But when the San Francisco-based chef (who has served Barack Obama and the Malaysian prime minister) invites Francis to come home with her after a decade away, he discovers the complex family dynamics that underpin her stories—and the ways that food can bind even the most complicated families. Laksa's (@laksauk) contribution to techno is as vital as it is hard to define. The London-based Bristolian never sits still in one stylistic niche and is as likely to ramp up the techno as he is slow then down. His meticulously designed grooves have come on tasteful labels like Hessle Audio, Timedance and Ilian Tape, always with a focus on dance floor dynamics. Further creative outlets come in the form of the re:lax label, club night and NTS show he runs with with re:ni. Most recently he has cooked up the WONDA EP which includes a vocal collaboration with Nyege Nyege-affiliated Phelimuncasi The podcast he serves up for us is, in his own words, "a mix of hype and hypnotism" and it includes some tasty unreleased music from the man himself as well as the likes of Ma Sha, Siu Mata, Erik Luebs and Crespi Drum Syndicate. The 90 minutes are as wide-ranging as you might expect with bass-heavy grooves, trance-inducing synths, broken techno workouts and tribal rhythmic explorations all making sure both head and body are catered for in style.

In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount my second visit to Singapore, a stark contrast to my first underwhelming trip in 2012. Invited by my friend Hama, I dive into the vibrant nightlife, savoring steamboat dinners, partying at Clarke Quay, and enjoying shots at Chupitos. The whirlwind tour continues with visits to Gardens by the Bay and local hawker centers, where I indulge in Singaporean delicacies like laksa and chicken rice, creating a tapestry of newfound appreciation for the city. Our adventure doesn't end there; we spontaneously decide to explore Bali and Nusa Penida. Despite a brief setback with a friend's illness, we relish the island's beauty, riding scooters and enjoying the serene villa life. My journey then takes a solo turn to Timor-Leste, where I navigate the unfamiliar terrain and cultural quirks, culminating in a memorable, if slightly perilous, motorbike ride back to Dili.

909 is a special number for us at RA—the name of one of the most hallowed drum machines in all of music, and one of the foundations of techno music—and we're more than happy to offer it up to a DJ who has been a long-time favourite of our team: Glasgow's Bake. In fact, we commissioned this mix roughly ten years ago, but you can't rush perfection. When Bake emerged as one of the heads heads behind the label All Caps—a relatively short-lived but influential imprint that released massive tracks like Flørist's "Marine Drive" and Kowton's "TFB"—he also quickly became one of the most impressive DJs in the post-dubstep access, appearing frequently at Hessle Audio events and sharpening his skills behind the decks at the country's best parties. Now he runs his own, Spirit, at Sub Club. He has a wide-ranging style that touches on all kinds of leftfield techno and broken drum patterns. His nearly two-hour RA Podcast finds him at the end of a sort-of comeback year after some time out of the public eye, and it touches on tracks from Shackleton, Laksa, Batu, Karima F and Levon Vincent, to give you an idea. It's the kind of mix that oozes expertise and practice without feeling showy—the signs of a truly great DJ. If you don't know Bake, then now you do. @bake-all-caps Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/909

