Hengdian, in Zhejiang province, is booming as the location set for two-thirds of China's period dramas. Synopsis: Every first Friday of the month, The Straits Times chats with ST's global correspondents about life as it goes on, amid the screaming headlines and bubbling crises. They come with stars in their eyes, hoping to become the next Fan Bingbing or Jackson Yee. In Hengdian, they put their names down and hope to be picked - to deliver a line, to stand next to an actor, or even just to be a face in the crowd in one scene. Hengdian is touted as China's Hollywood, and with good reason - it was here that high-budget dramas and films such as Story of Yanxi Palace and Curse of the Golden Flower were shot. But it has gained renewed attention in recent years, as Chinese audiences get hooked on micro-dramas - low-budget productions shot in vertical format to be viewed on smartphones. In this episode, ST's foreign editor Li Xueying chats with correspondent Goh Yan Han on the dreams that Hengdian represents to Chinese youths. The Secret of the Golden Flower is a Taoist text on inner alchemy that landed in Jung's hands in the late 1920s. It was the sinologist and Christian missionary in China, Richard Wilhelm who sent the text to Jung for a commentary. It's hard to overestimate the importance this text had on Jung and his work. Reading this text made him abandon his work on the Red Book and shift his focus outside to the comparative studies of the individuation process. Especially interesting for this podcast is that it's in Jung's commentary of the text that he most clearly outlines his rendering of the Imitatio Christi. I invited Jason Smith, host of the podcast Digital Jung, and author of Religious But Not Religious: Living a Symbolic Life, back to the podcast to discuss this important work of literature, Jung's comments on it, and what we can learn from it today. Music played in this episode is licensed under creativecommons.org: "Hard Sell" by Ketsa.

All are welcome to the Kind Mind community.Human blossoming is akin to the delicate yet profound process seen in the natural world, where flowers unfurl their petals to reveal their inner beauty. The metaphor of blooming relates to maturity and is explored in various contexts, from spiritual growth to personal transformation. Just as flowers need the right conditions to bloom, folks too require nurturing environments and opportunities for growth to reach their full potential. Concepts such as the Flower of Life in sacred geometry and the Chinese teachings from "The Secret of the Golden Flower" illuminate the interconnectedness between nature and human existence, emphasizing the importance of harnessing inner wisdom to navigate life's journey. At the heart of this discussion lies the notion of the light reflex, a metaphorical beacon guiding individuals towards enlightenment and spiritual awakening. Like a flower turning upward or backward towards the sun to absorb its nourishing light, humans can cultivate inner radiance by turning towards their spiritual essence. Blooming where they are planted, individuals can unfold their unique potential and transform the social garden with grace and wisdom.(original “frequency” artwork for this episode can be seen on the podcast website)
This reading is from chapter 3 and 4 of the teachings found in the text, The Secret of the Golden Flower, and explains in detail the method of 'turning the light around'. Translated by Thomas Clearly. According to Cleary, this text is is a lay manual of Buddhist and Taoist methods for clarifying the mind. A distillation of the inner psychoactive elements in ancient spiritual classics, it describes a natural way to mental freedom practiced in China for many centuries. The golden flower symbolizes the quintessence of the paths of Buddhism and Taoism. Gold stands for light, the light of the mind itself; the flower represents the blossoming, or opening up, of the light of the mind. Thus the expression is emblematic of the basic awakening of the real self and its hidden potential. The text was written by means of the spirit-writing (fuji) technique, through two groups, in 1688 and 1692. After publication of the translation by Richard Wilhelm, with commentary by Carl Gustav Jung, it became modernly popularized among Westerners as a Chinese "religious classic", and is read in psychological circles for analytical and transpersonal psychology considerations of Taoist meditations.

