Director Ryan White (GOOD NIGHT OPPY, THE KEEPERS, ASSASSINS) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast to discuss his career and the field of documentary filmmaking. Born and raised in Dunwoody, Georgia, Ryan later enrolled in Duke University where he found his calling to direct documentaries after watching Agnès Varda's THE GLEANERS AND I. After welcoming him on the podcast, Ryan starts off strong by revealing how he's used previous episodes to study a particular department to help secure a job. He reflects on the state of the industry in which he came up that forced him to begin directing in his mid-20s and laments how today's industry can delay a young filmmaker from taking their first steps towards starting a career by employing them to assist those already established. We later learn how Ryan prefers to shoot his documentaries as intimately as possible over several years and how he and his producing partner Jessica Hargrave have typically sold their projects to distributors. Throughout our discussion, we reaffirm the value of learning by doing, of believing in your stories and talents when leaving the nest, and of listening to your mother. - This episode is sponsored by Dallas Film Commission Instagram: @dallasfilmcommission - Recommended Viewing: THE KEEPERS, GOOD NIGHT OPPY

Moviegoers who might never pick up a book on the history of science may nonetheless find themselves confronted with the stories, themes, and questions to which historians of science devote their careers when they go to the movies. Films and other forms of popular culture both reflect and shape public discourse about the significance of scientific discoveries and the legacies of technological achievements. For this episode, we've convened a film forum. HSS Secretary Matt Shindell hosts a discussion of four recent movies with fellow historians Yangyang Cheng, David Hecht, and Amit Prasad. Each of the films take on history of science subject matter in different ways; they include Christopher Nolan's newly released biopic, Oppenheimer, Sudhir Mishra and Sachin Krishn's satire, Serious Men, Ryan White's documentary, Good Night Oppy, and Jianya Zhang's heroic depiction of Qian Xuesen. Recorded on July 27, 2023. For information this topic, and other HSS@100 episodes, please see https://www.chstm.org/video/157.
Filmmaker Ryan White (“Good Night Oppy”, “The Keepers”) had no desire to make a documentary about ‘90s superstar Pamela Anderson. Not when the idea was first brought to him, anyway. But then, Pamela's son urged him to at least meet his mother on Zoom. And that was all it took. Ryan quickly realized that the media image of Pamela as a two-dimensional blonde bombshell and attention-driven celebrity was not at all an accurate picture of the complex, intelligent, and funny person he would get to know while filming what became Ryan's highly engaging new documentary “Pamela, a love story”. Making a return visit to Top Docs, Ryan describes how vastly different his experience was making “Pamela” from his last film “Good Night Oppy”. What was it like for Ryan to have Pamela turn over her entire personal archive of diaries and videotapes and empower him to decide how to use them? How did Pamela's spontaneous nature create the kind of atmosphere on set where anything could happen? And how did Ryan navigate the difficult waters of the Pamela and Tommy Lee sex tapes, which he knew had to be addressed, but which would likely bring up painful memories for Pamela? “Pamela” is a totally refreshing portrait that explores the many sides of love. Thank goodness for that Zoom call. “Pamela, a love story” is currently streaming on Netflix. Filmmaker Ryan White has made a dizzying array of unique documentaries, including “The Keepers,” about the unsolved murder of a Catholic nun, “The Case Against 8” about the fight for marriage equality, “Good Night Oppy,” which traces the journey of NASA's Mars Rover and “Assassins,” about the murder of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother. The Emmy-nominated director's latest project, “Pamela, A Love Story,” is a raw look at the life of 90's bombshell Pamela Anderson. It showcases a more vulnerable side of the actress and re-examines the major life events of the star – from her rise to fame to the infamous, stolen sex tape with her then-husband, Tommy Lee. Alec speaks with Ryan White about what he learned filming with Anderson, the impact the documentary had on her life and how he balances the light and the dark of his projects.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this Presidents' Day, Press Play rebroadcasts some of our favorite interviews. Stand-up comedian Atsuko Okatsuka went viral on TikTok for doing the drop challenge with her grandmother, and afterward, she took her comedy to HBO. The film “Good Night Oppy” tells the story of Opportunity, a NASA rover that exceeded expectations, and explored and analyzed the planet's surface for nearly 15 years. Musician Allison Russell wants to heal the world — and herself — in her latest album “Outside Child,” which reflects on a decade of childhood abuse.
