The Outcome Matters

The Mike Hartman Show

Send us Fan MailOne of the most common things people hear in sports, business, and personal development is, “Don't think about the outcome.”I understand why people say it. If you become obsessed with results, pressure can build quickly. You can lose focus, force things, and start worrying more about the future than what needs to happen right now.But I also believe something important gets missed when people say that. You need something to shoot for.You need vision. You need purpose. You need a target that inspires you to get out of bed in the morning and keep moving forward when things become difficult. When I was part of the New York Rangers, we absolutely thought about the outcome. From the first day of training camp, the goal was clear. We wanted to win the Stanley Cup.That vision mattered. It created belief inside the locker room. It gave players direction. It unified the team around a common purpose. Nobody walked into that season hoping to simply “see what happens.” We believed we could accomplish something special. But here is the key. After setting the goal, we put it aside. We did not wake up every day talking about lifting the Stanley Cup. We focused on what needed to happen that day. Practice. Conditioning. Recovery. Communication. Accountability. Film sessions. Competing in drills. Supporting teammates. Managing emotions. Preparing mentally and physically. The outcome gave us direction. The process gave us progress. That lesson applies to every part of life.So many people today either become obsessed with the result or they lose motivation because the result feels too far away. They focus so much on the future that they stop being present in the daily work that actually creates success.Championships are not built in one moment.Confidence is not built in one moment.Transformation is not built in one moment. It happens through consistent daily action. One workout at a time. One healthy decision at a time. One conversation at a time. One practice at a time. One choice at a time. The people who perform at a high level understand how to stay present while still keeping a larger vision in mind. They know how to separate goals from daily execution. That is where mindset becomes so important.Pressure often comes from living too far ahead mentally. You start worrying about whether you will succeed, fail, impress people, make money, win the championship, recover from adversity, or achieve your goals.Meanwhile, your power only exists in the present moment. The best athletes and performers are able to bring themselves back to the task directly in front of them. The next shift. The next meeting. The next rep.The next opportunity. That does not mean the goal disappears. The vision remains in the background as fuel and motivation. But your focus stays connected to preparation and execution. This is something I have seen repeatedly, both in sports and in life. The people who grow the most are usually the people who commit to the process without constantly needing immediate results. They trust the work. They understand that progress takes time. They know there will be setbacks, adversity, frustration, and moments where things do not go according to plan. But they continue showing up anyway. That is where real confidence comes from.Confidence is not just positive thinking. Confidence is built through preparation, repetition, resilience, and learning how to stay steady under pressure.Even during difficult moments on our Stanley Cup team, we did not panic and suddenly abandon the process. We trusted our preparation. We trusted each other. We trusted the work we had already put in.That mindset matters everywhere. In business, people often focus so much on the final goal that they burn themselves out chasing quick results. In health and fitness, people become discouraged because they do not see changes fast enough. In parenting, athletes, leadership, and personal growth, people sometimes expect overnight transformation. But meaningful growth rarely happens overnight. The process is where growth lives. The process teaches discipline. The process teaches patience. The process teaches resilience. The process teaches presence. And many times, when you fully commit yourself to the daily process, the outcome begins to take care of itself. That does not mean every goal will happen exactly the way you imagined. Life does not always work that way. But focusing on the process gives you the best possible opportunity to create success while also enjoying the journey along the way.At the end of the day, having a vision is important.Goals matter.Dreams matter.Outcomes matter. But after setting the goal, the challenge becomes learning how to return your attention back to the daily work required to get there.Stay present.Trust the process.Focus on what you can control.Keep showing up.That is how big goals eventually become reality.Discover the limitless potential of The Healthy Mindset Application (App) with our exclusive Application Assess, Educate, Coach approach. THE FIGHT I NEVER EXPECTED

THE FIGHT I NEVER EXPECTEDI'm sharing this story in hopes that it helps someone listen to their body, stop procrastinating, and realize how important health, relationships, and community truly are before it's too late.Three months ago, I went to New York City with my kids for the New York Rangers 100 year anniversary celebration. I was grateful to be included and reconnect with so many great people and memories. Just before all of this happened, I had the opportunity to speak to around 100 anesthesiologists and nurses about mindset, adversity, and perspective. At the time, I had no idea that only a short time later I would be in the hospital myself fighting through one of the biggest challenges of my life. Life can change fast. During the trip, I started feeling off physically, but honestly thought I was just exhausted or run down. Like many people, I tried to push through it and figured it would pass. When I got home, Cheryl could tell something was not right. She pushed me to go to the hospital and looking back now, Cheryl truly helped save my life along with Dr. T and the medical team. Doctors discovered a serious infection that turned into sepsis. Dr. T later told me that if I waited any longer, I may have only had a couple days left. The sepsis eventually spread to my mitral valve, which led to open heart surgery. Everything changed fast after that. I spent almost a month in the hospital. There were moments of fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and times where I could barely communicate. I ended up losing