The Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens came to this country as a small child and over the course of his career and life, reaching into the early years of the 20th century, became an artist that truly defined a look for America in sculpture.  His extraordinary natural talent grew into a master artist who was able to create lifelike depictions in marble and bronze that brought a realism never before seen in American sculpture. Saint-Gauden's style combines realistic imagery, allegory and architectural elements to create unique and very modern experiences for viewers. He's perhaps best known for his monumental casts of Civil War heroes from Admiral Daniel Farragut, General William Tecumseh Sherman and President Abraham Lincoln.Joining The Gilded Gentleman for this episode is Thayer Tolles, the Marica F. Natif de Saint Gaudens, Pierre grandit sur le plateau de Lannemezan. Avant même de savoir marcher, il a un ballon ovale dans les mains, suivant les traces de son papi et de son papa. Il débute alors au Cercle Amical Lannemezanais, et devient Champion de France Cadets en 1975. Après 1 année en équipe première au CAL, il s'engage au FC Lourdais où, repositionné du centre à la mêlée, il devient une référence mondiale à son poste. En 1985, Pierre signe dans le puissant SU Agen et remporte 3 ans plus tard le Bouclier de Brennus. Sélectionné pendant plus de 10 ans avec le XV de France, il obtient 56 capes au cours desquelles il remporte 6 Tournois de 5 Nations, dont 2 grand Chelem en 1981 et 1987. Il participe d'ailleurs à la finale de la 1ere Coupe du Monde la même année. En 1991, dès la fin de sa carrière de joueur, il devient sélectionneur du XV de France et obtient un bilan honorable, ponctué par la douloureuse demi-finale de Coupe du Monde 1995. Après une pause de quelques années, Pierre est parti entrainer Narbonne avant de prendre les rênes de la Squadra Azzurra en 2005, la faisant progresser jusqu'à la Coupe du Monde 2007. Suite à cela, il relève le défi du Racing Métro, le faisant passer en quelque saisons de la Pro D2 aux phases finales du Top 14. En 2017, il se rend au chevet d'un Aviron Bayonnais englué en 2eme division et grevé par des luttes intestines. Véritable passionné, Pierre a grandi avec le rugby. Il en a connu l'évolution, du rôle de joueur, en passant par le poste de sélectionneur, d'entraineur ou consultant dans les médias, de l'amateurisme le plus total au professionnalisme poussé à l'extrême. Aujourd'hui, il profite de la vie auprès des siens, et toujours très actif il n'hésite pas à enfourcher son vélo pour grimper les plus beaux cols Pyrénéens. J'ai passé un superbe moment en compagnie de Pierre et je suis honoré de vous partager le fruit de notre échange. El danés Jonas Vingegaard conservó el maillot amarillo tras resistir los ataques de Tadej Pogacar. El canadiense Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech) se adjudicó la 16ª etapa del Tour de Francia con llegada en Foix , al superar en solitario la línea de meta luego de haber estado metido en la escapada del día. En la pelea por la victoria de etapa, Houle superó por más de un minuto al francés Valentin Madouas, al canadiense Michael Woods y al estadounidense Matteo Jorgenson. Houle, de 31 años, firmó la primera victoria internacional de su carrera profesional, iniciada en 2013. Né en 1948 à Cier de Luchon, Michel grandit dans ce petit village du Luchonnais niché en plein cœur des Pyrénées ! Deuxième des trois enfants d'une famille pour le moins modeste, il est boursier et met un point d'honneur à réussir des études afin de devenir professeur de mathématiques. C'est alors que, happé par ses origines, il s'intéresse à la culture Occitane, en apprend la langue, et créé son groupe de musique en 1973. S'exprimant d'abord au travers de chansons très revendicatives, Nadau connait son premier gros succès en 1978 avec "De cap tà l'immortèla", qui est depuis devenu un véritable hymne. S'en suit alors une ascension régulière mais irrésistible. Ils font leur premier Zénith de Pau en 1993 et leur premier Olympia en 2000, réussissant le tour de force de faire résonner l'Occitanie à Paris, autrement que par le rugby ! D'ailleurs, au rugby, Michel y joue dans ses jeunes années au lycée de Saint Gaudens ! Mais c'est bien grâce à sa musique qu'il accompagne aujourd'hui les joueurs dans tous les stades de France, de la 4eme série au Top 14 ! Autant conteur, que musicien ou chanteur, il est depuis bientôt 50 ans un véritable semeur de mots. Fer de lance des luttes qui lui semblent justes, il est parvenu à rendre sa dignité à une langue bafouée et à un territoire loin des ors de la République. Aujourd'hui apaisé, Michel, ou plutôt Joan de Nadau, continue de partir à la rencontre de spectateurs toujours plus nombreux, pour leur chanter ce qu'ils sont. J'ai passé un moment incroyable en compagnie de Joan, dont les mots font souvent mouche mais qui sait aussi laisser parler le silence. Je suis extrêmement fier de vous partager notre échange. When he was ten, they settled on Staten Island. An uncle who became a Catholic priest paid for his tuition at what is now the Fordham Preparatory School. As a somewhat distracted student, he never completed his studies (who does?) but he was tutored in Italy and Germany and studied at Harvard. During the Civil War he was eventually promoted to Colonel and, following the Emancipation Proclamation, he led New England’s first all-black military unit, the 54th Regiment.  Shaw insisted on equal pay and opposed any form of discrimination. Two of his soldiers were sons of Frederick Douglas.    In 1863, storming Fort Wagner in South Carolina, Colonel Shaw led his regiment, which suffered heavy losses while he died from several wounds defending the nation and racial justice. Saint-Gaudens sculpted a bronze relief of Shaw and his troops, which was dedicated across from the Massachusetts State House 123 years ago on May 31. Just weeks ago, three million dollars were designated to restore it, but ironically on May 31, a mob claiming to be defenders of human dignity, defaced with obscenities this tribute to valiant African-Americans.    Rioters also gathered in our nation’s capital in Logan Circle, by another irony named for a Civil War general, John A. Logan, who said: “Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of a free and undivided republic.” But many in our latest generation have not merely forgotten that cost, they were never taught it in the first place.    The valor of the 54th Regiment was depicted in the 1989 film “Glory.” Yet recent mobs have behaved more like the brawlers in old Western movies, for whom one man attacking another becomes a cue for everyone to rise and wreck the whole saloon. Riots broke out in other cities and spread abroad. Perceived manipulation of the ignorant by sinister plotters whose Orwellian strategy is to call their fascism anti-fascist, is no excuse for their obliviousness to the consequences of moral confusion.    In 452, Pope Leo the Great saved Rome from Attila the Hun and, in a double whammy three years later, he confronted Genseric the Vandal. He faced both with the serenity of virtue and the bravery of charity, bending his knee before neither because he knelt only to God.     Pope Leo preached: “Christian, remember your dignity, and now that you share in God’s own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition. Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God’s kingdom.”

