June 12, 1977, at Camp Scott in Mayes County, Oklahoma a horrible murder took place that no one can ever forget. The victims were three girl scouts, bretween the ages of 8 and 10, who were raped and murdered. Their small bodies were left in the woods near their tent at summer camp. The case was classified as solved when Gene Leroy Hart, a local jail escapee with a history of violence, was arrested, but he was acquitted when he stood trial for the crime. Was sorcery used to hide and protect the murderer? And was a Native American ceremony used to finally bring down the killer? Newstalk explores modern day slavery, also known as Human Trafficking. “There is evidence of human trafficking occurring in every village, in every town across the island of Ireland. And I don't think we know exactly how prevalent it is, because it is very much a hidden crime”. In the latest radio documentary to be broadcast by Newstalk 106 – 108fm as part of it’s weekly Documentary On Newstalk series, ‘Do Disturb’, Producer Patricia Baker looks at one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises; trafficking of human beings, referred to as modern day slavery. Ireland is not immune to this global catastrophe. Human trafficking is a growing criminal activity and justice issue in Ireland. The need for public awareness is paramount, and one Irish charity, MECPATHS, has a simple idea, that will open our eyes to this issue. The radio premiere of ‘Do Disturb’ airs on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 5th July at 7am, with a repeat broadcast airing on Saturday 11th July at 9pm. Podcast goes live after first broadcast. Lembagai KITA / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0) Patricia Baker, Producer of 'Do Disturb' says: Trafficking of human beings, referred to as modern day slavery, is one of our largest humanitarian crises, with over 40 million adults and children enslaved worldwide. Half of these people are sold into the sex trade, the majority of whom are women and children. Ireland is not immune to this global catastrophe. The annual Trafficking in Persons Report, published recently by the US Department of State, further downgraded Ireland to ‘Tier 2 – watch list”, criticising the country for major failings in its treatment of human trafficking victims. Human trafficking is a growing criminal activity and justice issue here in Ireland. The need for public awareness is paramount. The statistics are frightening and overwhelming. How do we respond to such an issue? An Irish charity MECPATHS (Mercy Efforts for Child Protection Against Trafficking with the Hospitality Sector) took one small step. Hotels are known as one of the places where women and children are sex trafficked. MECPATHS is working with hotel groups to deliver training programmes for hotel staff on the indicators and protocol of reporting child sex trafficking. Do Disturb is about the importance of increasing public awareness and understanding that no matter how overwhelming this global issue is, there is something we can do to bring about change. Extracts from the ‘Do Disturb': “When we look at the global number it is estimated that over 40 million people suffer from human trafficking, also referred to as Modern Day Slavery, today. If we think of the times of the transatlantic slave trade which were shocking times, during the two centuries, there was about 15 million people in slavery. So the problem is worse now. “If we turn it back to here in Ireland, I have met women who have been trafficked into and within Ireland and used as a commodity. The people controlling them have often been Irish people, the people using the service have been Irish people. .. We have now turned people into a commodity and that generates income and profit to $150 billon a year”. Kevin Hyland OBE: Kevin is a renowned international specialist in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking. His expertise has been shaped by 30 years experience as an officer in London’s Metropolitan Police Service, notably, as head of the Human Trafficking Unit. In 2014 Kevin was appointed as the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. In 2015 Kevin was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.), acknowledging his outstanding service in combating human trafficking. “I know from working overseas that human trafficking and child trafficking is on the rise. It is one of the fastest growing criminal industries is in the world. I would say that is our number one obstacle to overcome, is to overcome the perceived idea that human and child trafficking is something that happens overseas and not here in Ireland.” Ann Mara, Education Manager, MECPATHS “Interfere. Get stuck in there, be the noisy ol’ one. That would have made a difference in my case. If one person had stood up for me and said ‘this child matters enough to be removed from a situation where she is being abused on a daily basis’. That would have changed my life immeasurably. And it never happened. And people knew.” Hazel Larkin, Writer, teacher, activist. In Art/Rage, Producer Patricia Baker takes a walk through the streets of Dublin with artist and activist Will St. Leger to explore the evolution of street art in Ireland. The radio premiere of ‘Art/Rage’ airs on Newstalk 106-108fm on Monday 13th April at 11am, with a repeat broadcast airing on Saturday 18th April at 9pm. Podcast goes live after first broadcast. The latest radio documentary to be broadcast by Newstalk 106 – 108fm as part of it’s weekly Documentary On Newstalk series is Art/Rage, at look how street art has transformed our streets into a revolving gallery of colour and images. Created as an audio journey through the streets of Dublin with artist and activist Will St. Leger, documentary