The Astral Body is a key concept in Secret of the Golden Flower. It is the 'end game' of practicing the Method. A passage from the Ramayana sheds light on the nature of the Astral Body, and demonstrates shared wisdom with Persian and Vedic schools.
"Today I will be your guide and will first reveal to you the Secret of the Golden Flower of the Great One, and, starting from that, I will explain the rest in detail. The Great One is the term given to that which has nothing above it." - Lu Dong Bin, Secret of the Golden Flower
“Essence and Life cannot be seen. It is contained in the light of heaven. The light of heaven cannot be seen. It is contained in the two eyes." - Secret of the Golden Flower

The COP commitments are critically scrutinised. Even if all its pledges were kept concerning GHG emissions, the tripling of renewable capacity, and energy efficiency improvements - and that is a tall order - the world is heading for a 10% increase in emissions by 2030, instead of the 43% reduction required to keep global warming under the 1.5 degree threshold. Following further research post Cop28 I see no reason to change my central warning: prepare for survival on a degraded planet. A new attitude on the global scene is noted - climate defiance. Arguments for climate denial are also examined and dismissed as contrary to the evidence. The episode ends with a beautiful song The Turning of the Year by Mark Dunn of The Bringers of Change whose music albums can be found on Spotify etc. and as CDs at www.fallingarecords.com This episode is being released a few days early in the breather between Christmas and New Year. The next and probable final episode in this mini-series will be Feb 1st 2024. Its subject will be the spiritual, mythical, and spiritual dimensions of the climate crisis. A free meditation programme following the Secret of the Golden Flower starts Jan 2 2024. Contact me at thepilgrimquest@gmail.com if you wish to join - up to 2 weeks late start is OK. ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
There are now some changes to the structure and timing of these podcasts. Firstly, the Spanish language podcasts, which have explored the life and work of Carl Jung, have now ended. For the forseeable future there will only be the English speaking podcasts. Secondly, I am moving the podcast release dates to the first of the month - an easier date to remember rather than the mid-month timing. Hence S2 Ep89 will be released on October 1st 2023 with subsequent podcasts on November 1st, December 1st etc. The overall theme of the podcasts remains - the quest for vision in an age of crises. The current set of episodes are on the Ecological Catastrophe of our Age. As preparation for the coming episode you could read the highly recommended and freely available internet version of The Economics of Biodiversity: The Dasgupta Review. You could start with the Headline Messages (just a few pages) and then read the Abridged version. The full text is for the highly motivated student - who knows this might include yourself. This current set of episodes is placed within the larger context of our exploration of the multiple crises of our age (dramatically referred to as the Ten Horsemen of the Apocalypse) which, in addition to the ecological, will include the economic, financial, political, social, health, military, technological, clash of ideas and ideologies (including the Culture Wars, Woke etc. ), and spiritual crisis of our age. En route we will encounter extraordinary possibilities emerging in the 21st century - such as transformations of human nature, global totalitarianism. modification, replacement or even extinction of Homo sapiens, and spiritual transformation. As you will readily appreciate this is an ambitious undertaking, will take a number of years, and has to be done at a pace which will allow me to complete this task. So I ask for your patience. I also ask for your support, which you can do in two ways: firstly, by telling others of this podcast series; secondly by studying the content of this freely available podcast series (and its references) as seriously as you can. If you can accompany this with a spiritual practice, so much the better. Logic, argument and reason are important, yes, but the vision of spiritual experience is the decisive factor in the type of knowledge or gnosis we seek. As a Jungian analyst I am also very much in favour of combining this with deep self-examination. I also run periodically (say once a year) a 100 day meditation online programme based on the Secret of the Golden Flower. Also there is a parallel series of lectures and meeting (called the Quest) which takes place once a month online. ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
This episode continues a miniseries on Jung's observations on oriental textsexploring his comments on The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation unknown to the West until its first publication in 1954. The next episode will examine his comments on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Like other of his commentaries, such as those of the I Ching and the Secret of the Golden Flower, Jung is here aiming at a building a bridge from an unfamiliar Eastern religion, in this case Tibetan Buddhism, to a Western psychology, namely his school of Analytical Psychology. For example he writes: “… the unconscious, for Analytical Psychology, is the matrix mind with the quality of creativity attached to it, the birthplace of all thought forms and akin to the Universal Mind of the Orient. These thought forms or archetypes are omnipresent and timeless ... By means of the transcendent function we not only gain access to the “One Mind” but also come to understand why the East believes in the possibility of self liberation. If, through introspection and the conscious realisation of unconscious compensations, it is possible to transform one's mental conditions and thus arrive at a solution of people's complex, one would seem entitled to speak of self liberation”.

