Marcus and Corey try to understand how certain holiday movies are "classics," things you have done at work that could get your fired, and whether or not the tsunami was a thing.
OPENING ILLUSTRATION: What do you do to prepare for Christmas to come? Years ago we had a two-story house, our kids were young and they REALLY wanted Christmas lights on the house. Jenni gave me the whole, “It would just mean so much if you'd put them up”. So, I put the ladder on our back deck off the second story and started to climb up onto the roof. I got up there and looked about 25 ft from the roof to the ground and I did what any reasonable person would do. I sat there for about 20 minutes deliberating on if my life was worth putting lights up for the kids… Lol. I'm such a weenie, but I knew if I fell off that roof, it would be lights out for Kent. I finally came off the roof and said, “I've got a great idea!” Let's put the lights in the yard. We strung the lights all over the ground and when it would snow, it was the coolest thing to see the light coming up through the snow… WE: Most people have traditions for getting ready for Christmas, don't they? -In our family, we do all of our Christmas decorating after Thanksgiving -Some of you monsters out there do it after Halloween lol What's your tradition for getting ready for Christmas? All along the way in the first Christma,s there was someone who was getting things ready… Before Jesus was even born his mother Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was also pregnant and this happened: Luke 1:41-44 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Elizabeth's baby, John (the Baptist), was moved in the womb when Jesus came into his presence. This was what John the Baptist did, he got things ready for Jesus… Mark 1:1-4 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a]the Son of God,[b]2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”[c]— 3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with[e] water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.” John the Baptist was a wild guy. He seems to be fierce and fearless in his pursuit of God and His Kingdom. One of my favorite passages in scripture comes from Johnny B… Listen to what he says when his disciples come to him to tell him that Jesus is getting and gaining more disciples than John… John 3:29-30 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.” Somehow, John was content to play second fiddle. He was content to become less and let Jesus become more… Here's my question: What was it about John that allowed him to take a back seat? b I think it's because John knew the part he played in the story. When John was asked who he was, this is what he said about himself John 1:23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.'” John knew that his role was to make way for Jesus - so He could bring salvation to everyone. b John was knocking down barriers and opening doors for the message to get out. b He was, all along, the one who was getting us ready for Christmas - God coming into the world to save us from our sins. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: When Jenni and I got engaged we had this sweet guy in our church who had a photography studio. He invited us to the studio and took these pictures of us for our engagement and at our wedding gave us a huge portrait of ourselves. Now, I'm saying nothing, but we are not the kind of people to keep giant pictures of ourselves on our walls. So, we did what anyone would do. We started giving the picture away at Christmas parties as a white elephant gift. What's super funny is for years that picture would show up at different parties as a white elephant gift as someone regifted it… lol I was thinking about all that John did to bring the message and hope of Jesus into our world. You know he ended up dying because of his message, don't you? His head got severed from his body and grossly displayed as a party favor at a birthday party. Just sickening… John paid a price for the message of Jesus to enter the world. He gave us the gift of making the way for Jesus. b What if each of us this Christmas decided to regift the message in our own lives? b In what ways could you knock down barriers and open doors for the message of Jesus to get out in your world, your family, and your workplace? Here's a list of just a few practical ways I thought you could do this: Practical ways to regift the message of Jesus and prepare the way for others to know Him: Practice “love of their neighbor” Literally: bake cookies for neighbors, add a note about celebrating the birth of Jesus and invite them to church this Christmas Do a prayer challenge at work: Tell people you are taking a prayer challenge till Christmas. If they have something you could pray for, to text or leave you a note and you'll pray for them. Do a daily devotion with your kids: Read through the gospel of John with your kids over the next month and ask questions/talk about it together. Start a bible study at work: Send encouraging texts: For the next month send a daily encouraging scripture to friends, let them know they can opt-out any time. John made a way for Jesus' message and it changed the world, what if we regift Christmas this year!

Advent is a season of waiting in great expectation, a time of hopeful longing. What are people longing for more than anything else? Peace--Shalom--Wholeness and well-being. The peace that Jesus brings is far superior to the weak, passive version the world promises (John 14:27). We turn to Isaiah 2, 6, and 11 to discover three important aspects of the powerful, passionate peace of God that passes all understanding.

