My guest today is Prof Dave Pruett, former NASA researcher; award-winning computational scientist; emeritus professor of applied mathematics at James Madison University (JMU); the originator of "From Black Elk to Black Holes", a Templeton-award-winning Honors seminar at JMU; and the author of Reason and Wonder: A Copernican Revolution in Science and Spirit (Praeger 2012, paperback 2016). Reason and Wonder, synthesizes modern scientific insights with ancient spiritual wisdom. Prof. Ptuett says he learned a lot from the work of French paleontologist-priest Teilhard de Chardin who held that biological evolution is not directionless. It tends toward greater biological complexity with concomitantly higher consciousness. This gave rise to the twin theories of cosmogenesis and complexity-consciousness. Dave also found Jung's radical theories of the unconscious, synchronicity, and individuation influenced his own theories.In the present, scientific discoveries, particularly those of Quantum Mechanics, are now beginning to resonate with and reinforce ancient wisdom, wisdom that has been imbedded in indigenous mythologies for millennia. It's incumbent upon those who have already transitioned to a more sustainable “myth of meaning” to find ways to encourage others along the path.We talked about mysticism. Teilhard and Jung were mystics. One definition of a “mystic,” paraphrased from theologian Matthew Fox (1991), states simply: A mystic is one who is in awe of the universe.It's quite extraordinary that Black Elk and Einstein were contemporaries, even more so that their profoundly different backgrounds and education would lead them to similar views of the universe. The “web of life”—which connects all beings, living and “non-living”—figures prominently in Native American mythology. So too, from Einstein's general theory of relatively, we learn that the geometry of spacetime is not Euclidean like a sheet of graph paper; it's warped by the presence of massive objects like stars. The warping of spacetime is dynamic, varying in time. In the great cosmic dance, matter tells spacetime how to warp, and spacetime tells matter how to move. In this dance, the motions of stars or the interactions of black holes send gravitational waves rippling throughout the spacetime web. Where do we come from? Science is making progress on this age-old question of humankind. The Universe was once much smaller than the size of an atom. Small things mattered in the small Universe, where quantum physics dominated the scene. To understand the way the Universe is today, we have to solve remaining major puzzles. The Higgs boson that was discovered recently is holding our body together from evaporating in a nanosecond. But we still do not know what exactly it is. The mysterious dark matter is holding the galaxy together, and we would not have been born without it. But nobody has seen it directly. And what is the very beginning of the Universe?

In today’s episode, Jessica shares three of her favourite ways to manage energy.Managing our energy is vital, because we live in a quantum universe where we are all made of the same stuff: you, me, the animals, trees, the sky and ocean, the table I’m recording this on, the car you’re driving… and also our thoughts and our feelings.1>> Setting an Intention: Before you begin your day or a task, or head out somewhere, set an intention for the outcome. You are focusing on putting your energy on the outcome FIRST. The Universe doesn’t speak in negatives, so avoid “not be late” as the Universe only hears “be late”. 2 >> Cord Cutting: Ensure you're in a quiet place and close your eyes, deep belly breaths to ground self. When you’re ready, envision a cord connecting you to the other person and karate chop down my body.3 >> Releasing and Calling Back Energy: At the end of the day is much the same, deep breaths to slow yourself down ground you, and centre you. Envision a cup that is full of the energy that’s attached to you during the day that’s not yours, and send it back out until it’s empty. Then imagine it exploding (this is the completion). His PhD thesis was on ‘the parton content of the photon and photon-induced minijets’, and no that’s not about Dolly Parton or tiny planes, we checked. Following his PhD, Jeff found himself back in Oxfordshire as a postdoctoral researcher under renowned particle physicist Frank Close. A move back to Manchester saw him becoming professor of particle physics at the young age of 36, where he now looks at data from some of the world’s most important particle physics experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. Jeff met fellow Manchester prof Brian Cox when he lectured Brian on Advanced Quantum Field Theory (despite being around the same age), and they have since written a series of critically-acclaimed popular science books together, including Why does E=MC2?, The Quantum Universe, and Universal: a guide to the cosmos. He’s also consulted for a host of TV programmes. His public engagement work earned him the Kelvin Medal and Prize for outstanding contribution to public understanding of physics in 2013.
