When it comes to creating a progressive overload plan, we have touched on a lot of elements so far. However, when it comes to how to specifically create your program, whether you are creating a program for yourself, finding one online, or looking to work with a trainer in person, there are some nuances that need to be discussed. Key Takeaways If You Want to Improve Your Strength Training, You Should: Give yourself the freedom to warm up and work on balance as a key part of your strength training program Focus on the type of exercises that will help you feel good for longer Challenge yourself with where your current ability level is and up the ante over time Consistency is the Name of the Game When you are doing a deadlift, overhead press, bench press, or squat, you need to familiarize your body with the movement pattern you are going to be doing that day. Movement prep and balance work will help you prepare your body for what is coming next, and create positive changes in how your body and brain relate to each other more effectively when things get heavy. Giving yourself the freedom to warm up, be consistent, and listen to your body, is what is going to get you further in your progressive overload plan. Strength Training for Every Age Movement prep and balance work are two things that I program into every session of Strong with Steph. Especially as we transition from perimenopause to postmenopause, we need to work with the changes happening in our bodies to help ourselves stay strong for longer. The truth is, that our body loses strength, hormones, and energy as we get older, which is why we need to have a strength training plan that helps us combat what we are losing and instead helps us find gains. Implementing a well-planned program takes the burden off of you so that you can focus on feeling great. Are you ready to reevaluate your strength training plan as a woman over 40? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode A recap of what we have spoken about so far when it comes to strength training over 40 (2:45) The importance of balance work for longevity as we age (6:45) How movement preparation can improve your training program (14:52) Understanding the role of estrogen when it comes to your joints and their needs (20:16) Examples of balance work and movement prep that show up in the Strong with Steph Workout Plan (30:15) Quotes “Having these guide your strength training is super, super important, and not something you want to gloss over when you are either writing a program for yourself, finding one online, or looking to work with a trainer in person.” (2:35) “Movement preparation and balance work create a foundation for building strength and are so important when we are considering longevity in training and safety and mitigating risk to the best of our possible influence, especially as we are aging.” (6:13) “Research strongly supports the idea that warming up with the actual lift you plan to perform but at a lighter load is an effective way to prepare your body for heavier lifting.” (21:20) “Addressing these things through training is very important, and there is something that you can do about it.” (29:08) “Movement prep and balance work are essential, and we know they are going to play an important role in joint health, mitigating the risk of injury and enhancing our experience of progressive overload.” (39:24) Featured on the Show Follow Steph on YouTube Get 7 Free Days of Strong with Steph Apply for Strength Nutrition Unlocked Full Show Notes Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative Rate and review on Apple Podcasts Related Episodes FYS 435: RPE & Autoregulation: Smart Tools for Strength Gains Over 40 FYS 434: Progressive Overload: How to Keep Getting Stronger

What does it take to redefine leadership beyond the battlefield? In this episode of Leadership Blueprints, former CH-53E helicopter pilot, Marine Corps veteran, and MCFA Project Leader Steve Kempa sheds light on his transformative journey from Marine to mentor. Steve shares how his time in the military helped shape his understanding of leadership and how transitioning to the civilian world pushed him to embrace empathy, emotional intelligence, and the power of collaboration. He also offers insight into the “mission first, people always” mantra that he learned during his career as a Marine, reflecting on the importance of balancing goals with compassion. From earning his MBA while on active duty to championing veterans' mental health through November, Steve opens up about overcoming personal challenges, staying grounded through martial arts, and finding purpose in mentoring the next generation. This conversation is essential listening for veterans, mentors, and anyone seeking to reimagine leadership beyond titles and rank! Key Points From This Episode:• How he found new challenges and professional growth after 10 years in the Marines.• How he earned an MBA while on active duty, focusing on marketing, innovation, and design.• The challenges of adapting military leadership skills to civilian environments.• Why inclusion, emotional intelligence, and coaching rather than leading are key.• Shifting from hierarchical, rank-based leadership to collaborative, empathy-driven leadership.• The value of building trust and motivating teams by connecting their tasks to larger goals.• The power of leveraging the veteran network for guidance and opportunities.• Reasons to stay active, seek fulfilling endeavors, and focus on personal growth. Quotes:“Having empathy [and] understanding that you never know what someone else might be going through – is so crucial because as much as we need to get the mission done, something that I learned – during my time in the military is ‘mission first people always'.” — Steve Kempa “As flawed as I may be, I still find purpose and value in mentoring young men and helping other people out.” — Steve Kempa Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Steve KempaSteve Kempa on LinkedInThe Challenge CenterThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal ChangeMovemberThe Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier's EducationWith the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by E. Crafting an exceptional customer journey, from the initial contact through every touchpoint to post-service interactions, is crucial for ensuring your clients' satisfaction. This holistic approach to customer experience is key to setting your business apart in today's competitive market. Your customer journey consists of several key stages: inception, selling, onboarding, service delivery, and offboarding. Each stage deserves careful attention to make sure your clients feel valued and supported. By truly understanding their needs and preferences, you can create a more personalized and effective experience that fosters long-term relationships and boosts customer satisfaction. Consistency in brand personality throughout the customer journey is often overlooked, yet it's vital. A consistent brand helps build trust and makes your customers feel more connected to your business. By focusing on these aspects, you'll not only meet but exceed customer expectations, driving positive referrals and contributing to your business growth. Quotes “Having grown up in the restaurant business and hospitality, I have always, always paid very close attention to the customer experience that we provide