Shawn agrees with Nick that if the money for Simmons was too much this year, they won’t even be in the ballpark next year. Former Broncos linebacker Karl Mecklenburg joins the show to talk about playing hurt and using his brain to excel at the NFL level. Mecklenburg talks about preparation and anticipation as staples in the game as it evolves into a game of speed in 2020. Mecklenburg mentions why it was hard for Von Miller to get to the quarterback with so many double-teams and Bradley Chubb out, as well as Elway’s magic when the defense needed it. Shawn asks Nick about the Colorado Rockies waiving RPs Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee today and Nick has concerns about when the Rockies work their bullpen and no longer have McGee & Shaw around. Shawn says the Rockies are on the hook monetarily for these failures. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Incredibly honored and humbled to have NFL Legend Karl Mecklenburg on the Funky Brain Podcast with Dennis Berry. For those living in Colorado, and for really any real NFL fan, this is kind of a big deal. We all knew him as the gritty linebacker who helped the Denver Broncos achieve greatness in the 80's and 90's. We had a great discussion about his life during and post football. We really connected on a personal level and I was impressed with his wisdom and compassion. He has a powerful book that he is currently promoting: Heart of a Student Athlete - All-Pro advice for competitors and their families. Karl does a lot of Keynote Speaking to a variety of crowds, spreading powerful messages of growth and achievement. Karl Mecklenburg played in the NFL for 12 years and was all pro for half of those years. Not bad for a college walk-on who was the 310th draft pick in 1983. Put frankly, the guy was an over achiever. But what does a professional football player do when his career ends in his mid 30s? Karl joins me to discuss how he made the transition from football field to running his own business. He talks about the preparation we need to do now so we can perform when given the opportunity. Karl has brilliant insights about versatility and points out why none of us can rely on pure talent in a marketplace where everyone is talented. You’re going to like this talk!

He started playing football at a young age as well as other sports but his favourite sport growing up was actually hockey. He developed into very good goalie in hockey which helped him later on as a linebacker in football. He was not heavily recruited out of highschool so went to a small College, Augustana University, for 2 years. After putting up stellar numbers, he though a full scholarship would follow. However the school backed out, knowing his dad was a doctor and could afford to pay for his schooling. They pulled his scholarship thinking he would stay. Instead, he transfered to the University of Minnesota and walked on the team there. He had some legendary coaches on the staff there like Tony Dungy, Mike Martz and Mike Shanahan. His numbers for his Senior season were not phenomenal, however he showed enough to be selected by Denver in the 12th round. The coach, Dan Reeves, was a player that was viewed as an underdog so he looked for players like that who he knew could develop into a great player. Karl was a player that fit that mold. He was a dominant player, and the team used his versatility by playing him in multiple positions to take advantage of the weak spots on the offence. His physical play took a toll on his body having several surgeries during his career. Even though he went to school to follow in his dads footsteps and become a doctor, his path led him to a career in speaking. He does talks around North America using the lessons he learned playing football. He’s part of a mastermind group of speakers that help each other refine their keynotes and become better speakers. He also wrote a book, Heart of an Student Athlete: All-Pro Advice For Competitors an Their Families. Check out Karl’s website and social media links below for more information. For the anniversary of the 20th show, the guys welcome on Broncos legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist Karl Mecklenburg. The former 12 year NFL veteran played from 1983-1994 and amassed 79 career sacks for the Broncos. Ross and Nate get Mecklenburg's thoughts on the Hall of Fame honors, some stories from his playing days, what it would be like if players were still "policing" the game, his thoughts on the current Broncos team, and what he's up to now - his motivational speaking and thoughts on perhaps coaching in the NFL. The guys also talk Nuggets as Arron Afflalo was recently re-signed, plus the start of the NBA season is just five days away - six days for Nuggets Nation. Nate and Ross answer a few questions from Denver Stiffs readers about the team and express their expectations for the upcoming season. The Broncos vs. Patriots game is discussed: how Tim Tebow played, the costly fumbles, the chances of still winning the AFC West, and the risks the team should be taking in the last two games. In honor of Mecklenburg, the guys discuss the Top 5 NFL Linebackers where Ross gravitates towards some local names and Nate sticks with some classics and one John Elway tormentor. We still have plenty of Rockies, Colorado Buffs, and Colorado State Rams eye black patches from Eyeblack.com to give away. Just shoot us an email at show@coloradosportsguys.com and we'll send you out some. And if you want to see what Mecklenburg is up to now, check out his website: Karl Mecklenburg.com and support his efforts and read about his tales in his book: Heart of a Student Athlete.
