Insurance products can get a little complex, so ask some follow-up questions to determine what direction you should go with that individual. Look at the products that are available and figure out which products are a good fit for your employee population based on their wants, needs, and demographics. An insurance product either provides control for policyholders or maximizes income at the cost of the policy holder yielding control of the assets to the company. If you know the answer to where a product sits in those two categories, then you'll know just about everything else about that product. While it is possible to technically get some liquidity while still having a higher guaranteed income, the liquidity gained will not be very ideal. Even though she was making money from her website, she didn't feel like it was a real business, so she started attending Masterminds to learn more. Tessa found she needed the emotional support of having a team of like-minded people around her. Someone can have a six or seven-figure business, but hate their business and not feel fulfilled by their life. Find groups and resources where you're actually getting advice and tools that you can implement. Surround yourself with people who understand and respect that you are the one who knows your business and yourself the best. Bringing someone else into your business forces you to operate at a higher level. You don't need to post on major job sites; look within your own community first. For example, Tessa hired through Instagram at first. When hiring, Tessa suggests you ask them to tell a story about a time they overcame a challenge, and ask them their opinion about something trivial to see that they can make a commitment and not be a yes-person. Tessa realized she was approaching burnout when she stopped feeling excited about her work. Growing your business depends on being flexible and adapting to the changing online landscape. Tessa challenged herself to post something every quarter that is more controversial or more personal and that scares her. If you buy a course online, make sure you have an accountability buddy to do it. Her past experiences with sponsored posts were formulaic and based on how other food bloggers did it, but she learned from Sachit and others how to build larger partnerships and create relationships from sponsorships. Through her success with building partnership relationships, Tessa has become a case study and an advisor for how brands should work with influencers. Tessa learned to ask open-ended questions of her sponsors to understand how their organizations work so she learns what would work best for both of them. No one opens Instagram excited to see sponsored content, so you should prioritize sponsorships that work with content you already post organically and that you care about and whose products you use. Question your assumptions that something has to be done a certain way. Sell your own content to your audience and remind them of the work that goes into it. The most important fundamental skills you need to be a successful published author are marketing and sales. Tessa is writing a second cookbook but is self-publishing it. The hardest part is marketing the book for pre-sale while creating it in order to fund it at the same time. Don't do something you don't like just to see if it'll be successful, because if it is successful, you'll have to continue doing something you hate. If you're bored with your content and the content others in your niche are putting out, do something surprising. 112: How To Have Awkward Money Conversations With Your Clients “How much do you charge?”  “Can you give me a discount?” “Sounds so expensive. What can you do and offer me?”It's very rare that you'll get through your entire business without ever having to have at least a slightly awkward conversation about money. But that's business. Today, we're talking about having awkward money conversations with your clients. But don't worry because I have a couple of tips on how you can make them less awkward! Let's get into it.Give it at least a day03:12- 03:25 The very first thing is when someone sends you an awkward conversation, and this is usually over email, don't feel like you have to respond right away, and don't respond in panic. Give it at least a day.04:31- 04:41 (10) There are a couple more reasons for that. One is you might have to create a procedure around it. This is something I really recommend rather than making exceptions for everyone.03:41- 04:03 So you're not leaving them hanging, but you're also not making a decision based on urgency. Sometimes people will ask you something and, to be honest, you don't know the answer to it then it's ok to go back and talk to your coach or your mentor to see if they have experienced that before.04:21- 04:27 Just be okay with not responding right away and giving yourself time to get a good response.Create a Procedure04:42- 04:51 Create a procedure that allows people and yourself to go back to your client and say “Here's what we do.” like an SOP. 04:52- 05:15 A perfect example is refunds. If somebody asks for a refund, if you don't have any terms & conditions in place, now's the perfect time to create them. You might not be able to enforce it with this particular client, but at least you can go back and say, “I can make an exception this time, but for the future, this is the new procedure.”Don't makeup stories05:27- 05:45 Awkward conversations are just a fact of business. It could be something you just haven't thought of it before or it hasn't come up for you before. Or, just to be honest, sometimes people can be really difficult and it's got nothing to do with you at all.06:15- 06:40 The truth is, when you give it a little bit of time, you realize that it's just a journey in business. Everyone gets refund requests. It's inevitable because you're doing business. I get refund requests all the time. The more business that you do, the more refunds that you'll get because it will follow a predictable percentage.06:41- 07:08 But if you let any of these awkward money conversations create a story about yourself where you think to yourself, “I'm just terrible at being in business. I shouldn't do this anymore. They hate me. I suck. I losing money doing business. I should quit,” then you're really going to miss the lesson and you're really going to miss the opportunity to create