Movement has always been her medicine, helping her work through a slew of hurdles from a young age — from the loss of her sister at age 12 to — years later — disordered eating in college. Ash talks to me about her involvement in the pageant system and the influence that has had over her life, and we also chat about her big move from Louisiana to New York City, trading in her job in corporate America to take on the fitness industry — full steam ahead. Her vulnerability in our conversation is beautiful, her attitude is refreshing, and her honest advice on everything from following your gut to asking for help when you’re scared may be exactly what you want to hear. Nikki Metzger is not only a Nike Trainer, owner of her own gym here in Scottsdale, and the 2015 Women’s Health Magazine’s “Next Fitness Star,” but she is just an all around incredible human being. She’s super friendly and approachable but equally as disciplined, motivated and inspiring. It’s been amazing to see the culture and community that she’s been able to create at her gym, and to hear her story and everything that came before it. Some questions I ask are — "What would you say to someone who maybe wants to open a gym one day or start a business around their passion but they just don’t know where to start?" "What’s a mindset you have or a mantra that you always come back to when you’re dealing with adversity or something challenging?" "How can we maintain our mental health while pursuing our fitness goals?" I had such a great time on this podcast, so I really hope you enjoy this one as well, and I’m really looking forward to taking some more classes at her gym and surrounding myself with the contagious positive energy that she creates. Fitness is a multi-billion dollar industry, and like so many others there are disparities in who gets to engage as operators and influencers. Nike Pro Trainer Ernest Smith decided that he was going to set himself up to do well with his training business and also do some good by serving a range of clients in his community. As a public health degree holder he gets the intersection of community wellness and access to services, and is doing his part to help people live healthier lives. His journey to this point is inspiring, making him a great guest for us on the Junctional Thinking podcast.