Following a stellar Global Mix from Roy Mills, we're happy to present a premiere from his EP on his imprint Local Knowledge. ‘Aquatiqué' is a deep dive into bass heavy territories, as reverberated drums work in tandem with spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm yet powerful club tool. Roy is at the forefront of his imprint Local Knowledge. Born out of events, radio, and workshops in Naarm/Melbourne, Local Knowledge, helmed by Roy Mills, is focused on community and the dance-floor in equal measures. Crafting thematic bodies of work within its releases by combining gorgeous visual, aural, and tangible assets, previous releases have featured the likes of LOIF, Nice Girl, Purelink, and more since the first 10” by Hed Ardennes in 2020. Following a debut on Room II Records, SE London via Naarm/Melbourne artist Roy Mills has appeared on Yushh's Pressure Dome and Elkka's femme culture, with his tracks picking up support from esteemed selectors re:ni, Laksa, Simo Cell, Danielle, and Yak amongst others. Now, readying his second full solo release, Roy turns in a set of genre-spanning, sound design heavy cuts, channelling his thrilling take on dance music into three tracks custom-built for different times in the club. Roy's track ‘Aquatiqué' is a gentle, reverberated drum workout as percussion plays off spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm but no less club relevant closer to the EP. Thus the birth of Laksalicious, where she takes iconic street food, Assam Laksa and Nyonya Lemak Laksa and serves them in a comfortable restaurant setting. During the podcast, she shares her thoughts on Penang's hawker culture and how they use a 40-year-old Laksa recipe from housewives in Perak to share this street food goodness. “We are happy with just one outlet. In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Venessa Paech, Australia's leading online communities specialist and Founder and Chief Consultant at PeerSense. Venessa is a seasoned online community strategist, manager, researcher, and educator with over twenty years of experience building community online. She's also the Co-founder and Director of Australian Community Managers (ACM), a network organization for community building professionals in Australia. In this episode, Venessa and I dive deep into what community governance looks like and what your MVP governance program should look like. We also talk about AI and how these tools are helping us build, understand, and moderate our communities more efficiently. You're going to really enjoy some of the more advanced-level community focused topics that we have in this discussion. We ask a really interesting question of “Is there going to be a day soon where a community can be entirely built by robots with no human facilitation?” You'll find out what her answer is in this episode. Who is this episode for? Community managers and moderators who are also curious about the role of AI in community building and management. Three key takeaways: 1. Are tools enough to build a high-engagement community?: Without a solid social infrastructure, tools cannot engage the people in a community. Why are you better together as a community than apart? Asking such strategic questions will help discover the true value that your community brings. 2. Community governance isn't as boring as it sounds: Laws to prevent online harassment help hold community managers and creators accountable to protecting basic public decency online - just the way they would in person. Proactive governance includes rules, rewards, and recognition around behavior that demonstrates the character of your community. It also includes any reprimands against behavior that goes against your community's goals and values. Risk planning for community values will find its way into Community Operations over time. Planning for governance starts conversations that help examine the creator's vision for the community's culture and character. 3. AI-driven moderation: Governance automation should be more nuanced and include specific actions and behaviors, rather than being binary. Personalization can create “hand-rails” to help guide a member's journey, but looks very different from one community to another. Community strategists can use AI to find new patterns and discover new ways members discover relationships, but these tools need large data sets for accurate predictions. There's always a risk of bias coming from existing data sets into AI-driven moderation. AI-moderated communities can be used to advance both good and bad causes. Notable Quotes: 1. “Governance...It's really about how we make decisions that define who we are and where we assign value: Is that a valuable activity? Is that not a valuable activity? Where do we draw our lines? What is crossing the line?” 2. “..potentially using that data as a predictive tool to say, look, these are the trends, this is what's been happening in the last few years around content, around behavior, around topics that are discussed.. and therefore extrapolating, this is what might be happening in the future. It's not a hundred percent reliable of course, but when you've got big data sets, which machine learning loves, then you can do some really interesting things in terms of uncovering hidden gems.” 3. “If you label something as toxic, well, it's toxic perhaps to wider society. You know, our norms, our ethics might say, that's not cool. We don't like that. That's not acting. But within that community, it's not at all toxic, it's who we are, what we value, what we believe.” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. If you could only eat one kind of food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Noodles in any form, particularly Laksa - a Malaysian coconut curry noodle soup. 2. What's your favorite book to give as a gift to others? “Sand Talk” by Tyson Yunkaporta. 3. Wildest Community Story? X-Files Anonymous, her first true online community where she met and dated her now-husband. 4. A go-to community engagement tactic, or conversation starter? Sharing pictures of pets. 5. Have you ever worn socks with sandals? No, but she won't stop others from wearing them. 6. Who in the world of the community would you most like to take for lunch? Jane Jacobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and John Cote. 7. The weirdest community you've ever been a part of? All the FITA communities. 8. What's a community product or technology that you wish existed? To be able to have a conversation with your community as an avatar would be incredibly interesting. 9. What's a question I didn't ask you that I should have? Similarities between working in theater and working in community. 10. Twitter-sized piece of advice from her deathbed? Truly accepting yourself for who you are and having a relationship with an animal.
Tara O'Brady is the multitalented food journalist (Saveur, Jamie Oliver, Bon Appetit) and cookbook author (Seven Spoons) who lives in Ottawa, Canada with her husband and two children. In today's session, we talk all about differentiating herself from her parents' cooking, the dish that she would make to best represent her, what she wants for her kids food-wise (it involves Pop-Tarts), and mixing work and normal life. We also get into the systematic racism she encountered after publishing her first cookbook, how that's stopped her from writing the next one, and how things have changed enough to maybe make her reconsider. As that should come to no surprise given what an explosion of taste a bowl of Assam Laksa can offer, here we give the same appreciation to the various laksa(s) Malaysians enjoy. READ MORE HERE