things in your business that will drive you forward.07:09- 07:16  Creating procedures out of awkward situations will create a good foundation for you to build your business on.Outsource it or delegate07:23- 07:36 Now, this is great if you already have an assistant. I have some resources for you if you haven't hired your first assistant. But, first, you must learn how to delegate it and let someone else be the bad person.07:46- 8:30 If you've emailed my team at Soul Rich Woman, you're not emailing me and I'm not refunding you. That is my assistant and she knows the procedure and she doesn't get triggered by it. She just does the procedure. The SOP. It means it's wonderful for me because I don't have to deal with it. We've got a procedure that we've agreed on, but I don't have to be the bad person. Sometimes she does have to be the bad person if someone's asking for a refund outside the refund period. She has to tell them no. And that sucks. Sometimes it is good to have someone else in your business who can reinforce that for you.Script it out09:02- 09:22 This is especially important if you're going to have one of those awkward money conversations on the phone. If you're on Skype, turn off your video and just say, “Look, let's just do this on audio because it helps with the sound.” Script it out. 105: Be A Contributor Not A TakerAre you a contributor or a taker? What does any of this have to do with you? A contributor is others-focused and prefers to offer support to others. A taker is self-focused and putting their own interests ahead of the needs of others. In this episode, I will talk about one of the biggest things I've learned in my business and how it helped me change my mindset about the role I play in the world. You can be a contributor, a leader02:10- 02:13 If you really care about the topic, you can be a contributor, a leader.  02:14- 02:15  You don't have to know everything.  02:42- 02:47  First and foremost, you would need to give yourself permission to show up where you are at exactly right now.  03:33- 03:38  So here are some thoughts for you, “Your movements need to have many voices especially yours”. You need to stand out in the crowd04:25- 04:27 You need to stand out in the crowd.04:28- 05:03 Because worried that you're not standing out in the crowd or that you're not super original? Guess what? If you're a contributor or a leader, you can keep your eyes on your own work. There are many parts to the same outcome, and many industries have their own niches within niches, there are different price points, too. And every industry needs diversity. Especially now, more than ever, customers are looking out for role models who look and sound like you. So, you've got to show up and inspire them.  05:47- 05:49 The movement needs your voice.Empower people to find their own answers05:58- 06:01 The next thing is to empower people to find their own answers.  06:02- 06:25 Gurus think there only one answer, and they want people to be reliant on them alone, but contributors let people find their own answers so you can help people follow their intuition, develop their own self-awareness by being a leader, sharing your voice, giving them tips, you don't need to have all the answer.06:23- 06:29 You don't need to have all the answers because it's just about sharing stories like what I'm doing now and being relatable. 06:44- 06:50 (6) If you're a leader of others asking them questions helped them find their own answers.    07:41- 07:52 (11) You don't need to have all the answers to be a contributor, you can just get good at asking questions, start conversations, well-coming opinions from your own industry. Build a community, not a following07:56- 08:28 Now there is a tendency in our world at the moment to count the number of followers that you have even the likes, shares that you have. And everyone seems to be obsessed with this. But if you're a contributor, you're building a community that you are a member of, as well. That doesn't mean you're the only one who has to have all the answers. You curate answers for a lot of different things in your community.Creating safe spaces08:33- 09:09 One of the other aspects of being a contributor is creating safe spaces for people to explore that topic. You might have a free or a paid Facebook group or you can have some sort of way that people can come together, and together you can think of the answers yourself, without you having to be the guru of everyone else. It can really be exhausting if everyone's looking to you for the right answer, and if you're trying to be everything to everyone. You can't do it, but if you're a contributor, it's okay for you to build a community, where there are lots of different voices as well.People need the basics09:14- 09:29 The last thing I want to say is this, people just need to hear the basics. You do not need to know everything about everything. So you got to think, people need the basics, again and again, and they need to hear it from different people, and in different flavors, in different industries.You don't have to be perfect10:00- 10:40  Lastly, don't feel like you have to be perfect. Just be honest. You don't have to be this untouchable guru, who is perfect all the time, because a lot of people don't even try to put themselves out there because they worry that people are going to think, “Well, I'm not perfect. I can't be a guru.” The best way to avoid that is just to tell your truth. Tell your story. No one can copy your particular story, and that is why I love asking a question about your origin story, your chronological story, your milestone, and all these will help you to build up a flow. She held a spot on the 2009 U.S. National Muaythai team that competed at IFMA, the Muaythai World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Katie is also a member of the Krav Maga Alliance Training Team, an MTAA Champion, a KMA Force Instructor, and was voted the Krav Maga Alliance 2017 'Instructor of the Year'.   