Episode 269 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the hardwood discussing Nick Van Exel. After a tumultuous childhood & difficult stint in Junior College, Van Exel would then lead Cincinnati to a Final Four in 1992 and appeared to be a lottery pick headed into the 1993 NBA Draft. However, poor interviews and workouts sent his stock into the second round. Van Exel though was of the first post-“Showtime” era stars for the Lakers' during the 1990s. A slick, left-handed point guard who could shoot and distribute, Van Exel was an All-Star by his final season in Los Angeles. Issues with the team's new stars as well as the coaching staff led to his exit before the Lakers' dynasty of the 2000s. Nevertheless, Van Exel was a scoring machine with Denver & valuable bench player towards the end of his career. #sportspodcast #comedypodcast #lakers --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support

Lakers Beat Down Hawks 136-105 as Anthony Davis Returns, D'Angelo Russell Ties Franchise Record

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

On Monday, we discussed how the Lakers were entering a critical stretch of games that could make or break the quest to, at minimum, maintain the nine seed in the play-in standings, if not actually rise higher. Why? Because most of these games, starting with tonight's against Atlanta, are against bad opponents. Thus, it was critical to immediately bag a win. Well, 136-105 over the Hawks certainly fits that bill. Just as importantly, Anthony Davis returned to the lineup after leaving Saturday's loss to the Warriors with an eye injury. He'd been listed as questionable leading up to the game, and there had been some worries about whether, at minimum, he wouldn't be able to suit up for his one. Instead, he dominated to the tune of 22/15/6. In the meantime, D'Angelo Russell's 27 points featured six made threes, tying him with Nick Van Exel for the franchise's single season for record three-pointers. Throw in nice performances from LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves and Max Christie, and the Lakers cruised to victory. What to make it of all moving forward? Andy talks with special guest Claire de lune (@Clairempls), who covers the NBA for The Guardian. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, special guest Claire de lune. SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get an easy but critical win over the Hawks.   SEGMENT 2: D'Angelo Russell ties a Lakers franchise record, indicative of a storm he's weathered. SEGMENT 3: Claire has some issues with how the Lakers are covered in the national media. You know I can't resist a good Wilt Chamberlain stat around here, and this one from Bomani Jones sent me scrambling to Stathead, so you know it's a good one. That's pretty surprising, isn't it? That the seventh-leading scorer in NBA history doesn't hold any team's points record? But that's also been the case for a little under two years — it was April of 2021 when Steph Curry passed Chamberlain, who scored 17,783 points for the Dubs in five-and-a-half seasons.Chamberlain played 429 games for the Warriors, while Curry has appeared in 876 so far with the only NBA team he's ever been on.Here's the Warriors' all-time list of per-game scoring, with a minimum of 100 games played:Chamberlain (429 games) 41.5 ppgKevin Durant (208 games) 25.8Rick Barry (642 games) 25.6Curry (876 games and counting) 24.6World B. Free (162 games) 23.4So, you look at Chamberlain going from the Warriors back to Philadelphia with the 76ers in 1965, and his precipitous decline to… let's take a look at the 76ers' per list, where Hal Greer remains the all-time leading total scorer but “only” averaged 19.2 points per his 1,122 games (a total of 21,586), and still holds the record because those dummies traded Allen Iverson (19,931 points in 772 games)Chamberlain (277 games) 27.62 ppgIverson (722 games) 27.61 Joel Embiid (389 games and counting): 27.2Charles Barkley (610 games) 23.3Julius Erving (836 games) 22.0Chamberlain played his age 32-36 seasons for the Lakers, one of which was limited to 12 games — and he still led the NBA in rebounding each of his four healthy, if declining, seasons in Los Angeles (he only missed one other game the whole time). So, it's not surprising that Chamberlain isn't near the top of the Lakers' all-time scoring list, and in fact he's 24th with 5,985, a couple of spots above Nick Van Exel, who was pretty darn good in his five seasons with the Lakers. On a per-game basis, Chamberlain had 17.66 with the Lakers, which puts him between Pau Gasol (17.73) and James Worthy (17.62), in 15th all-time for the franchise. The Lakers' list? That's an interesting one, because the leader could very well play himself out of the top spot.LeBron James (271 games and counting) 27.42 ppgElgin Baylor (846 games) 27.36Shaquille O'Neal (514 games) 27.033Jerry West (932 games) 27.030Kobe Bryant (1,346 games) 25.0O'Neal and West being separated by three-thousandths of a point per game over their careers in Los Angeles, spanning more than 1,400 games between them, is out of control.Baseball season is coming, but we have a whole lot more basketball statistrata to work on here. At long last (or more specifically, 48 hours, the time it took to clear waivers), DeAndre Jordan officially signed his contract with the Lakers on Thursday, and did an introductory press conference. The most interesting aspects to the Kamenetzky Brothers weren't as much about the details he offered (although he did seem excited to compete and amiable towards whatever role is needed of him), but rather how he was asked questions that framed Lakers-Nets as a rivalry. It is... in the sense that these are the consensus picks to make the Finals, and the storylines are incredibly juicy fun. But it's also not, in the sense that there's no recent history to speak of whatsoever between these squads. In fact, they've barely even faced each. other in their current incarnations. From there, a listener question from John Smith (@boom_shaka), who asked which young Laker has the best chance of breaking out: Talen Horton-Tucker or Malik Monk? For the sake of variety, Kendrick Nunn was also included in the discussion, but in reality, on several fronts, the answer not only feels like THT, but really needs to be.And finally, with the Hall of Fame ceremony this weekend, the Kamenetzkys enjoy some "What if?" over inductee Chris Webber's recent comments that before getting traded to Sacramento in 1998, he'd been holding out hope of a move to the Lakers in exchange for Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, and Elden Campbell. Quardell's accolades include: First Team All-American, Reese's All Star Game, Player of the Year, All Defensive Team, Male Sportsmanship of the year award and many more. Q finished his career at Whitewater, 2nd in assists, 5th in steals, 9th in scoring and 10th in blocks which is incredible for a point guard. Deadly behind the arc and a great facilitator of the offense. Q discusses his upbringing in Kenosha, Wisconsin and what it was like hooping at Bradford High School. Also, discusses his signature buzzer beaters he frequently had in college. As well as what Q does in his free time. A must listen!

