On this episode, our good friend Kevin is that something and he shows us that life isn't about being some phony stuck up asshole, it's about being a fun loving taking life as it comes asshole. Hey gang, welcome back to The Nerd Blitz Book Club! In this debut episode of a special 3 part series, we're celebrating Christmas in the off-kilter style that only we can. This week sees us discussing a holiday themed Dan Shamble story, Naughty & Nice, which can be found in Working Stiff. Is a fallen Elf that loves the King an allegory for a rain forest? Is it unethical to microchip your boy dog child? Does one of us have an Andy kink? These questions and more are asked, pondered, and answered! So snuggle up to a cozy fire, grab yourself a copy of this story, put the kettle on for a nice cuppa, and follow along with us as we read and discuss the first of three holiday themed tales in this seasonally appropriate 8th series of The Nerd Blitz Book Club!
Hello, listeners! I've got a special surprise for you this week. I've been waiting to share this amazing conversation that I enjoyed earlier this summer with author Patrick Bringley, all about his fantastic book about his time as a guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His book, All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me, is out now. Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art every year. But only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. They're the guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits, keeping a watchful eye on the two million square foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamorous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought he'd be one of them. Then his older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer and he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life. So he quit The New Yorker and sought solace in the most beautiful place he knew. In the tradition of classic workplace memoirs like Lab Girl and Working Stiff, All The Beauty in the World is a surprising, inspiring portrait of a great museum, its hidden treasures, and the people who make it tick, by one of its most intimate observers. About the author: Patrick Bringley worked for ten years as a guard in the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to that, he worked in the editorial events office at The New Yorker magazine. He lives with his wife and children in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. All the Beauty in the World is his first book. A week is a long time in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and as the Stiff Bois return to discuss night 2 of Wrestle Kingdom 17, they go from questioning the direction of Okada in 2022 to spending 2 hours discussing the movement of the man's character and how it now positions him, and the company he represents, to confront the challenge of an upstart rival. This show, which is powered by a renewed excitement and enthusiasm for the product, is more a free form discussion regarding the NOAHvsNJPW show, the moments that mattered, the key matches, and the potential directions moving forward; as New Japan continues it's hot streak to start 2023. The bois also dedicate time to discussing the life and legacy of a true wholesome stiff boi in Jay Briscoe (who the wrestling community tragically lost this past week) who had a significant and deserved presence on the show. As always, follow us on twitter @weworkstiff or on Reddit /r/WeWorkStiff/ Listen. Like. Rate. Share. Review. Watch New Japan Pro Wrestling.

When Opioid Overdose is Treated as Murder, Who Gets Punished? (0:32)Guest: Morgan Godvin, Activist, Author of “My friend and I both took heroin. He overdosed. Why was I charged with his death?” Across the country, more and more opioid overdoses are being treated as murder. States are passing “homicide-by-overdose” laws and prosecutors are going after the people who supplied the drugs in the overdose death. So far, there's little evidence the approach is working to reduce overdose deaths. What it is doing is locking up people like Morgan Godvin, who was herself addicted to heroin when she sold her best friend some of her personal stash. Godvin's friend overdosed and she was sentenced to 5 years in prison for her role in his death. SpaceX's Massive Satellite Launch Plans Could Ruin Astronomy (19:17)Guest: James Lowenthal, Professor of Astronomy at Smith CollegeWithin a few years, SpaceX plans to have thousands and thousands of communications satellites orbiting Earth, providing high speed internet service to even the most remote locations. Cool idea a lot of people support. But as SpaceX has begun launching the first big batches of those satellites, an unexpected problem has emerged. They're starting to mess up the work of astronomers like James Lowenthal at Smith College. How the Salvation Army's Red Kettles Became a Christmas Icon (34:44)Guest: Diane