Welcome back to our Tiling Like a Pro series! In Parts 1 and 2, Tony Scuderi laid the groundwork—literally—by covering tile selection, surface prep, and floor tiling techniques. Now, it's time to shift our focus upward to a key design feature that can transform any kitchen or bathroom: the backsplash. While backsplashes may seem like a smaller tiling project, they pack a big visual punch and require just as much planning and precision as larger installations. From choosing the right materials to handling tricky outlets and achieving clean lines, this part of the process is where creativity meets craftsmanship.Today Gil Olachea will walk you through what it takes to tile a backsplash like a pro—whether you're going bold with patterned tiles or keeping it classic with subway. Let's turn that blank wall into a stunning focal point. We will cover the following in this podcast and will continue on May 19th with part II of backsplash installation. Why do I need a back-splashConsiderationsEquipmentLayout & Focal PointMaterialsThis podcast sponsored by Monogram.Com
Over the past four episodes in this series, the Night Owl team has been immersed in a chilling investigation of the Sunset Strip Comedy Club, located on Austin's legendary 6th Street. From eerie disembodied voices and shadow figures to a haunting presence in the back stairwell, the team has uncovered a disturbing pattern of paranormal activity tied to the building's long and mysterious past. Early on, they uncovered the tragic story of John Waller Stephens Jr., whose alleged suicide by self-administered Lysol ingestion was thought to haunt the club, but the investigation has since revealed far more than they could have expected. In Parts 2 and 3, psychic mediums Jeffery and Kate the Brave helped validate staff experiences, while introducing new and unexpected spirits. Jeffery even identified a spirit named "Hank" who had no connection to the original story of John's death. And Kate brought to light that the negative energy in the building might not be tied to John at all—but to something darker lurking in the shadows. Then, in Part 4, a game-changing revelation completely shook their understanding of John's death.Nicole Riccardo, a trusted member of the paranormal community, revealed that she had investigated the speakeasy below the Sunset Strip, Eden, years earlier. Through extensive research, she uncovered startling contradictions in the narrative surrounding John Waller Stephens Jr.'s death. Newspaper articles described his death as the result of a car accident—no mention of Lysol or suicide. Even more puzzling was the strange police report showing that, after the accident, John was driven across town, past his house and two hospitals, directly to his workplace at Wilson Furniture Company—now the very building they had been investigating. This discovery raised more questions than ever about the true circumstances of his death. Now, armed with new evidence and insights, including the help of Nicole and the team of psychics, the Night Owl team returns to the Sunset Strip Comedy Club determined to uncover the truth. Will the investigation reveal what truly happened to John Waller Stephens Jr., and what dark forces are still at play in this historic building? Join them as they continue their journey to solve this mystery and confront whatever spirits may be haunting the Sunset Strip Comedy Club in Austin, Texas. This is Part 3 of a three part conversation with Michaela Hempen and Carmen Heritier. In the spring of 2024 Carmen sent her three year old quarter horse mare, Malu, to Michaela for three months of training. Malu was like a sponge. She soaked up all the lessons. In this episode we contrast what it was like to work with a well prepared young horse who likes people with that of restarting Michaela's mare Blondie. In Parts 1 and 2 we reviewed Blondie's training background. In this episode Michaela shares more of the details of her training. She describes the long-term impact of the physical and emotional compression that Blondie endured in her early training before coming to Michaela. Blondie's training background is a common one. The contrast between the two horses highlights what a gift it is to give a horse a good start to their training.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: 5. Moral Value for Sentient Animals? Alas, Not Yet, published by Roger Dearnaley on December 27, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Part 5 of AI, Alignment, and Ethics. This will probably make more sense if you start with Part 1. TL;DR In Parts 1 through 3 I discussed principles for ethical system design, and the consequences for AIs and uploads, and in Part 4, I discussed a principled way for us to grant moral value/weight to a larger set than just biological humans: all evolved sapient beings (other than ones of types we cannot form a cooperative alliance with). The history of liberal thought so far has been a progressive expansion of the set of beings accorded moral value (starting from just the set of privileged male landowners having their own military forces). So, how about animals? Could we expand our moral set to all evolved sentient beings, now that we have textured vegetable protein? I explore some of the many consequences if we tried this, and show that it seems to be incredibly hard to construct and implement such a moral system that doesn't lead to human