Bert Terhart is an adventurer, sailor, and lifelong explorer who currently resides on a smaller island off Vancouver Island, Canada, a place with a surprisingly large population of 750,000. Originally from the prairies of Canada near Fargo, North Dakota, Bert grew up in a small, hardworking oil town, shaped by cold landscapes and a strong sense of community. His Dutch heritage, with a family background in the Merchant Marine, ignited his lifelong love of sailing. ⁣ Bert joined the Canadian Army at 17, attending the Canadian military college, the equivalent of West Point. He served in the Canadian Special Service Force, an elite unit trained alongside the U.S. military, and participated in intense Cold War-era training exercises. His military experience led him to reflect on the harsh realities of war, but he ultimately left the Army and pursued a career in oceanography after being disqualified from the Navy due to colorblindness. ⁣ A passion for the ocean, history, and exploration led Bert to retrace the routes of legendary explorers like Captain Cook and William Bligh, sailing over 50,000 nautical miles and navigating some of the most remote and challenging regions in the world, including the Arctic Circle and the Bering Sea. He is also known for his solo paddling expeditions across Canada and adventurous voyages in the Southern Ocean.

In this conversation, we unpack Matt's latest project: a multi-episode documentary podcast called 'The Announcement', which explores the fallout of Patagonia's now-famous announcement that "Earth is our only shareholder." On the surface, it looked like a bold, revolutionary move. But dig deeper, and you're into thornier territory—philanthropic capitalism, tax implications, the role of billionaires in shaping our futures, and whether good intentions can ever truly escape the systems they're trying to fix. This is a conversation about nuance, values, and why asking better questions might matter more than finding neat answers. After a lot of thought and taking note of audience feedback, we've decided to categorise some of our features a little differently. Most of our episodes will be unchanged, but occasionally we feature guests who are definitely relevant to the worlds of adventure and exploration, but don't necessarily have rip-roaring tales of adventure and aren't adventurers in the truest sense of the word. Intro, The Far Reaches. In this new long-term series we'll speak to guests about subjects related to our planet and our place on it. These episodes will dig a little deeper, perhaps enter the realm of armchair philosophy, and will tackle some more existential questions surrounding adventure and exploration. In the first episode of The Far Reaches, our guest is Matt James. Matt is the Chief Animal Officer at Colossal, a start-up focused on de-extinction. Their goal is to use cutting-edge science to bring back lost species, and secure the health and biodiversity of our planet's future. Matt's job is, in part, to work out what to do with these species once they're back in the world. In this episode, they discuss in detail the meaning and realities of 'conservation', and what de-extinction actually means; the practicalities, methods, reasons, issues, ethics and controversies. It's a fully transparent conversation, and Matt doesn't shy away from the hard questions one bit. No doubt you'll hit play feeling a little skeptical, but hopefully this conversation will teach you about the potential positive impacts these initiatives could have on planet earth. As Matt James puts it, it's not if we can do this, but when.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

ER Physician, filmmaker, popular speaker and travel company founder. Here how it all comes together [Show Summary] Dr. Calvin Sun is an emergency room physician, known for his blog-turned-travel company. During the pandemic, his travel content quickly shifted to real-time COVID updates as he chronicled his experience as an emergency room doctor in Manhattan. He has gathered all of these experiences into his newly released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. Interview with Dr. Calvin Sun, Founder and CEO, The Monsoon Diaries [Show Notes] Welcome for the 493rd episode of Admissions Straight Talk, Accepted's podcast. Thanks for joining me. Given the time of year, I'd like to highlight for today's listeners a wonderful resource if and when you're invited to a medical school interview, Accepted's free download called The Ultimate Guide to Medical School Interview Success. In the guide, you learn how to prepare for interviews, including the difficult questions, how to make sure your body language matches your intent, and what is proper follow-up after your interview. Grab your free copy at accepted.com/ultimatemediv and enhance your chance of acceptance. It's really hard to summarize Dr. Calvin Sun's bio, but I'll try anyway. Calvin graduated from Columbia in 2008 and in 2014, he graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and then began his residency in emergency medicine at Montefiore and Jacobi Medical Centers. He also was the director of Resident Wellness at Jacobi. In his non-existent spare time during medical school, he somehow managed to found and now runs The Monsoon Diaries, which he describes as a blog-turned-travel company. The Monsoon Diaries organizes flexible budget trips and has gone to over 128 countries in the past six years. He's also a filmmaker, popular speaker and activist in the Asian American community emergency room physician, and, at one time at least, was a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine. Listeners, I invite you to listen to accepted.com/254 for the incredible story of how Calvin Sun became Dr. Sun, founded Monsoon Diaries, the travel company, and portrays his experience as