GARY WRIGHT 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 4 with RAY SHASHO Gary Wright (April 26, 1943 – September 4, 2023) Gary Wright is a celestial keyboard virtuoso, idyllic songwriter, and vocalist with powerful soulful pipes. Wright is an innovator of the synthesizer and over the years has managed to condense his many synthesized melodies into a single keyboard strapped around his neck. Although born and raised in Cresskill, New Jersey, Wright founded the British rock group Spooky Tooth in 1967. Wright would later become most recognized for his two solo hit singles “Dream Weaver” in 1975 and “Love Is Alive” in 1976. Gary Wright will be joining the ‘Sail Rock 2013' tour along with Christopher Cross, Orleans, Firefall, John Ford Coley, Robbie Dupree and Player beginning August 5th in West Allis, Wisconsin. Visit Pollstar.com for all the latest concert dates. SPOOKY TOOTH: Gary Wright joined the band 'Art' in 1967. The ‘V.I.P.'S' morphed into 'Art' after several lineup changes since its inception in 1963. The British R&B music ensemble had featured various distinguished musicians including Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Jimmy Henshaw, Keith Emerson, Luther Grosvenor, Walter Johnstone and Mike Kellie. Keith Emerson (The Nice, ELP) left in 1967 when the name was changed to Art. The band eventually turned into Spooky Tooth with a lineup of Wright (organ, keyboards, and vocals), Harrison (vocals, keyboards) Ridley (bassist), Grosvenor (guitar, vocals) and Kellie (drums). In 1968, Spooky Tooth released their debut album entitled … It's All About. The album featured covers by Janis Ian and Bob Dylan. Most of the other tracks were either written or co-written by Gary Wright. The bands next release Spooky Two (1969) released on Island Records was hailed by critics as one of their finest recordings. The album featured many of the bands standards including “Evil Woman” and “Better by You, Better Than Me” a tune written by Wright and eventually covered by Judas Priest in 1978. Spooky Tooth quickly became a highly sought concert attraction and a mainstay on progressive rock radio. The band shared the stage with such legendary music acts as Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Bassist Greg Ridley left in 1969 to join Humble Pie, Andy Leigh replaced him. Also in 1969, the group released Ceremony (Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry album) a progressive collaboration with the French electronic composer. Session musician: Wright left Spooky Tooth briefly to produce albums for Traffic and Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller and his production company. Gary Wright became an esteemed session musician and was asked to play on George Harrison's triple- album set All Things Must Pass (1970). Wright and Harrison began a long lasting friendship and musical collaboration that included Wright playing or sharing songwriting tasks on several of Harrison's subsequent albums including … Living in the Material World (1973), Dark Horse (1974), Extra Texture (Read All About It)(1975), Thirty Three & 1/3(1976), George Harrison(1979), Cloud Nine (1987). The Last Puff album (1970) primarily featured Mike Harrison while Wright focused on other projects. The release featured an incredible cover version of The Beatles, “I Am The Walrus.” Joe Cocker Grease Band members Henry McCullough, Chris Stainton and Alan Spenner were brought into the studio to work on the album. In 1971, Gary Wright performed “Two Faced Man” with George Harrison on the Dick Cavett Show. He also played piano on Harry Nilsson's #1 hit, a Badfinger cover tune entitled, “Without You.” In 1972, Gary Wright and Mike Harrison reformed Spooky Tooth with a different lineup. The new lineup featured future Foreigner founder and guitarist Mick Jones. Subsequent Spooky Tooth albums … (You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1973), Witness (1973), The Mirror (1974) and Cross Purpose (1999) (Reunion album without Wright, Greg Ridley returned). Spooky Tooth disbanded in 1974. Gary Wright and George Harrison visited India in 1974 as a guest of Ravi Shankar. Wright developed a long-term relationship with Shankar after the visit. SOLO CAREER: Gary Wright released two critically acclaimed solo albums on A&M Records … Extraction in 1971 and Footprint in 1972. Wright signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1974 and achieved his biggest commercial success with the release of The Dream Weaver album (1975). The single “Dream Weaver” reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and #1 on the Cash Box charts. The album also spawned the hit “Love is Alive” (1976) reaching #2 on Billboard's