Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Aryan Simhadri joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss playing Grover, positive moments on set with the cast and more. Aryan Simhadri is a performer with credits spanning stage and screen. A California native, the talent has been seen in films like Netflix and WWE's The Main Event and television series such as NBC's Will & Grace. The big mouse loves Aryan - huh huh! He's been a part of many Disney projects over the years. Recently including, the Disney+ reboot of “Cheaper By The Dozen” alongside Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union, and Spin, the first Disney Channel Original Movie to feature a Southeast Asian-Indian lead cast.  Aryan also starred in a filmed version of the off-Broadway production of Trevor: The Musical, which was later released on Disney+. He got to flex his improv skills when he was cast on Disney's “Just Roll With It” and has carved out a vibrant voiceover career, with credits like Disney's Mira, The Royal Detective. While we're on the Disney monorail here, we should probably park to talk about Aryan's biggest role to date: He plays the ‘Grover' in the Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” based on the popular “Percy Jackson” novels by Rick Riordan, which I used to devour growing up. Grover is considered the empathetic “heart of the series,” making him a wonderful character to break down on the AOK. What do you do when who you want to be and who the world tells you to be are different? In a world of stereotypes and expectations, how do we figure out who we really are? Actor Kal Penn and the Surgeon General go deep on these questions as they compare notes on growing up as children of immigrants and discuss Penn's experiences with discrimination, bullying, self-doubt, and societal pressure while launching his career. If you have ever wondered how to navigate being different, or wanting something other than what's expected of you, tune in – Kal Penn has been there! Kal Penn, Actor &Author Twitter: @kalpenn Instagram: @kalpenn Facebook: @kalpenn About Kal Penn Kal Penn is an actor, writer, producer, and author. He is known for his starring roles in the “Harold & Kumar” series, “Designated Survivor,” “House,” and the patriotic immigration sit-com “Sunnyside,” which he co-created for NBC. Kal published his best-selling memoir “You Can't Be Serious” in 2022. In it, he recounts a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn's idiosyncratic life. His story reaches back to his grandparents who marched with Gandhi and growing up the son of immigrant parents, who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son appearing in the Ryan Reynolds movie “Van Wilder”…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country's first Black president. In addition to acting, Kal has been engaged in the public sector. He served as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he served as President Obama's Liaison to Young Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the Arts community. In these roles, he worked on a range of issues, including the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the Affordable Care Act, Pell Grants, arts and culture programs, the DREAM Act, and rapid response to the BP Oil Spill and earthquake in Haiti. In 2012, he was a national co-chair for the Obama/Biden re-election campaign and served on the President's Committee for the Arts and Humanities. Originally from New Jersey, he received his undergraduate degree in sociology, theater, film, and television at the University of California, Los Angeles, and received a graduate certificate in international security from Stanford University. He has been a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations. Penn has taught courses at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Los Angeles. Kal Penn, actor, author, and former White House staffer during the Obama Administration, joins Jerry to talk about a whole host of topics, including the paperback release of his book You Can't Be Serious. Kal shares about his family's story of becoming Asian American, battling imposter syndrome as an actor, and going from Hollywood to D.C. to work in the Obama Administration. Listen in as Jerry and Kal discuss who Kal's book is for, the unexpected impact of Harold & Kumar, and what keeps him hopeful right now.Meet KalKal Penn has played leading roles in some of the world's most-watched television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, 24, Designated Survivor, House, and more. He currently stars on the Disney Junior animated series Mira, Royal Detective. He was also the cocreator and star of the NBC/Universal comedy Sunnyside, and host, cocreator, and executive producer of a six-episode series in October 2020 for Disney's Freeform Channel called Kal Penn Approves This Message, aimed at entertaining and informing young voters. On the big screen, Kal has starred in movies that have collectively grossed more than a billion dollars, including the Harold and Kumar franchise, National Lampoon's Van Wilder, Superman Returns, The Namesake, and many other critically acclaimed blockbuster titles. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer in sociology and film studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and in sociology and political science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kal has worked at the very highest levels of politics, as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he was President Obama's Liaison to Young Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the Arts communities in America. He was born and raised in New Jersey.About You Can't Be Serious! The star of the Harold and Kumar franchise, House, and Designated Survivor recounts why he rejected the advice of his aunties and guidance counselors and, instead of becoming a doctor or “something practical,” embarked on a surprising journey that has included confronting racism in Hollywood, meeting his future husband, and working in the Obama administration, in this “incredibly joyful and insightful” (Kiefer Sutherland) memoir. You Can't Be Serious is a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn's idiosyncratic life. It's about being the grandson of Gandhian freedom fighters, and the son of immigrant parents: people who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in the raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie Van Wilder…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country's first Black president.