Several months ago something new and inexplicable occured in my regular meditation practice. In an effort to understand I went to Secret of the Golden Flower, a book I'd read years ago but never quite understood. Shortly thereafter I discovered JJ Semple and his collection of works on the Secret of the Golden Flower, documenting his own experiences and eventual meeting with Gopi Krishna, the man largely responsible for creating the Kundalini 'buzz' in the West. JJ joins me for this deep and revealing conversion spread out over three episodes.
Almost exactly one year to the day since SSR first dove into the Royal Diaries series, Alli and her guest are back to explore the fictionalized journal of another young royal. This time, the focus is on the second to last installment from the series: Anacaona, Golden Flower, Haiti, 1490. Having never learned about Anacaona, they share her story and lament the revisionist history that's kept her out of our textbooks. They also discuss the value of learning history through epistolary novels, the parasocial nature of our relationships with royals over the years, the need for a wider range of narratives from marginalized communities, and so much more. In this episode, we are unpacking the history vs. legends regarding Anacaona and the Taíno people of the Caribbean. We get extra meta about how we make and understand history and share some pro-tips to becoming a better amateur historian. We learn that so many words are actually Taíno in origin and that sometimes science catches up with facts people knew all along (shocker, another Indigenous people group rumoured to be 'extinct' are very much still around!) Also again we pay homage to the greatest example of bad audio editing. Follow us for more research, fun facts, soundtracks and aesthetic posts. ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
We begin by examining the impact of Taoism, especially with respect to the influence of the Taoist book the Secret of the Golden Flower upon Carl Jung and his school of Analytical Psychology. We continue by considering modern China with a focus on Taoism which is one of its indigenous religions. What happens in this country is of immense importance not only for its size (over 1/6th of the world population) but also because of its growing importance.

David Lorimer's guest today is Dr. Yvonne Kason MD, MEd, CCFP, FCFP, who is the President and Co-Founder of Spiritual Awakenings International, and is the Co-Leader and Co-Founder of Toronto Awakenings Sharing Group. She has had five Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), two in her childhood and three in her adult life, as well as multiple Spiritually Transformative Experiences (STEs). She is the Past-President of IANDS, the International Association for Near-Death Studies. Yvonne is a retired family physician and transpersonal MD-psychotherapist, previously on faculty at the University of Toronto, and an internationally renowned medical expert on NDEs and other STEs. In 1990, Yvonne was the first Canadian medical doctor to specialize her medical practice in the research and counselling of patients with diverse types of STEs. She has 40 years of experience counselling STE Experiencers. She co-founded the Kundalini Research Network in 1990, and later co-founded the Spirituality in Health-Care Network in 2000. Dr. Kason is the person who first coined the phrase “Spiritually Transformative Experiences” or “STEs” in 1994. Dr. Kason has five published books, her most recent, Touched by the Light: Exploring Spiritually Transformative Experiences (2019). Yvonne lives in Toronto, Canada, and enjoys “snowbirding” during the winter months, in Encinitas, CA. The Prayer of Saint Francis:Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me bring love.Where there is offence, let me bring pardon.Where there is discord, let me bring union.Where there is error, let me bring truth.Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.Where there is despair, let me bring hope.Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.O Master, let me not seek as muchto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives,it is in self-forgetting that one finds,it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life. Imaginal Inspirations is hosted by David Lorimer, Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network and Chair of the Galileo Commission, an academic movement dedicated to expanding the evidence base of a science of consciousness. Imaginal cells are responsible for the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly, which is the Greek symbol for the soul. These cells are dormant in the caterpillar but at a critical point of development they create the new form and structure which becomes the butterfly.scientificandmedical.net galileocommission.orgbeyondthebrain.org Works and links mentioned:Touched by the Light: Exploring Spiritually Transformative Experiences. This story is about a girl who's trying to find the golden flower. Find out what will happen in this story.
I read the commentary to the Secret of the Golden Flower. A translation of an ancient Chinese text about meditation and energy manipulation. Carl Jung gives a great insight into his philosophy and their understanding of the Chinese Philosophy. I will add 'complete' to the episode once finished. "It is a question of yea-saying to oneself, of taking one's self as the most serious of tasks, of being conscious of everything one does, and keeping it constantly before one's eyes in all its dubious aspects-truly a task that taxes us to the utmost." C.Jung from The commentary from The Secret of the Golden Flower. Like Sati Sampajanna in Buddhism. Clear comprehension of all life's activities. Free energy: the mind is our predictive engine, and the self: it's guide and technician. To be in the flow of the Tao - to not be the barrier to growth or impinge insights.

