In this episode, we dive deep into the world of commodity trading with Stephane Bernhard, CEO/CIO of CAM Multi-Strat Asset Management. Drawing from his 30+ years of experience starting at Louis Dreyfus through commodity trading house ETG, Stephane shares how commodity trading has evolved from pure fundamental analysis to today's complex intersection of physical, financial, and systematic trading. The conversation explores the world of commodity houses and physical trading of commodities, before diving into CAM's unique approach to building a commodity-focused multi-strategy fund that bridges physical and financial markets. Stephane details their innovative risk management framework that gives commodity traders more flexibility than traditional pod shops while maintaining portfolio stability. You'll hear why VAR doesn't work for commodity risk management and how they've developed an anti-fragile approach to drawdown management.Throughout the discussion, Stephane weaves in fascinating historical perspective - from his early days in the Madrid sovereign debt crisis to parallels between the end of Bretton Woods and today's shifting monetary landscape. Whether you're interested in commodity markets, multi-strategy fund construction, or the intersection of physical and financial trading, this episode offers unique insights into an increasingly important corner of the investment world – SEND IT!00:00-01:06 = Intro01:07-13:42 = Commodity Trading Houses: Bridging Time and Risk in Global Commodity Markets at Louis Dreyfuss and ETG13:43-29:50 = Commodity Trading Dynamics: Navigating Physical Footprints, Basis Risk, and Market Complexity29:51-40:51 = Constructing a Multi-Strategy Commodity Trading Platform: Exploring ETG's Strategic Vision40:52-53:29= Commodity Market Dynamics: Weather, Volatility, and Global Supply Chains53:30-01:13:51 = Risk Management and Trader Psychology: Mastering the Art of Commodity Trading01:13:52-01:18:50 = Trading Psychology and Market Excitement: Navigating High-Stress Moments01:18:51-01:29:34 = Lessons from the 1971 Gold Standard: Adapting to Historical Market ShiftsFrom the episode: The Secret Club That Runs the WorldFollow along with Stephane on X @TCS_Trader and LinkedIn, and be sure to check out ETG and CAM on LinkedIn as well for more information!Don't forget to subscribe toThe Derivative, follow us on Twitter at@rcmAlts and our host Jeff at@AttainCap2, orLinkedIn , andFacebook, andsign-up for our blog digest.Disclaimer: This podcast is provided for informational purposes only and should not be relied upon as legal, business, or tax advice. When Chris Smedley of Malvern Engineering Ltd was made redundant, he walked out of his employment and 45 minutes later, he signed a contract for an industrial unit and started Malvern Engineering. This entrepreneurial spirit remains with the small business 15 years later with the company recently buying their first 4th-axis machining centre –  a Quaser MV184 EV. The journey for Malvern Engineering has seen the company manufacture everything from motorsport parts to military components and much more. It works with prestigious manufacturers in the automotive, aerospace, food and pharmaceutical sectors to the toolmaking industry – like a typical subcontract manufacturer, Malvern Engineering will take on virtually anything that is thrown its way. This is why the company nestled under the shadow of the beautiful Malvern Hills has invested in a 4-axis Quaser machining centre from ETG.  Recalling why the seven-employee manufacturer opted for the Quaser MV184 EV machine from ETG, Managing Director at Malvern Engineering, Mr Chris Smedley says: “We are typically loyal to our suppliers, providing the quality and service is to the levels we require. However, we were on the cusp of winning a large contract that required a 4th axis machine for producing complex components – and our vendor didn't have the solution we needed. We investigated the market and found a couple of suppliers, but it was ETG and the Quaser that won our business.” Delivered Autumn 2023, the new Quaser MV184 EV was purchased for several reasons, as Chris continues: “We looked at a couple of machines, but when we visited the ETG technical centre and demonstration facility in Wellesbourne, we were flabbergasted by the quality, service and the set up of the company. The Quaser MV184 EV offers us greater flexibility than our existing machine tools and it enables us to reduce the number of required set-ups on complex parts. This is subsequently improving our quality, our throughput and creating greater efficiencies throughout the business.” As a subcontract manufacturer with four 3-axis machining centres and two turning centres, the latest Quaser addition opens the door to new types of work that wouldn't have previously been possible. Alluding to the benefits of the Quaser, Chris continues: “The Quaser has a much more compact footprint than our existing machines, which is invaluable to a small business where space is at a premium. Like our existing machines, the Quaser was supplied with a Heidenhain CNC system which creates familiarity for our team to interchange between machines. With the latest generation of control, we are finding a lot of new features that will help create even greater efficiencies as and when we gain familiarity with the system.” The Worcestershire manufacturer machines everything from 304 and 316 stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, titanium and many more challenging materials in quantities that range from a one-off prototype to small production runs. Alluding to how the attributes of the compact Quaser machining centre are enhancing component quality, Chris continues: “As a new machine, the Quaser is certainly more energy efficient whilst the kinematic movements of the machine and the 4th axis are also reducing cycle times and removing non-cutting time from component production. Added to this, the speed, efficiency and robust build quality are extending our tool life, improving our surface finishes and enabling us to essentially manufacture better quality parts with more aesthetically attractive surface finishes.” Concluding on the level of service the company has received from ETG, Chris says: “The machine has been a fantastic addition to our business and we haven't had to lean on the ETG team that much so far. When we have needed their support, an engineer is available to resolve our queries almost immediately – as a subcontract manufacturer that needs to get parts out of the door, that level of service will prove invaluable.”