Laksa no 2015. līdz 2019.gadam studēja Dienvidflorifdas universitātē, ieguva bakalaura grādu psiholoģijā.

As co-founder of the Diacritic Collective and resident for the As You Like It party series, Lily Ackerman is a household name in the Bay Area scene, a favorite among locals whose sets are as reliable as they are versatile. With only a couple of studio recordings from Lily out in the wild, we couldn't wait to dig into this mix the moment it landed in our inbox, and we suspect quite a few of you will feel the same. Recording entirely from vinyl, Lily has put together a colorful and energetic hour which treads diverse ground from the perennial favorite, Donato Dozzy, to more raucous offerings from the likes of Laksa and V111. Enjoy! More from Lily: @lilyackerman

I'm often surprised by certain things about a new place I've visited or discovered. Never more than on my recent trip to Kuching, Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo where I found the local people were especially friendly and welcoming. Random greetings while crossing the street, "hello, welcome! Where you from?" Sometimes a hello from a group of students walking home from school or just people you cross paths with in the air conditioned modern shopping mall. Island people I've found, for the most part, are generally laid-back, easy-going and friendly. I've met and have had amazing hospitality on my most recent trip to Sabah on Borneo as well. And of course the people of Taiwan are known for being some of the friendliest people on the planet. I hope the Sarawak Tourism Bureau has a big party for their people because these are the kinds of things that most visitors will remember and tell their friends and others about when they're asked what their trip was like. No doubt you're going to have some pretty awesome memories if you visit Semenggoh, the orangu-tan sanctuary or spend a day or two in Bako National Park. Having Sarawak's famous Laksa, noodle soup for breakfast, gorging on some of the cheapest and best seafood in Southeast Asia at the UTC Top Spot Food Court will certainly be big takeaways from a visit to Kuching. I can guarantee you though that provided you didn't spend your whole time in your hotel or guesthouse room, it's the kind-hearted and friendly people of Kuching that will be one of your strongest impressions of a visit to Sarawak. In this episode of the podcast I'm experimenting with a different format including more travel advice and tips that's specific to the place featured. Of course I will continue to bring you the best experiences the area has to offer. In upcoming episodes watch out for my visit to the Semenggoh Orangu-tan Reserve, Bako National Park as well as other not to be missed sites around Kuching. I was really impressed with Kuching, the range of guesthouses and hotels, the exceptional food and overall value, Old Chinatown, India Street, and of course the wonderful boardwalk along the Sarawak River. There are amazing adventure activities that can be day trips while you maintain your base in Kuching. I'm thinking if you are coming from a Western country try to devote 5-7 days around the area which could include one or two nights in Bako National Park. If you're an Asian based traveller Kuching could be a great long weekend getaway. Many Asian cities have direct flights to Kuching and Air Asia has several everyday from Kuala Lumpur. I've started a Patreon account so for as little as $1/ month you can be a sponsor of Far East Adventure Travel and have access to exclusive content.
