This was the last campaign of the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars.The French military strategy against Austria called for a three-pronged invasion to surround Vienna, ideally capturing the city and forcing the Holy Roman Emperor to surrender and accept French Revolutionary territorial integrity. The French assembled the Army of Sambre and Meuse commanded by Jean-Baptiste Jourdan against the Austrian Army of the Lower Rhine in the north. The Army of the Rhine and Moselle, led by Jean Victor Marie Moreau, opposed the Austrian Army of the Upper Rhine in the south. A third army, the Army of Italy, commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte, approached Vienna through northern Italy.The early success of the Army of Italy initially forced the Coalition commander, Archduke Charles, to transfer 25,000 men commanded by Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser to northern Italy. This weakened the Coalition force along the 340-kilometre (211 mi) front stretching along the Rhine from Basel to the North Sea. Later, a feint by Jourdan's Army of Sambre and Meuse convinced Charles to shift troops to the north, allowing Moreau to cross the Rhine at the Battle of Kehl on 24 June and defeated the Archduke's Imperial contingents. Both French armies penetrated deep into eastern and southern Germany by late July, forcing the southern states of the Holy Roman Empire into punitive armistices. By August, the French armies had extended their fronts too thinly and rivalry among the French generals complicated cooperation between the two armies. Because the two French armies operated independently, Charles was able to leave Maximilian Anton Karl, Count Baillet de Latour with a weaker army in front of Moreau on the southernmost flank and move many reinforcements to the army of Wilhelm von Wartensleben in the north.At the Battle of Amberg on 24 August and the Battle of Würzburg on 3 September, Charles defeated Jourdan's northern army and compelled the French army to retreat, eventually to the west bank of the Rhine. With Jourdan neutralized and retreating into France, Charles left Franz von Werneck to watch the Army of Sambre and Meuse, making sure it did not try to recover a foothold on the east bank of the Rhine. After securing the Rhine crossings at Bruchsal and Kehl, Charles forced Moreau to retreat south. During the winter the Austrians reduced the French bridgeheads in the sieges of Kehl and the Hüningen, and forced Moreau's army back to France. Tom Werneck sieht das als schweren Fehler und Versäumnis. Denn Spiele wie „Mensch ärgere Dich nicht“, „Malefiz“ oder „Siedler von Catan“ gehörten zum deutschen Kulturgut. Vor knapp 30 Jahren hat er auf Grundlage seiner eigenen Spielesammlung mit Gleichgesinnten in Haar das Bayerische Spielearchiv gegründet. Mehr als 20 000 Schachteln türmen sich dort an drei verschiedenen Orten - und jährlich werden es mehr. Der Jurist und Industriemanager hat das Prädikat „Spiel des Jahres“ mitinitiiert. Im Podcast erzählt er, welche Kriterien für die Jury ausschlaggebend sind und wie sich die Auszeichnung auf die Arbeitsweise der Verlage ausgewirkt hat. Werneck kann auf ein bewegtes Leben zurückblicken, in dem Spielen einen wichtigen Stellwert hatte, aber nicht schon in der Kindheit. Und am Ende des Gesprächs verrät er, welche Spiele er besonders gerne mag.

Os alunos de Direito Constitucional hoje em dia acompanham muito mais as movimentações do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) do que os estudantes do passado faziam. E a leitura dos jornais e das decisões dos ministros trazem um desafio para o professor Diego Werneck na sua sala de aula no Insper. Como explicar que há limites para o STF? Como convencer os alunos de que no Supremo nem tudo é política?"Hoje os alunos partem do princípio de que o Supremo pode tudo. E eles partem desse princípio, você pode alegar, porque tem ideias erradas, mas acho que é porque também eles acompanham as notícias e a impressão que fica é de que não tem, de fato, limites jurídicos", diz Werneck.Para tentar superar essa questão, Werneck diz levar casos para discussão que tenham argumentos bons para os dois lados do debate e que não mapeiem perfeitamente as posições políticas, como por exemplo o da vaquejada, em que os ministros estão tentando definir o que é crueldade contra animais."O desafio é esse, é dizer para eles que, primeiro, o Direito deve importar, dizer que tem limites, não é simplesmente você ter a ideia do que você acha que deveria ser o melhor resultado e escrever umas coisas bonitas lá na decisão", afirma Werneck.O professor Diego Werneck é o terceiro entrevistado da série do JOTA sobre os desafios de ensinar Direito Constitucional no Brasil polarizado.A série explora com professores renomados como é o ensino e a formação dos futuros operadores do Direito, em um cenário onde a Constituição é não apenas um texto jurídico, mas também o campo de inúmeras disputas sociais.