Located in Moray, North-East Scotland, an area famous for its Scotch Whisky, Standfast Precision Engineering Ltd provides subcontract manufacturing services that are far more edifying than a tipple. The manufacturer continually invests in machine tools to serve its clients in the offshore and whisky distillery sectors. The latest investment is a Vulcan 710L VMC from the Engineering Technology Group (ETG).  Located in Craigellachie where the River Spey meets the River Fiddich, Standfast has continually invested in new technology to enable the production of high quality components. Primarily working with the oil and gas industry, Standfast has witnessed significant growth in recent years as the offshore industry has enjoyed a renaissance. With a facility that incorporates everything from manual and CNC turning, milling and EDM machining, the company is evolving its business assets to satisfy the demands of its clients.  The latest acquisition, a Vulcan 710L VMC with a 4th axis Lehmann rotary unit from ETG was purchased to provide additional capacity and increase the throughput of its smaller components. As Company Owner and Director Graham Wilson says: “We had a small bed 3-axis machine with a rotary unit, but the compact work area was limited even further by the 4th axis unit. This meant we could only process very small parts or we'd have to transfer components to our larger bed machines that are dedicated to larger jobs – disrupting our workflow and creating capacity issues. We spoke to Ross Milne at ETG's Scottish distribution partner RAM Engineering & Tooling and he recommended the Vulcan 710L VMC.” “We reviewed the market, looking for a machine with a Siemens CNC in a short lead time, as our workload was ramping up and the issue was causing a bottleneck. ETG provided the solution with the Vulcan, and it has been a tremendous asset since it was installed,” adds Graham.  With a limited floor area, the compact Vulcan slotted straight into the shop floor. The outgoing machine only had a worktable of 500mm, which was too small to fit both a 4th axis unit and a vice for 3-axis work. However, the spacious work area of the Vulcan provides a worktable of 760 by 420mm. Commenting upon this, CNC Machinist at Standfast, Mr Scott Coull says: “With the space in the Vulcan, we can fit the 4th axis unit and a tailstock to stabilise larger parts.” Operating the machine daily, Scott adds: “We program parts at the machine and the new Siemens CNC has a large touchscreen interface that improves programming speed by at least 30%. We typically produce batches from 10 to 20 off, so we can program 10 to 20 jobs each week with each program taking from 15 minutes to a couple of hours, so this saving in programming time is significant.” Looking at the build quality and performance of the machine, Scott adds: “The Vulcan is a more rigid and robust machine than its predecessor and this enables us to undertake heavier cutting conditions. Furthermore, the previous spindle had a maximum speed of 8000rpm and the Vulcan provides 10,000rpm, this significantly improves our productivity.”  The family business owned and run by Graham and his wife Michelle has also witnessed improved surface finishes, product quality and reduced downtime since the acquisition of the Vulcan. Scott adds: “Whilst the Vulcan has a tool setting probe that eradicates our previous method of using a dial gauge on every new tool that we put in the machine. This can save us a couple of hours of manual tool setting on the machine each week. In addition, the rapid tool changer is at least 50% faster than the previous machine.” Concluding on the acquisition, Graham says: “We needed a machine with a particular specification for our requirements that was going to deliver reliability and performance. The Vulcan machine from ETG has more capacity, more torque, and a streamlined 4th-axis system and it provides the space for us to machine relatively large parts in either a 3-axis or 4th-axis setup.”