singles chart. The album peaked at #7 on Billboard's Hot 100 albums chart. The song “Dream Weaver” has been spotlighted on numerous television shows and motion pictures. “Love is Alive” was covered by several legendary artists including … Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker and Richie Havens. The Dream Weaver album featured guest musicians …guitarist Ronnie Montrose, drummers Jim Keltner and Andy Newmark, Hammond organist David Foster and Bobby Lyle on additional synthesizers. In 1981, Gary Wright scored again commercially with “Really Wanna Know You” (#16 Billboard Singles Hit). Gary Wright Solo albums … Extraction (1971), Footprint (1972), The Dream Weaver (1975), The Light of Smiles(1977), Touch and Gone (1978), Headin' Home (1979), The Right Place (1981), Who I Am (1988), First Signs of Life (1995), Human Love (1999), Waiting to Catch the Light (2008), The Light of a Million Suns (EP) (2008), Connected (2010). In 2004, Wright, Harrison and Kellie reunited Spooky Tooth for several concerts in Germany. As a result of their triumphant return, they released the Nomad Poets DVD in 2007. The same lineup played a series of European dates in 2008. Most recently: Gary Wright toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band in 2008. In 2010, Wright released his latest studio album entitled Connected and features guest artists … Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Gary Wright is currently writing his 'memoir' for the Penguin Group and should be available sometime near the end of 2014. I had the great pleasure of chatting with Gary Wright recently about ‘Sail Rock 2013,' Spooky Tooth, George Harrison, the music business, metaphysics and much-much more. Support us on PayPal!

American rock band JOURNEY has a style that's hard to define and pigeonhole. The group was formed in San Francisco by members of Steve Miller Band and Santana in 1973. Journey had its biggest commercial success between 1978 and 1987 with Steve Perry as lead vocalist. They released a series of hit songs, including 1981's ‘Don't Stop Believin' which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history. One of its founders, music prodigy NEAL SCHON joins me today to tell us about the band's genesis, Steve Perry's departure and their latest album. The first in eleven years. We also catch up with a pop/rock singer and songwriter whose smooth but gently soulful voice helped earn him a pair of hit singles in the early '80s. Brooklyn born ROBBIE DUPREE used to sing with the group New World Rising. That band's guitarist, NILE RODGERS went on to have an amazing career as a producer, songwriter, and leader of the band CHIC. We meet Robbie at his home in Woodstock NY to hear all about the changes in the music industry and to check on what he's up to today. Say hi to one of Australia's most iconic 70's bands that helped shape the history of the local music scene. JOHN SCHUMANN and REDGUM led the way in proudly telling Australian stories. For the first time, Aussie place names and cultural intricacies became fodder for lyrics and instead of trying to sound American, the band became one of the first to show off the distinctive Aussie accent. If you don't live in Australia it's likely you've never heard the songs before but I assure you, once you've heard them, you'll never forget them! September baseball brings out the worst in you -- or the best, depending how you look at it. The Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays went at it this week at Tropicana Field, exchanging scouting reports and strong words and bean balls and everything in-between. Was Kevin Kiermaier wrong to pick up that piece of paper? Should the Rays have just given it back when Toronto asked? What about Ryan Borucki hitting Kiermaier with a pitch? Mark, Bryson and Jacob unpack every angle of card-gate before discussing the actual baseball that was played this week. Is the offense a concern? What's the status update on George Springer? How awesome would it be to have 35,000 fans back at the Rogers Centre? Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall “There's so much to be said about the power of music, storytelling, and connecting.” — Dianne A. Allen (24:02-24:09) Are you wondering what it’s like to grow up in an environment with different influences? In this episode, we’re going to talk about gifted overexcitabilities with John Hall, a multi-talented musician, singer, and songwriter. He’s well-known both in the music and political world. Part One of ‘Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall’ John and his brothers were expected to excel at whatever they did. He was exposed to music lessons from a young age, and that’s how he got involved in music. From his piano lessons at age 5 to his medal-winning French horn performance at the Ithaca College Music Festival, from his folk days of singing Weavers, Peter Paul and Mary, and Bob Dylan songs, from his obsession with the Ventures, Beach Boys, Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, John Hall learned three things: Play, Write, Listen. Now that he's finished serving two terms as the Congressman from New York's 19th District, John is writing songs again, performing solo and with Orleans, and continuing with his environmental activism. In early 1972, John's local jam band in Woodstock turned into Orleans when first Wells Kelly and then Larry Hoppen joined the ensemble. Later that year, Lance Hoppen joined on bass, freeing Larry to play guitar and keyboard. Orleans recorded four albums in the seventies, scoring radio hits with 'Still The One' and 'Dance With Me'. “As a culture and humanity, we've evolved.” – Dianne A. Allen (26:45-26:47) John left Orleans in 1978 and made two solo records, "John Hall" and "Power." The latter featured the anti-nuclear anthem, which later became the theme of the No Nukes concerts, recorded by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor. Then followed two John Hall Band albums, and the AOR and MTV hit "Crazy (Keep On Falling)." After Wells Kelly's death in 1984, John reunited with Larry and Lance Hoppen, and they were recruited by Tony Brown of MCA Nashville to record there. The result was 1986's "Grownup Children." Since then, John has alternated between recording and touring with Orleans and doing solo projects, including "Recovered," "On A Distant Star," and "Love Doesn't Ask." Part Two of ‘Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall’ Along the way, environmental and political concerns have kept John moving in and out of direct community involvement. He was elected to the Ulster County Legislature in 1989 and served one term in 1990 and '91. In the late 1990s, he was elected twice as trustee of the Saugerties NY Board of Education, where his fellow trustees elected him president. He also served as a volunteer member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's board of directors before running successfully for Congress in 2006. “Live life in a way that's manageable, with structure and support.” – Dianne A. Allen (43:21-43:23) John Hall’s story is empowering because it teaches us that you can be interested in many different things and still be successful regardless of how others perceive you. There’s always more to someone than meets the eye. That’s why we must never judge a book by its cover. John learned how to ski in his forties to be a chaperone with her daughter’s school group. He didn’t just learn it; he mastered it and became the instructor of the year at Hunter Mountain, just south of the village of Hunter, in Greene County, New York, United States. So, if you’re afraid to step into your authenticity zone, don’t get intimidated by people telling you how hard it is. Take the time to explore, follow your inner desire and keep learning. Step into your higher calling, and live in the moment. About John Hall From his piano lessons at age 5 to his medal-winning french horn performance at the Ithaca College Music Festival, from his folk days of singing Weavers, Peter Paul and Mary, and Bob Dylan songs, from his obsession with the Ventures, Beach Boys, Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, John Hall learned to play, write, and listen. As John honed his bass and guitar skills as part of the band Kangaroo, James Taylor was gigging around the corner at the Night Owl with the Flying Machine and Jimi was backing up John Hammond at Village Gate as Jimi James and the Blue Flames. Kangaroo alternated sets for a time with a band called the Castilles, whose lead singer was Bruce Springsteen. During this time, he wrote and directed the music for the Broadway show "Morning, Noon and Night," and 1969's Obie-winning "Honest to God Schnozzola." From the another off-Broadway score came a guitar lick that became the underpinning for "Half Moon," recorded by Janis Joplin on "Pearl." John later penned songs for Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner and many more. After moving to Woodstock, John worked as a studio guitarist for Seals and Crofts, John Simon, and Little Feat, produced Bonnie Raitt’s third album, and toured with Taj Mahal, recording the double album "The Real Thing" at the Fillmore East and West. In early 1972, John's local jam band in Woodstock turned into Orleans when first Wells Kelly and then Larry Hoppen joined the ensemble. Later that year, Lance Hoppen joined on bass, freeing