maker Patricia Baker explores the evolution of street art in Ireland. The programme argues that our cities have become canvases that can testify to the changes in society’s norms, and acts as a revolving creative space for political and social commentary. Credit: One Kind Word. Street Art for 3Ts By Will St. Leger. Location: Middle Abbey Street Dublin. St. Leger says that street art enriches the city. “I believe if you go to a city, and take one hour out, not to look at the landmarks but to look at the marks on the wall, you will get a sense of the cultural temperature of the city” Credit: Dublin City Graffiti Photo By Oliver Gargan. The work was created by Emma Blake (Estr) In Art/Rage. Baker interviews a range of established street artists, from Ireland and abroad, as well as Dublin City Council Arts Office to examine the tension that street art often brings when a wall has been painted without permission, and what procedures are being put in place to ease those tensions. She speaks to a representative of street art collective Subset about their Grey Area project and examines the relationship between graffiti and street art. Artist Al Maser: “I started graffiti maybe at 14…. It did a lot for me graffiti, it was a whole subculture, we are using words like street art, that word was not around when we started, it was graffiti. There are two different worlds. Graffiti is coming from writing your name, abstract typography, screwing letterforms and manipulating them, and that is how you express yourself and it develops on to bigger productions and murals. Street art is coming from originally a more political place were you a communicating a message. They have all merged into one now. People with different disciplines are coming into working in the public space a lot more.” In her exploration of the street art in Dublin, Baker highlights what’s hidden in plain sight, an “Easter egg hunt for the observant” as St. Leger puts it. We might not have noticed James Earley’s mammoth mural enveloping Blooms Hotel in Temple Bar or the small pieces of glazed tiles etched with private messages in Crampton Court Temple Bar, but the art is there, transforming the cityscape in to a revolving gallery. As Street Artist Kinmx said “it is lovely to find these gifts, when you are walking through the street….” CREDITS: Art / Rage is a Curious Broadcast production funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland with the Television License Fee. This weekend on Documentary on Newstalk, Producer Patricia Baker’s new radio documentary, Egg Money, celebrates a generation of women who worked to improve life in rural Ireland; countrywomen often stereotyped and overlooked in their roles as mothers, homemakers and farmer’s wives. These women, now aged between 70 and 90, tell their stories, and when woven together, highlight a very different story than the one expected. These women played a vital role in the development of rural Ireland. They were activists, lobbyists, and business women with very independent means. Photograph Courtesy of ESB Archives Egg Money is broadcast on Newstalk 106 – 108FM on Sunday 17th November at 7am, and again Saturday 23rd November at 11pm. Quotes from Egg Money: “I had a journalist say to me once, ‘I went to an ICA Guild meeting wanting to talk about changing the world, and what did I finish up doing? I was asked to judge a jam making competition’. And I said ‘and are jam making and saving the world mutually exclusive’ ?” Mamo McDonald “My parents were farmers. There was seven of us in the family, no bathroom, no electricity, very basic stuff. We all did jobs. We had to milk the cows before we went to school in the morning, everyone had to milk by hand. Turning the turf in the evening, or the hay. Everyone just mucked in and did what they had to do. Cleaned out the houses. You just did it and there was no saying that you won’t, you just got on with it.” Eleanor Calnan “The one word that has come up all the time in my research is drudgery. Housework was a constant drudgery at the time. If you didn't have electricity, you’re cooking on an open fire., You had to light the fire in the morning if you wanted a cup of tea. Most people did not have running water in their houses, so you are talking about getting water from a well, or from a pump. Washing clothes in a basin with a scrubbing board, it is hard manual work. Also you’re talking about families where you could have anything up to four children in nappies at the same time, and no one had disposable nappies at the time.” Dr Sorcha O’Brien design historian “Women were expected to bring in some income to keep the family afloat. They did it in various ways, child minding, knitting, sewing various. Poultry raring was seen as one for the women. Egg Money was often the only income stream that the women controlled themselves. It was put away to pay towards a child’s education, to improve conditions in the home. It could be used for diverse purposes. It was pretty central to the life of the family.” Professor Emeritus UCD History Mary E Daly “My mother always had the Egg Money, and so did all the other women I knew, my aunties and grandparents, and myself, and it was never questioned. We were independent enough, we did a lot of the work, the women milked the cows, cleaned out cow sheds. They did everything, pitched hay. We were brought up to be independent since the time we could walk. My mother and all her counterparts regarded herself as business women, they knew a lot about running business in those days, and they were trained by their mothers.” Connie McEvoy. “They are hidden from all the statistics. Farmwives were never counted as economically productive people in the census.” Professor Emeritus