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: 10 years of Earning to Give, published by AGB on November 8, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. General note: The bulk of this post was written a couple of months ago, but I am releasing it now to coincide with the Effective Giving Spotlight week. I shortly expect to release a second post documenting some observations on the community building funding landscape. Introduction Way back in 2010, I was sitting in my parents' house, watching one of my favourite TV shows, the UK's Daily Politics. That day's guest was an Oxford academic by the name of Toby Ord. He was donating everything above 18000 (26300 in today's money) to charity, and gently pushing others to give 10%. "Nice guy," I thought. "Pity it'll never catch on." Two years later, a couple of peers interned at Giving What We Can. At the same time, I did my own internship in finance, and my estimate of my earning potential quadrupled[1]. One year after that, I graduated and took the Giving What We Can pledge myself. While my pledge form read that I had committed to donate 20% of my income, my goal was to hit far higher percentages. How did that go? Post goals Earning To Give was one of EA's first ideas to get major mainstream attention, much of it negative. Some was mean-spirited, but some of it read to me as a genuine attempt to warn young people about what they were signing up for. For example, from the linked David Brooks piece: From the article, Trigg seems like an earnest, morally serious man... First, you might start down this course seeing finance as a convenient means to realize your deepest commitment: fighting malaria. But the brain is a malleable organ....Every hour you spend with others, you become more like the people around you. If there is a large gap between your daily conduct and your core commitment, you will become more like your daily activities and less attached to your original commitment. You will become more hedge fund, less malaria. There's nothing wrong with working at a hedge fund, but it's not the priority you started out with. At the time, EAs had little choice but to respond to such speculation with speculation of their own. At this point, I can at least answer how some things have played out for me personally. I have divided this post into reflections on my personal EtG path and on the EA community. My path First, some context. Over the past decade: My wife Denise and I have donated 1.5m.[2] This equates to 46% of our combined gross incomes.[2] The rest of the money is split 550k / 550k / 700k between spending / saving (incl. pension) / taxes.[2] We have three children (ages 13, 6, 2) and live in London. I work as a trader, formerly at a quant trading firm and now at a hedge fund. Work Many critics of EtG assume that we really want to be doing something meaningful, but have - with a heavy heart - intellectually conceded that money is what matters. I want to emphasise this: This is not me, and I doubt it applies to even 20% of people doing EtG. If you currently feel this way, I strongly suspect you should stop. I like my work. I get to work with incredibly sharp and motivated people. I get to work on a diverse array of intellectual challenges. Most of all, I've managed to land a career that bears an uncanny resemblance to what I do with my spare time; playing games, looking for inconsistencies in others' beliefs, and exploiting that to win. But prior to discovering EtG, I was wrestling with the fact that this natural choice just seemed very selfish. As I saw it, my choices were to do something directly useful and be miserable but valuable, or to work in finance and be happy but worthless. So a reminder that the money I have a comparative advantage in earning is itself of value was a relief, not a burden. My career pathway has not been smooth, with a major derailment in 2018, which ...

UK subcontract machine companies don't get much bigger than Metaltech Precision Ltd in Somerset. As part of the Expromet Technologies Group, the Metaltech facility has been expanded on multiple occasions to reach its expansive 50,000sq/ft site that is home to more than 40 CNC turning centres, more than 15 machining centres and a wide variety of conventional machines, fabrication equipment and metrology technology. However, the latest machine to be installed was a Nakamura-Tome WT-300 with an automated robot loading facility from the Engineering Technology  Group (ETG).  As a company that operates in the aerospace, defence, automotive, marine, oil and gas, rail and marine industries, the Chard-based company has more than 80 staff that are dedicated to delivering exceptional quality products from prototypes and small volume work to larger production runs on its sliding head turning centres.   Discussing the acquisition of its latest machine tool, the Nakamura-Tome WT-300,  Steven Ward from Metaltech says: “We purchased the machine last September and it was installed by ETG along with support and ancillary equipment from Hydrafeed.” Alluding to why the company needed the machine, Steven continues: “A customer approached us with a substantial contract. We identified the requirement to machine a significant number of parts. Although we have existing fixed head and sliding head turning centres, we are conscious of how we utilise our personnel and the hours available to us in a normal working week. The Nakamura solution allows us to operate well outside our normal operating window. The cell works on the basis that the Nakamura with its performance monitoring along with the Hydrafeed Robojob system allows us to palletise either billets or we can bar feed the machine. That enables us to extend our running for lights-out machining, as our normal operating window from 6am to 6pm leaves us with a 12-hour dead period.” With through spindle bar capacity options for bar feeding of 65, 71, 80 or 102mm and a maximum turning diameter of 270mm, the twin-spindle twin-turret Nakamura-Tome WT-300 is perfect for accommodating the bar turning and billet loading demands of Metaltech. Available with an option of the 15/11kW or 18.5/15kW spindle motor on the main and sub-spindle and a maximum turning length of up to 780mm, the heavy-duty Nakamura-Tome WT-300 is the perfect all-rounder for any machine shop that demands the utmost in precision and productivity on a sturdy foundation that will inevitably improve component quality and consistency.  