Rich and I discuss how he never gave up on his passion to play music. We also discuss his Christmas album.******* From humble and modest beginnings to redefining 60s and classic rock, Rich Chambers' musical story is not unlike that of countless other musicians, or anyone in any career for that matter. Discovering a passion for the guitar at age 10, and an even greater passion for songwriting at 14, he embarked on a life-long commitment to music and songwriting. Like any successful individual, he is all about commitment, dedication, hard work, maintaining perspective, and believing in himself. Chambers' journey has not been without its bumps though. After completing high school, he was so sure he would be the next big thing, until countless nights playing in many cheesy dives, for at best a round or two of cheap draught beer, taught him otherwise. It was then he made an important, life-changing decision—he went back to school, which eventually led to a bachelor's degree in English and later a master's degree in Humanities. As Chambers so enthusiastically always says, “education rocks!” Following on the heels of his successful 2020 Christmas album, Chambers has been consistently and methodically releasing new original music throughout 2021. His socially conscious rocker, “I'm So Tired,” came out in January, accompanied by a hard-hitting video brimming with thought provoking social commentary (the video continues to receive accolades from film festivals around the globe). This was followed in the spring with his mid-tempo, love gone wrong, “Sorry Isn't Good Enough.” His summertime release was “Summer Looks So Good On You,” a Beach Boys meets Katrina and the Waves fun and sing-alongable offering, which was followed by his fall release, “High School Can't Last Forever,” a rocker that merges the sounds of Buddy Holly and Green Day to explore the notion of what really constitutes youth and innocence. For winter 2021/22, Chambers has released “I Wonder,” an infectious, almost bubble gum pop/rock song that Chambers likes to simply call a “musical guilty pleasure.” Website: https://richchambers.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/RichChambersFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/santasrockinband******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaunaD1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/JOFRTBC0Xs8Have a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom©2021 Better To...Podcast with D. Tis the season for a special Christma episode! What could be more festive than reliving all of the wild, wonderful, and weird Khristmas Kards from the Kardahian Klan? Besides, never misspelling another word that so it starts with K, maybe? This week I look at the outer planets placements during some of the most infamous holiday cards from the Kamelot of Kalabasas, the reality TV family we love to hate watch. I'm dusting off my finest satin mermaid gown and my best Todd Kraines impression, because the reason for the season is clearly to snark on holiday cards other people bothered to send. This episode is the perfect break from family activities or to waste some time until we find out if Pete Davidson made the guest list for Kris's annual Xmas party. Happy Holidays to all, and to all- a Hulu series of dubious content.