our web customers. And one of the things we've always done is make them feel like they're walking into a restaurant, even though they're working into a virtual office.” “I think this is where a lot of businesses could differentiate, and the customer experience they provide could easily make or break them, since we're living in such a hyper competitive world.” “Customer Journey for Dummies, it is the complete sum of experiences that a customer or client will go through when they're interacting with your company, and that starts before they're actually even paying clients. “It encompasses every single touch point and stage that a customer passes through, from first becoming aware of your brand until they make a purchase, and also if they have to return something.” “Even the way you continue to interact with them after the scope of work is complete is still part of the customer experience or customer journey.” “We're not order takers in the web development world, we're really more partners, really invested in the outcome and growing that business or growing that personal brand, just as much as the client is.” “Throughout the customer journey of working with us, we have teammates whose sole responsibility it is to check in with the client and to keep them on timeline, because timeline impacts budget, right?” “There's also an offboarding time period for clients that are heavily engaged in the workflow, offboarding and then also continuing to cultivate the relationship and continuing to help them grow and establish their brands.” “One reason why we send newsletters and we do this podcast is it's very much for our existing and past clients, just as much as it is for our potential clients. We want to keep supporting them and helping them to grow far into the future.” “One common [mistake] is just not thinking about it. Another common one is not treating a customer the way you would want to be treated and really being very focused on yourselves versus what might be going on in that customer's world or role.” “A lot of our clients are extremely busy during our own working hours, right? We have to be mindful of what their day to day is like, and also kind of tap in to understand where their overwhelm point is and be able to adjust accordingly.” “We have these different points in our service delivery, really taking the time to map out every single touch point down.” Links mentioned in this episode: Excellence Wins: A No-Nonsense Guide to Becoming the Best in a World of Compromise by Horst Schulze: https://a.co/d/5rIyWeO

Having been on a few, I'm just going to say, block out the following week or two; don't plan a trip shortly after. Summary Welcome to another great episode of the Startup Junkie Podcast! In this live recorded special episode, hosts Jeff Amerine and Caleb Talley join Amy Herzberg and Bob Ford, the co-founders of TheatreSquared (T2), and Shannon Jones, the executive director, on the set of A Christmas Carol for a captivating discussion about TheatreSquared's origin and mission. Since its founding in 2005, TheatreSquared's locally produced and nationally acclaimed productions have remained rooted in its founding vision that “theatre done well and with passion can transform lives and communities.” Throughout the episode, Amy, Bob, and Shannon share how TheatreSquared has impacted Arkansas's artistic landscape and how its reputation continues to blossom in the performing arts world. Like you said, in our mission, it transforms communities. And the thing about T2 and the thing I think that we do really well, and I think we'll continue to expand upon, is making that human connection. And I think one thing that we use to help build upon what is already there is our ability to adapt.” - Shannon Jones, (33:52) “When I see a young person say, ‘I've never seen me and my friends on stage before, I've never seen my story before. Thank you.' That's how I measure [success]. That's what keeps me going, that to me is impact. We could fill this place, I guarantee, if we put on certain shows over and over again, and that would also look like a certain kind of success. But our goal is to do both because what we're discovering is that our community wants to see a full range of stories because, as we know, everybody's different, but also everybody's the same. But that's an amazing kind of conundrum.” - Bob Ford, (41:19)

I stopped using the word someday.” - Greg Michelman "So you set people up so they can have wins in each day and you get to decide what the wins are, and so as a coach, you can set people up to win." - Jon Mossey“If you're not taking action, you don't even realize what you're missing out on. So it pushes you to be better every single day." - Greg Michelman "External motivation isn't always going to be there, you got to have that intrinsic motivation, you got to be constantly asking yourself, and I know it's cliche, but you got to ask yourself what your why is. You got to ask yourself, what is your meaningful mission? What is the impact? Why am I doing this in the first place? What is my existential goal? Let's think about our health from a totally different angle today. We often talk about optimal health from a mental, emotional, or physical position. Lately, I've been thinking more about well-being in terms of energetic health. So let's discuss energetic health and what it means to really take care of it! Managing your energetic health requires you to: Understand what your natural energetic health is Consider how your methods for moving from one level to another are truly serving you Being aware of your energy and how other people affect it Show other people how to meet you where you are energetically Shield yourself from unwanted energy Embracing Your Natural Energetic Level We all have a natural level of energy. It varies from person to person, but we all have it. This doesn't mean that one level of energy is better or worse than another. It just is what it is. That's why I talk about the importance of understanding and embracing your natural level of energy the way it is. Understanding and Managing Your Energy If we live at a lower energy and desire a higher energy, it's important to notice where we are trying to get that energy. And if we're trying to find a lower energy, we have to pay attention to how we try to bring ourselves down to that level. I explain how I define different energetic levels and why you may want to move from one to another based on the circumstances. Something I have come to understand is how we flex our energy in different situations. Often, if we're feeling very comfortable, we'll bring our energy up and if we're feeling uncomfortable, we'll flex it down. This is important to know because we want to honor, accept, and optimize our energy. Navigating Energetic Shifts It's normal for energy to shift when spending time with people of different energy levels. This doesn't mean that something is wrong with your energy. Paying attention to how you feel when these shifts occur is a great way to understand what type of energy you want more of. When energy you don't want is coming at you, it's crucial to shield yourself from it. I discuss what it takes to protect your energy level from outside forces. This usually involves setting boundaries and managing your environment to better support your desired energy. What type of energetic shifts do you seek more of? Leave a comment on the episode page! Having higher energy doesn't mean that we're greater or less than. Lower or higher is not better. It just is.” [4:08] “You can mingle with any energy you want to mingle with if you abide by those golden rules; I will protect my energetic health, I expect that you can do the same, and together we will optimize.” [21:30] “Really taking hold of your energetic health is allowing it to flex up and flex down without judgment and with acceptance.” [24:44] Resources Mentioned Transform Energy Transform 7.0 Fit Women Collective Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative

