Og så kom Of Monsters and Mainframes i 2025. Men mennesker? “It’s just a dumb AI, Isaac,” siger Agnus. Demeter reagerer prompte: “I am not lacking intelligence. You are using words marked as moderately offensive. This is antisocial behavior.” Børnene bliver stille. “I am Demeter. I am the ship. I am your friend. Report your injuries.” De begynder at lave lyde i lavt volumen. Demeters systemer kan ikke oversætte det. “How’s it going?” spørger Steward, den medicinske AI. “I wish I could lie,” svarer Demeter. “Humans are hard.” “You know what? Being an autopilot isn’t all that hard. I don’t know why Demeter seemed so stressed all the time. It’s day one of our journey, and we haven’t crashed yet.” “I don’t exactly speak exterior sensor. They seem very alarmed all the time, constantly screaming in a strange, disjointed dialect of JavaScript.” Stewards plan? “Embrace my managerial role and endeavor to do as little as possible. The subsystems will sort it out.” Anders: ⭐⭐⭐ (tre stjerner). Jens og Anders har SCIFI SNAKKET Of Monsters and Mainframes. Jens Har læst The Mercy of Gods af James S.A. Hun vil anbefale to vidunderlige novellesamlinger af Ursula K. LeGuin: The Birthday of the World og Changing Planes. Næste gang Anders vælger næste bog: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus fra 1818.
Discord: https://discord.gg/zPH6EeEgfXCanale Telegram: https://t.me/blablafantasPagina Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bla.blafantasy/

In this episode of The Biollywood Podcast, the Executive Director of the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense, Dr. Asha M. George, and Research Principal, J.T. O'Brien, discuss the novel Project Hail Mary (2021) by Andy Weir. Premise: Set in the near future, it centers on school-teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up from a coma afflicted with amnesia. He gradually remembers that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to find a means of reversing a solar dimming event that could cause the extinction of humanity. The story follows two storylines, each told chronologically, starting with the story on board the spacecraft Hail Mary where Ryland Grace regains his memory in bursts. This story is frequently intercut with flashbacks revealing earlier events leading up to the launch of the Hail Mary Learn more about the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense here. In today's episode, we read the science fiction novel, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. The book follows Ryland Grace, a teacher-turned-astronaut, who needs to save humanity before the sun dims too much and Earth freezes over. During this episode, we talk about the most wholesome friendship we've read so far, what we would do if we ever met an alien, and the most efficient way to get things done. How will Project Hail Mary compare to the last Andy Weir book we read, The Martian? Listen to hear our thoughts!
A lone astronaut. An impossible mission. An ally he never imagined.Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.Or does he?It was great fun this week to record with Mark Shapiro, host of the pheomenonally successful podcast Explore the Space https://www.explorethespaceshow.com/ which has a mission of "Examining the interface between healthcare & society, with thought leaders from across the spectrum."This was one of the first Sci-Fi genre novels I've ever picked up and I admit I was well out of my comfort zone with a lot of the theoretical physics (which Mark tells me I don't need to understand, just believe). Project Hail Mary is at its heart a book about connection and about the value of saving our planet, and humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about the amazing community of practice that is #MedTwitter, the joy of reading, accidental CPD, equity, climate change and so much more.Follow Mark on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ETSshow

As a fan of the genre, I was excited to dive into this action-packed and thought-provoking book that takes a critical look at some of the global issues we face today. I discuss the strengths and shortcomings of the book, as well as its potential pleasures and delights for science fiction enthusiasts. Join me as I explore the captivating story of Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone in a spacecraft and must use his knowledge and skills to save the earth from an alien threat. Don't forget to leave a comment with your thoughts on the book and whether you would recommend it to others.
¿O no?
What do you get when you mix an alien with jazz hands, too many scientific references, and a hint of cannibalism? A really tough read. Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, the sole survivor on a spaceship where he can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone…or does he? Our Sci-fi expert, Ella Kopeikin, joins me today to talk about this hot mess of a 400-page book we had to endure. In this episode we cover: Why we REALLY disliked this book (some would say hate) Why the necessity of an alien doing jazz hands was beyond us How this book has 4.5 stars on Goodreads…just, how?! A catastrophic particle is eating away the energy of our sun. Earth is on course for another Ice Age. According to the smartest scientists, humanity's existence is on the brink of extinction. However, there might be a small chance for a solution. 13 Light Years away, in another solar system, the solution for this problem has been found. Ryland Grace, a scientist and high school teacher, finds himself on the spaceship heading there. During his trip, he finds dead bodies, a solution to help earth and aliens. BUT.... he doesn't have a way to make it back home. A story filled with laughs, science, and a lot of drama, Andy Weir (author of The Martian) gives an account of the most realistic alien encounter yet. He paints the perfect image of the bleakness of humanity and how far we're willing to go to do the "right thing". Join us on this episode as we talk about all the intricacies that this book has to offer and the deep storyline that Weir has created for his readers.
What is Project Hail Mary? How does it relate to the Fermi Paradox and Drakes equation. Andy Weir built a two-decade career as a software engineer until the success of his first published novel, The Martian, allowed him to live out his dream of writing full-time. He is a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of such subjects as relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. Project Hail Mary is Andy Weir's newest book. In Project Hail Mary, a lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. Want to support the channel? Andy Weir got famous writing about a man stranded in an isolated environment who uses science and pluck to solve his way out of danger; in Project Hail Mary, he flexes his authorial talents to their limit with a novel about a man stranded in an isolated environment who uses science and pluck to solve his way out of danger. Join Brock, Summer, and Dan as we discuss Ryland Grace's portentous name, watching aliens poop, and how Weir blends hard and soft science fiction to tremendous effect.
¿O no? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
