What could communication look like in web3? Spam-proof, Anonymous, and Default Public. Shane Mac is building XMTP, a protocol which could become the foundation layer of messaging in the world of wallets and blockchains – like HTTP or SMTP are today.  In this episode of Jorgenson's Soundbox, I continue exploring the world of web3 with my friend and former coworker Shane Mac. Shane is now the cofounder of XMTP, a decentralized and economic messaging protocol being built for web3. During our conversation, we talk about XMTP as a new protocol for building communication tools. We can spam-proof the next generation of the web! How Shane builds company culture to help him compete with world renowned companies and his personal and professional investing strategies. To kick off our conversation, we talk a bit about Shane's decision to move to Nashville, driven by the exhausting culture of work scale at all cost in San Francisco, and the music scene there. Shane then discusses how he came to work with Matt Galligan and start XMTP. When looking for an opportunity to build a new company, he had a lightbulb moment when Robert Leshner, the founder of Compound, presented a communication problem in the web3 space. Shane realized that people who have wallets want to be able to communicate with others that have wallets and to be able to prove ownership, and he recognized the potential for a new messaging communication protocol with the wallet as a means of sending and receiving messages. XMTP was thus founded as a decentralized messaging protocol with a universal backend that developers could build on top of and that we can all be owners of. What is different about the messaging protocol is the goal is to create a network of people with aligned incentives that everyone agrees on and wants to build on top of. Also what's new is that it is part of the public blockchain, and the network protocol can be seen publicly and is economic. The fundamental difference lies in that the content of the message is private, but the senders and receivers are public. Currently, interaction is based on identity before activity and identity is how you get opportunity, but with the new protocol, activity can instead drive interaction and opportunities prior to identity being disclosed. Due to the existence of spam and bad actors in the space, a verification system is needed, and Shane recognizes the wallet as the best identity mechanism. The economics of the messaging protocol will be based on token holdings and pricing set to reach wallet holders. We also discuss how platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., currently control the pipe of interaction and charge brands money to reach you and the potential to instead have individuals create and profit from that fee for themselves. In the second half of the conversation, we explore Shane's ability to create an awesome company culture. Shane says that while he can't compete with renowned companies on having the most interesting idea, he can compete on culture. Shane aims to remove people's anxieties so that they can be more productive. He does so by hiring personal assistants and coaches not only for executives but for everyone, removing the vesting cliff, and teaching people how to quit. We wrap up the conversation by talking about how Shane goes about investing. He says he focuses on what he knows well and believes in. Regarding crypto, he thinks of it as startup investing, and he has invested in Bitcoin and Ethereum and plans to hold for the long term. He also is the General Partner of the Logos Fund which invests similarly in startups, mostly focusing on the seed stage.   Links:    Eric's Newsletter   XMTP.com   How to Quit (and have everyone support you)   Compound    Squared Away   Koinly Topics:   (2:59) - Shane Mac: the maker of parties + Moving to Nashville   (6:33) - Leaving San Francisco   (9:08) - The decision to found another company   (17:20) - How do you go about building a protocol?   (22:41) - The activity before identity paradigm     (26:56) - The valid criticisms of Web3 based on what we know with the issues of Web2   (31:53 - What is different about protocols in the Blockchain era?   (37:36) - Does XMTP have its own token?   (38:05) - What was the decision to make XMTP a company instead of a DAO?   (42:12) - What do you see being built on XMTP?   (51:24) - Creating Meritocracy via making more information public (rename)   (55:32) - Flipping control to the user with when we see ads   (58:20) - To what extent does Web2 get torn down and rebuilt on top of Web3 and how much does Web3 get layered on top of Web2?   (1:05:38) - Is XMTP built on ETH?   (1:08:14) - Commentary on building the XMTP team & culture   (1:29:53) - How to Quit   (1:35:34) - How do you scale trust?   (1:42:25) - The Blockchain as a generational technology   (1:50:19) - What's your skin in the game in regards to cryptocurrency?   (2:03:36) - Wrapping up Additional Episodes If You Enjoyed: SquidDAO: Web3 Project Deep-Dive: Part Crypto Hedge Fund, Part NFT DAO. I've been carrying them in my head for thirty years, and I've been living them. Over time (sadly or fortunately), the thing I got really good at was looking at businesses and figuring out the point of maximum leverage to actually create wealth and capture some of that created wealth. - Naval Ravikant   Seek wealth, not money or status. - Naval Ravikant   Wealth is having assets that earn while you sleep. - Naval Ravikant   Money is how we transfer time and wealth. - Naval Ravikant   Ignore people playing status games. They gain status by attacking people playing wealth creation games.    You're not going to get rich renting out your time. You must own equity—a piece of a business—to gain your financial freedom.  - Naval Ravikant   The most important skill for getting rich is becoming a perpetual learner. You have to know how to learn anything you want to learn. The old model of making money is going to school for four years, getting your degree, and working as a professional for thirty years. But things change fast now. Now, you have to come up to speed on a new profession within nine months, and it's obsolete four years later. But within those three productive years, you can get very wealthy. - Naval Ravikant     Important quotes from the podcast by Naval on Leverage:   “Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will move the earth.”  —Archimedes    To get rich, you need leverage. Leverage comes in labor, comes in capital, or it can come through code or media. But most of these, like labor and capital, people have to give to you. For labor, somebody has to follow you. For capital, somebody has to give you money, assets to manage, or machines. - Naval Ravikant   Fortunes require leverage. Business leverage comes from capital, people, and products with no marginal cost of replication (code and media). - Naval Ravikant   Capital and labor are permissioned leverage. Everyone is chasing capital, but someone has to give it to you. Everyone is trying to lead, but someone has to follow you. - Naval Ravikant   Code and media are permissionless leverage. They're the leverage behind the newly rich. You could own equity as a small shareholder where you bought stock. You could also own it as an owner where you started the company. Ownership is really important.     Everybody who really makes money at some point owns a piece of a product, a business, or some IP. That can be through stock options if you work at a tech company. That's a fine way to start.    But usually, the real wealth is created by starting your own companies or even by investing. In an investment firm, they're buying equity. These are the routes to wealth. It doesn't come through the hours. - Naval Ravikant