extinction, mass extinctions of animal species, ecological collapses, or else to very ludicrous outcomes. Getting anything close to a good outcome clearly requires at least astonishing levels of complex layers of carefully-tuned fudge factors baked into your ethical system, and also extremely advanced technology. A superintelligence with access to highly advanced nanotechnology and genetic engineering might be able to construct and even implement such a system, but short of that technological level, it's sadly impractical. So I regretfully fall back to the long-standing solution of donating second-hand moral worth from humans to animals, especially large, photogenic, cute, fluffy animals (or at least ones visible with the naked eye) because humans care about their well-being. [About a decade ago, I spent a good fraction of a year trying to construct an ethical system along these lines, before coming to the sad conclusion that it was basically impossible. I skipped over explaining this when writing Part 4, assuming that the fact this approach is unworkable was obvious, or at least uninteresting. A recent conversation has made it clear to me that this is not obvious, and furthermore that not understanding this is both an x-risk, and also common among current academic moral philosophers - thus I am adding this post. Consider it a write-up of a negative result in ethical-system design. This post follows on logically from Part 4. so is numbered Part 5, but it was written after Part 6 (which was originally numbered Part 5 before I inserted this post into the sequence).] Sentient Rights? 'sentient': able to perceive or feel things - Oxford Languages The word 'sentient' is rather a slippery one. Beyond being "able to perceive or feel things", the frequently-mentioned specific of being "able to feel pain or distress" also seems rather relevant, especially in a moral setting. Humans, mammals, and birds are all clearly sentient under this definition, and also in the the common usage of the word. Few people would try to claim that insects weren't: bees, ants, even dust mites. How about flatworms? Water fleas? C. Obviously if we're going to use this as part of the definition of an ethical system that we're designing, we're going to need to pick a clear definition. For now, let's try make this as easy as we can on ourselves and pick a logical and fairly restrictive definition: to be 'sentient' for our purposes, an organism needs to a) be a multicellular animal (a metazoan), with b) an identifiable nervous system containing multiple neurons, and c) use this nervous system in a manner that at least suggests that it has senses and acts on these in ways evolved to help ensure its survival or genetic fitness (as one would exp...

Environmentally-Safe Technology – Part 3 Guest Cecelia Doucette, Director of Massachusetts for Safe Technology, Education Services Director for Wireless Education Invisible and unseen, electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation is increasingly impacting environmental sustainability, human health and safety. EMF emitters include cell towers, cell phones, portable tablets, smart meters, and wearables, like fitbits and ear pods. Few people realize how much the growing wireless technology sector contributes to carbon emissions, climate change and chronic health issues. The high energy requirements of wireless translate into high carbon emissions. One report states that “one click on Google uses about 11-watt hours of energy – the same amount it takes to run a compact fluorescent light bulb for an hour.” This episode leads deeper into all these aspects of wireless technology. The good news is that there are many ways people can rewire their premises and rethink their technology use in order to reduce climate impact, health risks and illness - at home, at school and in the workplace. In Parts 1 and 2, guest Cecelia Doucette, Director of Massachusetts for Safe Technology, introduced the topics of safe technology, wireless education, community action, coalition building and the need for well-informed legal and legislative policies. Doucette returns in Part 3 to deliver more. Doucette's organization is building coalitions of citizens who act as advocates on a town-by-town basis to educate their neighbors and work proactively with local governments, legislators and state agencies for safe, sustainable technology. Massachusetts has led the nation for several years with bills to address the health, environmental and economic impact of today's wireless technology. Doucette helped her children's schools become the first in the nation to take precautionary measures with wireless technology. She is also the Education Services Director with the international non-profit Wireless Education, which offers affordable 30-minute on-line technology safety training for Schools & Families and Corporate Safety Induction. Communication has always been a major challenge both in the business world and in the Body of Christ - and can be even more challenging for those of us who are members of the Body of Christ within the world of business. Perhaps the most critical and challenging component of our communication comes as we work to communicate across generations. We know that it is essential to share wisdom and experience, but how we do that can look substantially different if you are 28 than it does if you are 82. This episode gathers Pinnacle