In this episode, we welcome Jason Redman to the show. He is a retired Navy SEAL (Teams 4 and 10), entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker. He is also the author of the memoir The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader and of the book Overcome: Crush Adversity with the Leadership Techniques of America's Toughest Warriors. On September 13th, 2007, he was caught in an ambush in Fallujah, Iraq where he was hit by eight rounds from automatic weapon fire. One of the rounds entered the right side of his face, entering his jaw and exiting through his nose. He managed to survive the attack and went viral during his recovery process for posting an anti-pity sign on the door of his hospital room. In this interview, we discuss what drew him to the military and specifically to the SEALs, how the darkest day of his life is probably not the one you would guess, whether it was harder to rebuild his credibility with his teammates after a leadership failure or rebuild his body after being shot, what was running through his head when he thought he was going to die, why he thinks that God gave him the strength to walk off of the battlefield after being wounded, where the motivation came from to write the sign that he hung on the door of his hospital room, how we can focus on leveling up regardless of our circumstances, and much more. Let's get into it… Episode notes and links HERE. Donate to support our mission of equipping men to push back darkness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I've forever had my paradigm shifted with a new category of attributes. What are attributes? They are inherent qualities you possess. We all do. And they inform everything we do. Here is the story. Rich Diviney spent 20 years as a Navy SEAL, completing more than a dozen overseas deployments, eleven in Iraq and Afghanistan. He went on to be intimately involved in a specialized SEAL selection process to look for elite performers amongst the already elite SEAL members. He found himself often surprised by which candidates washed out and which succeeded. So often someone with all the right skills would fail, while others he might have initially dismissed would turn out to be the best performers. This led Rich to research and discover hidden drivers of performance. Attributes which will often predict how we will perform, especially under pressure. I read through Rich's book, The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance. Then I took his Attributes quiz. We started off with what drove him to pursue being a Navy SEAL. Then discussed how attributes differ from skills, and in truth, eclipse them. Then we walked through all 25 attributes and I'm confident you'll hear brand new perspectives on attributes like courage, situational awareness, task switching, cunning and even narcissism which he says has a place in top performance. Again, I feel I have a whole new toolbox for understanding, predicting, and growing my own performance. This episode centers on Task number 06: Declare Your 'Done.' Where are your healthy boundaries? What will you accept and not accept? Integrity does get turned on and off. It is a simple, consistent condition. You need to find ways to respectfully decline requests from others, or you will never have the time to build the epic leadership role you were made for. Lead yourself first because true leadership is by example. Rob's guest today is Jason Redman, author of The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader and The Trident and Overcome. Jason notes, “When you talk about mistakes and messing up, there is this idea that as a leader, you are perfect, you are impervious to mistakes..it's not ture. Leaders make all kinds of mistakes.” The journey is how you mess up, figure it out and come back from it. We have terrible experiences, which are actually a give to us and we get an opportunity to learn from it. We have to get broken down to experience it. The change starts today. It starts with formulating a plan. Listen in for more details. Rob can be reached at Rob@imactactual.com

Jason set off on a whirlwind career, completing three deployments to South America where he conducted numerous Counter Drug missions throughout Colombia and Peru. He returned in December of 2000 to become an instructor for his SEAL Team's Basic Land Warfare block of training. Retired Navy SEAL and New York Times bestselling author Jason Redman divulges how to triumph over adversity using proven Special Operations habits and mindsets in his new book "Overcome: Crush Adversity with the Leadership Techniques of America's Toughest Warriors." Redman was horrifically wounded in Iraq in 2007 when he was shot at close range through the face and arm. After 40 surgeries, including extensive facial reconstruction and skin grafts, he came back from this experience stronger than ever -- despite carrying scars and injuries he will have for the rest of his life. Redman went on to launch two successful companies and speaks all over the country. His first book "The Trident: Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader" tells the story of his military life and recovery. Both books are available from all major on line retailers. Jason discusses lessons of ego/arrogance; humility, growth opportunities, and raising kids with host Jim Fausone.

I interview Bob Newman, SEAL, leader and avid cyclist. Since our time working together, Bob ascended through the enlisted ranks, was shot, and broke his neck cycling (just to name a couple). We discuss those things along with the usual dose of business, mindset, basic psychology. After the interview seemingly ends, we walk outside and begin to have a deep conversation. I asked Bob to come back into the studio to record. Somehow, I managed to delete most of his feed, so, what remains is my microphone picking up his words. In other words, the last 8 minutes or so, when Bob is speaking, will be quiet. He was kind enough to share his personal experience of how his marriage ended due to alcoholism.
