I meet a lot of very hard working people on this podcast and Donal Skehan must be up there with one of the hardest working of them all. He's a true grafter and someone I really admire. After spending years in the music industry, and with a couple of Irish number 1s under his belt, Donal followed his lifelong passion for food and created a remarkable career for himself in that world. He has over 11 cookbooks, countless TV shows, a meal planning web platform (donalskitchen.com), a collab with Dunnes Stores and many others strings to his bow.And on top of all that, Donal has recently become embroiled in a wonderfully frivolous and entertaining Eurosong feud, involving contenstent Samantha Mumba, and his fellow judges Laura Fox, Arthur Gourounlian and Bambi Thug. It has been described by comedian Joanne McNally as the “showbiz feud Ireland needs and deserves”, and personally I'd have to agree with her. Today, I'm delighted to welcome Laura Fox to the show. Laura is a risk management professional and the founder of Canary Risk, a firm that helps clients with outsourced risk management and to navigate uncertainty. Canary Risk is a relatively new firm, and Laura took her own personal and professional risks to set it up, so we obviously talk about that. We also cover the state of the risk profession, hiring, cognitive diversity, values, and so much more. Laura's enthusiasm, her curiosity, courage, and authenticity come through so well in this conversation, and my favourite part is towards the end when she talks about her own decision-making approach in deciding to set up Canary Risk. And I won't say too much here because I want you to listen to it, other than to say that it's a powerful reminder that in order to make quality decisions, we need to have clarity about what's It's important to us. Professor Laura Fox is the Douglas M. Costle Chair in Environmental Law and Director of the Farmed Animal Advocacy Clinic at Vermont Law & Graduate School. In 2018, California voters approved Proposition 12, which prohibits the sale of pork, eggs, and veal from animals that were raised in extreme confinement and unsanitary conditions, regardless of where they were raised (in California or elsewhere). Groups with farming interests challenged this law. Recently, the Supreme Court rejected the challenge, upholding Proposition 12. Professor Fox and I discuss the implications of this decision on animal welfare in the future, its food safety and public health effects, how her work fits in with her long-term veganism, and more.
This week Oliver interviews Caroline Sampanaro, Head of Micromobility and Transit Policy at Lyft, about her role and opportunities for micromobility to participate in conversations about better transport systems and cities. They also talk a lot about the shared business model, and why PPP feels like the most logical endpoint for a lot of the shared use cases for micromobility. We have continually been struck by the great team that Lyft has built - check out our earlier conversations with Laura Fox, GM of Citibike in NY for reference - and we really enjoyed this conversation with Caroline. Also referenced is episode 170 with Julia Thayne DeMourdant and Gabe Klein, which you can listen to here. Unfortunately, we lost the end of the audio for this the first time around and had to go back and rerecord the end. Our awesome editor Lynda has managed to get this sounding good, but just a heads up about it towards the end. In this episode they discuss: - Caroline's background as an activist and how it led her to shared micromobility policy - The story of Lyft's micromobility business - how it came about and why they've chosen the strategy they have with PPP docked bikeshare vs freefloating. - Getting micromobility away from identity politics - What has electric vs. acoustic offered to the advocacy conversation? - What is the role of companies like Lyft in micromobility advocacy vs. (for example) vehicle producers etc. - How do we get a broad coalition of advocates that can tackle the status quo? If you want to see the latest vehicles and be in the most cutting-edge conversations about micromobility, you should check out Micromobility Europe, our premier event happening in Amsterdam on the 8/9th of June. We're expecting over 1000 of the top thinkers and doers in the micro space to be there and I am pumped with the amazing vehicles that are coming down the pipe that will be there. We're expecting over 60 companies to be pitching in our Startup Awards too. It's going to be epic. If you're interested in joining, get your tickets at micromobility.io. This week Oliver interviews Laura Fox, General Manager of the Citi Bike bike sharing service in New York, and Senior Director of Lyft Bikes. This podcast was also released on our sister podcast project, Infinite Block.Laura has a very deep background and thinking about the future of cities, not only in an operational sense - running a Micromobility firm, before that working for Sidewalk Labs for Google and working with former world bank urban economist, with whom she edited one of Oliver's favourite books on urban economics “Order Without Design.” In this episode, Laura talks with Oliver about the implications of Micromobility on the city and also new forces calling upon her background at Sidewalk Labs, and consulting on the interplay of regulations and housing supply in Mexico City with Alain Bertaud. In this weeks episode, they talk specifically about:- How Citi Bike is a novel means of accessing high performance city vehicles, but it's highly dependent on government interventions for things like street space, allocation and funding. What would happen if NYC voted in a new council that took Citi Bike very seriously as a transport option? - Laura reflects on her time at Sidewalk Labs: What went well, and whether their new focus on software enabled tools is a step down. - A city often builds up complex regulations over time, and that deregulation, especially around things like zoning and building codes (for example in Mexico) can unlock cities to be more responsive to their citizens. Oliver and Laura discuss how this can be achieved. - Where are there cities who are not as fast at responding to tech advances, and how the process can be accelerated. - How we can trust in governance in an age of quicker change, and what countries are doing this well.- Whether there have been any alternative methods for infrastructure funding that have been successful. Check out Citi Bike and their developments within New York right hereOur sponsor for this episode is Joyride.