over 30 pounds during the process. After leaving the hospital, I spent another month at home recovering with a midline in my arm for six weeks while continuing treatment and focusing on getting stronger again. People always talk about mental toughness. I would love to tell you I was mentally strong every second through all of this, but that would not be true. What I learned is that sometimes mindset is what keeps you fighting when the body feels exhausted. One of the biggest reasons I'm sharing this story is because I want to help wake people up so they do not make the same mistake I did. Too many people push through symptoms. Too many people procrastinate. Too many people think they will be fine and ignore signs that something may really be wrong. I almost waited too long. If something feels off, get checked out. Do not keep putting it off thinking it will just pass. Listen to the people around you who care about you. This experience also taught me there is nothing weak about leaning on others when life gets hard. Cheryl, my kids, my mother, father, brother, sister, uncle, Marty, my doctors, nurses, close friends, former teammates, and so many others carried me through one of the toughest times of my life. My teammates continuously checked in on me throughout the entire experience with support, encouragement, prayers, and messages that meant more than I could ever explain. Mark Messier said it best when he told me, “You dodged a bullet this time.” That really stayed with me. There are honestly too many people to thank individually, but this experience reminded me how important community and relationships really are when life gets hard. Dr. T, Dr. Michaels, Dr. Harley, and all the nurses were unbelievable. Their care and support during this fight meant everything to me. Now, three months later, I'm back doing a lot of conditioning and working hard to get myself back into a healthy lifestyle and better shape again. Step by step, I'm rebuilding my strength, gaining my weight back, and continuing to recover. After everything that happened, I feel more than fortunate to have a second chance at life.Life threatening moments remove the noise. You stop worrying about small things. You become grateful for simple moments again. Being home. Quiet mornings. Coffee. Time with people you love. This experience changed my perspective on life, and maybe sharing it can help somebody else before it is too late. I'll continue sharing stories, experiences, and conversations around mindset, adversity, gratitude, health, relationships, and what really matters in life. Sometimes the hardest moments teach us the most. What would it take to fit a geothermal system into a 125-year-old Manhattan co-op — and what happens when you actually do it? Mike Richter spent two decades as one of the NHL's elite goaltenders, winning a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers. Now, as President of Brightcore Energy, he's applying the same discipline and focus to decarbonizing commercial buildings. On this episode of Age of Adoption, Richter breaks down why geothermal heating and cooling — long considered niche and prohibitively expensive — is finally hitting its stride. "If I'm a competitor of yours and my energy costs are 40 to 50% lower than yours, I'm eating your lunch," he says. Brightcore's turnkey model — integrating design, drilling, financing, and a 10-year performance guarantee — removes the friction that has kept geothermal on the sidelines for decades. Drawing on lessons from Scandinavia, where geothermal penetration tops 25% compared to less than 1% in North America, Richter argues the technology is commercially proven and deployment-ready. Mike Richter is President of Brightcore Energy, a turnkey clean energy firm serving commercial, institutional, and government clients across geothermal, solar, and energy efficiency solutions. Before entering the energy sector, Richter was one of the NHL's premier goaltenders for two decades, earning a Stanley Cup championship with the New York Rangers and representing the United States in multiple Olympic Games. After retiring from professional hockey, he pursued undergraduate studies and coursework at Yale's School of Forestry, developing a foundation in environmental policy and resource economics. He joined Riverkeeper's board before moving into clean energy finance, ultimately joining Brightcore in 2016. Richter brings a rare combination of competitive discipline, academic grounding, and business acumen to one of the most consequential challenges in building decarbonization. In This Episode:  (00:00) Mike Richter, Stanley Cup goalie turned energy leader (03:50) Richter's career path from hockey to Yale and environmental advocacy (08:39) How Brightcore Energy was founded and why geothermal was chosen (14:24) Brightcore's age of adoption story: lighting, solar, and geothermal scale-up (21:30) Economics of geothermal: cost, scale, and competitive advantage explained (24:28) Host wraps with why adoption is now economics, not just virtue Share with someone who would enjoy this topic, like and subscribe to hear all of our future episodes, send us your comments and guest suggestions! Send us Fan MailWhat actually separates the goalies who make it… from the ones who don't?In this episode of The Goalie Mindset Podcast, Pete Fry sits down with Vancouver Island-based goalie coach James Gaertner, who's been developing goalies for over 20 years.James has worked with some high-level talent, including a goalie who just made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers. But what stands out isn't just the results. It's how those goalies think, prepare, and handle pressure. This conversation goes deep into what coaches, parents, and goalies often get wrong.Pete and James break down:The biggest mistake coaches make when handling goaliesWhy trust matters more than quick reactions after a bad goalWhen goalies should be told they're starting and why timing mattersWhy there's no “one right way” to prepare for a gameThe three things coaches actually look for when choosing a goalieWhat separates high-level goalies like Dylan Garand, Kristen Campbell, and Aaron TrotterThey also talk about something a lot of goalies overlook. It's not just how you play when things are going well. It's how you respond when things don't.Body language. Bounce back. Staying engaged even when you're not busy. That's what people notice.James keeps it simple. Compete when it matters. Reset quickly. And trust your game. There's also a strong message for parents. You don't need to coach your goalie. Just support them. The rest will take care of itself.