Forum Partners from various age ranges to discuss how we can bridge the gap in many areas such as expectations, understanding historical context and upbringings, technologies and various preferred methods of communicating. If you have multi generations in your business or organization, then this 3 part series will be helpful to you. “There's a lot of evil and hopelessness out in the world, but we don't have to experience that when we have each other and when we know Christ,” explains co-host Linda Hutchinson. Emotional wellness within a relationship is what keeps marriages healthy and strong year after year. In Parts 1 and 2 of their Summer of Love Series, co-hosts Merrill and Linda Hutchinson shared their Marriage Assessment tool for evaluating the quality of a marriage, breaking it down into four categories, emotional connectedness, spiritual connectedness, physical intimacy, and communication skills. Today, Merrill and Linda discuss emotional connectedness and provide five specific ways to reignite the spark, so you can both begin to dream again for the future you are building together.Emotional wellness is all about how you and your partner feel about each other. Think about how you felt about your spouse back when you were still dating. Do you still feel that same level of excitement now? Do you still dream for your future with them in mind? If you and your partner have lost some of this emotional connection, don't worry. You can start to rekindle emotional wellness through intentional communication and empathy. Check in on your partner's emotional state, making note of how they are doing, and doing what you can to lighten their load. Remember that when you decided to marry, two became one. Try to view situations from your partner's perspective. Fuel one another's hearts and the hope for the future you will share together will begin to flourish again. Consider whether your actions are helping or hurting your partner's heart. You both decided to commit your lives to one another and that means that you cannot be selfish with your behavior. Complete the linked Marriage Assessment to see where you and your partner stand on emotional connectedness and start taking steps today to reignite dreaming with one another. Quotes“Sometimes we have very unrealistic expectations and we really set our partner up for failure when we put them on a pedestal, when we expect them to complete us, and to give us something that really God is the one that's intended to give us, not our partner.” (8:26-8:45 | Linda)“Let's go about pursuing those dreams and seeking out that connection with your partner the right healthy way.” (10:27-10:33 | Linda)“Are you helping or hurting your partner's heart?” (18:07-18:09 | Linda)“When you committed your life to one another, you committed to share the load together.” (23:37-23:42 | Linda)“The key is empathy.” (24:14-24:15 | Merrill)“There's a lot of evil and hopelessness out in the world, but we don't have to experience that when we have each other and when we know Christ.” (25:55-26:02 | Linda)LinksSummer of Love Assessment: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZPpGt0BsmNwkaBsUSwoUBTsYtf4K4dDFqJJI1uDxoOs/edit?usp=sharingYouTube: https://youtu.be/ubpZ1AggkiU Podcast:https://www.buzzsprout.com/636718/13113598-rock-solid-families-podcast-summer-of-love-series-part-3-emotional-wellness-episode-245.mp3?download=trueWebsite | https://www.rocksolidfamilies.org/ Support the show
After another hectic J.League week (and a bit later than scheduled), a new JTET episode is turned loose on an unsuspecting and ill-prepared populace! In Parts 1 and 2, James Taylor and Jon Steele take turns to review all of last weekend's J2 action (Round 20 of the season) - you'll hear James from 01:45 to 05:30 with 5 of the Round 20 matches, and Jon from 05:30 to 17:00 with the rest. Then in Part 3, Jon sat down with special guest (and Omiya supporter) Steve Fryer (@ardija01talk on Twitter) for a deep dive into how the season has been going for the orange side of Saitama in 2023 (spoilers: not that well so far!). Jon and Steve talked all things Omiya from 17:15 to 49:00, then worked together to preview the upcoming weekend's J2 fixtures (Round 21) from 49:00 to 01:05:00. In serious danger of J2 overkill, Part 4 sees the ever-reliable Mike 'The Magic' Innes switch things up with the 'J-Talk: Short Corner' mini-pod. Mike covers all of last weekend's J3 action (Round 13), and previews the upcoming Round 14, from 01:05:00 to the end of the show. Thanks to everyone for the support, and your patience with the slow upload this week (real life got a bit too real for everyone this week)!
In Part 3, Lisa and Kyle conclude their discussion of the 1994 murder-for-hire of Farah Baquer Fratta, a mother of three gunned down in her garage in Humble, Harris County, Texas. In Parts 1 and 2, they talked about the case against Farah's estranged husband, Robert Fratta, who was executed on January 10, 2023 and Joseph Prystash, a felon and gym rat who acted as Fratta's middleman. In this episode, they talk about the case against Howard Paul Guidry, the trigger man. They talk about the case against Guidry, his first trial and conviction, which was vacated by a federal judge in September 2003, his re-trial, direct appeal and state and federal post-conviction claims, which concluded with the denial of Guidry's petition to the United States Supreme Court in 2022.