“By turns hilarious, poignant, and inspiring” (David Axelrod, New York Times bestselling author), Kal reflects on the most exasperating and rewarding moments from his journey so far. He pulls back the curtain on the nuances of opportunity and racism in the entertainment industry and recounts how he built allies, found encouragement, and dealt with early reminders that he might never fit in. He describes his initially unpromising first date with his now-fiancé Josh, involving an 18-pack of Coors Light and an afternoon of watching NASCAR. And of course, he reveals how, after a decade and a half of fighting for and enjoying successes in Hollywood, he made the terrifying but rewarding decision to take a sabbatical from a fulfilling acting career for an opportunity to serve his country as an Obama White House aide.Above all, You Can't Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story. The book “is insightful, funny, and instructive for anyone who's ever grappled with how they fit into the American dream” (Ronan Farrow, New York Times bestselling author), and demonstrates that no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. And okay, yes, it's also about how Kal accidentally (and very stupidly) accepted an invitation to take the entire White House Office of Public Engagement to a strip club—because, let's be honest, that's the kind of stuff you really want to hear about.IG @kalpenn Twitter @kalpennFB - https://www.facebook.com/kalpenn// Support Dear Asian Americans:Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/dearasianamericans/Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jerrywonLearn more about DAA Creator and Host Jerry Won:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerrywon/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jerryjwon/// Listen to Dear Asian Americans on all major platforms:Transistor.fm: http://www.dearasianamericans.comApple: https://apple.dearasianamericans.comSpotify: https://spotify.dearasianamericans.comStitcher: https://stitcher.dearasianamericans.comGoogle: https://google.dearasianamericans.com  Follow us on Instagram:  http://www.instagram.com/dearasianamericans Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/dearasianamericans Subscribe to our YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/dearasianamericans // Join the Asian Podcast Network:Web: https://asianpodcastnetwork.com/Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/asianpodcastnetwork/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/asianpodcastnetwork/Dear Asian Americans is produced by Just Like Media:Web: http://www.justlikemedia.comInstagram.com: http://www.instagram.com/justlikemedia

The Kathak Podcast : Kathak Ka Chakkar

Episode Notes Smita Rawal Alves – Smita has been dancing for over 30 years, having toured across the US and Canada, with her primary training and Guru Smt. Anjani Ambegaokar. In recent years she continues to learn kathak under Vidushi Smt. Durga Arya ji and extensive taal vidya studies under Pandit Divyang Vakil ji. As much as she loves to dance and tour, after about a 5-6 year hiatus to raise her own children, Smita's current aspiration is to share the beautiful tradition with others to emphasize the value and relevance of Indian Classical arts in society today. Since 2015, Smita runs her own Kathak school: Bhakti Bhav Dance, teaching classes to all ages of students across Orange County, CA. Kathak is the schools' platform to nurture and encourage students to appreciate musicality, movement, rhythms, self-expression, discipline, and the richness of the cultural history which Kathak stems from. Nardeep Khurmi is an acclaimed writer, director, and actor hailing from the suburbs of Philly by way of Switzerland and England. You can usually catch him on some mountain likely out of breath. Or pigging out on some delicious street food. He studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, FAMU International in Prague, Czech Republic, Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), and recently completed a 5 year training with teacher Stephen Book.  His work spotlights underrepresented communities, and he splits his time working on thought-provoking, moving, socially relevant narratives and absurdist comedy pieces. He is currently developing a feature film about a trans-American road trip exploring a surrogate father-daughter relationship against the backdrop of America's current border and immigration crisis. Nardeep is also an accomplished actor. His recent credits include 911, SWAT, The Odd Couple, and recurring roles on Jane the Virgin and The Bold and the Beautiful. He is currently recurring on Legendary Entertainment and the Nerdist's show Orbital Redux, a revolutionary Sci-Fi show filmed and aired live, and is a heavy recurring on the Disney animated show Mira, Royal Detective, where he voices more than 10 characters. On this episode you will hear about: Nardeep talks about his film, Land of Gold (how the idea came to him, and why he chose this subject). How going on instinct sometimes helps you to be faster and more efficient. Why journaling is a critical tool for the creative process. The reasons you should create a project "bible" when you are creating anything (products, services, marketing campaigns, films, etc.). Why pen and paper is still the best medium, and why you should just keep scribbling your ideas down until you feel "ready." How to get feedback from your trusted advisors. Nardeep will give you the secret sauce for boosting your own creative energy and using your imagination.b Why you should never delete anything (when you're being creative). How improv can help you to be more creative and stay in the present moment. Why ultimately you need to just put your shit out there (perfection is the enemy of done). Nardeep and I get pretty deep, giving you some philosophy and motivation to get your projects going. Production Credits: The Self Made Strategies Podcast is a SoftStix Productions LLC jawn. Welcome to a new episode of The Couch. Today I'm here with my friends Lucretia Berry and Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young.  Lucretia is the creator of Brownicity.com, a learning community that celebrates many hues and one humanity. She's a wife, mom of three, and a former college professor, and her passion for racial healing led her to becoming an author and speaker. And long-time listeners know Dorina, friend of the show. She's a multicultural speaker, author, Bible teacher, foodie, podcaster, and trail runner. She helps people chase God's glory down unexpected trails and flourish in their God-given callings. Dorina and her husband Shawn are raising three brave girls in Central California. Both of these ladies are also (in)courage contributors, which is how we first became friends.  We had so much fun chatting, and I think you'll get a lot out of our conversation, too. In this episode, we're talking about how to teach your kids about other races and cultures through media. We've got tons of book recommendations for you, plus TV shows and movies to watch with your family, as well as details about a cool new program Lucretia and Dorina have just launched. And because this is The Couch, where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome, we also get into Scholastic book orders, the next show you'll want to binge on Netflix, and charcuterie boards. In this episode, we're talking about how food is used to help people gather and connect, both in real life and in pop culture. In Screen Time in the News, we wonder whether Netflix’s new Play Something feature represents a welcome return to the old days. We fawn over Mira’s stellar voice cast, puzzle briefly over anachronistic seat belts and lifejackets, and digress to emphasize that goats’ creepy eyes make them poor pets.
