow. Steve Bonham is a storyteller, a published author, an inveterate traveller, for decades a songwriter, performer and musician, and an award-winning psychologist. Born in Derbyshire, England, Steve studied psychology and philosophy at university. He has recorded more than 10 albums; two musicals; and several books including A Little Nostalgia for Freedom. He is the author of the Vagabond Philosopher blog. His latest project Gone to Look for America comprises the book A Beautiful Broken Dream and two albums: The Girl With The Rattlesnake Heart and Reliance written with his compadres in The Long Road: Kev Moore; Chris Lydon and John Humphreys. www.vagabondphilosopher.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_gc1HHPqQw   check us out   www.duggystoneradio.com     check out the previous interviews    thanks for checking this out   Kirk    please sub to the show

The Compassionate Leadership Interview
Nancy Fielder, doing the job she loves in the city she loves

The Compassionate Leadership Interview

Nancy Fielder is editor of The Star, Sheffield Telegraph and Doncaster Free Press. She is the first woman to edit a newspaper in Sheffield. If you check out her social media feeds, football, art and the built environment emerge as themes. Of these, it's the built environment she is most passionate about – “the city really needs to move forwards but has got a lot worth protecting.” She was nominated for the podcast by Dan Hayes, the Star's business reporter. Does she think of herself as a compassionate leader? She tries to bring the same attitudes and thoughts she has towards her friends and family into the workplace. She speculates that it's a sign of being compassionate that you acknowledge that you don't always succeed in being compassionate. The foundation of her practice as a leader is listening. She has strong ideas on what she wants, but equally recognises that the local journalism landscape is changing rapidly. Listening and openness help her and the paper to adapt. In February last year the BBC ran a piece on the demise of the local newspaper and in May this year the Guardian claimed that the decline of newspapers is “starving communities of news.” Is it fair to say that local newspapers are in decline? Nancy says that while print is in decline, online news is thriving – The Star's audience is as numerous now as it was when the print edition was at its peak. Staff numbers have declined but the remaining team is very tight knit and still manages to run some great stories. Bylines no longer have the kudos that they once have, but journalists can see the response of the public to a story in real time. Nancy doesn't single out one person who has inspired her on her leadership journey, but lots of different people have helped her and boosted her confidence “and they are not the sort of people who would recognise they have done that because it is everyday acts of kindness and words of encouragement.” Having children helps her keep a sense of perspective and has compelled her to compartmentalise her life. And the children wouldn't allow it any event. When Nancy last appeared on BBC Breakfast (21/9/19) one of the subjects raised was some of the comments John Humphreys has made since his retirement (about feeling frustrated as a journalist). Does Nancy have things that she wants to say but feels she can't right now? She has learnt to put across her point of view in a reasoned way and it generally receives a favourable reception. Nancy has her finger on the South Yorkshire pulse perhaps more so than anyone, even local politicians. What single change does she believe would achieve the greatest improvement in the lives of her readers? She would want to close the divides that exists within the region, while acknowledging that this is no easy task. She would want to spread the know-how behind the pockets of manufacturing and educational brilliance more widely. It would help for a start if people from all sides of the city would travel more widely. Nancy tries to use her position to reach out to younger women and encourage them. She organised a “Women in Sheffield” awards last year and is looking to organise a bigger event in the future. She observes “it doesn't take much from somebody else to make you question your lack of confidence.” Nancy works hard to listen to and understand diverse communities. She highlights that Facebook are funding local news reporters. The Star employs a Chinese and a Roma-Slovak reporter. They have helped the paper get stories across from a different angle. Nancy tries to promote independent thought among her readers. She sees the role of the press as informing people and encouraging them to vote, but not telling them how to vote.   She doesn't read much specifically on the subject of leadership. Her advice would be to listen and read as widely as you can. “Pick up things you normally wouldn't want to try and give...
