Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris bring you the Alphabet Soup-er Series! This month's letter was Q, and Kris went with Q*Bert for PlayStation and Dreamcast. How much is there really to talk about with this one? How weird is the ending? Why are eye twitches funny? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dan's been a little out of sorts this week, so he didn't have much time for gaming. Kris, on the other hand, spent a little more time with Zelda, and tried out the new Vampire Survivors DLC, which is fantastic. Finally, in Week Old News, Sony kills the Concord studio, along with any hopes of the game ever making any sort of profit, The Oregon Trail gets the Barbie treatment, Castlevania gets a crazy box set and a musical, Super Mario Bros. gets a Game Boy Color makeover, and more! Very few people have attained the level of innovation in their craft as DJ Qbert. The saying “If You Build It, They Will Come” was written about guys like him. Years before rising to global fame, he had already been discovering and perfecting a huge number of turntable routines and tricks that would become standardized scratches, staple sounds in hip-hop, pop culture caricatures in TV/Film/Video games, a focus within numerous music and sound production schools and the absolute metric of talent at the famed Disco Mix Club aka the DMC International DJ Competition. Qbert has bravely and pridefully straddled the line between commercial successes as visible as TV commercials for Apple and his own deep dirty break beat cuts such as ‘Galactic Butthair', pioneering scratch music film scores for psychedelic animated movies such as ‘Wavetwisters' and founding his own Qbert Skratch University. There is no way to ever be fully prepared for the freestyle music and comedy extravaganza that is the master DJ Qbert, and I'm honored to say we tried today on #UpgradeMe. https://www.DJqbert.com https://www.youtube.com/@thudrumble TEKTONIK Music Workout Diary by Dana Leong #TKwork A free workout journal curated by Grammy Musician & Wellness Enthusiast Dana Leong - Tag @TEKTONIKmusic #TKwork, Share, Tweet, DO IT! bit.ly/TKWORK Welcome back to Upgrade Me. One natural guess is that it is AlphaGo-style Monte Carlo Tree Search of the token trajectory. It seems like a natural next step: Previously, papers like AlphaCode showed that even very naive brute force sampling in an LLM can get you huge improvements in competitive programming. The next logical step is to search the token tree in a more principled way. This particularly makes sense in settings like coding and math where there is an easy way to determine correctness. https://twitter.com/mark_riedl/status/1727476666329411975 "Anyone want to speculate on OpenAI's secret Q* project? Something similar to tree-of-thought with intermediate evaluation (like A*)? Monte-Carlo Tree Search like forward roll-outs with LLM decoder and q-learning (like AlphaGo)? Maybe they meant Q-Bert, which combines LLMs and deep Q-learning Before we get too excited, the academic community has been circling around these ideas for a while. There are a ton of papers in the last 6 months that could be said to combine some sort of tree-of-thought and graph search. Also some work on state-space RL and LLMs." https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/22/23973354/a-recent-openai-breakthrough-on-the-path-to-agi-has-caused-a-stir OpenAI spokesperson Lindsey Held Bolton refuted it: "refuted that notion in a statement shared with The Verge: "Mira told employees what the media reports were about but she did not comment on the accuracy of the information."" https://www.wired.com/story/google-deepmind-demis-hassabis-chatgpt/ Google DeepMind's Gemini, that is currently the biggest rival with GPT4, which was delayed to the start of 2024, is also trying similar things: AlphaZero-based MCTS through chains of thought, according to Hassabis. Demis Hassabis: "At a high level you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models. We also have some new innovations that are going to be pretty interesting." https://twitter.com/abacaj/status/1727494917356703829 Aligns with DeepMind Chief AGI scientist Shane Legg saying: "To do really creative problem solving you need to start searching." https://twitter.com/iamgingertrash/status/1727482695356494132 "...

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can find David and his podcast 'Quantum Kickflip' at: www.quantumkickflip.com Twitter: @quantumkickflip Instagram: @quantumkickflip This week, we're going about as old as it gets here at RTG Industries, and talking about an arcade game from 1985 that was ported to pretty well everything back in the day - Paperboy! Why was it ported to everything? Because it's awesome! I don't care that it isn't the deepest game ever. Or the best controlling. Or even beatable, frankly. I love this game. Delivering papers to your customers and destroying pretty well your non-subscribers own at the same time. And all while riding your bike and avoiding cars, knife-wielding neighbours, tornados, dogs, and the Grim Reaper. Seriously. My buddy David Rae makes his return to the show this week, and we had a great time talking about how much more fun it is to deliver papers in video games than it is in real life. And before we go to work, I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, we talk about the prices of some old games today, and whether or not they're reasonable. Someone asks what the worst part of being a content creator is? And is Sega doing Sonic dirty by releasing his new game 72 hours before Mario and Spider-Man hit store shelves?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 arcade beauties: Dig Dug II, BurgerTime, and Q*Bert. Learn more about your ad choices. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Totally awesome video games! That's what Joysticks promises. Eugene, McDorfus and King Vidiot are running interference while we chew up the scenery of this 1983 T&A buffet. This movie has everything you do AND don't want you in your early 80s celluloid war chest. Scott McGinnis and Corrine Bohrer round out the casting staples of any great, but forgettable 80s flick. Joe Don Baker must have been blackmailed to be in this movie. Come to think of it, he was blackmailed IN this movie as well. Art imitating life...imitating art? Who knows. I'm as lost as that senile wizard wandering around the Gauntlet landscape with this summary anyway. PAC-MAN, Galaga, Defender, Asteroids, Zaxxon, Tempest, Two Tigers, Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Track & Field, Star Castle, Centipede, Dig Dug, Tron, Missile Command, Donkey Kong, Robotron, Frogger, Burger Time, Rampage, 1942, Berzerk, Q*Bert, Joust, Rolling Thunder, Contra, Double Dragon.....that's enough characters for a great summary, right?

In this episode, Marc selects Radiohead's album from 2000, Kid A to discuss with Eric and to mildly annoy Steve. We take a brief look at the band pre- and post-Kid A to determine when they decided to have Q*Bert, the lovable orange video game thing, join the band. Then, as always, we go track by track to determine just how icy and cold the band sounds on the record as it shows on the album cover. Jeffery P. Lee is a visionary artist whose foresight and instincts propelled a quirky evolutionary game to international recognition ushering in the Golden Age Video Games by his creation of Q*Bert! He has been doodling illustrations ever since he was a kid and never turned off the faucet of his flowing creativity. Thousands of hours of paper and pencil doodles, focused art classes throughout high school, and a forged practiced passion at University of Illinois graduating with a degree in Graphic Design all pointed him toward his destiny. From the beginning, Jeffery has been a sponge of artistic expression, exposing himself to as much history, culture, and content as possible. His doodle of the large-nosed, armless critter hopping around a pyramid of cubes and by happy serendipity a classic of the Golden Age of Arcade Video was born, “Q*Bert”He shares with us the passion and perseverance it takes to become a professional artist inside the video game world during the 80's classic era while giving us an inside look into the formation of the iconic creatures that populate the universe of Q*Bert.----------------------------------------------------Website: www.jeffreyplee.comGalloping Ghost Arcade: www.gallopingghostarcade.com----------------------------------------------------Gamestop Official Holiday Sales Shop our Holiday Store now.
