POPULARITY
It's not a pretty truth of life, but we all argue with family, eventually. In fact, those arguments can be some of the most explosive moments of our lives. But why? Is it just that the folks closest to us know how to push our buttons? If so, how can we overcome that to grow? And grow alongside our family? Our guest today has a couple ideas. Cathy Carroll is the president and founder of Legacy Onward, a leadership coaching business dedicated to helping – you guessed it – family businesses. All those images I just conjured up, of fighting with your family: now add money, a lot of money, to the mix, and that's where Cathy operates. She even comes from a family business herself – rodeo equipment manufacturing. Today, Cathy's out with a new book, Hug of War, a real guide to navigating that tension between the good of the business and the good of the family. So what do we do when we're fighting with the people we love most? Is it possible, as Cathy claims, for both of us to be right? And if so… then what?
Lucy Heuschen is a British poet living in the countryside near Bonn, Germany with her family and rescue dog. She came back to reading and writing poetry after a twenty-year legal career and a life-changing breast cancer diagnosis in 2018. After her cancer treatment, in 2020 Lucy founded The Rainbow Poems, an online poetry community for anyone going through major life change. During the pandemic and the years afterwards, The Rainbow Poems hosted over 140 poets, from first-time writers to prize-winning poets. Lucy was also the Editor of the Sonnets for Shakespeare anthology, raising funds for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust during lockdown. She is the Poetry Society's Stanza Representative for Germany. Lucy's poems have appeared in The High Window, Ink Sweat & Tears, Obsessed With Pipework, Lighthouse, Skylight 47 and The Storms among many others. She loves anthologies for the community they foster and she has appeared in anthologies by Black Bough, Dreich, Sídhe Press, Orchard Lea, Yaffle and New Contexts. Lucy's debut pamphlet “We Wear The Crown” was published by Hedgehog Poetry Press in 2022 and her second, “Loggerheads” — the subject of this episode of A Thousand Shades of Green — won The Broken Spine's annual chapbook competition in 2023. “Loggerheads” will make its way into the world in late April 2024. Lucy's first full collection, bringing together her love of history, storytelling, family and feminism, is due to be published by Yaffle Press. Shamed by demonstrators as a “tree-killer,” Clayoquot Sound tree faller Bruce Hornidge faced soul-searing losses of identity and family livelihood. This gripping, irony-laden memoir of a life spent harvesting in the beauty of the forest deals frankly with the nearly invisible human fallout of the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy and the impact on one man's psyche.Hornidge recalls his career as a faller in the West Coast forestry industry from the unique and sometimes irreverent point of view of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers were cut short on the other side of the demonstrators' picket lines amid government and company doublespeak.Three decades after The War in the Woods, we think we know what happened, and we've been told why. Introduction • A few months ago I got an interesting text from Steve Walker. He said, “Hey, we're going to be going through Ephesians, and we want to know if you'll be up to preach.” • So I was like, “Yeah!” Texted him back. Absolutely. o I love Ephesians. I've been to Ephesus a couple times, maybe I'll be able to talk about some of the harbor there and the multinational city and the impact that had on the believers there. o Riot in the theater in Acts 19 and tie that into the book. The goddess Artemis. o Or maybe I'll get to say something about Apollos. I did a really cool study once on Apollos and Alexandria. Favorite. Acts 18 mentions that he was a Jew who grew up in Egypt and went to Ephesus to preach the gospel. It's really cool since that's where the Jewish philosopher Philo grew up. He was into rhetoric and there were a number of erudite schools in Alexandria. Apollos may have learned some of his rhetoric from Philo and taken it to Ephesus. Maybe I'll get to talk about that a bit! o Or maybe I can talk about Jews and Gentiles. Ephesians is all about unity between the two. My wife is Jewish, I'm not. I lived and taught in Israel for years…maybe I'll get to talk about that. • I got all excited, went home, turned to my passage in Eph 5:22 to see what I get to preach on. And these are the words I read: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” o OK, there goes Apollos, the theater, Jews/Gentile…“Wait that's the passage you give me?” o It's not exactly my first choice.
Pakistan's economy is in dire straits, its political and security situation volatile - and it is in a spot as India becomes more important to Washington. Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the biggest global talking points with expert guests. Former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan's arrest in May triggered riots as his supporters attacked installations and the headquarters of the Pakistan army which had once supported him. This came as the economy, hit last year by a massive flood disaster, is in the doldrums and awaiting a bailout. The Pakistani Taliban has also stepped up its attacks, and on the foreign front, India and the United States are deepening their relationship. Pakistan remains resilient, but not successful. Find out why, as Nirmal Ghosh hosts Mr Husain Haqqani, Pakistan‘s former ambassador to the US and currently diplomat-in-residence at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi, and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington. Highlights (click/tap above): 2:07 Why we must first understand the political layout and the military's role in Pakistan, a country of 230 million people and a nuclear power 4:30 Imran Khan's cult-like following; military wanted good relations with the US but Imran Khan had anti-American sentiments 9:15 How vulnerable is Pakistan? If they can't pass just make the test easier. That was the Education Ministry response to high failure rates in new High School literacy and numeracy tests. Documents obtained by RNZ show the Education Ministry and Qualifications Authority have been at loggerheads after the Education Ministry told the authority in October its design of the tests might have disadvantaged many students, contributing to a 66 percent failure rate in the writing test. The authority dismissed the ministry's fears and suggested the ministry was not respecting the authority's expertise. Education correspondent John Gerritsen spoke to Corin Dann.