You can create the type of business that honors your health and your priorities. It takes hard work, determination, and a whole lot of marketing, but with effort and defining your why, it is absolutely achievable. I'm joined by business strategist, Frenchie Ferenczi, to talk about her shift into flexible well-being and how she has created, and now helps others create, a business that serves their purpose. Key Takeaways Give yourself permission to be okay with your why. It will help grow a more authentic business. It will allow you to bring to life a more altruistic why, too. About Frenchie Ferenczi Frenchie Ferenczi is a business strategist and advisor for overwhelmed (but seriously ambitious) experts and creatives. She keeps small business owners stay close to the money and on the path to consistent revenue growth. From having sold-out launches to spending more time with their kids, she empowers her clients to achieve their biggest business goals without falling victim to the business grind. The Reality of Marketing As a business strategist and advisor, Frenchie brings a wealth of information to share about how her life transformed when she started her own business. Perhaps one of the best changes for her is that she now has the flexibility to weave her well-being into her schedule easier than when she had to answer to someone else's schedule. Frenchie understands the importance of prioritizing her health, especially as a business owner. For so many of us, especially physicians turned business owners, it can feel like we're drowning in marketing – and losing the heart of our business. But, as Frenchie says, marketing is one of the most important things you can do for your business growth, and, especially at the beginning, it needs to have a high priority. Effort, Manifestation, and Perseverance Our conversation shifted to the reality of effort and manifestation. Putting effort into something doesn't mean working non-stop to achieve it. It's about working hard when you do work. Similarly, Frenchie has some feelings about manifestation and the reality around it. Manifesting isn't as easy as wanting something and it will happen – there is hard work, determination, and perseverance that has to take place. Finally, we talk about the power of defining your why. Whatever your reason is for wanting something, being truthful with yourself about that is important and powerful. Your mission, values, and why can transform your life. How do you feel about manifestation? How are you living in alignment with your why? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode How your career can define your health habits [5:00] How to prioritize your health [10:00] The importance of marketing your business [13:00] What manifesting might look like [20:00] The power of perseverance [23:45] Why you need to define your personal why [23:30] Where to market your business [27:00] Quotes “Having that flexibility and knowing that I can weave my well-being into where it fits, rather than needing it to fit other people, is really lucky and has made a big difference.” [5:57] “When you are used to being in a profession, like a physician, when you are actually doing and delivering all the time, and then you need to switch to marketing most of the time, it's going to feel like you're doing nothing. But it is often, and is most likely, the most important work that you can do.” [13:38] “Effort doesn't mean that you always need to be going non-stop. But when you are going, it's hard work.” [21:37] “One of the tenets of f*ck manifesting I always challenge people with is to get real about your why because that's what keeps you motivated.” [24:20] “The best next steps are hiding in plain sight. You just need to know what questions to ask.” [28:07] Resources Mentioned Stay Close to the Money Listen to BS-Free Business Advice Business Genius Bootcamp Find Frenchie Ferenczi Online Follow Frenchie Ferenczi on Facebook | Instagram Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 143: The Power of Asking for Help Episode 164: Break The Rules Episode 151: Get Snobby With Your Time

“Get really curious about why we are the way that we are with respect and awareness. And then with a sense of embracing and honoring, ask where is it that we want to go? Who do we want to be? And if we had full agency to create that, what would that look like?”, asks co-host Clayton Olson. Today, co-host Paige Easter picks Clayton Olson's brain on the steps to end the war within ourselves so that we can move forward in our lives and become the person we want to be. Taking examples from her own life and experiences with hypnotherapy, Paige asks Clayton to walk her through how he would coach someone in her position of wanting to be a more confident person. Clayton explains the model of logical levels, developed by Robert Dilts, to showcase the six levels of ways reality can be organized and uses it to illustrate where limiting beliefs come from.Self improvement begins with taking responsibility for yourself and your life instead of continuing to blame external factors. Many of the beliefs holding you back are actually beliefs that were created during childhood. And when you realize these are outdated, then you can start to see your present situation differently. In order to make changes at the identity level, you need to fully embrace your vision for who you want to be and the life you want to have. If you are still in a victim mindset, you will not be ready to step into your journey of self improvement. Personal development requires you to look at those beliefs from your past through a lens of curiosity rather than judgment. Stopping the war with yourself requires you to take agency for your present circumstances. Learn more about the model of logical levels, the ways childhood experiences can cause our past selves to get ‘stuck', and how to use enhanced awareness and curiosity to propel your personal growth forward. Quotes“Having that sense of responsibility that I am the one that's creating this is a foundational platform from which to jump into the personal development work.” (4:48-4:57 | Paige)“When someone is going into a place of self-judgment, one of the tools that I love to employ is to begin to help them see how whatever pattern they are creating in their life that is currently unwanted, is actually a protective mechanism, or a pattern that was useful at one time earlier in their life.” (9:10-9:40 | Clayton) “We can absolutely at times create a change in our environment. Which creates new behaviors. Which actually will trickle all the way down to our identity if we do it enough times.” (20:25-20:34 | Clayton)Connect with Clayton:Website: https://claytonolsoncoaching.