Melanoma not only affects the individual diagnosed with this disease, but it also has a significant impact on their family and loved ones. In this heartfelt conversation, my guest, Dee Conway shares her story about her sister Rose and her diagnosis of melanoma that ended her life within just 6 months. The emotional toll of melanoma can be overwhelming. Today we discuss the importance of early detection, the dangers of tanning beds, and the need for more education about skin cancer. Dee's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting your skin and taking steps to prevent melanoma. The loss of her sister at the young age of 35, inspired her to become an advocate for sun safety and melanoma awareness. Dee's advocacy work through the Melanoma Research Foundation and in Washington DC for the state of Arizona shows her efforts have helped to educate others and to hopefully prevent them from experiencing these tragedies. If you are interested in getting involved in melanoma advocacy and support, there are many ways to do so. You can start by educating yourself about the disease and the importance of sun safety. You can also donate to organizations that support melanoma research or volunteer your time to help raise awareness and funds. Skin cancer affects more than 3 million people in the U.S. every year, with sun exposure being the most common factor. But don't worry, there's a simple and safe solution: Sunscreen. Hats, clothes and properly applied sunscreen are vital for protection. Even then, no defense is perfect. But if skin cancer is found early enough, it can often be easily treated. Left unchecked? Well, that's when the real trouble starts. Host: Jonathan Fialkow, M.D., Chief of Cardiology at Baptist Hospital and Chief Population Health Officer at Baptist Health. Caught early, skin cancer is highly treatable. This is why – as a dermatologist – I want you to understand how to monitor changes that might occur on your skin. Of course, prevention (AKA proper sunscreen and sun-protective clothing application) is better than cure. Despite our best efforts, however, prevention isn't 100% guaranteed. So, as part of my series for Skin Cancer Awareness month, let's dive into the visual clues we need to look out for (with the 3 most common types of skin cancer) and how to prevent precancerous growth from fully developing into skin cancer. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: When to go to your Dermatologist for a skin evaluation How skin cancer starts and progresses – AND how it can be treated Risk factors associated with skin cancer RESOURCES: Wanna know how to better protect your skin from skin cancer? Terry Tucker was diagnosed with rare form of melanoma that appeared on the bottom of the feet or the palms of the hand in early 2012. He was a high school basketball coach at that time. One day his callus broke open right below the bottom of his toe. So being a coach, he didn't think much, but after a few days, when it didn't heal, he went to his foot doctor. In the X-ray, a cyst was detected, which got removed, but pathology reports detected cancer. By that time, his cancer had metastasized to a lymph node in his groin. He was treated at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer centre. He had two surgeries to remove the tumour, and after he healed, he was put on a weekly injection of interferon to help keep the disease from returning. The interferon gave him flu-like symptoms. This misery went on for over 1,660 days. One thing that Terry learned during all the pain and suffering is that you have two choices. You can either succumb to the debilitating discomfort and misery or learn to embrace it and use it to make you a more robust and better human being. He chose the latter.
Tina Montague became the Founder of Cancer Care Company in 2007. She worked alongside her daughter Stacey, her senior carer. In December 2015, things took a tragic turn when Stacey was diagnosed with terminal melanoma. It was a stark reality to Tina and Stacey, as they were so well trained and informed in terminal illness that they both knew the only outcome. Tina continued to run Care Comfort Company throughout Stacey's short battle with the invisible killer ravaging her body. Tina supported her at home as long as she could. She fulfilled any dreams she could manage as Stacey's condition deteriorated. Including an entire white wedding within ten days and a honeymoon night a week later. She walked to the car to get there and was carried out by her new husband. Over the weeks, Tina, Tina's husband and Stacey's husband, took shifts beside this beautiful, wonderful, Kind daughter, wife and mother, aged just 28, with a newborn baby and toddler to leave without their mummy and watch her go it together helpless to stop this living nightmare when she took her final breath on 5th June 2016. Tina was devastated and lost in this new life without Stacey. Her new reality, which she had never envisaged and could barely face. Her baby, her child, her best friend, her everything gone from this world. Her website is www.cancer company.org . They support remotely or in person.