Discussing if the automation route is the only way to remain competitive, Steven adds: “I think businesses must consider automation in general. You have two expensive assets in the business, one is your machinery and the other is your personnel. You have to consider how you best utilise both of those assets. Considering the skill set of staff, you have to understand and ask if they are better utilised on more complex tasks that are maybe smaller batch volumes or 1 and 2-offs. In essence, do you need them to stand there and do a 1000-off, putting a cherry on the cake.”  Highlighting how the staff are utilised with the Nakamura-Tome WT-300 automation cell, Steven says: “We have several people in the machining section trained to come up to check and monitor the machine. The machine itself has a very stringent monitoring facility within it, so even the slightest problem and the machine will alarm out. We are also able to operate outside normal working hours because we have remote access to the machine via its software. So, we can actually see what is going on via the axes loading technology and deal with any issues from there.” Looking more specifically at the Nakamura-Tome WT-300 and why it is the ideal solution for Metaltech Precision Ltd, Steven adds: “We gave consideration to other manufacturers before going down the Nakamura route. However, there were a number of factors that came into it and it was not necessarily a cost-based decision. Our decision was based on performance and availability and how that fits into the model of our business.”

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Earn To Give $1M/year or Work Directly?, published by Yonatan Cale on August 29, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: Many people aren't sure if it would be more impactful for them to earn to give or to work at an EA aligned org. I suggest a solution to solve this problem quickly: Ask the org. What to ask? “Would you prefer to hire me, or to hire your next best candidate and have me donate [as much as you'd donate]?” My prior on their answer I think big longtermism/meta orgs will definitely prefer to hire you if you're their top candidate. Not sure about other orgs. Ask! I asked Ben West from the Centre for Effective Altruism Ben: I personally previously averaged ~$2M/year EtGing but think my labor at CEA is more valuable. I can't think of an instance where I thought someone shouldn't have applied to CEA because EtG was so obviously better. I can think of two instances where I thought applicants should plausibly do EtG despite me wanting to hire them; both were making ~$10M/year. [I'm still glad they applied though] I can't think of an instance where I thought that someone referred to me for advice from 80K should EtG if they had a direct work offer (these people are usually making $500k-1M/yr). If you are making $750k-$20M/yr and think EtG is so obviously better than direct work that it's not worth applying, I'm happy to have a call with you and find an easy way for employers to consider you without taking much of your time. [Note that I am just recommending that people apply, I'm not guaranteeing that they will be hired. I'm also not saying that EtG is always wrong, just that it's rarely so clearly right that you shouldn't even bother to apply to direct jobs.] Would you like to add your own org's answer? Comment below or contact me. Am I saying that people who don't make $1M/year shouldn't apply? No! Totally apply. This post is meant for people who are making a lot of money (however much that might be) and so assume that working directly is definitely not for them, or that it's very hard to check. Did this help? Let me know, even anonymously. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Indian truck manufacturer Ashok Leyland has announced a distribution partnership with ETG Logistics (ETGL), which will include ETGL operating Ashok Leyland dealerships in six countries in Southern Africa. The agreement will cover countries such as Zambia, South Africa and Mozambique. ETG is a global conglomerate operating across various markets, with its ETGL vertical an automotive and farm equipment distribution business active in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Kenya. “We have ambitious growth plans for the African market,” says Ashok Leyland international operations head Amandeep Singh. “Our time-tested products are well suited for the African terrain and offer a superior value proposition. ETG group's extensive connections in these markets will complement our growth plans.” Ashok Leyland is already present in most East and West African countries. ETGL CEO Rajeev Saxena believes the new partnership will be instrumental in providing “a range of commercial vehicle solutions to address the specific requirements of different customer groups in the territory”. The Ashok Leyland trucks to enter the Southern African market range from small 1.5 t payload movers to 20 t tucks and tippers, notes ETGL South Africa business head Pavankumar Nair. ETGL is currently engaged with the process to meet the local compliance requirements on the range of Ashok Leyland vehicles to be introduced locally, and “should be able to start sales in South Africa in July”. Sales in the rest of Southern Africa “will start soon”, says Nair. He adds that Ashok Leyland is a familiar name in the region, as the brand has a presence in the specialised defence vehicle market and, to some extent, commercial vehicles that arrived as special projects.