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtKW9swe4-j596iCIh2_nrA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/claytonrolson/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/claytonolsoncoaching/Connect with Paige:Website: https://lucidshiftcoaching.com/Lucid Shift Coaching IG: https://www.instagram.com/lucid_shift_coaching/Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. Quotes:“Having a great team is the most important thing you'll ever do as a dentist.” (1:40—1:45) -Kirk“Ever since COVID-19 and people working from home, there's been this online community, especially with the younger people that are on our teams, where they're starting to see all of these toxic culture posts and “quiet quitting,” everyone who is working through their workday just getting enough done to get by. They're just not all-in. I know one of our core values at ACT is all-in, and for those of us who have always naturally had that personality style, I think it's hard to understand where these people are coming from. But if you hop on to some of these social media platforms, “quiet quitting,” if you search it on TikTok, millions upon millions of posts. And so, that's what people are up against now that is brand new. It's something that employers, dentists, have never had to really worry about in the past.” (3:25—4:13) -Miranda“Quiet quitting is something that's been around for a long time, it just wasn't labeled. But it's become more progressive since the work-from-home era that we had over the last couple of years. So, it's really those people who, they show up, they may show up on time, they may show up a few minutes late, right under the radar. They're always doing just enough to make sure that they're not having repercussions in the workplace. But they're not really going above and beyond, and they're certainly not giving their all. This episode features an interview with Christopher Shryock, SVP and Chief People Officer at Sam's Club, a chain of membership-only retail warehouses. They have 600 clubs nationwide and another 200 internationally. Christopher heads all things HR-related for the over 100,000 Sam's Club Employees. Before Sam's Club, he spent about 14 years at PepsiCo serving in global HR leadership roles. And on this episode, Christopher talks about why you should rethink hiring based on interviews, how to simplify employee processes, and the real reason why it pays to have a diverse workforce.Quotes*”Having one system is not sufficient to create a great employee experience, but it is a necessity. Because if you don't even know where your associates are, if you can't even have and track basic detail and information about them, how are you ever going to provide them with something that's going to be personalized and relevant?”*”I want to make sure that my team is interacting with the business on areas that matter. And that's about identifying and developing talent, building organizational capability, and holistically solving associate problems. So it's not about automating away communication between HR and the business. But we want to make that much simpler, more relevant, and that we are communicating on things that really matter.”*”We're trying to understand who's likely to stay with us and who's likely to perform better. So understanding and assessing simple, basic cognitive ability, what preferences and experiences people have, and a little bit of situational judgment… And part of why we do that is because we hire people that perform better and stay longer. How to Put Together a Crisis Coverage Plan Episode #445 with Paul Sletten Sometimes, you can't see bad things coming. And when it happens, you need to be prepared. One way is by having a crisis coverage plan, and Kirk Behrendt brings back Paul Sletten, founder of the Sletten Group, to share his expert advice on how to create a plan that will keep you covered and buy you time. Stay covered no matter your age, health, or financial situation! To learn how to check your boxes for coverage, listen to Episode 445 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Join or create a practice coverage group. Three or four dentists is not enough for a group. Coverage groups should meet regularly and often. Be selective in putting your coverage group together. Plan out who makes the call in a crisis, and who to call. Coverage groups can also help in non-crisis situations. Quotes: “[Having a crisis plan is] extremely important. Everybody needs to have a transition plan in place, regardless of what stage they're at in their career. In fact, they need to have two plans.” (3:39—3:54) “Maybe the percentage of [a crisis happening] is smaller than five percent — but they happen. And when they happen, one of two things will occur: either the practice will go into a nosedive because they're not acting on it or putting a plan together or had never thought about it previously, or the practice will get covered.” (4:16—4:40) “Simply defined, a crisis of this type would be something that alters the ability of the owner of the practice to be able to continue to be productive in the practice, either for a short period of time because they're ill but they're going to recover, or for an extended period of time because they were in an accident and can't physically perform and that puts them in a crisis, or because something happens tragically, and they die. But that's very rare compared to the likelihood of disability.” (5:36—6:16) “The place to begin is to put together what we call a practice coverage group. A practice coverage group is a group of like-minded dentists who respect each other and who are in proximity to each other who would be capable of covering for one another in the event of disability or some kind of a crisis. And I've seen people put these groups together, but they'd only put three or four dentists in their coverage group. And that's a real tremendous strain on the covering dentists. That's not enough.” (7:41—8:23) “If you only have three or four [dentists in your practice coverage group], they're going to run out of gas and put the practice back in jeopardy — even though it had been covered — because they just don't have the time to do it, because there's such a big time demand on each person. So, eight or nine, those are really good numbers.” (8:49—9:11) “The commitments that the coverage group would be able to make would be to cover the practice for three months, let's say, pretty much at a max. It can go longer than that, but in our experience, that pretty well maxes it out. But that does buy you time, if it's going to be a slow recovery, to find a locum tenens who can come in and be the dentist to cover it for several months, if needed.” (10:43—11:18) “In some situations, we've seen where by the time we get called, a couple of months have gone by [since the crisis occurred]. The team has no idea what their future is, and the family is so grief-stricken, in the event of a death, that they haven't taken any action and they haven't called anybody. So, part of the plan you need there in the crisis coverage plan is there needs to be, ‘If this happens, who makes the call, and who do you call?'” (15:07—15:42) “Insurance companies are very slow to pay with disability coverage too, as you all know . . . I would say five to six months. In the event of a death, in the event of life insurance, if your practice is worth a million dollars and you're in a partnership, for example, you need to carry insurance that will allow, upon...