Larry to play guitar and keyboard. Orleans recorded four albums in the seventies, scoring radio hits with 'Still The One' and 'Dance With Me' (both certified over six million airplays in the US, and hundreds of millions of streams). John left Orleans in 1978 and made two solo records, "John Hall" and "Power". The latter featured the anti-nuclear anthem which later became the theme of the No Nukes concerts (organized by Jackson Browne, Raitt, Graham Nash and Hall) and recorded there by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor. Then followed two John Hall Band albums (with John Troy, Bob Leinbach and Eric Parker), and the AOR and MTV hit "Crazy (Keep On Falling)". After Wells Kelly's death in 1984, John reunited with Larry and Lance Hoppen and they were recruited by Tony Brown of MCA Nashville to record there. The result was 1986's "Grownup Children." Since then John has alternated between recording and touring with Orleans, and doing solo projects including "Recovered," "On A Distant Star," and "Love Doesn't Ask," “Rock Me On the Water.” Along the way, environmental and political concerns have kept John moving in and out of direct community involvement. He was elected to the Ulster County Legislature in 1989 and served one term in 1990 and '91. Having learned to ski in his 40s, John became a certified PSIA Level 2 instructor, named 1997 Instructor of the Year by Hunter Mountain in the Catskills. He is also a lifelong sailor and has written for Cruising World Magazine. In the late 1990's, he was elected twice as trustee of the Saugerties NY Board of Education, where his fellow trustees elected him president. He also served as a volunteer member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's board of directors before running successfully for Congress in 2006. He was re-elected in 2008. Congressman John Hall represented New York's 19th district until 2011, when he returned to private life, and a life of music. After the Fukushima meltdowns in March 2011, he wrote and recorded the song "I Told You So," which he recorded and later performed with Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and others as part of a MUSE/No Nukes concert in Mountainville CA. Since reuniting with Orleans in August 2013, John has crossed the country half a dozen times, sharing the stage with artists including Christopher Cross, Poco, Firefall, Leo Sayer, Al Stewart, Player, Robbie Dupree, Gary Wright, and Ambrosia A live recording of John with Jonell Mosser has just been released. Drawn from a 1994 performance at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock NY, the record shows Jonell and John as a combustible duo, her vocals and his guitar rocking the house. Since the pandemic caused all concerts to be canceled or postponed, John has been working on recordings and videos with Orleans, the latest song “Home” having been written with Johanna Hall and Don Schlitz. He is also finishing recording and mixing tracks for his forthcoming solo album “Reclaiming My Time” which will be released this winter Since reuniting with Orleans in August 2013, John has crossed the country half a dozen times, sharing the stage with artists including Christopher Cross, Firefall, Al Stewart, Player, Robbie Dupree, Gary Wright, and Ambrosia. A book detailing his journey from rocker to representative, "Still the One: A Rock'n'Roll Journey to Congress and Back," is available here from Amazon. How to Connect with Dianne A. ¿No habías nacido? ¿Dónde estabas el año que mataron a John Lennon? ¿Qué estabas haciendo en 1980? ¿Qué música escuchabas, a qué conciertos fuiste? Kari connects Lauren to her mother as well as her songwriting partner, as they talk about the catalyst that made Lauren channel what became the international hit "Fallen" from the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack and the synchronicity of how it ended up in the movie, validations that she was meant to be on this path of music, like her musical moment with Bette Midler at her house, having singers like Gladys Knight, Leo Sayer, Dusty Springfield and Johnny Mathis sing her songs, how she started on her life path where her father owned the pet shop that inspired the Patti Page classic "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" and how she ended up with Warner Bros. even though her hero Frank Zappa asked her to be on his label, her new CD "The Warner Bros. Years," her 1979 and 1981 albums available on CD for the first time in the U.S., which features Doobie Brothers Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons, Toto's Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro, members of Little Feat, Ronnie Montrose and Robbie Dupree.

