In late nineteenth-century Latin America, governments used new scientific, technological, and geographical knowledge not only to consolidate power and protect borders but also to define the physical contours of their respective nations. Chilean and Argentine authorities in particular attempted to transform northern Patagonia, a space they perceived as "desert," through a myriad of nationalizing policies, from military campaigns to hotels. But beyond the urban governing halls of Chile and Argentina, explorers, migrants, local authorities, bandits, and visitors also made sense of the nation by inhabiting the physical space of the northern Patagonian Andes. They surveyed passes, opened roads, claimed land titles or leases, traveled miles to the nearest police station, rode miles on horseback to escape the police, and hiked the landscape. In Landscaping Patagonia: Spatial History and Nation-Making in Chile and Argentina (University of North Carolina Press, 2025) Dr. María de los Ángeles Picone tells the story of how people living, governing, and traveling through northern Patagonia sought to construct versions of Chile and Argentina based on their ideas about and experiences in geographical space in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By repositioning the analytical focus from Santiago and Buenos Aires to northern Patagonia, Picone reveals how a wide array of actors, with varying degrees of political, economic, and social power, assigned distinctive—and sometimes conflicting—meanings to space and national identity. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Missionary and Pastor Pat Picone talks about the one thing; the one thing that we cannot afford to neglect, having a right relationship with God and being close and intimate with Him. Sometimes we let doing things for God get in the way of being in right covenant with Him, walking right with Him and being in His presence.

Another first for you! We are thrilled to introduce you to Chief David Picone, our first-ever fire chief on our podcast. He is the Fire Department Battalion Chief and Health and Safety Officer with the City of San Diego. June is PTSD Awareness Month, so we are happy to share our recent interview with Chief Picone. In this episode, Chief Picone shares his educational background, his desire to be a rock star, his journey as a career firefighter, and how he has grown to be a steward for cultural change with the City of San Diego Fire Department. The success of San Diego's program has attracted attention from fire departments across the nation and even the Tokyo Fire Department, the largest urban fire department in the world, and Chief Picone has been an integral part of the program since 2017. Chief's call to action is for cities and fire departments everywhere to adopt similar changes that have been made in San Diego so that first responders get the care they need when they need it. Key elements to the City of San Diego's success include: commit to building a culture of caring (it takes work!)demonstrate to first responders that you care about them and value their effortsencourage claims professionals to spend time with first responders to better understand the demands of their jobsaccelerate access to careprovide access to skilled and experienced medical professionals who are equipped to handle the needs of first responders, specifically when they come forward with symptoms of PTSDA few points mentioned during this episode with Chief David Picone:Firefighters and police officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of dutyFirst responders may experience 200+ traumatic events in their career vs. an average of 5 traumatic events in the average civilian's lifetime1 out of 3 first responders develop PTSDCity of San Diego Fire-Rescue Health and Safety Officehttps://www.sandiego.gov/fire/services/health-safety-officeDrexel University's Fire Service Organizational Culture of Safety (FOCUS) program for fire departments. About the Guest(s): Joshua Picone is a father from Miami, Florida, who has firsthand experience with the family court system's challenges. As a young child abandoned by his own father, Joshua provides a unique perspective on fatherhood from both the lens of a child and as a parent himself. He is an advocate for father's rights, sharing his story to illuminate the struggles fathers often face when fighting for custody and fair treatment in the legal system. Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode of "The Father's Truth," host Alan Donovan introduces us to Joshua Picone, a dedicated father entangled in the complexities of the family court system. With a focus on father's rights and the quest for equitable parenting, Picone's narrative offers listeners an intimate glimpse at the emotional toll legal battles impose on families. Joshua Picone's tale unfolds with the unraveling of his relationship with his ex-partner, the subsequent custody disputes, and the underlying manipulations that challenge his bond with his daughter. Peppered with insights into the often one-sided court proceedings, this episode exposes the raw emotions and the uphill battle many fathers face. Through discussions about supervised visitation, false accusations, and parental alienation, the show highlights the systemic issues within family courts that frequently disadvantage fathers. Notable Quotes: "Children pick up on micro gestures...they're very in tune with us and our feelings since they're babies." "It's like the perfect storm...the courts create it to where you [the father] can allow it to go so far." "The problem is that it's costly...the hardest part after the retainer is a guardian ad litem." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thefatherstruth/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thefatherstruth/support
