Irish singer-songwriter Mark Geary left Ireland with a one-way ticket to New York and a heart full of hope over twenty years ago. There, in Sin-é cafe, Mark honed his craft and sang alongside the best of them, including the late Jeff Buckley. Time Out NY said, “His delicate songs about love and defiance recall Richard Thompson and John Lennon.” Geary has featured on bills with musicians as diverse as Glen Hansard, John Prine, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Coldplay and The Frames amongst others, plus extensive headlining tours in Europe, the US and Switzerland. He has composed the full score for three films - Loggerheads (2005), Steel City (2006) and Sons of Perdition (2010) - and has had many songs featured in films and TV programmes. In 2022, he completed a sell-out month-long residency in the new Little Whelan's in Dublin where, with his band, he welcomed special guests each week and personally curated the shows. 2023 saw Geary tour the north and central regions of Italy as well as Ireland, selling out Whelan's (upstairs), Couglan's, Phil Grimes (Co. Waterford) and Castle St. (Co. Mayo). His latest album, In The Time Of Locusts, was released in February 2024, and was recorded in his cottage in the forest with the help of Ruth O' Mahony Brady, Glen Hansard, Dave Hingerty, Dave and Karl Odlum. Following his acclaimed 2024 album, In The Time of Locusts (4 stars, The Irish Times), Antebellum is an intimate six-track EP bound with tender acoustic instrumentation and the familiar warmth of Geary's sincere vocals and reflective lyricism. Recalling, vulnerability and enduring hope, the EP reflects Geary's creative response to one of Ireland's stormiest New Year's on record. He says, “I stared out to a January of rain and cold and thought, ‘I need to get back to my desk'. If I stayed watching the news, or in a cycle of streaming shows, I'd crumble. I threw out my telly and set up a writing room by my bed. Tuned all my guitars and would jump out of bed and sing. These songs are what came of it: Fear, regret, love, romance, terror, and the weather forecast.” Navigating moments of reposeful contemplation to passages of trepidation, Geary reflects on the human condition within a more concentrated run time, where each track emerges as a resonant meditation on fear, love, regret, and hope. With six studio albums, three live albums and what will be his second ever EP release with Antebellum, writing, touring and live performance remain Geary' s lifeblood. Treating Antebellum with trademark Geary honesty, his lyrics slice right through to the core, revealing a life laid bare of human emotional frailty, failed relationships, tenderness, hurt, making amends, desire and parting. His treasured guitar collection is always close at hand, each set up in a different tuning and ready to capture any emotion.

Rivers State politics was once shaped largely by party structures and internal negotiations, but in recent weeks, public exchanges and political accusations have taken centre stage.Statements by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and responses from the All Progressives Congress, APC, have turned what might have been routine political disagreements into a full-blown war of words, raising fresh questions about loyalty, influence, and control of Rivers State's political space. On Nigeria Daily, we examine why Wike and the APC are at loggerheads, how this political standoff unfolded, and what it could mean for Rivers State politics as the country looks ahead to 2027.

What does it mean to be at loggerheads with reality?"If a person who is at loggerheads with reality possesses an artistic gift... he can transform his phantasies into artistic creations instead of symptoms."— Sigmund Freud, Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis (1910)In this episode of the Dash Arts Podcast, Artistic Director Josephine Burton dives into two powerful exhibitions that challenge how we understand women, art, and mental health:
It's not a pretty truth of life, but we all argue with family, eventually. In fact, those arguments can be some of the most explosive moments of our lives. But why? Is it just that the folks closest to us know how to push our buttons? If so, how can we overcome that to grow? And grow alongside our family? Our guest today has a couple ideas. Cathy Carroll is the president and founder of Legacy Onward, a leadership coaching business dedicated to helping – you guessed it – family businesses. All those images I just conjured up, of fighting with your family: now add money, a lot of money, to the mix, and that's where Cathy operates. She even comes from a family business herself – rodeo equipment manufacturing. Today, Cathy's out with a new book, Hug of War, a real guide to navigating that tension between the good of the business and the good of the family. So what do we do when we're fighting with the people we love most? Is it possible, as Cathy claims, for both of us to be right? And if so… then what?

