As AI continues to advance and integrate into our daily lives, can it truly be designed to align with our deepest human values and moral principles? They explore the concept of "intimate AI," a personalized guardian that attunes to individual biometrics and psychometrics, offering a protective and challenging presence. Win-Win with Liv Boeree

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2023 108:27

If you ever downloaded online videos since the year 2000, this man is who you should thank! This week I'm speaking with technologist and philosopher Jordan Hall (formerly Jordan Greenhall). Jordan was a founder of numerous early-internet companies including video codec company DivX. However, I got to know him through his contributions to a community known as “Game B”, which seeks to understand how human civilization can transform itself into a more sustainable, anti-rivalrous, win-win dynamic. Today's conversation is a philosophical and technical dive into the anthropological drivers of competition, complexity, centra and decentralization, and the role of AI in shaping a more Game B future.    JORDAN'S BIOGRAPHY: Jordan is now in his seventeenth year of building disruptive technology companies. First as an early employee crafting strategy and product for MP3.com, then at InterVU (acquired by Akamai) and then finally in 2000 launching and leading the online digital video revolution as founder and CEO of DivX. After somewhat successfully navigating two financial crises and an IPO (and going down in flames at Stage6), he left the helm at DivX to return his attention to the big picture. He tried his hand at capitalism – combining Angel investment at the sharp edge of the Schumpeter wave — with participation in a number of think tanks and institutes; most notably, the Aspen Institute and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five sweet years. This exposure led him to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world historical transition which will likely kill all of us (see Mad Max) but just might end in a truly amazing future (see Star Trek). Getting there is going to require many things of us – most notably a significant upgrade of our individual and collective capacity for thought and action.   CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction 01:26 Childhood Games & Competition 07:14 Evolutionary Reason for Positive Externalities when Competing 11:45 What is Game B 26:42 Cybernetic control structures and the Culture Wars 32:10 Capitalism and Communism as two sides of the same coin 35:03 Why Game A is self-terminating 53:10 How to move toward a Game B society 58:50 How individuals can move towards Game B 01:03:18 The Hyperconversation and Collective Insight 01:06:10 Creating the next Collective Intelligence 01:10:10 How to protect against bad actors 01:18:35 How to cultivate more of a Game B lifestyle 01:30:35 Mental resilience against doom and negativity 01:38:20 AI as a tool against Moloch 01:42:27 What's next?   RELEVANT LINKS: ♾️  The Game B Wiki ♾️  Jordan Hall's Blog ♾️  The Secrets of Our Success - Joseph Heinrich ♾️  Understanding the Blue Church ♾️  Collective Insight Practices - Bonnitta Roy ♾️  The Medium is the Message - Marshall Mcluhan   CREDITS: ♾️  Hosted by: Liv Boeree ♾️  Produced & Edited by: Raymond Wei ♾️  Audio Mix by: Keir Schmidt