This week we continue our in-depth exploration of the individual musical and life journeys that culminated in the creation of Night Demon.  We pick up the story in Ocean City, Maryland, where a chance meeting resulted in Dusty meeting Shane Mac. Together, the two of them formed New Liberty, an ass kicking riff rock band hellbent on living the '80s rock star dream.  After another chance meeting at a singer/songwriter event, New Liberty were invited to Ventura, California to record a demo. Still chasing their pipe dream, Dusty and his bandmates piled into an ancient, decrepit RV and moved cross-country. By chance, they were slated to record their demo with Armand in his studio. Armand and New Liberty hit it off famously, both musically and personally, and Armand joined the band soon after. In this new configuration, New Liberty developed a strong local following and played numerous searing gigs, many of which Jarvis attended as a fan. Meanwhile, Jarvis was pouring his musical energy into Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, exploring different musical terrain, lifting his musicianship out of a one-dimensional rut, and learning volumes about other styles of music, showmanship, and European tour life. Eventually, however, Jarvis began feeling that the Heartbeats project had run its course and was left feeling uninspired. At around the same time, New Liberty imploded when the shifting music industry climate conspired to prevent them from parlaying their homegrown success into something bigger. A perfect storm was brewing. The time was nigh for Night Demon. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. My friend Shane Mac turned me onto this via an incredible book called "Turn The Ship Around" by David Marquet. Since implementing this concept, the culture at Self Publishing School has completely changed. People take ownership, and feel empowered to make their own decisions. The basic logic goes something like this. Errors are basically your customers' way of telling you what services you should offer. Every time your chatbot fails to give them what they want, that's your bot telling you what you should include for the next customer. If you want to learn more awesome chatbot design tips like that one, listen to our interview with Shane above.

"The number one cause of distraction is not what is happening outside of us, but in fact what happens inside of us. The root cause of most distraction is not the external triggers, it's the internal triggers. So, I don't care what life hack or guru does your tells you to do with how to hack back your time. Fundamentally, if we don't first and foremost figure out what we are trying to escape from, what uncomfortable sensation prompts us to look for relief—to look for a psychological pacification from our devices, from television, from too much booze, too much work, too much, whatever—then that becomes a distraction. If we don't deal with that stuff and either fix it or learn methods to cope with it, we are always going to succumb to distraction."

The hope that I have is that (people are) looking around for a little bit, pressing pause and saying, wait a minute. The things that used to be couched as safe are arguably now riskier than ever before. That's true for employment, relationships, identity, so many things. The thing that's going to overpower that is inside us. It's not out there. And that's the part to get people to lean into."