an emergency room physician in Manhattan, the corona pandemic's epicenter in 2020. To start, I'd like to ask you how you came to write your just-released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. What's the story behind the book? [3:12] The story is my life in a nutshell, in a show-don't-tell fashion. It can also be seen as a love letter of gratitude because it's being released at the tail end of what we hope to be the worst or the end of the pandemic. I was approached by a literary agent two years ago. It was a totally cold approach in January 2021, and they asked if I'd be interested in writing a book. I think I had mentioned to you in our prior podcast, episode 254, that I have this habit of writing, which is what caused my Monsoon Diaries blog to turn into a community. I was writing live and blogging live on my travels while I was a full-time medical student. People started following along and it turned itself into a community.  During the pandemic, I did the same thing. We couldn't travel during the pandemic. It was not ethical, so I worked all the time, and I blogged about it in the same way I would on a trip because it was all new territory and new frontiers. That's the only thing I knew how to do to keep myself alive when I couldn't travel. It was the next best thing. People followed along, one of whom was a literary agent who then wanted to turn it into a book so I said, "Sure." One thing led to another, and two years later we now have a book published by Harper Collins in bookstores since September 27th. What do you hope people take away from The Monsoon Diaries? [4:57]

Rosa Wang, social impact pioneer, examines how mobile technology frontiers are providing financial access, connectivity, identity and empowerment for people across the world – from Kenya to India. Rosa is the Senior Advisor and former Global Director for Digital Financial Services at Opportunity International. She joins us to share stories from her global journey. Where she has collating first hand insights of resilience from the far reaches of the mobile phone revolution. From bank voice messages in rural dialects to the challenges for women in accessing mobile phones. Rosa unpacks the uncomfortable question of what being poor really means... both the fundamental realities of living on less than $2 a day, and the positive connections these circumstances can forge. Rosa shares why she is championing human stories and making the voices of those less heard – loader. The result… Rosa has compiled the stories she has collected on mobile technology frontiers into her book – Strong Connections: Stories of Resilience from the Far Reaches of the Mobile Phone Revolution. Rosa says: “I wrote this because one day, hopefully soon, I believe that every person on the planet will have their own mobile phone, and when that day arrives, and historians document this remarkable revolution, I want the untold stories of the women in this book to be part of the written record. I want there to be an account of innovative village practices, the rich tapestry of their successes and failures, tales of their resilience and of their dogged hard work.” Listen in to hear more. Thank you to the great team at B&K Auto for once again bringing you the Far Reaches! For the second week in a row, the gang is short a Reacher, which is bound to happen with all the random stuff the gang get into. However, Rawley, Joel and Micah press ahead as Richard deals with the perils of sorting cows on the desert! The gang kick off the episode with the 3 way Reach Around and enjoy some laughs hearing about Joel's comedy club adventure and Ralls turning cows out to pasture. Joel brings up some great thoughts around technology and ranching and how to bring the two closer together while not destroying either. Micah does his best to fill in for Richard and break down the Entertainment Spotlight around Red Meat Republic by Joshua Spect, although it is long, definitely worth the effort! The gang circles back to talk about what car Joel should get again and Ralls brightens the day with his choice of the next Entertainment Spotlight...Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery. During the Pendleton Mixer and Cigar Intellectual Moment of the Week, the crew tackles a question by a listen in North Carolina about beverages at lunch during business. When they finally get around to Grindin the Gears some great debate kicks off around defunding the police and the lack of faith in the news. They finish off by exploring the virtues of Ranch Hand Bumpers during Buying Stuff and try and end on a high note with some of the best things of the week. All in all, they persevere despite the lack of the Bradbury and look forward to what the coming week will hold. Ya'll sit back and enjoy the latest! Special thanks to the gang at B&K Auto Salvage for their awesome sponsorship and support! The gang is fired up and they jump right into it, swinging hard on vaccine passports and reactions. Naturally a bit about their opinion on the Rona and take a moment to think of a local Lake County legend that is battling currently battling it. They also jump into quick discussion of turtles all the way down and taxes before finally gathering themselves up to get back on track and talk about the Entertainment Spotlight of Red Headed Stranger. Which leads to a good discussion on country artists and concerts and songwriting. The Intellectual Moment of the Week leads to discussion on having ID to vote and how to legally offer water to people in line to vote which leads to some excellent Reacher Mail and the word of the week, Empurple... The gang gives Joel some more advice in the new segment, Buying Stuff as he is still searching for the best hay hauling zombie vehicle. They start to wind down with an updated Grinding of the Gears and