Jason "Jay" Redman is a retired naval officer and US Navy SEAL. He also wrote the book The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader and his second book, Overcome: Crush Adversity With the Leadership Techniques of America's Toughest Warriors, available wherever books are sold December 10, 2019. But his story, while wildly heroic, is not without strife, setbacks and near death on a battlefield in Fallujah, Iraq 12 years ago the day of this release (September 13, 2007). But before that, he was almost stripped of his coveted and hard-earned SEAL Trident due to behavior and decisions that were controlled by overconfidence. In this thoughtful and humble conversation, Jay teaches us all about the power of humility and hard work, the necessity to "Get off the X" when you are amidst a "Life Ambush" (be it by gunfire, divorce, or financial disruption), and the potential for redemption after ANY disaster or misstep. In the words that he speaks, you will hear why the sign he posted from his hospital room in 2007 caught the attention of then-President George W. Bush, went viral, and inspired millions to this day. It is the honor of 10,000 "No"s to bring you this American Hero. SHOW NOTES: Growing up in a military family, (3:43). Over the past few weeks, we've talked to some incredible warriors with powerful stories and huge hearts. I've come up with three things that I'm going to do to help me develop a warrior's heart, and I hope you'll join me. I'm also going to challenge all of you to share how these Warriors have encouraged you: Create an Instagram story sharing how any of the guests I've had on my show have impacted you. Tag me: @theimpactmike Find mentors – Each of our guests developed strong relationships with mentors from an early age, and continue to cultivate those kinds of relationships to this very day. Mentors matter because they can accelerate your success, and they can do that in three ways: Showing you the path. Helping you understand and adapt to the environment. Quickly identifying opportunities and threats. Don't fall victim to the “comparison conundrum” – Each of our journeys is intensely personal, and it's because of that very fact that we need to fight the tendency to compare ourselves or our experiences to others. Comparison will do nothing but steal our joy. Here's how we can kick that habit to the curb: Choose to – because our choices are incredibly powerful. Develop greater self-awareness so we can easily identify situations that may cause us to compare ourselves or our experiences to others. Practice gratitude, because it kills negativity. Begin taking inventory of our skills. We all possess talents and strengths, and they don't have to be huge things. Embrace imperfection. Enjoy the journey! When you're fully present in the moment, you're able to enjoy the process of growth. Say NO to the comfort zone – You don't have to be the biggest person or the smartest person, but you do have to have what Jason Redman calls a “No Quit Attitude.” You must drive forward, find a way to accomplish your mission, reach your goal, and never quit. We all want to be confident, but the only way we can develop our confidence and grow is if we take action, try new things, embrace failure, and learn from it. It's only in the possibility for failure that you'll find the possibility for incredible amounts of success, growth, and development. In the next episode, we'll be starting The Creative Mindset Series, which will feature some incredibly talented artists and musicians from a variety of mediums. You'll learn a tremendous amount about entrepreneurship by hearing how they approach and deploy their craft on a daily basis. -- Previous episodes in The Warrior's Heart series: Ep. 82 – Revealing the Beauty of a Darker Soul – with Josh Mantz Ep. 83 – Overcoming Trauma & Finding Meaning in Suffering – with Josh Mantz Ep. 84 – A Warrior's Grit: Forging (and Reforging) a Navy SEAL Leader – with Jason Redman Ep. 85 – Lessons Learned at 45,000 Feet: The 1st Female F-14 Fighter Pilot – with Carey Lohrenz -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Jason Redman is a retired naval officer and U.S. Navy SEAL, and author of The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader. He shares the leadership and life lessons he learned in his business, SOF Spoken, and inspires wounded warriors to overcome with his nonprofit, Wounded Wear. The process of becoming a SEAL has changed over the years, but the ingredients that make up a good candidate remain the same. During that time, the military has spent a lot of time and money trying to figure out the difference between an individual who completes training and an individual who doesn't. Despite all that money, the attrition rate has stayed about the same since SEAL training started – about 75%. So why don't more people pass SEAL training? There's no one answer, but Jason believes it's a cultural problem – “As a nation, we are not allowing America's youth to grow up and encounter failure, and navigate their way through adversity on their own … that cultural shift is having a direct impact on the grit of this current generation.” Jason credits his own success to grit and tenacity. “I'm definitely not the smartest guy, the biggest guy, or the strongest guy … but I will drive forward, and I will never quit. It doesn't matter what you tell me – I will figure out a way to get there, and I think that is truly the key to success.” Jason sees people quitting way too easily in today's society, and that's a big problem because you don't grow when you're in your comfort zone. The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader In his book, Jason is extremely vulnerable and brutally honest about his journey – from not being accepted into the SEALs or Army on his first attempt to his first mistake as a military leader to getting struck by machine-gun fire at point-blank range – and how overcoming those challenges allowed him to grow into a more effective leader. SOF Spoken Jason founded SOF Spoken after retiring so that he could share the lessons and abilities learned by Special Operations Forces with leaders, entrepreneurs, and communicators, and the company is built on the idea that leadership is forged by experience in the most difficult moments. How can entrepreneurs apply these lessons? Tenacity is required – You have to believe in yourself and what you're doing. Sometimes this means understanding the difference between quitting and falling back. Communication is key – If everybody you work with is informed about what's going on, you foster better relationships and invite potentially critical feedback. Develop an overcome mindset – “Leaders figure out what they need to do, and they get it done … they evaluate what needs to get done, and then they put the steps in place and discipline themselves to accomplish it.” -- Resources: Learn more about Jason at SOFspoken.com Connect with Jason: Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | https://www.linkedin.com/company/sof-spoken/?trk=top_nav_home ( LinkedIn) | Instagram Pick up a signed copy of Jason's book: The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader Do you want to give back and sponsor a Wounded Warrior?