Shamed by demonstrators as a “tree-killer,” Clayoquot Sound tree faller Bruce Hornidge faced soul-searing losses of identity and family livelihood. This gripping, irony-laden memoir of a life spent harvesting in the beauty of the forest deals frankly with the nearly invisible human fallout of the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy and the impact on one man's psyche.Hornidge recalls his career as a faller in the West Coast forestry industry from the unique and sometimes irreverent point of view of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers were cut short on the other side of the demonstrators' picket lines amid government and company doublespeak.Three decades after The War in the Woods, we think we know what happened, and we've been told why. Bruce Edward Hornidge was born in 1948 in Belleville, Ontario, an Air Force brat growing up where his father was stationed in Gimli, Manitoba, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Bruce finished school in 1967, joining his brother Brian at MacMillan Bloedel's Kennedy Lake logging division at Ucluelet on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. He was married on a very unusual snowy day in March 1973 and, with his wife, Minnie, raised two boys and a girl. He felled trees for twenty-six years. After losing his job in 1997, he became a security guard in Campbell River, Vancouver, and Vanderhoof, British Columbia. Bruce and his wife, now the Rev. Minnie Hornidge, live in Glen Williams, Ontario. There, Bruce gardens and knits. And writes. After more than two decades harvesting in the beauty of the forest, Hornidge was “loggershamed” as a “tree-killer” and faced soul-searing losses of identity and livelihood, part of the human fallout of the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy.Loggerheads is written from the unique, sometimes humorous, and even irreverent point of view of one of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers were cut short on the other side of the demonstrators' picket lines and government and company doublespeak. “In a three-week window, decades ago, I produced the bulk of this book in the form of a paper called ‘The Nightmare.' My goal was a story that is truthful, personal, and encompasses many of the issues in this complex problem,” Hornidge says.“Three decades after The War of the Woods, we know what happened, and we've been told why. There's a lot we were never told.” Endless Sky Books was founded by award-winning author and editor Edward Willett in 2023.http://endless-sky-books.com. Introduction • A few months ago I got an interesting text from Steve Walker. He said, “Hey, we're going to be going through Ephesians, and we want to know if you'll be up to preach.” • So I was like, “Yeah!” Texted him back. Absolutely. o I love Ephesians. I've been to Ephesus a couple times, maybe I'll be able to talk about some of the harbor there and the multinational city and the impact that had on the believers there. o Riot in the theater in Acts 19 and tie that into the book. The goddess Artemis. o Or maybe I'll get to say something about Apollos. I did a really cool study once on Apollos and Alexandria. Favorite. Acts 18 mentions that he was a Jew who grew up in Egypt and went to Ephesus to preach the gospel. It's really cool since that's where the Jewish philosopher Philo grew up. He was into rhetoric and there were a number of erudite schools in Alexandria. Apollos may have learned some of his rhetoric from Philo and taken it to Ephesus. Maybe I'll get to talk about that a bit! o Or maybe I can talk about Jews and Gentiles. Ephesians is all about unity between the two. My wife is Jewish, I'm not. I lived and taught in Israel for years…maybe I'll get to talk about that. • I got all excited, went home, turned to my passage in Eph 5:22 to see what I get to preach on. And these are the words I read: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” o OK, there goes Apollos, the theater, Jews/Gentile…“Wait that's the passage you give me?” o It's not exactly my first choice.

Documents obtained by RNZ show the Education Ministry and Qualifications Authority have been at loggerheads after the Education Ministry told the authority in October its design of the tests might have disadvantaged many students, contributing to a 66 percent failure rate in the writing test. The authority dismissed the ministry's fears and suggested the ministry was not respecting the authority's expertise. Education correspondent John Gerritsen spoke to Corin Dann.

Where does literature rub up against the rest of pop culture? This episode, of course! Liz is back for the third episode in a row alongside returning player Amy Brundle and newcomer Kendal for a bookish extravaganza! We'll talk frequently adapted authors in round one before a mashup round two game that somehow both confirms our biases and stretch our horizons. But in which direction? Find out, plus experience the customary round of lightning on this week's episode!Episode Notes
We've arrived! It's the season seven finale to determine the next super mondo champion of champions! Sure, this game opens with a round based on sweaty wordplay, with round two building into a series metatextual mashup clues that combine multiple mediums. And yes, it culminates in a lightning round where the leaderboard is constantly shifting. But this is the finals, darnit, so returning champs Liz, Derek, and Matthew are all operating at a very high level, so the competition cannot be more tense. I had to stop writing this episode description to go pat myself down with a cool wet towel just from recalling how intense everything got. And I'm working from home today, so I forgot to put on Old Spice, so now the sweat has really cooked up a nasty stench in my general vicinity. And when it comes to straight up B.O., I wouldn't necessarily say that everyone loves their own brand
It's the last of our divisional finals! Who will be the third contestant to advance to the season championship match? Will it be Rob? Or Scott? Or Liz? Or maybe a fourth contestant will crash the record, chloroform the other contestants and stroll to a leisurely, unfulfilling victory leading to record low ratings that will, in short order, doom the podcast? Only one way to find out; ask a friend who listens. Episode Notes
The season seven playoffs roll on as Ross, Jon, and Derek square off to determine the winner of the Monster Division. We'll take a trip back in time to the community sports programs of our youths before going even further back in time to quiz about pop culture portrayals of Albert Einstein. They'll make you say "Yahoo!" Seriously. Round two asks our players to name pop culture properties based on the titles of the fictional books found within them. All of that, plus the customary but nonetheless vibrant and exciting, lightning round! Episode Notes
After last episode's delightful diversion, we have arrived at the season seven playoffs. This week, Matthew, Dan, and Tim are all keen to become the winner of the Chronic Town division, but only ONE can do so, and advance to the season finale. In round one, we'll look at famous non-fiction books that have been adapted into scripted Hollywood movies, before going in the television wayback machine to mashup famous shows' pilot episodes that aired on the same day. And of course, it all comes down to the lightning round. Episode Notes
We're taking a break before the season seven playoffs for some very nerdy trivia with some special guests from the iFanboy podcast network! We were lucky enough to be joined by Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, and their recurring guest and science-expert Dr. Ryan Haupt for a match tailored just for them! After a trip to Amity for a game of My Champion, we'll quiz about the history of the use of the famous 'morphing' effect across the history of movies and TV. In round two, we'll go DEEP into comic book lore with a round about early versions of superheroes we know from movies and TV. All this, plus an epic lightning round!Episode Notes
The last regulation episode of the season is upon us! This week, Scott, Seth, and Diana compete for the last spot in the season seven playoffs in the third elimination match of the Vancouver Rehearsal Tapes division. On the docket this week are games about real life commercial products popping up in pop culture, as well as telling us how to get to Sesame Street with a quiz about the parodies they've employed. All this, plus a lightning round! Our next episode is a special with three special guests from the iFanboy podcast network, and we'll be back two Mondays after that for the season seven playoffs! Episode Notes
Deb, Derek, and last minute fill-in, returning player Adam are ready to flex their pop culture knowledge this week! Round one is a carbo-loaded extravaganza of pop culture properties that have all been breadified, before round two dives into the unnecessary backstories of iconic characters. And it's all capped off with an exciting lightning round! Episode Notes