In this episode, Katie and I discuss: The importance of giving yourself grace and not pressuring yourself to be 100% all the time, and how that can open you up to more authentic experiences. Episode 9: Failed Partnerships Given A Second Chance Hello and welcome to today's episode. It is all about failed partnerships given a second chance. I went through a failed partnership, went into a 6-figure debt and it was horrible. And I labeled myself, I'm not worthy of doing business anymore, I should just go back and become an occupational therapist once again in the healthcare industry that I was. I'm not capable enough, I'm just so stupid. I labeled myself with all these negative emotions because I wasn't able to get out of my black hole. Giving yourself a second chance(02:05 - 02:20) When I started to own my story and tell it as it is and feel the pain, I went through all the pain that was there. I transcended to being able to stand up once again. (02:21 - 02:37) I gave myself a second chance. It was not because of choice. It was because I found a mentor who was able to guide me through my difficult times, who counseled me and walked with me during my difficult times. (02:40 - 03:00) I'm very glad that he encouraged me. And he asked me this question: What is worse than rock bottom? The only way is up. Turn your mess into a message he said, and I was blown away. The blueprint of your mind(03:10 - 03:32) You see we make our language, our words, and our mind, whatever that we are thinking into a reality. But do you know that every spoken word and everything that you think in your mind becomes a blueprint. What is the blueprint that you wanna give yourself in order to achieve your success?(03:34 - 03:53) I gave myself a second chance and because of this mentor, I really respect him a lot and I just trusted him and just followed exactly what needs to be done to go from offline to online. To move my life forward. Ask for someone else's help!(03:54 - 04:10) Remember we are not alone. If you keep thinking that you're alone and you're not willing to ask for help and you're just stuck in your own blackhole then it will be very difficult because you'll be left overwhelmed and unworthy forever.The rise of the second chance(04:26 - 04:32) Because I gave myself a second chance, I invested in a cafe retail chain with my partners.(04:37 - 04:44) And this time around we set a couple of things in place. Set contracts in place, who invested how much.(04:49 - 04:57) Will our shares be diluted? What kind of things do we need to do, what kind of roles do we need to play within our respective positions? (05:18 - 05:28) In the end, because of a more strategic way of partnership we were able to grow the business into three countries. The common goal(05:35 - 06:01) In total, we have 18 franchisees and licensees. It was amazing, I never thought we could make so much money. I never thought I would have such a breakthrough in partnerships. Yes, we do fight, we do quarrel, but you know what is the main difference here? We had a vision. All of us have a common vision, a common goal.(06:02 - 06:12) We wanted to bring coffee culture into the lives of many people out there and also to help people to start their own businesses. Establishing Soul Rich Woman(06:24 - 06:43) Because of this knowledge, because I've given myself a second chance, this led on to how I grew Soul Rich Woman into seven countries. Even though she was making money from her website, she didn’t feel like it was a real business, so she started attending Masterminds to learn more. Tessa found she needed the emotional support of having a team of like-minded people around her. Someone can have a six or seven-figure business, but hate their business and not feel fulfilled by their life. Find groups and resources where you’re actually getting advice and tools that you can implement. Surround yourself with people who understand and respect that you are the one who knows your business and yourself the best. Bringing someone else into your business forces you to operate at a higher level. You don’t need to post on major job sites; look within your own community first. For example, Tessa hired through Instagram at first. When hiring, Tessa suggests you ask them to tell a story about a time they overcame a challenge, and ask them their opinion about something trivial to see that they can make a commitment and not be a yes-person. Tessa realized she was approaching burnout when she stopped feeling excited about her work. Growing your business depends on being flexible and adapting to the changing online landscape. Tessa challenged herself to post something every quarter that is more controversial or more personal and that scares her. If you buy a course online, make sure you have an accountability buddy to do it. Her past experiences with sponsored posts were formulaic and based on how other food bloggers did it, but she learned from Sachit and others how to build larger partnerships and create relationships from sponsorships. Through her success with building partnership relationships, Tessa has become a case study and an advisor for how brands should work with influencers. Tessa learned to ask open-ended questions of her sponsors to understand how their organizations work so she learns what would work best for both of them. No one opens Instagram excited to see sponsored content, so you should prioritize sponsorships that work with content you already post organically and that you care about and whose products you use. Question your assumptions that something has to be done a certain way. Sell your own content to your audience and remind them of the work that goes into it. The most important fundamental skills you need to be a successful published author are marketing and sales. Tessa is writing a second cookbook but is self-publishing it. The hardest part is marketing the book for pre-sale while creating it in order to fund it at the same time. Don’t do something you don’t like just to see if it’ll be successful, because if it is successful, you’ll have to continue doing something you hate. If you’re bored with your content and the content others in your niche are putting out, do something surprising. Tessa’s favorite part of her job is the ability to do whatever she wants when she wants to and to structure her day how she feels comfortable.   3 Key Takeaways: Give yourself the space to be creative and stay recharged and excited about your work. Kevin Bingham is the Managing Director at Deloitte, where he has 21 years experience in consulting. A 26 year veteran of the industry, Kevin leads the medical professional liability practice with an analytical focus on Workers’ Compensation claims. He is a renowned public speaker and has published more than 80 articles on advanced analytics.