Part 1Navigating our way through the job market can be challenging and even ominous to deal with. In, some cases candidates can be placed easily and in other cases, candidates have gone through one rejection after another with no hope in sight. This can very well be the case for Neurodivergent talent, despite their education or experience. To talk about the current job market and to give some helpful insight, I am joined by Fran Moisa. In Parts 1 and 2 of this interview, Fran and I look into and examine the recruitment process and how it can become more inclusive of Neurodivergent talent.__________________________________Fran MoisaWebsiteLinkedIn__________________________________Where you can find me:Website: https://www.josephkmuscat.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/JosephKMuscatConsultingLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/joseph-k-muscat-consultinigTwitter: https://twitter.com/JosephKMuscatYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCa7X1BiEAyMa74Ijp58v0wSocial Media Groups:LinkedIn GroupFacebook GroupSupport the show
Have you ever thought about why the average human lifespan is 80 years? Or why smaller animals, like mice, live for much shorter periods compared to large animals like blue whales? To help answer these questions, we're joined by Geoffrey West, Shannan Distinguished Professor and Former President of the Santa Fe Institute. Geoffrey will introduce us to the concept of scaling in complex systems, and how it helps explain not just lifespan, but a whole range of physiological characteristics in mammals. In Parts 2 and 3, he will explain what creates these laws, and how they apply not just to mammals, but to companies and cities as well. In Parts 1-4, of “The Stage Is Being Set!” we addressed some of the many prophetic precursors that are preparing the world for the entrance of the Antichrist and his global reign that will enslave every man and woman on earth who have been left behind after the Rapture of God's legitimate and Blood Bought Church. We covered such things as “Global Tracking;” “Quantum Dot Computing;” Quantum Dot Vaccines;” “The arrival of five Red Heifers in Jerusalem which are needed for sacrifices to begin, and which signals the soon rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem – or at least a tent-like structure like that which was erected by Moses and which will be used until the Third Temple is constructed;” “The Global Brain;” and “The investigation into the mindset and actions of Klaus Schwab and Yuval Noah Harari, two of Lucifer's agents of darkness, who are working feverishly to bring to completion their “Global Reset” agenda and Transhumanism goals which will be an integral part of the re-engineering of humanity. We also learned that the technological and scientific advancements that are now in place – many of which we have covered through “Love's Last Call” - and which are rapidly evolving, make it certain that we are truly in the last prophetic minutes on God's Prophetic Calendar, and that now is the time to pay even stricter attention to the Holy Spirit as He leads us into all Truth. And with that sacred exhortation to motivate us, in Part Five of our Study, we are going to begin to address what I believe is the most important and critical component to those things that are setting the stage for the Antichrist's global reign, and the world's worship which has been Lucifer's rebellious and pride-filled goal from the beginning – It is the “One World Religion” that is already dressed in her nuptial array to serve the “Man of Lawlessness” as his darkened and adulterous bride – THE CHURCH OF ROME!Support the showVisit our website: https://agapelightministries.com/
In Parts 1-3 of “God's Prophetic Timeline – His Calendar of Last Day's Events,” we learned that in perfect prophetic calendar precision, the Passover – which was the first Feast that God had ordained as a perpetual ordinance for the children of Israel to observe - took place on the 14th day of the month of Nissan when the lamb was to be slaughtered. Yeshua HaMashiah – Lord Jesus the Messiah – fulfilled this sacred requirement in 30 AD when on the 14th day of Nissan He was crucified and died for the sins of the world. Hell and death would now forever “pass over” those who would put their full trust in the Son of God Who became our substitute by taking sin's punishment we deserved, upon Himself.Matthew 27:51, records that at the moment our Savior said “It is Finished! and died, the curtain that hung before the Holy of Holies was rent in two, granting forever access to the Father through the Blood of Jesus! The next Feast to be celebrated was the Feast of Unleavened Bread – which is symbolic of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, and the Spotless Lamb of God Who was without sin or blemish, and therefore a Perfect and Holy Offering. It was observed on the day following Passover. In Part 4, we will be addressing the “Feast of First Fruits,” the “Feast of Pentecost,” and the “Day of Atonement,” and the “Feast of Tabernacles.” We will then pick up in our next segment with “The Prophecy of the Week of Millenniums” which should stir our hearts with confirmation that we are surely the last generation – and the one in which the very last things on His Prophetic Calendar are being fulfilled.Support the show

How do we view difficulty when it comes into our lives? In Parts 1 and 2 of this series, we looked at the issue of perspective, which is a critical part of having a strong foundation for life. Pastor and best-selling author Tim Keller says, “We all have a basic motivational drive. Every human heart has something that drives them. It gets us out of bed and it gets us through life. It moves us to do what we do and for most of us, I believe what drives us is fear. After all these years of pastoring, I truly think this is it. The fear of missing out, the fear of not proving ourselves, the fear of not living up, of being somebody, the fear of failure, the fear of death.” Today and for Part 4 we’re going to go deeper and look at how we live our lives and how we respond to the storms of life. This is Part 3 of a 4-Part series. I hope you enjoy it!