Today's episode is special because I had the opportunity to collaborate with Wonder Workshop, the robotics company, and EdWeb to interview Bekah Sosland Siegfriedt, a current flight director at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was one of the featured team members in Amazon Prime's GOOD NIGHT OPPY and got to work with space rovers Spirit and Opportunity. This episode was a live webinar; the video replay is available and linked in the show notes. At the end of the conversation with Bekah, the moderator for this webinar, Bryan Miller, the Senior Director of Global Strategic Outreach at Wonder Workshop and was a guest on the show last year, asks Bekah some great questions to close out the webinar. I learned so much in this interview. I am so grateful for this opportunity and so excited to be able to share this with you today. I know you're definitely going to enjoy it. GOOD NIGHT OPPY is a documentary about two computerized Mars rovers that NASA launched in 2003. If this NASA mission had merely fulfilled its goal of 90 days of data collection from the Red Planet, the mission would have been a resounding success. However, Spirit ran for almost six years, and Opportunity lasted an astounding 15 years, outlasting many of the humans who oversaw the mission at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Director Ryan White and Academy Award-winning sound designer Mark Mangini join us today to discuss the making of “Good Night Oppy.” This charming new documentary tells the story of the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, which were sent to the red planet back in 2003 and were expected to survive long enough to collect data for — hopefully — 90 days. Instead, they blew everyone's expectations away and one of them, nicknamed “Oppy,” lasted over 15 years. The filmmakers had the advantage of almost a thousand hours of archival material from NASA, but since much of the film takes place “on Mars,” that came with its own unique challenges.“I didn't want it just to be an earthbound story. I wanted it to also take place on Mars. And I didn't want that just to be like grainy black and white photos. And so I asked [our production company] Amblin, ‘is it possible to put the audience on Mars, almost as if I could be there with my documentary crew during this adventure, in a way that is photoreal?' And Amblin said, ‘we don't know, but luckily our best friends are Industrial Light and Magic.” … Spirit and opportunity each had nine cameras. We know what every day of their journeys looked like. And so we were able to supply all of that photography and all of the data that NASA could give us. So for instance, the weather, where the sun rose and sun set on a day, or how much dust was in the air on a certain day that Spirit was going through. And we asked Industrial Light and Magic, ‘can you take all of this information, all of this data, and create a photoreal Mars?' And they said, ‘we've never done that before, but we love a challenge. We will build Mars from the ground up for you.'”— Ryan White, Director, “Good Night Oppy”Mark Mangini, who worked as the film's sound designer, supervising sound editor, and re-recording mixer, then had the unique challenge of “recreating” what exactly those machines and environment might have sounded like on Mars… but without the benefit of microphones on any of the rovers. But as always, he was able to craft an incredible soundtrack and mix in Dolby Atmos®.Be sure to check out “Good Night Oppy,” now streaming on Prime Video in Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. "Good Night Oppy" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews. It has been charming audiences ever since with its awe-inspiring story of discovery, wonder, and collaboration in the face of overwhelming statistical odds to achieve something extraordinary. The documentary recently garnered five wins from the Critics Choice Documentary Awards and will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on November 23rd. Director Ryan White was kind enough to spend some time talking about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you. All you need to know about Ryan White's (“The Keepers”, “The Case Against 8”) enthusiasm for taking on the project that would eventually become his awe-inspiring new documentary “Good Night Oppy” is that the Cabbage Patch doll he had as a kid was the astronaut version (currently selling on Etsy for up to $200). Couple this opportunity to revisit his childhood passion for space with the fact that the company behind the project is Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment — makers of Ryan's favorite movie of all-time, “E.T.” — and what you've got is the perfect creative marriage of filmmaker and subject. Ryan joined Mike and Ken to explore the constellation of joyful moments and creative challenges that propelled “Good Night Oppy” on its journey from launch to successful landing. After the experience of spending 90 minutes inside a photoreal environment of Mars, what scene turned everything on its head and became Ryan's favorite of the movie? What's the inherent tension that exists between NASA scientists and engineers, and how did they manage to gel so well on this mission? How does the film bring to life the story of an adorable robot while remaining, at its core, a film about people and their attempt to do something for the betterment of humankind? And, as Oppy reaches the end of his miraculous mission, why did a song of Billie Holiday's take on a starring role? Join us for an out-of-this-world conversation with Ryan White. Cabbage Patch doll not included. Hidden Gem: “Bad Axe” Follow on Twitter: @ryanwhiteIV @topdocspod “Good Night Oppy” premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 23.
The documentary, “Good Night Oppy,” narrated by Angela Bassett, recreates the journey of the Opportunity rover, which explored Mars sending signals and findings back to Earth from 2004 to 2018. Director Ryan White joins us alongside Bekah Sosland Siegfriedt, engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The documentary arrives on Amazon Prime this Wednesday.