In this final episode of our journey, Satya begins by reading Jung’s Epilogue to the Red Book from 1959. Satya and Carol discuss Scrutinies, what Sonu Shamdasani considers the third book of "The Red Book." They talk about the recent synchronistic publication of "The Black Books." Satya breaks down the history of Scrutinies and The Seven Sermons of the Dead. Satya explores Richard Wilhelm and the Secret of the Golden Flower, and Jung's emerging understanding of Alchemy. Carol shares the horoscope from this time and the shift from the 12th house to the 1st house astrologically. Jung is beginning to translate this journey into a psychology, rather than a religion. Carol and Satya read through Jung’s “Seven Sermons of the Dead” from 1916 and the strange experiences in Jung’s home, in which the Christian dead visit Jung’s home. They explore how Philemon has changed since “The Magician”. Satya concludes by returning to the beginning. Recorded October 25, 2020 Chapter: “Scrutinies.” THE END!
ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
In today’s episode I have decided to do something rather different. I have chosen a mythic individual at the start of Chinese history, the Yellow Emperor, and have constructed a poem using the story of his retreat to the Mountains of the West in search of enlightenment at the feet of the sage Guangchengzi. This is one of the earliest stories we have of the search for spiritual illumination and its impact not just on an individual but on the collective which was in deep discord. I believe such a story, myth, or archetype is right for our time. The literary sources for Taoist philosophy are taken from The Secret of the Golden Flower, a book of great importance to Jung. There are also references in the poem to the I Ching, the Book of Changes.
Reading and review of the Chinese classic as translated by Richard Wilhelm, with a CJ Jung introduction. Spoiler alert: the book is about tantric Taoist: sexual energy cultivation.

We also find these procedures hidden within the veil of all symbols, in all the hieratic figures of ancient hieroglyphics of many ancient temples, as well as in the Greek and Egyptian myths.” - Samael Aun Weor, The Aquarian Message Additional reading: Frequently Asked Questions: https://gnosticteachings.org/faqs/sex.html Books The Perfect Matrimony https://gnosticteachings.org/books-by-samael-aun-weor/the-perfect-matrimony.html Kundalini Yoga: Mysteries of the Fire https://gnosticteachings.org/books-by-samael-aun-weor/kundalini-yoga-the-mysteries-of-the-fire.html The Mystery of the Golden Flower https://gnosticteachings.org/books-by-samael-aun-weor/the-mystery-of-the-golden-flower.html The Narrow Way https://gnosticteachings.org/books-by-samael-aun-weor/the-narrow-way.html Courses Alchemy https://gnosticteachings.org/courses/alchemy.html Evolution of Sex https://gnosticteachings.org/courses/evolution-of-sex.html Machinery of the Soul https://gnosticteachings.org/courses/machinery-of-the-soul.html

ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
We explore the connection between this ancient Taoist meditation text and the school of Carl Jung. Despite it being an esoteric text it contains a wonderful meditation guide and an entrance into the philosophy of the Far East. It has much to offer modern psychotherapy and those who seek healing in so far as it has a transpersonal dimension and takes seriously the proposition that spiritual practice is of great value in the healing of emotional wounds. If thou wouldst complete the diamond body without emanations, Diligently heat the roots of consciousness and life. Kindle Light in the blessed country ever close at hand, And, there hidden, let thy true self eternally dwell. The Book of Consciousness and Life
ALAN MULHERN: The Quest & Psychotherapy (Jungian Approach to Healing)
The history, metaphysics, and spirtual position of this ancient Taoist text is described. It has an ancient Chinese style which is inherently mysterious, symbolic, and elusive yet it has within its pages a secret of spirtual transformation that is inherently facinating and has stood the test of time. The Tao (the Way) is that which exists through itself; it is the one essence; there is nothing above it; it is the one primal spirit. Essence and life cannot be seen but are contained in the light of heaven. This light is the Golden Flower, the true energy of the transcendent one which, if attained, brings life, if lost brings death. One may live in the energy and light but not see it as fish live in water but see it not. "Silently thou fliest upward in the morning".
Divinatory systems have been used for thousands of years as a source of help and direction to people wishing to resolve situations of personal uncertainty. Jung used the I Ching for 30 years before he met Richard Wilhelm and found confirmation of its usefulness in Wilhelm’s translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower. We explore the value of divination through the I Ching and the Tarot, and link this to the concept of a unified field that can facilitate a healing relationship with the Self. The dream: "I’m sitting on a concrete ledge. A few feet below is mud. A loved, beaded bracelet slips off into the mud and begins to sink. I know I cannot reach it. The feeling of anger and frustration toward myself and the situation distracts me for so long that when I regain clarity I realize it’s late, and I am far from home. I also become aware of a family of brown bears below, a mother and two cubs, father some distance away. The need to get away from the bears and find a safe place to sleep takes over. I look behind me into a beautiful, green grassy space and see a metal fenced off area about the size of a basketball court. A cage with no roof! I run to it for safety, whilst the bears meander calmly in the distance. Although they appear peaceful, I know that if parents’ protective instincts kick in then I’m in danger. I find the gate to the cage and let myself in, questioning if bears can climb the fence. I’m terrified they’ll see and hear me, so resist the urge to move fast. I quietly, slowly slide the lock on the gate across. Feeling safe and relieved, I look around for somewhere to lie down. It’s all very muddy, which surprisingly doesn’t faze me. I find a spot and lie down, settling into the soft mud, although when I roll over I see that I have lain down next to huge, twelve-foot-tall gorilla, which I initially think is a bear who is asleep but rolling over and toward me, about to land on me! My final thought before waking is if that rolls onto me I will never get away. How did I not notice it was there?" In 1474, Queen Anacaona was born in Yaguana, which is now modern day Leogane, Haiti. Yaguana was the capital of Xaragua, a heavily populated kingdom which was also very prosperous. Anacaona means “Golden Flower” in the native Taino language; she was the younger sister of the king of the Xaraguas’, Behechio. In 1494 Christopher Columbus visited the Xaragua kingdom for trade and was met by Anacaona and the king. Anacaona was seen as an equal negotiator with the king. She and her brother were [...]

The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
In honor of Women's History Month William Loren Katz will discuss warrior women like Colonel Carmen Robles from two of his 40 of historical books! "Colonel Carmen Amelia Robles, an Afro-Mexican Woman Leader in the Mexican Revolution"! Mexico provided a safe haven for black Freedom Seekers. Mexicans fought to prevent the spread of slavery in what is currently known as Texas. Anacana one of the first daring Indigenous leaders to mobilize her Tiano people against the European invasion of 1492 was a young woman poet known as Anacoana or "Golden Flower". As Spain's invaders tore her society apart, killed her relatives, and enslaved her people, Golden Flower rose to command the Tiano resistance. Her forces grew in strength and numbers when she united with the Africans who successfully resisted Spanish captivity. Golden Flower was finally captured, and when she refused to assist the foreign invaders, she was executed. Anacoana rem
Eye-popping opulence fills every frame of masterful director Zhang Yimou's tragic melodrama. A Chinese emperor and his wife preside over a dysfunctional royal family that includes incest, poisoning and spontaneous acts of suicide. Chow-Yun Fat and Gong Li play the esteemed leaders, whose rocky marriage is only the first in a series of grave and unfortunate circumstances. The costumes are Oscar-nominated, the set design is full of dazzling hyper-real colors, so much so that you wish the self-obsessed players in this tragedy would stop and notice how damn lovely the palace they live in is. New guest host, Stuart requested this film and joins the discussion, which blossoms like a yellow chrysanthemum, petals unfurling in the sun. I just made that up!