You may wonder in the instant messaging, social media world we live in now, whether building an email list is still worth it. The resounding answer is YES! As fabulous as social media is, building an email list means building a database of very targeted subscribers. Anyone who's willing to trade an email address for your information is someone who's very interested in what you have to offer. It doesn't get much more targeted than that. In todays podcast I'm walking you through the 6 Steps to Build an Email List of Subscribers who Love to Hear From You! In fact this is Part 1 of what will ultimately be a 3 part podcast series. In todays episode I walk you through the 6 steps to getting your email funnel setup; How to create an attractive lead generation offer including all the different types of lead magnet you could offer and how to start building your list without a lead magnet. Which email provider should you sign up for? I've been through quite a few and recently did a quite intensive costing exercise for my own business. Here's my conclusion. The 5 golden rules of creating a high converting landing page and the tools to help you do that, (plus a throwback to the days of building landing pages on Kompozer). Why your thank you page is the second most important page in your lead generating funnel and what should be on it. Your first follow up email. What it should achieve and some do's and don'ts. Nurturing your audience. The most important thing to always remember when creating all content including follow up emails. In Part 3 Michele Pouliot describes how she assembles a freestyle routine using back chaining. In Parts 1 and 2 of our conversation with Michele we learned how she uses platforms to teach the foundation behavior that she uses in her freestyle routines. Now in this episode she describes how she links these behaviors together to create a consistent performance. We make the connection to dressage tests and other patterns that we ride. So even if you can't see yourself ever teaching a liberty freestyle routine, there's a lot here for horse people.

Richard and his team pioneered the photographic and computer effects techniques that made TRON a visual masterpiece which has only grown more sublime in the minds of TRON fans nearly 40 years on. Today we cover Richard's early years, his light show Rainbow Jam that toured with The Grateful Dead, and how happenstance helped Richard land his first job with Robert Abel and Associates, where he pioneered effects techniques such as "Candy Apple Neon" and made many award winning commercials including the 7 Up bubbles commercial. In Parts 2 and 3 to air later, we deep dive into TRON and how Richard's foundational work led to the conceptualization and implementation of the effects techniques in TRON. We also talk about the recent traumatic event in Richard's life when he suffered a stroke, and how he's recovering and going forward creatively. END OF LINE

In Parts 9 & 10 of our Shroud series, we shall be assessing the second major “Ordinary Artistic” mechanism- the Powder-Rubbing and/or Dusting technique.
As we finished January it looked like the stock market could do no wrong. Investors were all-in on stocks. Investor sentiment was downright giddy. Cash positions were at generational lows. Everything was awesome. Then February arrived. The first few weeks were dramatic. There were days when the Dow Jones Industrials were down 1500 points. 500-800 intraday swings were almost becoming normal after literally a year where there was nary a price change greater or less than 2 percent. There are so many reasons being cited. At the end it was a stressful month for investors. For me it was shopping time. I was looking to buy back into some broad market ETF's but the price falls were not deep enough to justify. So I'm happy to wait. As bad as watching the markets go down 1000 points, the reality is it only represented a 2-4 percent drop. Put this into context, on Black Monday in 1987, the Dow Jones Industrials went down over 20 percent. THAT is a crash. What happened in February was a flesh wound…if that. Context. I had my list of stocks and it was just a matter of jumping on the one's that were taking a big time beating. A few did pop up and I jumped in. I made quite a few moves and so I decided to break them down into a series of podcasts. In Part 1, I'll share the decisions involving buying more shares of stocks and ETF's I already own as well as selling. In Parts 2, 3, and 4 I will share my thought processes that went into buying some new stocks.