Hitting a strength training plateau is so frustrating, especially when you feel like there's nothing you can do to push through it. I'm joined by one of my students, Brittany Sterling, to talk about how she benefits from the support of her community to help her overcome her strength plateaus. We also talk about cheering on other women, the surprising benefits of strength training, and why you need to eat more food! Key Takeaways What Can Change by Applying the Program Information: More compliments from your partner Huge strides in your fitness goals Feeling like a nicer person with more stable emotions About Brittany Sterling Brittany Sterling is a member of my community. I asked her to come on to talk about her experience with Strength Nutrition Unlocked and how she's developed her fitness routine through strength training. The Support of Community is Second to None Strength training has always been a part of Brittany's fitness routine, but she talks about how she hasn't always been hitting her goals and often hit plateaus. One of the biggest things that Brittany can attribute her success to these days is the power of community. Community is the best support system when you're serious about your fitness journey. It's there for motivation and support when you're feeling stuck or you're injured. And each community member brings their own resources, perspectives, and experiences that can help fuel you forward. Surprising Benefits of Strength Training When Brittany started working with me in my training programs, she learned how to apply the knowledge she knew from books in a more practical setting. She started seeing the gains she always wanted to and felt supported in all aspects of her life. One of the most surprising changes for her was that she started to feel happier and more joyful in her life - and her partner even said she was a nicer, more fun person to be around. When you're balanced in your fitness routine, including eating enough calories, you're going to notice those awesome differences! Your fitness journey doesn't have to be perfect. When you take that element out of it, ditch the all or none thinking, and start enjoying your body now! Let me know in the comments of the episode page what you're doing to overcome your plateaus and what role community plays for you. In This Episode Why a support system or supportive environment is so beneficial [8:00] How community can help get you through rough periods in your training [11:15] Why it's so crucial for you to fuel your body and eat more food when you're working long, hard days [20:00] What prompted Brittany to seek help with her fitness routine [24:15] How calorie tracking might lead you into a scarcity mindset, leading to overeating [27:00] What happens when you apply your book fitness knowledge to your fitness journey [29:00] How following a balanced fitness plan with proper nutrition can help you lead a more balanced life [34:00] How your fitness journey can inspire other women [39:00] What happens when you remove the element of perfection from your fitness journey [41:30] Quotes “Having people that continue to support and push you, even when you feel down and out, you have people that you can learn from. You have people that have been there. That no what it's like to slog through things. Maybe what you need to do today is not what you want it to look like. Maybe it's just doing a little something. Anything's better than nothing. Then you come out on the other side feeling so much more accomplished and better about yourself that you were able to overcome the emotional obstacle.” [9:06] “In the last seven years, I've had multiple physical injuries, both work-related and gym-related, and it feels like starting from scratch all over again. You get very frustrated because you know where you were going, how well you were doing, and think ‘I know I'm capable, but I just can't right now, so what's the point?' That's where having that community come in really makes a difference. People who have been there, are there with you, can cry, suffer, hold your hand, cheer you on - it really makes a huge difference in your ability to keep pushing forward to the other side.” [13:17] “Being well-fed makes me a nicer person!” [31:10] “We get so hyperfocused on how we look. For women, it's very much about appearances, skimpy bodysuits, and Lululemon head-to-toe. We do that to be noticed for how we look. How cool would it be to be noticed for what we can do? I don't feel like we do that enough as women. Giving and getting feedback from other women is so cool.” [37:42] “I don't have to do cardio for an hour at one time in order to be effective and progress myself in my goals. As long as I'm moving. A little bit of jump roping or three sets of pull-ups on the squat bar in my backyard so I can do those things has really created this opportunity to not feel like I have to miss out on other things. I don't have to sacrifice one thing for the other, I can do both, it just may not look like I want it to.” [40:51] “We get into those weird mentalities and vicious loops where we say, ‘more is more, all or nothing, it has to be perfect.' We put ourselves up for failure and fall into these weird, sneaky hate spirals. When you're able to let those go and naturally allow yourself to find movement when you can, it makes it so much more enjoyable and so much less like a chore. When you're able to find peace and enjoyment in that, other people notice and want to be part of it.” [43:04] Featured on the Show Join Strength Nutrition Unlocked Check out the full show notes here! “Having real numbers and real deadlines for your goals is more effective for helping you stay on track,” explains host Andrew. Oftentimes we set unrealistic goals for ourselves and then struggle when obstacles come our way. To combat self-sabotage, Andrew breaks down easy ways to stay on track and ensure that we set ourselves up for success. Whether your goal is weight loss, weight gain, or anything else, setting up realistic goals for yourself is crucial. It may be nice to dream big, but if you don't start small with achievable deadlines along the way, you may be setting yourself up for failure. But if you take your ultimate goal and work backward, you can find measurable ways of tracking your progress that will get you on the right track. Tune into this week's episode of The Code for a helpful conversation about setting goals. Learn more about the acronym behind S.M.A.R.T. goals, why you need a “why” behind your objective, and how to create reasonable deadlines. Quotes • “Having real numbers and real deadlines for your goals is more effective for helping you stay on track.” (4:30 - 4:38) • “Don't forget about any obstacles and hurdles that come along the way. And I'm not telling you to sandbag your goals, not do challenging things, and not dream big. But doing small bite-sized chunks is much more effective than trying to take over the world overnight.” (6:24 - 6:42) • “In the next 90 days, what are you going to accomplish that's going to set you on the trajectory to reach that ultimate goal?” (9:59 - 10:08) • “If we're shooting for some goal, and we're one or two degrees off over a long period of time, that's going to drastically impact how likely we are to achieve that goal.” (12:29 - 12:40) • “We're about results. We're about progress. We're about taking little steps of improvement every day, every week, and every month to push you in the direction of your goals.” (13:29 - 13:39) Links: Connect with Physio Room: Website | https://physioroomco.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/dr.andrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/ https://www.oberlo.com/blog/smart-goal-examples Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