The world seems just a bit crazier every single day right now. Luckily on this week’s show we have the guiding light of a brilliant thinker I’ve admired for years, Jordan Hall (formerly Jordan Greenhall). I first discovered Jordan after reading his Situational Assessment in 2017 and his essay On Sovereignty which was pivotal in my the maturation of my worldview. On the show we begin with my own challenge in transcending myopic preoccupation with personal growth for its own sake and how trying to live an epic story can interfere with our personal sovereignty. The interview is then interrupted and we are able to explore regaining our sovereignty in real time. We talk about epistemological humility as a way of navigating sense-making amidst strange phenomena like QAnan. We touch on Jordan’s ideas of the Blue Church and the Red Religion. Finally we look at the upcoming US election and how we might marshal and deploy our resources in an increasingly mad world. Jordan has been involved in many esteemed organizations including Harvard Law School, the Aspen Institute, and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five years. He co-founded DivX, Game B, and Neurohacker Collective with Daniel Schmachtenberger. I would highly recommend his essays on medium and his public talks. This is a heady conversation and so to better locate you my dear listeners, I begin by reading a section of his essay on Sovereignty that impacted me so much. He joined Jordan Greenhall, Tay Nguyen, Darrius Thompson, Jerome Rota and rode it through an IPO in 2006 and up to a marketcap of $1.1 billion. Interesting tidbits: DivX was started in a General Atomics building in UTC which was also in the same building as MP3.com and even after two IPOs and being acquired multiple times, there’s still original team members at the company 18 years later. Jason eventually moved on to found multiple companies with both wins and some failures. His latest venture Whiff.com with Paul Tran brings together a few different industries, including consumer packaged goods, online market influencer utilization, and taps into the biotech space in attempting to create customized scent sequencing for each person. Jason is also a prolific mentor and advisor to both startup founders and to students alike. If you imagine, lets just say a fighter, like a boxer. In the beginning, let’s imagine that our boxer’s poised. Meaning that he’s standing well balanced. That his ability to shift what he’s doing is actually very high. He can read and respond. And when he responds, the action that he takes keeps him in a position of being able to respond. My movement increases my ability to make better choices in the next moment. That’s what response means. Every choice you make has the characteristics of increasing your ability to make good choices in the next moment. Affiliate Disclosure  Who is Jordan Greenhall? Jordan Greenhall is the CEO of Neurohacker Collective and is now in his seventeenth year of building disruptive technology companies. Comics, science fiction, computers, too much TV and role-playing games led to a deep dive into contemporary philosophy (particularly the works of Gilles Deleuze and Manuel DeLanda), artificial intelligence and complex systems science in college. Jordan graduated from Texas A&M and  Harvard Law School where he spent time with Larry Lessig, Jonathan Zittrain and Cornel West examining the coevolution of human civilization and technology. In 1998, Jordan put all this stuff to use combining disruptive technology, movement building and a taste for going up against obsolete oligopolies. First as an early employee crafting strategy and product for MP3.com, then at InterVU (acquired by Akamai) and then finally in 2000 launching and leading the online digital video revolution as founder and CEO of DivX. After somewhat successfully navigating two financial crises and an IPO, he left the helm at DivX to return his attention to the big picture. Jordan participated in a number of think tanks and institutes; most notably, the Aspen Institute and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five sweet years. This exposure led him to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world-historical transition which will likely kill all of us (see Mad Max) but just might end in a truly amazing future (see Star Trek). Getting there is going to require many things of us – most notably a significant upgrade of our individual and collective capacity for thought and action. After one week on an early Neurohacker Collective stack, he was convinced about the power and potential of this new technology and joined Daniel Schmachtenberger and James Schmachtenberger to bring it to the world. What is Sovereignty? Sovereignty is an individual's capacity to respond to the world. The three elements of sovereignty are perception, sense-making and meaning-making, and action. Jordan defines sovereignty in his essay as, "It is the ability to be present to the world and to respond to the world — rather than to be overwhelmed or merely reactive. Sovereignty is to be a conscious agent." For additional information, listen to the podcast episode and read Jordan's essay, "On Sovereignty." Key Highlights on Sovereignty Why Jordan is excited about the election of Donald Trump What is sovereignty? The historical transition underway, the factors which could lead to an apocalyptic moment, and how it might end a utopian future Three key elements of sovereignty Where to start if you want build sovereignty How to scale from individual to collective sovereignty The role of blockchain in accomplishing global sovereignty Additional Resources on Sovereignty On Sovereignty by Jordan Greenhall  On Thinking and Simulated Thinking by Jordan Greenhall Jordan's YouTube Channel Jordan's Medium page Final Questions What are Jordan's top tricks to enhance cognition? I guess I hadn’t stopped to think that one reason why government seems so insane right now is that the “governing” they’re trying to manage across wealthy, huge institutionalized structures like music, media, money, pharma, education, transportation— are fast becoming super-decentralized. All of them are fast evolving due to a tectonic shift in control. In this way, Governments themselves are just another “Woolley Mammoth System” like them. Like it or not, their Ice Age is ending. We’ve all watched various forms of power-decay impact these systems. Have you stepped back and wondered where all this is headed? That’s not what I anticipated talking about with this week’s guest, Jordan Greenhall. I thought we were going to talk about Nootropics. That’s where we started but Jordan quickly aimed the conversation at the dead center of these trends. I was first made aware of Jordan and the Neurohacker Collective because some of his folks attended a podcast and dinner party for a show I did with “The Iceman” Wim Hof (co-hosted by author Chris Ryan). Jordan was one of the cofounders of DivX, was at mp3.com and the guy has been dabbling with a massive spectrum of things from philosophy to role-playing games. Most of his interests have come back to the co-evolution of human civilization and technology. Jordan has come to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world historical transition. As he puts it, it’s likely to kill us all (Mad Max) or see us in an amazing future (Star Trek). Either way, humans are going to need a significant upgrade. That’s what the Neurohacker Collective is focused on. They have a Nootropic called Qualia that’s gotten a lot of buzz (so to speak). I know for sure it felt like my brain got an upgrade and yours will too by the end of this awesome episode.

Available in Korea via SK Telecom, KT and LG Telecom, it will retail for approximately $700. Features include DivX, H. 264, MPEG4 and AC-3 support, version 2. 0 of the Haptic UI, T-DMB compatibility, a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation support among others. The first Flickr Friday lunch meetup of 2009 was held on the grounds of Iolani Palace. Two dozen local photographers gathered to talkstory, trade tips, and take pictures. Flickr Friday - January 2009 (FlipMino HD) from hawaii on Vimeo. I took video clips with my Flip MinoHD camera, and decided to also edit it entirely using the FlipShare software that comes with it. (I use a Mac, and would usually use Final Cut Express or iMovie.) It's not something I'm likely to repeat. The FlipShare software is very rudimentary, and best for connecting a few clips, and definitely becomes unwieldy with 30 clips like the set I used for this movie. There's a basic clip editor to set start and endpoints, but it requires to to save over or save a copy in order to use the edited clip. Also, all you've got are dissolve transitions and two title slides - one at the beginning, and one on the end. There are a handful of music loops, and I used one for this movie. But even set to be 'quieter than the video audio,' it's pretty overpowering. The one upside to using FlipShare to something like Final Cut Express or iMovie is that FlipShare works natively with the video format, resolution, and bitrate of the Flip MinoHD's clips. So the final movie retains all of the quality of the original clips (such as it is). The above is the embedded video player from Vimeo, one of the few online video hosts to serve up HD content. There is growing anxiety about the way labor is compensated in Web 2.0. The accepted model -- trading content in exchange for connectivity or experience -- is starting to strain, particularly as the commodity culture of user-generated content confronts the gift economy which has long characterized the participatory fan cultures of the web. The incentives which work to encourage participation in some spaces are alienating other groups and many are wondering what kinds of revenue sharing should or could exist when companies turn a profit based on the unpaid labor of their consumers. What do we know now about the "architecture of participation" (to borrow Kevin O'Reilly's formulation) that we didn't know a year ago? What have been the classic mistakes which Web 2.0 companies have made in their interactions with their customers? What do we gain by applying a theory of labor to think about the invisible work performed by fans and other consumers within the new media economy?