On January 1st, enthusiasm is in the air. We are reinvigorated after a Christmas break and often motivated to make significant changes in our lives. However, fast-forward several weeks and the numbers don't look too good - 92% of us will have broken our New Year's resolution and slipped back into our old ways. This special 4-part podcast series is designed to help you stay in the 8%, offering practical tools, tips and strategies for how to have your best year yet. In Parts 1-3, Pete discussed transforming our resolutions into revolutions, desperation vs. inspiration as driving forces and how to make and break habits. In Part 4, Pete concludes the series by sharing with us the secrets behind changing an ordinary day into a great day and the massive impact this can have on us. What does a great day look like? Many of us make the mistake of sitting back and waiting for a good day to come to us like sort of miracle. Unfortunately, great days don't happen by chance - but happen when we take a series of positive steps to master the mundane and set ourselves up to win. By following the PERMA model of happiness, we can not only be successful but also feel happy and content by the time we go to bed. Pete shares with us his 'Miracle Morning' rituals including sleeping right, rising early, journalling (and drawing!) and eating/drinking right and how it has had a transformational effect on helping him to achieve his goals. In Part 3, Pete discusses the mechanics of achieving our goals through the power of habits and effective habit formation. We are all made up of a series of habits, designed to help us survive and act instinctively during stressful periods. Habits are often perceived to be either 'good' or 'bad', but in reality, habits are simply a series of thoughts or actions designed to provide a standard outcome. Pete challenges us to think about what habits we have and more importantly, asks us to question whether our habits serve us in achieving our goals. Pete goes on to discuss the art of excellence as a set of habits rather than a single act; sharing practical tools including a visualisation exercise to help develop the Excellence mindset. Kuldrin’s KryptS01E11-Pt 3 Red Flags, Fake Doms, & PredatorsFebruary 20th, 2017IntroThis is Kuldrin’s Krypt season 1 episode 11 for February 20th, 2017.(start theme pre-roll) Welcome to Kuldrin’s Krypt I'm your host Master Kuldrin. If you are new to the show this is a place to dispel myths, get rid of stereotypes, and answer your questions about BDSM. You can call in at 865-268-4005 to leave your question or visit the Krypt at kudrinskrypt.com. On this episode of Kuldrin’s Krypt we are going to wrap up our 3 part conversation about red flags, fake doms & predators.Rules to Love by:Safe, sane, consensual, informedKNKI: Knowledge, No Intolerence, Kindness, Integrity“Submission is not about authority and it’s not about obedience; it is all about relationships of love and respect.” -Wm. Paul YoungThe last two weeks we discussed Red Flags and Fake Doms so if you missed that you will need to go back and listen to episodes 109 and 110 before listening to this episode. As usual, this is partly taken from an article and partly my own experience. You can find the link to the submissiveguide.com article in the show notes at http://kuldrinskrypt.com/111 Lets get started. In Parts 1 and 2, we looked at the information that you should try to gather when starting to interact with an unknown Dom/me. However, there are other warning signs that can appear once you start to develop a relationship with your new Dom/me.Evaluating your trainingOnce you start in training you have a better chance to evaluate your new Dom/me. You should always allow yourself permission evaluate your training by asking yourself: Is the Dom creating a positive learning environment, or, do they make you feel that you are constantly failing their orders? Was it really a newbie mistake, or, is there a lack of training that is causing the failure? Submission can easily set up a feeling of need and dependency on the Dom/me. The sub is often rewarded with praise and punishment, and the new sub will long to perform well in order to get that praise and avoid the punishment. Good Dom/mes want happy and proud subs. There is a difference between ‘beating’ and ‘browbeating’ just as there is a difference between being Dominant and domineering as we discussed in episode #3 "Rules to Love By & The Dom's RoleAnother warning sign in training is the lack of limits or safe words. I know there are experienced Dom/mes who say they don’t use either; however, I strongly believe both are necessary for the safety of a new sub. My first thought when someone says no limits is what about things like breath play, CNC, and primal play. Not to mention knife play, blood play, marking, scars and piercings? If there are no safe word how is your Dom/me going to know if there is some physical or mental effect that you are having trouble dealing with? There are some very experienced and observant Dom/mes out there, and the safe word may rarely or never be used but most of the time when that’s the case it’s also with an experienced sub that probably has logged a lot of playtime with that Dom/me...and