Dr. Skipper also shares how research shows that proper monitoring and positive reinforcement can lead to more successful recoveries. One of the barriers to recovery is the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance use disorders. People don't want to have this illness because it is shameful. So naturally people resist the diagnosis. There are also bigger institutional issues that present barriers to recovery. The media is one of those. They are always looking for scandals with professionals like doctors, judges and lawyers. Studies have proven that if you set up the right kind of system, addiction is treatable and the success rate is as good or better than any other chronic illness. Systems that highlight positive reinforcement with a little bit of negative consequences have proven to work best.   LINKS MENTIONED:   www.centerforprofessionalrecovery.com www.professionalstreatment.com    BIO:   Dr. Skipper has devoted his career to assisting professionals in crisis. welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. this is: Thoughts on doing good through non-standard EA career pathways, published by Buck on the effective altruism forum. (Thanks to Beth Barnes, Asya Bergal, and especially Joshua Teperowski-Monrad for comments. A lot of the ideas in this post originated in friends of mine who didn't want to write them up; they deserve most of the credit for good ideas, I just organized the ideas and wrote it up.) 80000 Hours writes (under the heading “Apply an unusual strength to a needed niche”): If there's any option in which you might excel, it's usually worth considering, both for the potential impact and especially for the career capital; excellence in one field can often give you opportunities in others. This is even more likely if you're part of a community that's coordinating or working in a small field. Communities tend to need a small number of experts covering each of their main bases. For instance, anthropology isn't the field we'd most often recommend someone learn, but it turned out that during the Ebola crisis, anthropologists played a vital role, since they understood how burial practices might affect transmission and how to change them. So, the biorisk community needs at least a few people with anthropology expertise. I think that there are many people who do lots of good through pursuing a career that they were a particularly good fit for, rather than by trying to fit themselves into a top-rated EA career. But I also think it's pretty easy to pursue such paths in a way that isn't very useful. In this post I'm going to try to build on this advice to describe some features of how I think these nonstandard careers should be pursued in order to maximize impact. I'm going to misleadingly use the term “nonstandard EA career” to mean “a career that isn't one of 80K's top suggestions”. (I'm going to abbreviate 80,000 Hours as 80K.) I'm not very confident in my advice here, but even if the advice is bad, hopefully the concepts and examples are thought provoking. Doing unusual amounts of good requires unusual actions If you want to do an unusual amount of good, you probably need to take some unusual actions. (This isn't definitionally true, but I think most EAs should agree on it–at the very least, most EAs think you can do much more good than most people do by donating an affordable but unusual share of your income to GiveWell recommended nonprofits.) One approach to this is working in a highly leveraged job on a highly leveraged problem. This is the approach suggested by the 80K career guide. They came up with a list of career options, like doing AI safety technical research, or working at the CDC on biosecurity, or working at various EA orgs, which they think are particularly impactful and which they think have room for a bunch of EAs. Another classic choice is donating to unusually effective nonprofits, which is a plan where you didn't have to choose a particularly specific career path (though taking a specific career path is extremely helpful), the unusual effectiveness comes from the choice to donate to an unusually effective place. The nice thing about taking one of those paths is that you might not need to do anything else unusual in order to have a lot of impact. There are also some reasons to consider doing something that isn't EtG or an 80K recommendation. For example: There might be lower hanging fruit in that field, because it doesn't have as many EAs in it. Comparative advantage: The thing that you're best at probably isn't a top recommended EA career, just on priors. You can't get a job in one of the top recommended EA careers, maybe because you're not in 80K's target audience of graduates aged 20-35 who have lots of career options. I care about people in this group, but I'm not going to address this situation much in the rest of this piece, because the relevant con...