UCD History Mary E Daly “ICA was very good for interaction with women, different ages. The ICA would have been very vocal on women’s rights.” Mary Therese Coen “I started off a conservative, I was as conservative as anyone. I thought these radical women’s movement were … (pause) well I thought Neil McCaffrey had cloven feet. Then I meet her and heard her speak, and I thought she was very articulate, she was very funny, and I was also admiring of a lot of the things the radical women were doing. They were going along a different path to the one we were going, but they had echoes of one another. I became a born again feminist. I claimed our place in the women’s movement, because we were part of the wider women’s movement because we were working for women too. Mamo McDonald, Past National President of the ICA, founder of Age and Opportunity. Enquiring Minds will be broadcast on Newstalk 106 – 108fm on Sunday 1st September at 7am, and repeated on Saturday 7th September at 9pm Just as the schools go back for another year, Newstalk 106-108FM broadcasts Enquiring Minds, a new radio documentary which follows a group of ten-year-olds (4th class) from the Central Model Senior School on Gardiner Street in Dublin’s inner city, who are participating in a series of philosophy and contemporary art workshops. The documentary celebrates the capacity of children for critical and independent thought, and their ability to question and explore through the disciplines of contemporary art and philosophy. Central to the documentary is the children’s responses as they are engaged on a philosophical level. We listen to their capacity even at a very young age for deep thinking and critical reflection. Woven through the children’s voices are the reflection of philosophers and teachers on the role philosophy and contemporary art has in our society. We hear about the importance of engaging children in philosophical enquiry in school through the study of philosophy and art. We see how this can teach children to become critical and independent thinkers, empowering them for a future within a rapidly changing world. Together philosophical ideas and contemporary art can open up new ways of connecting and developing the enquiring mind, enriching the child’s capacity for expression and for critical and independent thought. “We try and find ways of talking about values and ethics philosophically, but also to find ways of connecting with the lives of children and young people so they have these spaces to explore, and understand, and imagine different ways of thinking and existing in the world,” said Aislinn O’Donnell, Philosopher and Professor of Education at Maynooth University, member of the Centre for Public Education and Pedagogy and founder member and ambassador of Philosophy Ireland. “They really have something to offer us in terms of showing us the singularity of who they are, the ways they see the world, what they have witnessed, experienced and the wisdom that comes from that, I think we can underestimate children.” Enquiring Minds is also a story of the need to create space and time within a rapidly paced society for engaging with the complexity of concepts and ideas, to question deeply, to imagine divergent views, to explore many answers to the same questions about love, justice, identity, existence, meaning, politics and knowledge. “When you engage in philosophy for children it forces you to rethink your understanding of philosophy and rethink your understanding of children. It is not some cute novel thing that is happening, it is people making sense of their experience. And just because they are shorter and have not been around as long should not make a difference”, said Dr Joe Oyler, lecturer in teacher education in Maynooth University, co-ordinator for the philosophy for children workshops hosted by the Institution of the advancement for philosophy for children. Katy Fitzpatrick, who works in gallery education with a focus on children and young people’s engagement in contemporary art and co-creator of Art and Philosophy in the classroom said of the philosophy and contemporary art workshops; “To have that space to be able to have those conversations in a safe way, I think for children to have those ranges of experience with different artists and art practices with different galleries, to go into artist studios. To work in different rhythms and methodologies for children is really important” Enquiring Minds will be broadcast on Newstalk 106 – 108fm on Sunday 1st September at 7am, and repeated on Saturday 7th September at 9pm Podcast will be available for download from newstalk.com after the broadcast. In our latest Documentary on Newstalk, Producer Patricia Baker tells the remarkable story of 700 female students from colleges in Oxford and Cambridge who travelled by steamboat to Trinity College Dublin in the early 1900s to collect their degrees…because their own universities refused to confer degrees upon women…IN Steamboat Ladies Steamboat Ladies is the story of 700 female students from colleges in Oxford and Cambridge who travelled to Trinity College Dublin by Steamboat between 1904 -1907 to collect their degrees. They did this because their own universities refused to confer degrees upon women. In 1904 Trinity College Dublin opened its doors for the first time to women students. This was a ground breaking move but it had unintended consequences. Between 1904 and 1907, 700 female students from colleges in Oxford and Cambridge travelled to Trinity to receive their degrees, because their own universities refused to confer degrees upon women. They travelled to Ireland by Steamboat. And as such became known as “the Steamboat Ladies”. These were pioneering women from the field of academia, science, and