The phrase “reach for the stars” is said to come from a poem written by Virgil called the Aeneid. This Latin poem was written sometime between 29 and 19 BC. The simple meaning behind it was to “set your goals in life high in order to achieve success.” It's an inspiring quote. However, we often overlook the word “stars” and set our sights on one “big” North Star. We then design a single path to reach that goal and forget to appreciate the collection of stars we acquire along the way that make up our very own beautiful constellation. Our guest, Professor Sharon Goldfeld, is a pediatrician and public health physician at the Royal Children's Hospital's Centre for Community Child Health and Theme Director for Population Health at the Murdoch Children's Research institute, who shares her career journey and how she visualizes each of her accomplishments as stars she collected along the way to her North Star, building an amazing constellation of stars that fueled her career success. She explains how she harnessed the “burn” or “power” from each star to help her achieve her North Star. She has a decade of experience in state government as senior policymaker in health and education, including holding the role of Principal Medical Advisor in the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Her unique career has seamlessly straddled research, policy and practice with her cross-sectoral approach ensuring her research is roust and of high policy and practice utility for greater translation success. Her research program focuses on addressing disadvantage and inequity though epidemiological studies, developing metrics to drive system change, and community based randomised controlled trials (RCT's) in both health and education to improve child development. As the COVID-19 pandemic deepens, Prof Goldfeld has led the effort at MCRI to leverage existing cohort studies to provide a unique understanding on how the pre-pandemic experiences of children and families shape risk and resilience for children during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in its aftermath. Sharon was recently awarded the inaugural Marles Medal for excellence in original research that led to outstanding achievement in research impact. Quotes “Having this really hard relationship with food, I really wanted to share how food can be delicious and it can be nourishing and we can find that balance.” “I realized that the old ways of doing things of me just coming home after a long day, and either throwing something together really quickly or, um, you know, just eating takeout all the time, wasn't going to work anymore. I wanted to nourish myself, I wanted to nourish my family” “You need your meals to be satisfying and to balance your blood sugar so that you actually stay full and fueled.” “We have taste buds for a reason. If we're not enjoying our food, then it doesn't matter how healthy the meal is. We're not going to stick to whatever plan we're on if it doesn't actually taste good and it's not delicious' “Fruit is great for a smoothie, delicious and nutrient-dense. But if you put so much in there that. Spiking your blood sugar up to a million and then it's dropping down. You will be hungry really soon after. So having that balance in there, making sure there's some sort of a protein in there.” “Breakfast and lunch are important too. Especially if those are busy times of the day and you're not actually getting balanced meals” “ I think that midday fuel really sets us up for the rest of the day.” “I'll prep a Mason jar salad for lunch, and I'll just layer things in there” “I love having those options on hand that does have a good amount of protein in them to keep you satiated, that are easy to grab and throw together, and don't require a lot of cooking.” “Oftentimes in the afternoon, we might want something sweet because we're feeling a little bit low energy so having something in the fridge that I can grab, that's got a little bit of fat, a little bit of protein, and that tastes delicious.” “Whenever I talk about food, I love talking about the concepts of variety and balance. So we know that variety and balance are really important for nutrition, but they're also really important for satisfaction when it comes to food.” “I always recommend when you are doing your meal planning, especially if you're not used to meal planning, or you're just starting to meal plan, or you're just meal planning for a busier week - to look at your week, to look at your schedule and ask yourself where you need the most support.” “ Front-loading with those foods that make us feel really good because we show up as the best version of ourselves and we're feeling good throughout the day when we're not showing up at our meals super hangry.” “ Allowing that space for flexibility, but also creating that place where you can create that convenience.