What does the phrase “aquatic corporate community” mean to you? A school of fish in business suits holding an underwater meeting around a table of coral? Well, for our guests on the latest episode of *The Resonance Test,* it's all about plunging into a strategic social responsibility program called “Let's Swim Together.” Antonio Silva, President of European Aquatics, and Kate Pretkel, EPAM's VP and Head of Sustainability Programs, have pooled their knowledge to answer questions from Balázs Magyar, Senior Director of Account Management at EPAM. Swimming is not just sports skill, says Silva, “It's a life skill.” He rightly points out that the pool is a place that can be used by everyone: babies, children, and adults. And, as Magyar notes, it promotes discipline, responsibility, social connections, and physical- and mental health. “Let's Swim Together,” is starting with a pilot program for EPAM Hungary but the program will expand to other companies, other countries. Silva adds that with this initiative, we can reach “the specific goals of a company” and “so-called environmental, social and governance goals.” This is good news for Pretkel, who speaks ESG fluently. She says that EPAM has a long tradition of helping employees “to make a good impact on the communities that we live and work in,” adding that “It's not *just* about people working for a specific company, but also their friends, their families, their kids and their communities.” The challenge, with all these groups, is getting people to take the first step toward the water. “We are looking at the whole employee experience,” says Pretkel. The trick is making it easier for our employees to join. To do so, they are incorporated into the “overall experience that we are creating for them.” She says it's all about “building these habits and also in some cases engaging the team so they can help each other to make this first step.” In short, Silva and Pretkel are excited about building what Antonio calls, yes, “the aquatic corporate community.” He concludes: “It's about reaching some social goals that [the participants] could not reach if they were not involved in such an activity.” Host: Macy Donaway Engineer: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

“There's still a lot of room in grocery stores for better products. So, there's a lot more that we could do.” -Nels Leader   As the world continues to grapple with the issue of climate change, businesses are under pressure to find ways to operate in a more sustainable way. One way to do this is by achieving a Net Zero status. Net Zero means a company offsets all of its carbon emissions.    Achieving Net Zero is a major commitment for businesses, but it is one that can have a big impact on combating climate change. As more businesses strive for net zero, we will move closer to a sustainable future. Moreover, achieving Net Zero is not only good for the environment and for the people, but it can also help businesses save money on energy costs and make them more attractive to customers and investors.   Bread Alone is one of the companies that has worked hard to achieve this status. Bread Alone is a family-owned, values-driven company that has been making fresh, organic bread since 1983. Besides their tasty, honest, and affordable products, this values-driven bakery is a passionate advocate for regenerative farming and other sustainability measures. They are also committed to supporting local farmers, protecting the environment, and promoting the health of their customers.    In this episode, Justine sits with Nels Leader, the CEO of Bread Alone to discuss how we can be faithful stewards of the earth. Listen in as Nels shares what we can learn from his parents, Dan and Sharon about building a resilient family business and how they were able to build their facilities and run their operations in a very sustainable way. Justine and Nels also talk about how we can find a more purpose-driven life, why we should not stop or slow down in making better products, and how big of a difference small changes can make.  Meet Nels:  Nels Leader is the CEO of Bread Alone, a family-owned bakery that supports sustainable business for people and for the planet. Their family moved to the Catskill Mountains in 1983 where they started their journey. Since then, Bread Alone has become the home of freshly-baked oven organic bread. Nels joined his parents Dan and Sharon in 2012 and helped them make the company's vision bigger.    Nels was also trained for AI Gore's Climate Reality Project and is the co-owner of several other businesses. For the past years, Nels has been lecturing on Bard College's Sustainability Programs. Today, we can find Nels in Woodstock NY with his wife, son, and their dog.      Website Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn   Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  YouTube Linkedin Episode Highlights: 01:17 The Genesis of Bread Alone 06:05 Building a Family Business 10:02 Searching for A More Purpose-Driven Life 13:04 How to Achieve Net Zero in Your Business 16:10 How to Start Operating in a More Sustainable Way   18:57 There's More Room For Better Products

Molly Laverty, Senior Manager of Environmental, Social and Governance at Del Monte Foods Inc., joins us to discuss the company's climate response goals, which include using 25% recycled plastics in packaging. Del Monte Foods is one of the largest food packaging companies in the U.S. and is working to become a sustainable provider of fruits and vegetables through investments in regenerative farming. We talk about the recently released Del Monte sustainability report and its plan for environmental progress, and how the food supply chain may change in coming years. Del Monte's CropTrak system, for example, could provide consumers end-to-end transparency to see into the source and distribution of their food. On the plastics front, only 4% of Del Monte's total packaging by weight remains plastic-based—the rest is made of paper, metal and glass. By 2030, Del Monte aims to make 100% of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable.Del Monte is also entering regenerative farming, introducing the use of cover crop to prevent erosion and restore nitrogen and other nutrients in the soil between food crops. The company is also working to breed non-GMO sees that are drought resistant and reduce the need for pesticides. The company banned use of pesticides on their partner farms when pollinators are present to improve biodiversity in the soil and farmland. Del Monte also made progress on other ESG issues, including diversity in the senior executive ranks, surpassing the 50% level for participation by women and people of color in 2021.