Last week was all about the mind so this week I focused on the physiological response the body has when we apply tension. I offer up a simple way of understanding muscle contractions and how they apply to different training techniques and exercises. We go DEEP inside the tissues that we put inTENSION during our bouts of training. I also share the pros and cons of strength, power, eccentric, isometric and high triplexity training. Unfortunately for you… I also found some more renditions of Black Coffee by Robbie DuPree while slurping that hot black goodness in your earbuds. It's been 11 years since our last connection with Robbie Dupree. At the time, he had just released his album ‘Time And Tide’, which featured his steady stable of musical colleagues - David Sancious, Rick Chudacoff, Peter Bunetta, Leslie Smith, and the late Larry Hoppen. Since that time, and with an understanding of the ever-changing landscape of the music business, Robbie has decided that writing and producing a full album of new songs isn’t on his radar. Instead, he’s taken the path of releasing single tracks at his own pace and when the inspiration strikes him. Along with his 2012, four song EP ‘Arc Of A Romance’, he has recently released three, beautifully produced singles with top-notch lyrical content and musicianship. For Robbie, it’s all about quality over quantity and it’s apparent in these new tracks. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome, Robbie Dupree.

Robbie Dupree scored big out of the gate with the enduring "Steal Away" which reached #6 in 1980 and the follow up "Hot Rod Hearts" also did well on the pop charts. But, after the relative disappointment of his second album, 1981's Street Corner Heroes, Robbie's plans changed. Thankfully, there was still a hunger for Robbie in the Asian market and a new record deal allowed him to continue to make music. It may not have gotten the wide distribution he was used to, but it would keep him viable and he's continued to make music ever since like 1987's Carried Away and 1993's Walking On Water. These days, the rise of "Yacht Rock" and the tours, radio stations, and fanbase devoted to it have given him a new lease on life. We talk about all of it! Plus, earlier this year his first two albums were FINALLY released on cd by Blixa Sounds! Robbie's an artist where going deep in their catalog is well worth your time. http://www.robbiedupree.com/
The musical landscape of the of early 1980’s was an unique one. Disco had died down, yet MTV hadn’t quite taken hold yet. The charts were ruled by mellow recordings full of lush arrangements. Now, years later, this style of music is being called Yacht Rock. One such artist having hits back then was Robbie Dupree, who hit #6 on the Billboard charts in 1980 with “Steal Away.” Then, a few months later, found himself back in the Top 20 with “Hot Rod Hearts.” Blixa Sounds is issuing for the first time on CD, the first two albums from Robbie Dupree, remastered, and featuring bonus tracks. We talk the crazy events that got him signed to Elektra, playing in an early band with Chic’s Nile Rodgers, and earning a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Jimmy Fallon's "I love this guy!" favorite Yacht Rocker Robbie Dupree and legendary rock and roll chronicler David Hepworth join me at my table on Talkish with Halli Casser-Jayne, The Halli Casser-Jayne Show for some rock and rolling conversation. Jimmy Fallon loves Robbie Dupree, and for good reason: Just listen to Durpree's music. It's been a long and winding road for Dupree but he thinks of himself as one of the “lucky ones”. From his tough beginnings in Brooklyn, to his Top Ten hits, ‘Hot Rod Hearts' and ‘Steal Away', which earned him a Grammy nomination in the early 80's for Best New Artist, Robbie Dupree's career has twisted and turned, traveled the peaks and the valleys of the ever-changing music industry. From the rich creative atmosphere of the late Sixties through his Woodstock years that were the Seventies, to his chart busting hits of the early Eighties and onward, Dupree's talent has never stagnated, ever-evolving, his associations with some of the greats of the music industry -- David Sancious, Larry Hoppen, Leslie Smith, Rick Chudacoff, and Peter Bunetta seeping into his musical soul. Eleven albums