finish with the Best Things of the Week. This is Far Reaches at it's best, so enjoy! The full squad of Reachers is back, even if Richard is not feeling photogenic. He joins the gang without his video, and to be honest, everyone kind of enjoyed it! They actually missed his smiling face and random backgrounds! The gang have all been busy, with spring approaching and work and life piling on top of each other. Great discussion on Richard's Entertainment Spotlight of the Max Brooks book, Devolution. Highly encourage everyone to give it a listen or a read. Richard takes a listeners suggestion for work of the week, which is Recluse and that causes some actual intellectual discussion amongst the gang. Rawley has the next spotlight, and decides we need a little feel good movie, so he drags out the 1986 classic, Iron Eagle. So strap on your Walkman and get read to tear across the skies! The Reachers debut a new segment this episode, also sponsored by our friends at B&K Auto, called What Grinds My Gears. Joel and Micah lead the charge and do a decent job of killing any political careers either of them may ever have! The guys are down a Reacher this week but press ahead and seem to all try and do their best to make up for the missing conversation of Ralls. Joel and Micah kick off this episode and are soon joined by Richard, as he senses a disturbance in the force and decides he better try and keep them on track! Both Joel and Micah ended up at the Dr. this week, Micah thinks his doctor is much cooler and way more legit than Joels. Joel is continuing to explore the stock market and has started getting some positions in call options, which everyone just shakes their head in like they understand what that is. Richard had a great road trip and gives some great insight into the Carbon Market and Agrivoltaics. The gang dive into a discussion on the current political climate, divide and concur, covid payments, the American "system", universities and the confederate flag. Truly fast paced and interesting discussion, and impressive for this group. Micah leads a brief review on the David Goggins book, Can't Hurt Me which is a phenomenal source of motivation. If you have read the book, you often find yourself saying, "Would Dave have given up?" when they hit a problem and keep on pushing through! Micah had word of the week as well, and took a suggested word from a loyal listener (Thank you Spoon) and discussed Honyonker with the gang. There is some excellent reader mail and feedback from our Bob O'Rourke stories and admiration of Bob. Richard has the next entertainment spotlight and choses the book Devolution by Max Brooks, so be prepared for some interesting discussion around that one for sure! Joel does a stellar Norm McDonald impression and the guys talk about some favorite comedians and being willing to ask for honest feedback even though you probably won't like it. The gang wrap up with the best part of their week, and Micah is stoked to sign up for Starlink internet and hopes Richard will do the same to cure his internet woes. The guys missed Ralls, and but pressed on like a Reacher should. Another amazing episode and one you will mark as your favorite. Thank you again to our good friends at B&K Auto Salvage for bringing you the Far Reaches! As the gang wades further into 2021, come along for the ride as they discuss the recent inauguration, make a few predictions on the coming year and discuss the the merits of judging someone on their deeds and not what they look like or how they identify. Now that football is winding down, Joel is focusing more on the market, which leads to some great conversation on the cattle markets and how farmers and ranchers deal with ever changing risk. Micah finds a water leak in his new house, Richard is learning how to deal with the barrage of questions from his three year old and Rawley is dealing with the solitude of Wallowa County while Mrs. B is on nursing duty. The guys talk about the Mat Best book, Thank You For My Service, and have some dissenting opinions on their review of it. Which leads them to the epiphany that it is still OK to agree to disagree. There is some great discussion on potential upcoming guests and maybe even a Pow Wow Reunion special! Richard is leading the literary adventure for the next episode and points us in the direction of the Hardcore History podcast by Dan Carlin and the Wrath of Khans episodes. This Thanksgiving week edition is proudly brought to you courtesy of our friends at B&K Auto Salvage! The gang starts out down a Reacher, as Joel was hip deep in all things Civil War, AKA the 126 year tradition of Oregon vs Oregon State football. As several members of the Far Reaches Crew are Beaver Believers, Joel was the official representative of the group! And needless to say, he did a tremendous job, as the Beavers surely dashed the national title hopes of the Ducks with their victory! Outstanding conversation this Thanksgiving week as Ralls learned that some people don't much appreciate new fences going up, or falling of their horse for that matter. Quite the story indeed! Richard recounts some of his wild and wooly northern Nevada days and the courting of his bride. The movie of the week provided by Rawley was Trump Card, an in depth look at the current political landscape and the groups that make up the wonderful melting pot known as America! The gang give Joel some cooking tips and discuss the finer points of marital advice...or more importantly when to not say a word. The Intellectual Moment of the week inspires some great presidential history discussion and the word of the week was Cattywampus. Which, as you might agree, is a more than appropriate and timely word! Joel picked the next movie for discussion and deep political reflection, and blessed the gang with his choice of Dazed and Confused!