Where does literature rub up against the rest of pop culture? This episode, of course! Liz is back for the third episode in a row alongside returning player Amy Brundle and newcomer Kendal for a bookish extravaganza! We'll talk frequently adapted authors in round one before a mashup round two game that somehow both confirms our biases and stretch our horizons. But in which direction? Find out, plus experience the customary round of lightning on this week's episode!Episode Notes
We've arrived! It's the season seven finale to determine the next super mondo champion of champions! Sure, this game opens with a round based on sweaty wordplay, with round two building into a series metatextual mashup clues that combine multiple mediums. And yes, it culminates in a lightning round where the leaderboard is constantly shifting. But this is the finals, darnit, so returning champs Liz, Derek, and Matthew are all operating at a very high level, so the competition cannot be more tense. I had to stop writing this episode description to go pat myself down with a cool wet towel just from recalling how intense everything got. And I'm working from home today, so I forgot to put on Old Spice, so now the sweat has really cooked up a nasty stench in my general vicinity. And when it comes to straight up B.O., I wouldn't necessarily say that everyone loves their own brand
It's the last of our divisional finals! Who will be the third contestant to advance to the season championship match? Will it be Rob? Or Scott? Or Liz? Or maybe a fourth contestant will crash the record, chloroform the other contestants and stroll to a leisurely, unfulfilling victory leading to record low ratings that will, in short order, doom the podcast? Only one way to find out; ask a friend who listens. Episode Notes
The season seven playoffs roll on as Ross, Jon, and Derek square off to determine the winner of the Monster Division. We'll take a trip back in time to the community sports programs of our youths before going even further back in time to quiz about pop culture portrayals of Albert Einstein. They'll make you say "Yahoo!" Seriously. Round two asks our players to name pop culture properties based on the titles of the fictional books found within them. All of that, plus the customary but nonetheless vibrant and exciting, lightning round! Episode Notes
Tanzania's Energy Minister Januari Makamba has joined Uganda's parliament in criticizing a European Union parliament resolution calling on the two countries to stop developing their oil and gas projects in the East African region. He told the BBC that Tanzania like many other countries in the world is entitled to use its resources the same way industrialized countries do for their people. The EU parliament resolution passed warned of human rights abuses and the social and environmental risk posed by the Eacop project. Uganda's Deputy Speaker criticized the resolution, describing it as based on misinformation and deliberate misrepresentation of key facts on environment and human rights protection.
After last episode's delightful diversion, we have arrived at the season seven playoffs. This week, Matthew, Dan, and Tim are all keen to become the winner of the Chronic Town division, but only ONE can do so, and advance to the season finale. In round one, we'll look at famous non-fiction books that have been adapted into scripted Hollywood movies, before going in the television wayback machine to mashup famous shows' pilot episodes that aired on the same day. If you haven't yet, listen to S11 E34 Loggerheads (Part 1) In this episode, the dogs pick up where they left off last time (0:25). Mike clarifies when he thinks control is appropriate in a leadership position (2:50) and Rob proposes that control, when it's properly used, can be a training in the virtues (12:53). Rob shares an “anointed moment”, which was ultimately born out of being fully prepared (15:25). Connor makes a distinction between controlling others and self-control (17:35) and Mike admits that his parents' use of control ultimately helped him choose the “good” (20:30). Rob closes out the episode with a question: “How do you foster freedom?” (36:00). Quotes: “Leaders do have to control their people, but it's not a manipulation of free will because those people have freely consented to being commanded by someone else.” (Mike, 3:50) “When I walk outside, I'm taking your heart with me because we've built this relationship together.” (Connor on ideal relationships between parents and children, 9:00) “Ultimately, I revere the fact that you are a free individual and are not to be controlled.” (Connor, 10:48) "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." (Michael Scott, 27:36) "I put my pants on one leg at a time." (Rob, 27:46) "I jump into my pants." (Mike, 27:50) “A father provides an abundance for his children to enjoy” (Mike, 28:10) "My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours." In this episode, the dogs discuss the relationship between authority and control (3:30). Rob brings up the scrutiny readings from The Gospel of John (3:51). Quotes: “When you don't have authority you need to control people.” (Connor, 6:46) “In Heaven you get all the joy, but no control.” (Connor, 7:40) "So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11: 41- 43) “God never controls. His love is always serene. It is always chaste. It is always non-possessive, even though we might want it to be.” (Connor, 14:32) “You can't love without freedom.” (Connor, 14:51) “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7) "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.” (John 10:18) “Woah, Dad's here.” (Rob, 25:27) “God speaks us into being out of Love.” (Connor, 27:10) “I think when you grasp at things that are beyond your control, then you get in trouble. But when you are stewards of the good things that have been given to you, that's when you cooperate with the grace of God.” (Mike, 28:25) Media Mentions: Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)Art of Manliness Podcast #792: How Power CorruptsJesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead : John 11:1-45A Woman Caught in Adultery : John 8: 1-11Gospel of JohnC.S.