Nick the Quick showed UP for this week’s episode of Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles! The Lakers legend looks back on his Exel-lent career: From playing on Bobby Huggins’s tenacious Bearcats squad to bringing his flash to the Lakers, Nick Van Exel’s grind never stopped. He shares stories of what a kid named Kobe was like as a rookie and about that time the Lakers had four All-Stars on the same roster. That leads the guys into a discussion of stacked teams that just can’t seem to win. Nick gives credit to Steve Kerr, who showed up in that ’03 playoff series to send Nick and the Mavs home. He also breaks down the role of sixth man and makes it clear that real basketball players know that what really counts isn’t starting, it’s being on the floor in the last two minutes of the game — when it’s “winning time.” Darius and Nick reminisce on their Portland days together. Nick reveals that Nick the Quick is his favorite nickname simply because of who gave it to him. Tune in to hear the full basketball journey from our main man Nick Van Exel.

Between Julius Randle, Larry Nance, Jr., Brook Lopez, Luol Deng, Kyle Kuzma, Thomas Bryant and Ivica Zubac, Lakers head coach Luke Walton is going to have quite the minutes distribution dilemma on his hands. After discussing the reports that the Lakers were looking to add a director of player development, hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin dove into the jam-packed frontcourt situation in Los Angeles. The two debated how many minutes each player should get, who should and will be out of the rotation, and if the Lakers should or will trade any of their big men during the season on the latest episode of Locked on Lakers. Also, the ending featured Anthony’s reaction to Nick Van Exel making a prediction about a game of one-on-one between the two of them, so stick around for the final minutes. NBA All-Star, 11-year veteran & Slam Dunk Champion, Cedric Ceballos. Prior to delving into Cedric's on-court prowess, we talk about his love for music and the famous album, 'Basketball's Best Kept Secret', featuring Dana Barros and many others. Little-known fact: Cedric was a ball-boy at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Ceballos went on to star at Ventura College, before playing his junior and senior seasons at Cal State Fullerton - where he was scouted by Jerry West - averaging better than 22 points & 10 rebounds per game. Cedric discusses the 1990 NBA Draft, and his flurry of emotions, waiting to hear his name called. He was selected 48th overall, by the Phoenix Suns. Ced talks about his transition from college, and learning the game from veterans like Tom Chambers, Eddie Johnson & Dan Majerle. Our conversation also uncovers fascinating details behind Dee Brown's victory - punctuated by his memorable, pumping-up of the Reebok shoes, and 'Blind Dunk' - in the 1991 Slam Dunk Competition. Cedric won the 1992 contest, finishing with his famous 'Hocus Pocus' jam, dedicated to Magic Johnson. Few people know, that Cedric & Dee competed in a college dunk contest, at the Orlando All-Star Classic. 25 years later, prepare to hear the inside story that will change most of what you know about the history of the NBA's 1991 Dunk Contest. We break down the 1993 season. Paul Westphal was named as coach, the Suns traded for Charles Barkley and Cedric led the league in field-goal percentage (57.6). Phoenix steamrolled the league, en route to 62 wins and the number-one seed in the Playoffs. The Suns survived their first-round series against the upstart Lakers, with an overtime victory in the fifth and deciding game. Injury hit Cedric at the worst possible time. He broke his foot during the 1993 Western Conference Finals; missing the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls. He talks about the emotions of supporting his team from the sidelines. We cover Cedric's trade (September, 1994) from Phoenix to the L.A. Lakers, where he enjoyed NBA-career highs in scoring, rebounds and assists. Ceballos was named an All-Star, however, an incident with Dikembe Mutombo, days prior to the 1995 All-Star Game, led to Cedric missing the game due to injury. In a cruel twist of fate, Mutombo would receive his second All-Star nod. Magic Johnson returned to the NBA during the 1996 season. Cedric talks about co-captaining the Lakers with Nick Van Exel, the impact of Magic's return and how it felt to miss the opportunity to challenge for a title, playing alongside one of the all-time greats. Cedric appeared in the iconic movie, Space Jam. We talk about his memories of the experience and the effect it continues to have on his life. He also opens up about playing basketball inside The Jordan Dome - the purpose-built workout facility, constructed for Jordan's use, during downtime around the filming of the movie. During the 1997 season, Ceballos was traded back to Phoenix - the Suns were in turmoil, but Cedric and his (new) teammates turned the season around, steering the franchise into the Playoffs. In the 1998 season, Cedric was traded to Dallas. He talks about the challenges of playing for a franchise that was fighting for relevancy. He speaks fondly of former-teammate, (Australia's) Chris Anstey and a great victory the Mavs had over the rampaging Bulls, in March of 1998. After his time with the Mavericks, he closed out his NBA career with stops in Detroit and Miami. He then played in various leagues around the USA, became a member of the Harlem Globetrotters and also headed overseas to play professionally. You can follow Cedric online. Check him out on Twitter. After Rafael, both Jason and Rich present their three favorite NBA trade deadline deals including Gary Payton and Ray Allen swapping shades of green, the first-place Atlanta Hawks trading their leading scorer (Dominique Wilkins) for a few months of Danny Manning, Nick Van Exel going to the Mavericks among others.