humanities, and they went on to have careers that began to shape the newly emerging role of women in politics and society. The arrival of the Steamboat Ladies to Trinity was hugely significant. They brought with them an enormous wave of possibilities for women that is still felt today. Steamboat Ladies tells the remarkable story of these pioneering academics and by doing so explores the continuous battle for gender equality within academia. “I think their story is untold, it is not known” “We were shocked when we heard it, we thought that’s just a story, but it is real” “People who live in our area and go to our type of school, they thought they won’t make it, they won’t be able to go to college, they won’t achieve anything” “Just because we are women and we live around this area doesn't mean we cant achieve what we want to”. “The Steamboat Ladies did not have the opportunities that we have, so why shouldn't we take these opportunities”. “They did not limit themselves so why should we limit ourselves”. “It is normal for us to go to college because of people like them.” ‘The Mercy Girls’, 6th Year students from Mercy Secondary School Inchicore “Trinity said, ‘we have opened our doors to women now, so for three years we will give degrees to women from Oxford and Cambridge who have successfully completed their degree examinations.’ I think they thought a few Irish girls who were not able to go to Trinity would apply. In the end 700 applied. So they were overwhelmed by all these young women - and not so young - coming over and doing this, and it turned into quite a big episode. It was very good for Trinity women, because they saw these academic women, proudly wearing their gowns and hoods, all professional women, and they said that is what women graduates can do. “Most of them only came for one night, they would have been lecturers, they were working in school teaching or in public life. They took one day off, they came on the overnight Steamboat, stayed one night in Dublin, got their degrees the next day, and went back the following night. That is why they got nicknamed the Steamboat Ladies. You can imagine an invasion of all these women into Trinity, they came and they went. They were always known, both here and in Oxford and Cambridge as the Steamboat Ladies. Emeritus Fellow Susan Parkes “When I became a fellow of Trinity in 1968, to mark this occasion, the then Principle of Newnham, Cambridge, Dame Ruth Cowen, gave me one of the Steamboat Ladies gowns, to mark this event. It was a plain black gown. It was a gift from Cambridge to me personally. I thought that was really moving that they wanted to mark the full accession of women to all stages in Trinity, in gratitude for what Trinity had done for them. These were very important women, in society, and in the world of learning, and it was extremely important that they should be recognised as such. Emeritus Professor Barbara Wright Note: 1968 was the year that Trinity eventually allowed women to become Professors and Barbara Wright was one of the first women to be appointed Professor. Be sure to tune in to receive this gift! About Ed: Edd worked with the unusual energy in his hands and body constantly as he was growing up. His favorite subjects in school were science and physics, and through them he searched for the scientific explanation of the energy he was experiencing - but there were no explanations to be found until 1994 when he met the distinguished physicist, Dr. William Levengood of Grass Lake, Michigan. Dr. Levengood was able to measure and quantify Edd’s energy output in his laboratory. For several years Edd worked on laboratory experiments with Dr. Levengood, as well as with Dr. John Gedye and Charles Pyler. He learned how to increase his energy output, to turn the energy output off completely, to control the switch of the polarity of the energy from positive to negative, and to affect the lab equipment from a great distance (even thousands of miles). Edd and the scientists designed and carried out countless experiments, with Edd’s measurable output of energy continually increasing. At the same time, control of his energy became more precise. Edd works with the prestigious Rhine Institute and offers private and group sessions.

Join Supernatural Girlz Helene Olsen and Patricia Baker as they interview Ed Becker. This is the story of a true haunting. It was the first ever filmed and televised by NBC in 1971. A young couple purchases a building that was built and occupied by a single family that refused to relinquish their hold, even after death. Investigated and verified by experts, this residence brought chaos to the lives of those who chose to reside there. Unlike a horror novel, this chronicles what a real ghostly experience would resemble. Long before the laws of disclosure, a young couple winds up in the midst of strange occurrences prior to the term 'paranormal' becoming a common description. Searching for help at time when supernatural events were a taboo subject and being ignored by the Church, sent them into a desperate search for any assistance. Only a little known organization came to their aid. Author Tom Valentine, brought in nationally known psychic, Joseph DeLouise, who then asked assistance of an exorcist from England, Reverend William Derl-Davis. Together, they gave their best effort at exorcising the multiple spirits inhabiting the building and disrupting the lives of the living. Events were filmed by NBC, who sent their most prominent Chicago journalist, Carole Simpson, to cover the event. Hear about the young couple with a newborn as they attempt to cope with inexplicable events, experience denial, plead for help from their Church, and step into the world of the paranormal.