by Ed Shanaphy, USPTA, CMAA Kate Cole and Laura Fox are the Instagram influencers creating a social media storm for women tennis players. Kate's Instagram account, which focuses on tennis, cocktails, fitness and how she makes time for all that around motherhood, has over 1,600 followers. Laura Fox, known as The Tennis Fox, is renowned for her outfits and has been entertaining the enormous group of tennis-playing women and mothers across the country and around the globe with her daily posts on social media. Laura Fox is The Tennis Fox on Instagram. Both have been approached by brands to influence their clubs, their facilities, their teammates and their followers. Laura, having been approached by major brands, has found paid influencing unfulfilling, But both women have found the conversations, through comments and direct messages on Instagram, as a wonderful addition to their play and have enjoyed building a community around their tennis games through Instagram. Setting Goals Through Adult Tennis Once in motherhood, you don't have business goals, and these women are setting goals for themselves as they would have done had they remained in the working world rather than taking on the enormous task of motherhood. “When you have kids, you're not going to see the fruits of your labors for years…” and Laura says that she has found a way to replace those work goals with her tennis game. Kate, moving often as her husband is in the Navy, uses tennis as an outlet for her hectic lifestyle. As a ranked junior, she is now experiencing what she feels the game is all about – being social. Unfortunately, as a junior tournament player, she hadn't truly enjoyed the game, looking at it more as a task on the weekends, rather than a sport for a lifetime. Team Tennis: Upfront Financial Commitment or Pay-As-You-Go? Which Methods Works Best For Women's Teams? Kate Cole is tenniscocktailsandmotherhood on Instagram These two women face the challenges that most amateur players face - how to raise their USTA NTRP rating and how to deal with team polics. Clubs and facilities struggle with team selection and how to best monetize interclub play. Laura, who has played under two varied versions of team play at two different facilities, noticed that the higher ranked the player, the less often show up for clinic. Is it because they can keep their position by not showing up and hiding their true level of play? We shall never know, as Laura has moved on from that club to a facility that requires prepayment for the entire season. Every Club Should Have A Nineteenth Hole Golfers are famous for re-living, stroke-by-stroke, their round in the clubhouse after walking off the eighteenth green. Laura bemoans that this is not always the case in tennis. Instagram provides that opportunity to Laura to publicize her match and serves as her post-match debriefing. Unlike at her previous club, her present facility is focused more on tennis than on the social side, and she has turned to Instagram to bring together a community of people. As an influencer through her clothes and tennis outfits, Laura was influencing long before she was an Instagram influencer. But it's truly interesting to understand how she relives her winners and her unforced errors on Instagram on a daily basis. Perhaps Instagram is the new Nineteenth Hole Café. Kate simply hopes that her Instagram page inspires others to get fit and play tennis. It's a social sounding board for her as she moves around the world as the matron of a service family. But, somehow she finds the time to make her reels engaging, educational and just plain fun. "I like to hope that I can inspire others to get more fit." Well, Kate and Laura are inspirational and educational for all of us in the country club and tennis industry. Their views, their dislikes, their loves and their fears are all shared on Instagram and those are born on the courts and on the gym floor every day.