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA residencies as an outreach activity , published by Buck on the AI Alignment Forum. [This was partially inspired by some ideas of Claire Zabel's. Thanks to Jessica McCurdy, Neel Nanda, Kuhan Jeyapragasan, Rebecca Baron, Joshua Monrad, Claire Zabel, and the people who came on my Slate Star Codex roadtrip for helpful comments.] A few months ago, some EAs and I went on a trip to the East Coast to go to a bunch of Slate Star Codex meetups. I'm going to quote that entire post here (with a couple edits): Our goals are: - to meet promising people at the SSC meetups and move them into the EA recruiting pipeline - to spend some time with promising new EAs, eg those at student groups, in the hope that spending a few hours of focused one-on-one time with one of us will help get them more into EA. Like, I think 80K finds people who are excited about AI safety stuff but aren't very knowledgeable about it yet; I think that those people can maybe get a lot out of a few hours' conversation with a few people who have worked professionally on this stuff. - to visit EAs who are "in holding" doing things like PhD or EtG tech jobs, with possible good outcomes being that they'll be fired up wrt EA and more likely to do really impactful EA stuff on a timescale of like a year, or that their improved (Bay Area/professional EA) connections make it easier for them to spot good opportunities or move into doing more impactful work. - (less primary) to talk to hardcore EAs and swap arguments and get to know each other better Here's why I think it's worth us talking to various promising new EAs and enthusiastic EAs who haven't worked in the EA scene full time: - There are a lot of accumulated arguments about EA topics which I think it's really helpful to think about but which are hard to access when you only know EAs on the internet, because those arguments haven't been written up clearly or at all, or because their writeups are hard to find and rely on background knowledge that you don't know how to acquire. - A lot of the time, EAs present versions of arguments that are strong enough to convince you to tentatively think that it's worth engaging seriously with the possibility that the conclusion might be true, but which have a bunch of holes in them that require substantial thinking to fill. Sometimes EAs (eg me) make the mistake of conflating these two levels of strength of argument, and act as if people should be persuaded by the initial sketch. One way that I notice when I'm making this mistake is by getting in arguments with people who've thought about stuff more than me. I hope that talking to more knowledgeable EAs might help some of the EAs we hang out spot holes in their understanding that might help improve their understanding and their epistemics. Here is a reason that I think that having SF Bay Area EAs talk to rationalists in these cities at SSC meetups is plausibly worthwhile: When smart people are skeptical of some of my weird beliefs, eg that AI x-risk is really important, or that they should consider working on EA stuff, or that long term we should consider radically restructuring the world to make it better for animals, a lot of the time their disagreement stems from something true about the world that the arguments they've seen didn't address. This is hard to avoid because if you try to write an argument that addresses all the potential concerns, it will be incredibly long. But this makes me think that it's often really high impact for people who have thought a lot about these arguments to talk to people who have heard of them but felt very unpersuaded. My predictions mostly matched my impressions of what happened. But I think you might be able to get many of these benefits more efficiently by doing something more like a residency, where you spend a relatively long time in eac...

Physician Interrupted
Confronting Questionable Drug Testing in US Physician Health Programs (part 2)

In Part 2 of Questionable Drug Testing, host Dr. Kernan Manion continues an amazing conversation with Dr. Michael Langan, author of the blog DisruptedPhysician.com. Michael has intensively studied the PHP (physician health program) movement and its 47 state programs' use of inappropriate alcohol biomarker drug testing in assessing physicians referred for the question of substance abuse-related occupational impairment. The EtG urine test as well as others routinely used by PHPs are known to produce false positive results. Use of these tests in such a forensic environment was strongly advised against by SAMHSA, the US Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, specifically because such alcohol biomarker tests were KNOWN to have a very problematic incidence of false positivity. However, these test results are still routinely being used to mandate compliance with PHP's incontestable diagnosis of definitive alcohol abuse and its “recommendation” to the medical board (MLB) that the physician immediately cease practice and go to a PHP-network facility out-of-state at exorbitant cost under threat of loss of license and public humiliation. These tests were never intended to answer the question of “occupational impairment” or even to establish a diagnosis of “substance dependence,” and yet PHPs portray as much to the MLB and to the rights-deprived physician and his/her counsel who naively accept this as established scientific proof. The physician is deprived of any recourse to contest. As presented, there would be little doubt that such a knowingly wrongful process is equivalent to fraudulent diagnosis. The consequences for the wrongfully charged physician are dire. (Due to the length of the original interview and its immense importance, the podcast was divided into two separate podcasts. This is Part 2.) If you're a physician, physician's counsel or simply interested in a deeper exploration of the specifics of the ill-advised use of such tests, the harms that may ensue and potential approaches to confronting this wrongdoing, be sure to visit [https://www.physicianrights.net/drugtestwebinar] to be notified of our upcoming free live webinar specifically devoted to more deeply understanding these harmful practices and what you can do to defend your rights.
