Today's workplace is at a crossroads, and effective leaders need to know how to navigate through change, challenge and chaos.  Inspiring hope is the best way to impact meaningful change, and today's guest is an expert on the topic of hope. In this episode of The Forward Thinking podcast, host Stephanie Barton, VP of Marketing and Communications at FCCS sits down with executive coach and leadership expert Libby Gill. Together they discuss the power of hope, the inspiration leaders need to offer, and the importance of effective communication when navigating a team through times of challenge and change.    Episode Insights Include:   Leading with Hope Theory Hope theory examines your agency and pathways to a goal and determines your confidence level in executing change.  Science is the key driver behind this theory.  Hope offers improved health, finances, and mortality rates.  When leaders role model hope, entire organizations are lifted up.  Leaders have to teach, coach and model the growth mindset.    Finding greater purpose in work  When you connect people with the end goal, you increase their vision and purpose.  People who recognize that they are solving problems are more successful in their work.  It is the responsibility of leaders to connect the dots between people and purpose.    Overcoming the challenges of change Change is constant and increasing- the rate of change right now is probably the slowest it will ever be again.  The belief that change is possible is the first step.  A growth mindset is essential to effective change.  The habits that we subscribe to might need to be altered in order to make effective change.  Include more voices in communicating needed change.    Creating more effective communication  Leaders can't really over-communicate to their teams.  Shout-outs and positive feedback are a great way to improve communication.  Ask employees what kind of communication they prefer and switch it up between email, video, and in person.  Employees want to know what's in it for them.    Tactics for embracing change Frame change as an actionable process that has a clear path.  Limit the change time period to 12-18 months to limit overwhelm.  Breakdown action items into smaller steps for an easier approach.  Reflect on what needs to happen on your team and if what you are focusing on will get you there.    Discover your leadership superpower Consider what you already bring to the table with your virtues and talents.  Great leaders know what they are great at.  Leaders need to be known for what they are great at and communicate it with others.  Leaders ask for feedback and implement change afterward.    This podcast is powered by FCCS.   Resources   Learn more about the FCCS Farm Credit Sales Leader Conference- https://www.fccsconsulting.com/conferences/sales-leaders-conference   Connect with Libby Gill - Libby Gill   Get in touch   info@fccsconsulting.com

After a decades-long career advising leaders in some of the largest companies in America and beyond, Dr. Gena Cox concluded that the pace of workplace inclusion change was unacceptably slow. She harnessed her organizational psychology and executive coach insights, her understanding of c-suite dynamics, and her personal workplace experiences to write a book, ‘Leading Inclusion'. Her book helps leaders connect unfamiliar dots to drive inclusion from the top of their organizations. Gena asks her clients to remember one simple idea: “Inclusion tops diversity!”Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:Gena Cox's childhood in Barbados before moving to the United StatesWhat events spurred Gena to write her bookHow personal revelations drove her writingWhat behavioral-based leadership meansWhy inclusion is more vital than diversityThe difference between a passive and an active leaderThe meaning behind Gena's acronym REDITwo pieces of terminology Gena uses to describe effective leadershipGena's thoughts on positive leadership trends moving forwardGena's favorite chapter in her book ‘Leading Inclusion'In this episode…Dr. Gena Cox is a corporate advisor and executive coach who recently authored a book titled “Leading Inclusion”. Along with her professional coaching certification, Gena holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr. Cox works to set the standard for building inclusive work environments, the ones everyone deserves. The events of 2020 involving Ahmed Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd proved a trigger point for Dr. Cox, affecting her profoundly, and leading to the writing of her book. She explains how the book is composed of insights and experiences she's had for decades, driven by a new desire to work towards solutions to the events engulfing the country. Inclusion, rather than diversity, is what Dr. Cox stresses and she breaks down the differences in the terms. We are so lucky to have such an enthralling guest join us this week. Libby speaks on the 3-step process: Clarify the vision for life (professional and personal), simplify the pathway for yourself (we clutter lives with things that don't matter), then execute! Personal branding. Even if you work for that big company- they have the logo and the brand, but who are you?! Yes, it is tough to try and promote yourself when you've never been visible. Whether it be analysis paralysis in saying “What will people think of me? They're going to think I'm bragging” or perhaps the old sales excuse of “I can promote anyone but myself!”. Become more confident in your expertise and realize that you have something to say. Everyone know that texting and driving is dangerous. But why is it so much more dangerous than driving and drinking coffee or driving and talking to a passenger or driving and tuning the radio? This episode starts with what turns out to be a very good answer to that question. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-05/uoh-ass050916.php Asking questions is important. So it stands to reason that asking better questions will help learn and connect even better according to journalist Warren Berger author of The Book of Beautiful Questions: The Powerful Questions That Will Help You Decide, Create, Connect, and Lead (https://amzn.to/2YI202R). Warren has studied the power of questions and after listening to what he says, you'll think more carefully about how you ask them. Women stare at attractive men just as men stare at attractive women. But when women do it, what are they looking at, specifically? What body parts stand out in women's minds? But if you'd ever worked in an office where people felt hopeless, you know that progress is not possible without it. Libby Gill believes that hope IS a strategy, and she uses research around hope theory to give her clients the discipline and competitive advantage necessary in today's rapidly changing world. Gill is an executive leadership coach, keynote speaker and bestselling author. After heading communications at media giants Universal, Sony and Turner Broadcasting, Gill left the corporate world to found Libby Gill & Company, a coaching and consulting firm focused on helping high-performing individuals and organizations navigate challenge and change. Gill's client roster includes Comcast, Disney, Honda, Microsoft, and Warner Brothers, among many others. She has appeared on CNN, NPR, and The Today Show, and Gill is the author of the award-winning YOU UNSTUCK. Her latest book, Hope IS a Strategy hits shelves April 10, 2018. Today, Gill shares her early achievement in the corporate world, explaining how a willingness to take on new challenges contributed to her success. She defines ‘riskophobia,' discussing how the predisposition for safety can hold us back personally and professionally. Gill speaks to hope theory and the need for hopefulness in the workplace to facilitate risk-taking and innovation. Listen in for Gill's insight on changing habits and staying hopeful with a daily meditation practice. Key Interview Takeaways Raise your hand. Gill attributes her corporate success to a willingness to take on new responsibilities and lean on her team. Even if you fail, you're not going to fall apart. Humans are hardwired to avoid danger, and we often give in to our predisposition for safety. But Gill contends that you need to get past the ‘riskophobia' and take on the next challenge. Hope is the jet fuel for life. Gill argues that hope is the missing link in the workforce, and she coaches leaders in building a sense of hopefulness that allows for risk-taking and innovation. It takes much longer than 21 days to form a habit. Research has determined that 66 days or longer is more accurate, and Gill suggests establishing a trigger that makes the new habit automatic—a hardwired part of our routine. Bring the entire team in on the coaching process. In Gill's work coaching leaders, she finds it useful to include the team in both identifying blind spots and recognizing behavior change. Stay hopeful with a daily meditation practice. Whether you choose to run, chant, pray or read, starting each day with the right tone helps you get past the fear, doubt and insecurity—and stay positive.