On this episode of the Animal Law Podcast, I speak with Laura Fox and Daniel Wiener about The Humane Society of the United States v. United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, in which animal advocacy groups are taking on the USDA's plans for what to do to the chickens who, trapped in factory farms, inevitably come down with bird flu, endangering humans as well as birds with a potential pandemic. After the USDA virtually ignored the suggestion that the birds should be kept in less crowded and less brutal surroundings as a way to possibly avoid such an outbreak, the agency instead decided the birds' ventilation should be shut off so they can slowly die a horrible death. Oh, and the "farmers" will be compensated by taxpayers for their losses. The horrors visited upon animals seem to keep getting worse, but at least a recent standing decision in US District Court in California will let the case proceed and the courts will have an opportunity to decide whether they have finally just gone too far. Laura Fox joined the Humane Society of the United States' Animal Protection Law department in 2015 as an attorney focusing on issues related to puppy mills, and now is the Staff Attorney for Farm Animal Protection working on efforts to reduce extreme confinement practices and challenging their environmental impacts. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Animal Law at George Mason's Scalia Law School. Daniel Wiener is an associate in the Litigation practice of Shearman and Sterling.

On this episode of the Animal Law Podcast, I welcome Laura Fox, Staff Attorney for Farm Animal Protection at The Humane Society of the United States, to talk about the 4th Circuit's decision in McKiver v Murphy Brown, which has created quite a stir in the animal law world. It is a story which we have all heard before -- neighbors of pig factory farms in North Carolina whose homes, some of which have been in their families for generations, have been rendered close to uninhabitable by the stench and degradation of the environment caused by nearby pig factory farms. The reason that this case stands out in particular for animal advocates is the extraordinary concurrence by Judge James Harvie Wilkinson III, which not only finds merit in the plaintiffs' arguments, but sympathizes with the animals whose misery and confinement are not only horrific, but are part and parcel of the harms created by these facilities. You are not going to want to miss this episode. Laura Fox joined HSUS’s Animal Protection Law department in 2015 as an attorney focusing on issues related to puppy mills and now is the Staff Attorney for Farm Animal Protection. Laura works to protect farm animals from the industrialized practices of factory farms, including by reducing extreme confinement practices and challenging their environmental impacts. A large aspect of Laura’s work is spent filing complaints with federal and state agencies and litigating issues arising under the National Environmental Policy Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and other federal statutes, as well as litigating consumer protection cases at the state level. Laura is also an Adjunct Professor of Animal Law at George Mason’s law school and has taught courses in philosophy and ethics.

On this episode of the Real Rebel Podcast Band of Rebels edition, we're featuring RRP Crew members Laura Fox, Amanda Gangoso, and Kiley Redhead. The question we are posing today is "When do you feel most like yourself? What do you do when you feel disconnected?"The Band of Rebels series was designed to act as a platform for the voices of the RRP Community. So often we listen to a podcast and don't ever connect with fellow listeners. We also live in a world where we're judged by the number of followers we have. Often times we only end up hearing the wisdom and voices of those who have large social followings. This isn't to say those humans are lovely humans, I just feel it's important to branch out. Just because someone has 10 followers doesn't mean they don't know some good sh*t worth sharing. I firmly believe that we all have a deep inner-wisdom, regardless of the number of followers we have to our name. The Band of Rebels series puts the mic in the hands of people you might not otherwise hear from while simultaneously connects you lovely listeners with other listeners whose wisdom might just be the remedy you needed. Lots of love! Your Host - Katie B
In this episode I chat to Laura Fox who is wonderfully quirky and a self-proclaimed weird one. She shares her unique combination of energy medicine gifts including reiki, coaching and light language. She helps people remember who they are. She believes we all have our own light to shine with unique gifts to give to the world and everything is already inside of us. She shares her personal journey through a very dark time where she contemplated ending her own life, all because she was not living her truth and trying to be someone else. This dark moment was also combined with a serious medical wake up call and started her on a healing journey, both physical and emotional. She also shares her plant medicine experience with ayahuasca and how she was shown her gifts and clarified her purpose.