Good Night Oppy tells the inspirational true story of Opportunity, a rover that was sent to Mars for a 90-day mission but ended up surviving for 15 years. The film follows Opportunity's groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between a robot and her humans millions of miles away. We had the "opportunity" ;) to talk to producer Jessica Hargarve about her movie for our podcast: Das FilmSprechzimmer. This week, we look at Alec Baldwin's latest attempt to clear his name from the on-set tragedy that took a cinematographer's life over 1 year ago, why the long-planned female-led “Pirates of the Caribbean” reboot is dead in the water, the rumours surrounding Jason Momoa's teased turn as DC's Lobo, news on “Stranger Things” fifth and final season, and the many tributes that have poured in for late Batman voice icon, Kevin Conroy. Science Was Big On The Ballot This Week. Here's What Went Down Another chaotic election week has come and gone. Across the U.S., science was on the ballot, and people cast their votes on issues like healthcare, climate change infrastructure, conservation, and abortion policy. Nsikan Akpan, health and science editor at WNYC in New York City, joins Ira to talk about how the science ballot initiatives panned out this week. They discuss the outcomes of the abortion initiatives, California's move to ban flavored tobacco, and what this election could mean for the future of the U.S.' climate goals. Plus, they discuss the mess that is COP 27 climate conference, why this hurricane season is so strange, how an in utero procedure successfully treated a rare genetic disorder, and new footage of octopuses hurling objects at each other. As Anthony Fauci Steps Down, A Look Back At His Storied Career In recent years, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, has become a prominent public figure and one of the public faces of the U.S. government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Science Friday has been talking to Dr. Fauci for decades, beginning in 1994, about topics ranging from HIV/AIDS to Ebola, interviewing him about everything from the Zika virus to advances in allergy research. Fauci has been in his current role at NIAID for 38 years, and has served as an advisor to seven presidents. He is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He spoke with Ira about his career in medical research, the things he's most proud of achieving in his time with the NIH, and the challenges the nation still faces in dealing with the pandemic, and other disease outbreaks yet to come. New Documentary Is Endearing Tribute To NASA's Rover Program In 2003, the world became captivated by two rovers launched by NASA on a mission to Mars, known as Spirit and Opportunity. The rovers were sent to the Red Planet to discover what was on the surface. The rovers were only expected to last 90 days. Instead, Opportunity led a 15-year life of discovery, including the bombshell that Mars may once have been suitable to sustain microbial life. The story of these twin rovers is the subject of a new documentary out this month: “Good Night Oppy,” evoking the nickname of the Opportunity rover. The film features footage taken over nearly two decades, from the building of the rovers to recent interviews with scientists involved in the mission. Ira speaks with “Good Night Oppy” director Ryan White, as well as featured scientist Doug Ellison, engineering camera payload uplink lead at NASA, based in Alhambra, California. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
The weekly movie reviews hit the dozen mark again with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy. They remind you of this year's Sundance entry from indie sci-fi masters Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Something In The Dirt). Eva Green is either going nuts or has a very bad nanny (Nocebo) and Andrea Riseborough stars in a film that may get itself compared to Rocky Horror (Please Baby Please). The pair wade through a couple of thrillers that reset themselves including a noir wannabe (The Minute You Wake Up Dead) and Mel Gibson in a Phone Booth situation in a radio station (On The Line). Steve has words for James Gray's new film (Armageddon Time) and the duo have lovely words for a documentary about the Mars Rover mission (Good Night Oppy). Funny women headline a pair of comedies including Toni Collette & Anna Faris in a Greedy-esque tale of will hunting (The Estate) and Jillian Bell & Natalie Morales star in a tale about friendship, regret and aliens (I'm Totally Fine). Millie Bobbie Brown returns as the sister of the famous detective (Enola Holmes 2) and Jennifer Lawrence stars with Brian Tyree Henry in a tale of trauma and friendship (Causeway). Finally, the internet finally got the biopic they wanted with Daniel Radcliffe starring as the world's renown song parodist (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story). 0:00 - Intro 1:18 - Something In The Dirt 11:05 - Nocebo 18:39 - Please Baby Please 26:13 - On The Line 35:53 - The Minute You Wake Up Dead 49:51 - The Estate 59:52 - Armageddon Time 1:09:07 - I'm Totally Fine 1:22:17 - Enola Holmes 2 1:32:50 - Good Night Oppy 1:48:15 - Causeway 1:57:09 - Weird: The Al Yankovic Story 2:10:34 - Outro

The rovers were built to last Mars' equivalent of 90 Earth days. Yet, 14 years later, after surviving dust storms and getting stuck and nearly running out of power, Opportunity was still exploring the planet as NASA's longest-running Mars rover. The new film ‘Good Night Oppy' not only pays tribute to the persistent rover, but also shows the almost parent-child relationship the scientists and engineers working on the project had with Opportunity. KPCC's John Horn, sat down with director Ryan White at the Telluride Film Festival, where ‘Good Night Oppy' premiered.

This week we're highlighting an interview Bruce Miller did with Ryan White, the director of Good Night Oppy. The film, which documents NASA's Mars rover Opportunity, is in theaters now and will land on Amazon Prime on November 23rd. It's an unexpectedly moving movie that Bruce has short-listed for his Oscar pool, and we thought we'd take the opportunity to hash out some of the other great documentaries this year, what it is that makes a great non-fiction film or series, and since Bruce also recently had a chat with the 'Documentary Now!' creators we give some shine to that consistently brilliant satirical deconstruction of the genre. The Mars rover Opportunity may look like any other robot, but as new documentary Good Night Oppy shows, the “lovable” creature was more than just a vessel to its NASA family and space enthusiasts around the world.