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sXhNxazZXN4 In episode 338 of the Glass and Out Podcast, Coachella Valley Firebirds assistant coach Stu Bickel stops by to chat. Bickel is a great example of a coach who has taken all the information he was fed as a player, evolved it, and made it his own as he has embarked on his coaching journey. Bickel grew up just outside of Minneapolis and would go on to star for Eden Prairie High School. After two seasons in the USHL, he joined his hometown University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, but after one season, as an undrafted free agent, he decided to bet on himself and make the jump into professional hockey. The move paid off, as in his fourth season, he appeared in 69 games with the New York Rangers. While not formally a coach at this stage, we sense that the first player he ever coached was himself. He needed to define his strengths and weaknesses and evolve his game into one that would enable him to contribute on a nightly basis in the National Hockey League. That is now a job he's doing full-time today, developing defencemen for the NHL's Seattle Kraken, the parent club of the Firebirds. Listen as he shares his process for improving defencemen, the importance of being good on the breakout, and the power of video as a teaching tool. SEASON 4 EPISODE 80: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (3:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: Nobody is at the wheel of Trump's war in Iran. Is the Strait of Hormuz open or is it closed? Are there peace talks with Iran in Pakistan TOMORROW… or nah? Is Jayvee Vance going? Is Iran going? Has Trump scheduled peace talks where we’re the only ones there? Will it make any difference if we’re the only ones there? Doesn’t “blowing a hole in the engine room” of an Iranian cargo ship yesterday mean we aren’t honoring Trump’s own ceasefire he boasted about? Are we paying 20 billion dollars for the Iranian uranium and hostages? The same uranium and hostages Obama bought for 400 million and Trump called him a traitor? Or is that a no? Don’t ask Trump – he doesn’t know. But that won’t stop him from answering anyway. Yes. Then Nope. Then Yes again. Then: All of the Above. in 48 hours he went from 13 posts congratulating himself on winning, to insisting he would stop being “Mr. Nice Guy” and blow up all of Iran. By the way, eactly when was he “Mr. Nice Guy”? We are LOSING the war in Iran and as of today a total idiot is still president and commander-in-chief. He gets questions about the pointless war he started to divert attention from Epstein and the economy he crashed, so he orders the reporters out of the Oval Office, and sits there with hapless munchkin Little Joe Rogan standing behind him, the shine off his cueball noggin blinding cameras and journalists alike. Trump has set off a chain of events over which he no longer has any control – except to withdraw and flee – and to withdraw and flee is to acknowledge he screwed up. And this man would jump off the roof of the White House before admitting he screwed up. The Trump “Administration” has so UTTERLY jumped the shark, that the truthers are coming out from inside MAGA: Alex Jones now insists Trump has done all this DELIBERATELY, because he has made a “deal with the deep state to throw the election to the Democrats." Marjorie Taylor Greene has joined the Trump Assassination Truthers and Trump himself has floated a kind of conspiracy theory ABOUT himself… he wrote ‘Praise Be To Allah’ on Easter morning to “seem as unstable and insulting as possible.” He wanted to seem as unstable as possible? MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, Trump! You’ve finally done something you promised! B-Block (28:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Before the year is out, Major League Baseball will threaten to lock the players out and cancel the season in 2027 because the smaller market teams can't make enough money to compete. One of those teams just sold for $3.1 billion more than it did in 2012. New York's hockey teams support a) Trump putting his name on public buildings or b) legal funds for cops convicted of killing unarmed civilians. Vivek Ramaswamy dismisses his opponent talking about being raped as a child as her "complaining." And Lauren Boebert thinks Congress is too horny and she won't remain, uh, hands off. C-Block (45:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Netflix stock took a huge hit, supposedly after the co-founder Reed Hastings announced he was bowing out. But I think it might've been another announcement that did it. They are going into news podcasts with - Brian Williams? The story of how he imploded at NBC, while I was literally an eyewitness to his public self-destruction, and the advice I gave his bosses that could have saved him (and them) if they hadn't ignored it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