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. Best selling author and psychic medium Lisa Williams, joins JD and Suzy to talk about her life as a medium. In her youth Lisa was unaware that her ability as a medium was a unique gift. Steps to Take to Cure Loneliness Understanding who you are Accepting who you are and loving yourself anyways Develop an exercise routine Challenge yourself mentally Setting small goals We can feel lonely even when we’re surrounded by people. Frivolous friendships won’t help you feel less alone; it’s all about creating meaningful connections. What if I told you that the most important relationship to build is the one you have with yourself? Let’s explore how we can curb our loneliness by connecting and loving ourselves. The Chief Complaint: “I Feel So Alone” Feeling lonely is something that most of us have felt at one point or another in our lives. It stems from many places, and something I want to really stress in this episode is that having more connections won’t always cure your loneliness. More Doesn’t Always Mean Better What does loneliness feel like to you? For me, it feels like an emptiness in my stomach. It’s aching, uncomfortable, and not something I want to sit with for a long time. You can have all the friends in the world, but if you don’t have someone you actually connect with, it’s likely not enough. Try to focus on creating meaningful connections, even if that’s only a handful of people, rather than broadening your friend circle. I want to be really clear here. When you’re making deep connections with someone else to help your loneliness, it doesn’t necessarily have to be another human. My loneliness shifted when we got a dog! In this episode, I also touch on the connection of bias and scarcity when it comes to loneliness. It’s actually possible for you to create your own loneliness because you’re so used to feeling this way, you can’t see a way out of it. Develop a Relationship with Yourself So what’s the solution? Well, I advocate for you to fall in love and build a relationship with yourself. When you feel strong in who you are, what you believe in, and what your priorities in life are, you will stop feeling the need to form false connections with other people. You build that relationship with yourself by truly understanding who you are. I found that getting an astrological birth chart reading and an Enneagram analysis both helped uncover aspects of myself I didn’t fully understand. Once I knew more of who I am, it was so much smoother to love all parts of me. Then you need to work on your physical health by developing an exercise routine you love. Next, activate your mental health with some brain-stimulating activities. And finally, start setting small goals that help you achieve the success you deserve. Trust me when I say that once you’re secure in who you are and love yourself, your relationships with other people will naturally develop. You’ll make deeper connections feel more loved, and those feelings of loneliness will start to disappear. Homework for Women Physicians Have you ever had any kind of personality analysis done? There is no better time than a lockdown to learn how to cook delicious, healthy meals at home. Whether you're brand new to the kitchen or a seasons expert, this episode with Maria Marlowe will answer many questions about cooking for health that you have. About Maria Marlowe Maria is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach who currently lives in Dubai. Her mission is to help busy women lose weight or clear up their acne by developing healthier eating habits. She offers recipes, meal plans, and an entire cooking school all designed to help you grocery shop, cook, and choose the healthiest foods - all without stress, overwhelm, and confusion. On this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, Maria talks to us about her ethos - eating real food. She explains how we can make cooking at home easy, something we all desperately want to do, especially now that we're eating out less. One of the first tips Maria gives us is how to make our fresh food last until the end of the week. Because let's be honest, is there anything worse than buying your fresh, leafy greens on the weekend, then having Friday roll around and they're a slimy, mushy mess in your fridge? Maria also encourages us to shop in the freezer section. Not for the processed foods many of us turn to, but for frozen vegetables and fish. Yes, fish! She explains how often the fish in the freezer section is fresher than that on the fresh fish counter. Maria talks us through what some of the healthiest foods on the planet are. You'll be happy to know that she agrees with me that we should all be eating cruciferous vegetables as often as we can! Maria also explains how to cook our food to get the most out of its nutritional value. Lastly, Maria shares how we can help ourselves through this stressful time. It's not only about our physical health, but showing ourselves compassion and self-love helps boost our mental and emotional health. She also explains what foods can help our overall health. In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have Greg Smith who speaks about creating an ideal community and culture in your customers and within the organization, gives tips on what’s the best way to create great content, how to be a top content creator, how to do marketing for courses, and tips to monetize your expertise with online courses! Greg Smith is a lawyer, an instructor, entrepreneur and the CEO and Founder of Thinkific, an all-in-one platform that allows you to create, market, and sell your own online courses. It offers the best tools, training, and support to kick start your own online education business. Greg is passionate about education and has taught thousands of students online and delivers amazing E-Learning experiences. For Greg, it started from tutoring students in law school, and turning it into a blog. He noticed that more people were getting interested in it. People were looking for options to acquire education outside the colleges. Fortunately, there is an explosion of acceptance of online education as the first place to go to learn. It created a poll from the learners. People prefer to go online first as their first point of contact for learning for a frequent career change, career opportunity and promotion, personal improvement like fitness and health, and the desire to learn more crafts and hobbies. Greg sees the potential of educating and reaching more people by making online courses. Together with his brother, they’ve created the first mini online course and later started their own company. Now, Greg’s company offers a variety of courses for people who want to create their own courses and memberships, to educate potential customers on their brand and website with full control over the content, pricing, and the business. Accordingly, Greg emphasizes the importance of marketing in any business in order to be successful. Thus, the top content creators must be really good in marketing, if not hiring someone else to do it. Greg really invested in his employees, his business and company and made sure that he’s building an ideal culture within the organization. It is a culture that’s concerned for everyone, united, and supporting each other to achieve their individual and company goals. Currently, Greg continuously helps entrepreneurs grow their business by getting their passion and message and knowledge out to the world. In Canada's Defence Policy (“Strong, Secure, Engaged”), it says the Canadian Armed Forces must reflect the diversity of the country that we defend, and that we need a military that looks like Canada. You often hear the phrase “stronger together” here in the military family community. If the military wants to reach its goal, families will be a big part of the process. Dr. Lisa Gunderson discusses privilege, bias, and a few things for the military community to consider. Special Guest Dr. Lisa Gunderson is an award-winning educator and frequent guest speaker on racial issues. Highlights Privilege and if the Canadian Armed Forces is a privileged institution. 