Léon Clergue, né à Lavaur (Tarn) le 23 décembre 1825 et mort le 8 février 1907, est un prêtre français. Il fit ses études au petit séminaire de l’Esquille. Ordonné prêtre en 1850, le 13 juin 1855 il entra dans l'ordre des Capucins sous le nom de frère Marie-Antoine. Le Père Marie-Antoine, qui en fait le récit lui-même, vint à Lourdes pour la première fois après une mission à Saint-Gaudens qui se situe fin juin-début juillet 1858. Il y rencontre Bernadette qui venait de faire sa première communion (3 juin 1858), en juillet, avant la dernière apparition du 16 février 18581. Elle assiste à sa messe et reçoit de ses mains la communion. Il fut un pionnier des pèlerinages de Lourdes. Lu par : Edition Rassemblement à Son Image

In Episode 48, we break new ground for The Meb Faber Show. Departing from our usual world of stocks and bonds, we welcome expert numismatist, Van Simmons. For anyone unfamiliar with the word, a “numismatist” is a rare coin collector. We start where we usually do – with a bit of background on our guest. Van gives us a quick overview on how he got into his line of work. But it’s not long before the guys jump into the world of rare coins, with Meb asking Van to provide a general, contextual overview. Van’s description of the world steers the conversation toward perhaps one of Van’s biggest contributions to the coin collecting community – the creation of an innovative coin grading standard. Meb believes this grading standard was huge, as “not getting screwed” is such a concern for all sorts of investors. Next, the guys cover a few, quick questions – how has coin space evolved over the years… what were the biggest seismic changes… and which demographic Van sees as the most active in this space. But they dig deeper when the conversation turns toward international demand – specifically from China. Van tells us how he bought two high-grade Chinese silver dollars in the late 90s. He found them in his safe two and a half years ago, and wondered what they were worth. He called an auction company and was told that he could have sold them at their last auction about four months earlier for $60-70K a coin (Van actually sold the coins some months later at a hefty price, though not quite this high). And what had Van paid for those coins? $600 for one and $900 for the other. Meb brings the conversation back to U.S. market, asking Van if there is a most famous or most traded coin – in essence, is there a “blue chip” coin? Van tells us one of them would be a 1907 twenty-dollar high relief (a $20 Saint Gaudens). He follows up with more color on the coin’s origin, dating back to President Roosevelt, as well as some interesting trivia on it relating to its high-relief profile. Other coins Van mentions are the 1804 Silver Dollar and the 1913 Liberty Nickel. Next, Meb asks how a new coin investor with a long time-horizon could get started with $10K. Meb reveals this is not an academic question – he actually intends to have Van build him a portfolio with a $10K seed. Meb’s criteria are: one, spread his money around as much as possible, say, up to 5-10 coins; two, he wants to tilt toward beautiful coins; and three, Meb wants coins that have some historical significance. Van gives us his thoughts. The guys jump around a bit before getting onto the topic of counterfeiters. Unfortunately, this can be a problem. Van tells us a story illustrating the danger before the guys discuss how to avoid getting ripped off. This leads into the topic of common mistakes that new coin collectors make. Van tells us that the biggest mistake is buying everything. The hardest thing to do is find someone you trust who will steer you toward great pieces that will hold value. Next, Van and Meb branch out, discussing other collectibles. There’s talk of pocket knives, Native American artifacts, baseball/basketball cards – even a great story involving Meb’s mom and a Michael Jordan rookie basketball card. Meb asks Van as technology improves, at what point does grading become software based, with optical recognition? Turns out, this technology has already been here – and Van was a big part of its creation. But the collecting community preferred human-graders. It’s a fascinating story you’ll want to hear. There’s lots more in this episode: a Mickey Mantle card worth $5M… Milton Friedman (one of Van’s clients) discussing the inevitable demise of the U.S. dollar… and of course, Van’s most memorable story related to collecting.