Winston, Associate Professor and Knight Center Chair in Media & Religion, University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communication and JournalismThe Salvation Army bell-ringers are out in force with their red kettles, collecting donations for charity. Did you know the Salvation Army started out as a British evangelical church? So how did its bell-ringers become such an iconic, primarily American, Christmas-time tradition? Diane Winston wrote a book about it called “Red-Hot and Righteous: The Urban Religion of the Salvation Army.” Can Brands Be True Advocates for Social Issues? (49:06)Guest: Kim Sheehan, PhD, Professor of Advertising and Brand Responsibility, University of OregonWhen Dove soap touts body positivity, or Gillette makes a viral ad about toxic masculinity, or Burger King does a social media campaign about depression, what's your response? Maybe you doubt their sincerity because they are, after all, companies out to make a profit. Or, perhaps you're even more loyal when a brand embraces an issue you care about? Florida's Orange Plague (1:04:45)Guest: Michael Rogers, PhD, Director of the Citrus Research and Education Center, Professor of Entomology and Nematology, University of FloridaFor as long as most of us can remember, Florida has been synonymous with oranges. But a bacterial disease is driving Florida's citrus growers out of business. Thousands of farmers have quit in the decade since the disease arrived in America. Two-thirds of the factories that processed juice have shut down. The University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center is racing to find a solution that can save Florida oranges. The Body Never Lies: A Day in the Life of a Forensic Pathologist (1:21:15)Guest: Dr. Judy Melinek, Forensic Pathologist and Co-Author of “Working Stiff” and “First Cut”Even on TV, being a forensic pathologist is not glamorous. The CSI investigators suit up and collect evidence at the scene, but the forensic pathologist is the one who has to cut open the body and weigh the organs and deal with all the gore of an autopsy. Why does someone go for a job like that? Judy Melinek wrote a memoir about switching from surgery to forensic pathology. It's called “Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies and the Making of a Medical Examiner.”
JET and Nic discuss mass casualty incidents, the forensic pathologist's role, and the systems set up to approach them.

Dr. Judy Melinek is a forensic pathologist. Together with her husband, TJ Mitchel, she wrote a book about her first two years entitled: Working Stiff: 2 years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner. Judy was born in Jerusalem and emigrated to New York City at the age of 5, when her father was selected for a residency in psychiatry at the Albert Einstein Medical Center; she attended high school at an Orthodox yeshiva, where her mother headed the Hebrew language and literature department. After graduating from Harvard and UCLA medical school, she switched from a residency in surgery to forensic pathology when the former proved so exhausting that she once fainted at the end of a 36-hour shift. Her new field quickly fascinated Melinek, and the journals she kept during her training are what she and Mitchell eventually rewrote into what would become “Working Stiff.” The book documents in detail how, just two months into her residency in New York, Melinek became one of 30 doctors charged with trying to identify remains of victims of the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Over the course of many months, bodies arrived by ambulance, sometimes by the truckloads, in about 20,000 fragments, some only as small as a tooth. Jewish values always have informed Melenik's work. “Because of Judaism's incredible respect for the dead, I realize how important it is that what I do has meaning, and that we're not just doing autopsies to defile the body, even though some people accuse us of that,” she said. “We do our work with an incredible purpose — and an incredible amount of respect.” Judy Melenik's website: http://www.pathologyexpert.com/ Judy's book: Working Stiff
There are few entertainment pastimes quite like the world of professional wrestling. Fake? Not quite. Predetermined? Inarguably. Dangerous? Absolutely. So perhaps it’s time for Josh McCulloch to re-join Luck and Neil to discuss who from fiction they think would make the greatest professional wrestler of all time! McCulloch sings the praises of the lucha abilities of Hogwarts’ gamekeeper, Neil welcomes people to the greatest robot grappling federation in the ocean and Luck combines his wrestling knowledge with a certain vigilante’s very particular set of skills. Meanwhile, Wyatt’s plan comes to a head at the County Restaurant Awards ceremony as Thin Eric takes the fall and a life is lost in the unexpected wrinkle of a firefight between O’Driscoll & Flint and Wyatt’s employ.