besides all that, why would a Dom/me feel threatened by having a safe word in place? Is it Abuse or is it BDSM?A predator can use the feeling of need and dependency to create an unhealthy environment, rather than participation in an exciting power exchange. Signs of an abuser in the vanilla world are denial, isolation, dependency, anger, control, and emotional impact. How does this relate to the BDSM world? Let’s look at them one by one, and compare with the vanilla world.DenialIn the BDSM world the Dom may punish you for serious offenses. I have only had to severely punish a sub a few times in the past 21 years. If I was not allowed to punish them in a way that had been pre negotiated, the alternative would be to end the relationship, due to the nature of the conflict. They chose to accept the punishment. Often a Dom will discipline the sub, giving a clear explanation of the ‘offense’, and the discipline, e.g. standing in the corner because you talked back to your Dom. The discipline will fit the seriousness of the offense. This can be an enjoyable part of the power exchange, and ‘brat subs’ in particular will do things to make the Dom discipline them. A perfect example...if you’ve ever seen the movie secretary in the last scene she put a bug on the bed. Discipline can also be a useful training tool. Predators however will convince you that you deserve punishment for a wide variety of real and imagined offenses. They do not use appropriate levels of discipline, so the punishment does not fit the indiscretion. It is never part of a consensual power exchange, and offenses are not forgiven after the discipline. There is a constant reminder of your ‘failure’. True Doms learn to leave the past in the past.IsolationA vanilla abuser will isolate a girlfriend from her friends and family. The caring Dom/me may limit certain contacts in order to protect the sub, but will encourage healthy relationships inside and outside of the community...and not just with his chosen people. Don’t forget, you entered into your relationship friends and in part of a healthy relationship is spending time apart from each other with those friends. Otherwise, codependency will lead to isolation, a form of abuse in and of itself, but it typically doesn’t stop there. DependencyIf an abuser can control the person, he can control their feelings and keep them. A Dom is all about control, but again, the power exchange is the key. A sub consents to this control, and can withdraw consent at any time. Submissives derive great satisfaction from being owned and under control...it’s kinda what makes them submissives. However they should still have independent thoughts and actions. This makes life for both of parties more exciting as willing submission is the ultimate power exchange.AngerThe abuser reacts with anger instead of a range of emotions. The Dom/me will always keep calm and under control, especially when dispensing discipline or punishment. This is key for the safety of his or her submissive toy. As I have said in the past, I have ended a scene more times than my subs have combined because I wasn’t fully in the correct head head space. Whether it was anger with them, someone else, or just a general distraction. Anger has no place in administering punishment and should not be used to control anyone no matter the nature of the relationship.ControlWith the abuser it is his/her way or the highway. A proper Dom/me will negotiate roles in advance, and when a bump is encountered, renegotiation is encouraged. If this does not work out, then both sub or Dom/me have the choice to move on to another relationship, with no hard feelings on either side.Emotional ImpactYou can get used to being treated poorly, and begin to think it is normal. The predator Dom/me will approach slavery and submission as a lowly thing. Regarding most submissives or slaves a Dom/me might say ‘she’s just a slave’, but that sub or slave is usually highly valued. Humiliation play can be fun, but constant humiliation is abusive. If your instinct is that you are performing a valuable service, but your Dom/me has any of the characteristics we’ve discussed in this 3 part series, follow your instincts and find another Dom/me.There are wolves in this community. Some of these wolves are quite open about the fact, and proud of it (which gives you an interesting option if you have Red Riding Hood fantasies). Others are predators hiding behind fancy names and secrecy. The author of this submissiveguide.com article quoted her Master: “they refuse to come out into the light of munches and parties, and they pull newbies out to the fringes like separating lambs from the flock”. Unfortunately, I have to agree with him. The world of BDSM is about playing with the dark side of emotions, pain, and pleasure, or about serving in ways that are often unacceptable in the vanilla world. Subs need to be aware of warning signs to protect themselves, just as they do with dating in the vanilla world. In this case a little knowledge is not a dangerous thing; it can help you reap the rewards of the lifestyle of your choice.NEXT WEEK’S AGENDANext week’s agenda we are going to do a complete 180 from this topic and discuss the importance of humor BDSM.