It was possibly the most mind-blowing tech demo in years: During the opening keynote of the Google I/O developers conference, CEO Sundar Pichai showed the company’s AI-driven Assistant making a phone call to a business and carrying out a verbal conversation with the person who answered. What made the demo of the feature, called Duplex, so amazing was the Assistant’s command of natural language – saying “um,” “mm-hmm,” and “ah” at various times – was so masterful that it was apparent the person on the other end had no idea he or she was talking to a machine. It was a very specific situation, but Google Assistant had effectively passed the Turing test. The demo instantly got the tech world’s collective mind a-blazing. Was the Assistant obliged to say it wasn’t a person? How off-track would the conversation have to go for the Assistant to mess up? What happens when an automated system picks up the phone? And maybe most important, when will consumers get their hands on this feature? To try to answer many of those questions, I called up Shane Mac, CEO of Assist, a voice and messaging assistant platform. Mac has been immersed in voice technology and AI for a long time, and he and I had a far-reaching discussion about Google Duplex on the MashTalk podcast, exploring Google Assistant’s impressive progress, the roadblocks ahead, and what happens when this technology scales. Given the current climate — where Silicon Valley companies are routinely criticized for how they seem to prioritize products and progress over customers — some saw the Duplex demo as another example of Silicon Valley hubris, effectively using service workers as guinea pigs. “There are so many questions in this arena,” Mac said. “Bot ethics are finally real. If [this tech] is applied somewhere, and you don’t know it’s a real human, there are massive things that need to built around legal policy, disclosing if it’s a robot or not... because you can see this quickly becoming a really big problem.” When Google Assistant users get their hands on Duplex, the amount of robocalls — in both directions — will certainly increase. Waiting on hold will effectively no longer be an issue for someone with the tech, and sales forces may need to add another layer of human verification — a kind of verbal Captcha — to ensure they don’t get flooded with calls from bots. But what about the strange but obvious consequence of tech like Duplex: Where a growing portion of phone calls is just bots talking to bots? “Bots are going to talk to bots all the time,” Mac predicted. “Everyone’s trying to get to these fully automated experiences on the brand side. But what if the consumer bot gets here first? Then what happens?” At the end of the day, though, this is one tech demo from just one of the many companies aggressively pushing forward into voice tech and digital assistants. This same week, Microsoft showed how its assistant, Cortana, would talk to Amazon Alexa. It was a promising taste of platforms working together, but it also emphasized what the individual platforms are good at, with Alexa handling personal requests and Cortana having domain over more work-related things like calendars and work projects. To Mac, however, this kind of specialization might mean social networks have something new to offer, underpinning the strategy behind Facebook’s rumored smart speaker. “This is where Facebook has an opportunity,” said Mac. “I would watch out for the social platforms getting into voice, because social experiences drive human nature, and it can do things with that social graph that other platforms can’t.”

I learn by mentoring, coaching and teaching. Prior to my startup activity, I was a professional sailor and competed in 2 America's Cups (won one, lost one) and the Whitbread Round the World race (now called the Volvo Ocean Race). what is your passion? Question everything. Asking questions to world leaders in art, business, music, and technology. Lewis's bio: Hi there. My name is Lewis and I want to get real with you for a minute. I've always dreamed big, strived for greatness and deeply cared about people. My dream growing up was to be a professional athlete and be an Olympian. After getting injured while playing professional football, I immediately thought about how to achieve the next dream. Broken, broke, and clueless on how to make money or get a career, my obsession for learning about business, marketing, and adding value to influential people (when I had no value to give) began. Since then it's been a powerful journey for me – becoming a New York Times Bestseller, building up a multi-million dollar online media company, speaking all over the world, advising for billion dollar brands, receiving media praise from places like Details Magazine, being one of “5 Internet Gurus Who Can Make You Rich” and much more. I'm a firm believer that how you feel every moment is more important than what you do or what you have. I got a taste of being a pro athlete for a short amount of time. Knowing what is possible in life when I commit to my vision and pursue it with 100% passion… anything is possible. Living my ideal lifestyle is important to me instead of working to survive life. It's hard to think that without having any business experience I went from sleeping on my sister's couch to running a seven figure business in a couple years. Hustle comes to mind when people ask me how I did it. Lot's of hustle, passion, focus, and consistent vision.