9:48 Implicit bias. Examples of bias in a military setting. 16:01 A perfect example of implicit bias. Some things for the military community to consider. 26:03 Culture change is absolutely possible. With the end of the year here, creating a checklist or house cleaning is normal. This also applies to the staffing and recruiting industry because of how much money you’ll be able to save if you follow these five things that all staffing and recruiting firms need to do to start the year off strong. The Five Steps to A Strong Start To A New Year Not everything is going to be easy and starting off the new year in the staffing and recruiting industry is one of them. Wilson and Samantha Cole’s podcast details the best ways someone in the industry can push forward and succeed in the new year. Recheck Your Credit Rechecking someone’s credit is essential to early success. You may have checked one person’s credit several months ago, but you’re assured that there are possibly many more than that over the last ten years you’ve been in business. Make sure that they’re still in good credit standing and are still a viable entity before doing business with them. Confirm You Have the Paperwork Needless to say that having the paperwork is important regardless of what you’re after. Make sure that you have the signed agreements if you are the one doing the staffing. This lets you catch problems before they even rear their ugly heads. Sequential Follow Ups or Emails For Your AR These sequential follow ups or emails are great for a number of reasons. The first is that it reminds your clients that they still owe you, or they still need to do something for you. The second is that it reminds them that they can’t put it off or they can risk getting sued. Make one for fourteen days behind, twenty five days behind and finally one at thirty five days behind to remind people that they’re behind schedule. Make Sure that People That Signed Your Contracts are Still Working There This might sound strange, as contracts are still valid even if the person you dealt with is no longer working at the company you dealt with. Despite this, having a point of contact in the company you’re interested in is a vital asset that you can use. This is because if that person is no longer working there, the company can make excuses that they haven’t dealt with you before. Get Updated Contracts Checking and updating contracts is a great way to start the year off strong. Do some spring cleaning and add in or take out things from your contract. If the person you’ve been dealing with at a company decides to part ways with them, then try to get a new updated contract. This is especially true if it was a personal guarantee from a CFO who has parted ways with the company. Cleaning up your contracts is an excellent way to life easier for you in the long run. Quotes - Having a point of contact in the company you’re interested in is a vital asset that you can use - Do some spring cleaning and add in or take out things from your contract
Cohousing originated in Denmark in the 1960s. Today some 50,000 people in Denmark are cohousing. In Canada, we have less than 20 cohousing projects and they are mainly in BC. There are however over 150 such projects in the US (and maybe more now). Building communities and avoiding loneliness is something we all need to address as a society and cohousing definitely helps. Today, our guest is Grace Kim. Grace is an architect with over 20 years of experience under her belt. She is also an internationally recognised expert in cohousing. Grade had a great TED Talk where she talked about how cohousing can make people happier (and live longer). Topics: What cohousing is What makes cohousing different from a traditional condominium or single family home development The benefits of cohousing How some people approach cohousing The biggest reason people don't prefer it How cohousing helps people to live more happily What we can do to share the message about choosing How seniors can be supported in cohousing What the mode of communication will be The pros and cons of cohousing What she does on her spare time Quotes: "Having a strong social connections and strong relationships are the most important things that would help longevity of life." Special Guest Kim Dillon is the Community Relations Coordinator at WorkLink, an employment centre with locations in Langford and Sooke here in Greater Victoria. Conducting yourself in a professional way – in person and online. 13:00 A few transferrable skills that military-connected family members can highlight. How to fully populate your LinkedIn account. In this week’s episode we cover chapters 12-15 of Genesis. We discuss the beginning of God creating a people for himself through Abram and his family. We look at the call to Abram, the covenant that God makes with him, and how these point us to Jesus. We see that the call to Abram, to have absolute confidence in God, is the same call for us today. We continue to see the repeating themes of how taking our eyes off God can lead to sin, and God reminding His people of that creation mandate - to be fruitful and to have dominion. Quotes: “Having dealt in judgement at Babel, God now deals in grace. This has been and will always be true of God’s dealings. According to His infinite wisdom, judgement only serves to prepare the way for greater manifestations of His redeeming love.” - Gleanings from Genesis “God’s purpose to give his creatures all they need to fulfill their lives in His creation as He intends for them” - Drama of Scripture “The second you take your eyes off and put them on your circumstances your going to think, ‘I have got to fix this’. Forgetting the fact you are in the hands of the only one who has control over it.” “His ability to fulfill his promises, even when we royally mess up, is true.” “Faith doesn’t stop with belief. It’s accompanied with obedience. It’s resting in who God is and then acting from that place.” “Our faith does not lie in our obedience but in who God is.” “Our insecurities, fears, and doubts can never be banished by the knowledge of who we are. They can only be banished by the knowledge of I AM.” - Jen Wilkin Resources: The Gospel of Genesis 13 The Drama of Scripture Gleanings in Genesis by A.W.