later with his contribution to the genre known as Yacht Rock, Dupree, it can be safely said, has met his heart's desire and reached the musical promised land. We steal away with Dupree in our first half-hour.Author David Hepworth begins his new book UNCOMMON PEOPLE, THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ROCK STARS with this declaration: “The age of the rock star, like the age of the cowboy has passed.” Neil Young, are you listening? In a rock and rollin' pep rally and memorial, Hepworth's elegy takes us on the long and winding road through rock and roll history, the up and down beats of an era that offered swagger and recklessness, charisma, self-belief, good hair and above all was riff with talent we could only wish to have. Larger than life but also like us, names like Harrison and Morrison, Elvis and Lewis, Nicks and Joplin, Chuck Berry, Madonna, Bowie, Prince and more come to life on the pages of Hepworth's book that tells the tales of the uniquely motivated nobodies who went about turning themselves into the ultimate somebodies, who shaped our realities and titillated our fantasies because, after all, UNCOMMON PEOPLE isn't just their story - it's our as well. Hepworth, a legend in his own right has launched several successful British magazines, during his long and storied career. He presented the definitive BBC rock music program Whistle Test and anchored the coverage of Live Aid in '85. He has won Editor and Writer of the Year awards from the Professional Publishers Association and the Mark Boxer Award from the British Society of Magazine Editors. He is the radio columnist for the Guardian and a media correspondent for the newspaper, and the author of NEVER A DULL MOMENT. For more information visit Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.

The first two WWE albums, The Wrestling Album and Piledriver, are discussed by Jason Mann and Patrick Brogan of The Unemployed Historian. They talk about the alternative universe in which Hulk Hogan had a boring theme, performances at the first Slammy Awards, the times charisma overcomes a lack of singing ability and the times it doesn't, the raw sexuality of Jimmy Hart, the many skills of Rick Derringer and Cyndi Lauper, and how girls in cars should be very afraid of Robbie Dupree. #wrestling #prowrestling #rasslin #WWE #music Original airdate: 6/17/13

It’s a rarity these days to listen to a new album where most every track is so good that you end up playing it over and over again. But when it does happen, you definitely realize that a little magic was added during the writing and recording process. Veteran keyboardist, synthesist, and songwriter, Bill LaBounty, has delivered such a project with the release of Back To Your Star. For his seventh solo release, Bill brings together a star lineup of musicians who’ve helped create the solid foundation for success. Some of the contributors include David Hungate, Larry Carlton, Steve Wariner, Danny Parks, Robbie Dupree, and other star musicians. Produced by Danny Parks and Bill LaBounty, Back To Your Star is a sequence of stories that will let you to not only dig a musical groove, but also appreciate a lyrical flow that is almost poetry. It’s jazzy, smooth, and grooves nice and deep. Inside MusiCast welcomes a true classic musician Bill LaBounty.
For many artists who follow their heart’s desire, the roads that lead to the promised land of musical success can be long and winding. Looking back on the road that Robbie Dupree has traveled, he’s found that he’s been one of the “lucky ones”. From his tough beginnings in Brooklyn, to his Top Ten hits, ‘Hot Rod Hearts’ and ‘Steal Away’, which earned him a Grammy nomination in the early 80’s for Best New Artist, you’ll find that Robbie’s career has been a wonderful journey that has crossed paths with timely opportunities. His newly released CD entitled ‘Time And Tide’ is a product of his high standards in writing, engineering and musicianship. He also has surrounded himself with musicians who he’s worked with over the past years - David Sancious, Larry Hoppen, Leslie Smith, Rick Chudacoff, and Peter Bunetta – all excellent musicians in their own right. Robbie Dupree has definitely reached his promised land, creating music on his terms. Inside MusiCast welcomes Robbie Dupree.