This week's chapters of A Storm of Swords has us questioning everything! Edmure is cringy, we actually empathize with Lysa, a very sketchy letter comes from Winterfell, and the Freys make an offer that terrifies us. Davos is a badass and Raven finds herself relating to Stannis, oddly. Raven tells a story about being a stubborn stickler for the rules while working retail, and we find a word used by GRRM that may or may not be wildly offensive. People celebrate all kinds of things for different reasons and in different ways, but most of the time, people celebrate with people they love. In this episode Anna dives into looking at what Jesus says about loving others while we celebrate - while we feast and dine together. Guess what am I celebrating: I'm putting up fairy lights on my roof I'm looking for eggs in the garden I am blowing out candles on a cake I am eating a delicious feast When I turned 12, I organised my birthday party in the Easter holidays and invited 12 friends but and only 2 of my friends could come. It was really hard not to take it personally. I cried. I was devastated. I felt like no one liked me, I had no friends, I was not popular (this was really important to me). I rescheduled it and everyone could come, but the feeling was horrible. I will never forget feeling like I was left out like that. Luke 14:12-14 “When you give a dinner or a banquet, don't invite your friends and family and relatives and rich neighbours. If you do, they will invite you in return, and you will be paid back. When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. They cannot pay you back. But God will bless you and reward you when his people rise from death.” Inviting people to a celebration, dinner or banquet who are not going to give something back, something like love, good company, presents, entertainment?! That's crazy! Unheard of! But amazingly loving! Do you know anyone who is poor, crippled, lame or blind? Jesus is listing people in his day who didn't have any friends. Who is it today who has no friends? People who are bossy, mean, annoying? Can we invite them to our parties? It is much easier to stay where we feel comfortable - with people we get along with, people who are fun, easy to chat with, people who aren't strange or different from us. There was once a little girl in Kindergarten who was turning 5 and she was allowed 5 friends to celebrate with her. She thought of 4 girls and there was space for one more. There was a boy in her class who was often absent, wore an older style uniform that was different to everyone else's uniform and was always sad and alone at school, so she invited him. He didn't come, but she wanted him to feel included. Who was that girl? Yep, that was me. Why would Jesus ask us to include different kinds of people in our celebrations? John 13:34-35 “But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” Including people who are lonely and who don't have many friends is a really beautiful way to show them love in the way Jesus has commanded us to. Discussion Questions: Is there someone you know who does not like Christmas? Why don't they like it? What is something loving that you could do for them this Christmas so that they might not feel so sad at Christma? The world has been trained to think that spring and summer are the best times to sell a home, but is that true? While more sales do happen during these seasons than fall and winter, there are a few reasons why selling during the holidays is also a great opportunity. First, off-season buyers are more serious than peak-season buyers. These buyers need to move because they’ve been transferred into the market or they don’t have as much cash and their offers weren’t as strong in the spring and summer. Additionally, because there are fewer sellers during the colder months and fewer homes on the market, you’ll face less competition during the holiday season. “Because there are fewer sellers during the colder months and fewer homes on the market, you’ll face less competition during the holiday season.” Furthermore, the tasteful decor that pops up during the holiday season goes a long way toward putting buyers into a more positive mood when they walk through your home. On that note, here are a few tips to remember when decorating your home while it’s listed for sale: 1. Don’t block important selling features (e.g., the fireplace, stairs, or stain-glass windows)2. Tone down the size of your Christma tree3. Don’t leave wrapped gifts all over the place, and don’t leave expensive presents under the tree4. Use more splashes of red than green—red is more emotionally appealing5. Resist the urge to hang any banners and use greenery instead (I would encourage you to use artificial greenery so as not to set off any allergies)6. Display centerpieces made of pine cones and other wintery pieces from nature 7. Set out a plate of cookies on the counter8. Hire a home stager Lastly, remember that your first step toward a successful holiday home sale is hiring an experienced real estate agent with a plan. If you’d like to list your home now or you have any other real estate questions I can take care of, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to help you.

September 18, 2019 - Christma Rusch
Ho ho ho #stoppies, we're hoooome for the holidays! We've all been very bad boys this year and have been rightfully cursed with another lump of musical coal in our collective stockings, Smash Mouth's desperate 2005 Christma$ ca$h grab, 'The Gift of Rock'. Joining us to unwrap this precious 'gift' is our very own family, including the youngest Dunn brother Alex, "Dad for the People" Paul Dunn, and in lieu of Heather's actual blood relative we bribed our friend Brian to perform the role of her dad, because that makes about as much sense as this album does! Anyway, it's enough to bring shame upon our extended family and yours, as we hitch up our sleigh and roll merrily along through strained and soulless christmas covers, awful appropriative patois, and a hilariously detailed 'behind the music' history of the band Smashmouth courtesy of the Dunn Research Conglomerate. It's enough to make you throw a whole loaf of bread at Steve Harwell's forehead, which means it's a whole heckuva lot of fun. Merry Christmas!

In this 'Christmas' edition of Failure to Launch, we examine I-Man, a Scott Bakula Sci-Fi vehicle in which he learns the meaning of Christma- wait, no, he inhales a mysterious gas from space. After inhaling it, he finds he has been turned into Jolly Old Saint Nicho- whoops nope he gets blown up and miraculously recovers, as he is now immortal. Actually, this pilot has nothing to do with Christmas really, but it does have laser guns and a truck that falls off a cliff for SO LONG, so there's that. Merry Christmas! Arturo, Tim and Travis discuss our favorite holiday horror movies in this Christmas themed episode!
It's officially Christma... wait, no, it's not December, but it's past Thanksgiving. What does that mean? Holiday purgatory, a time to celebrate nothing. We also discuss our childhood show tour, brought to you by streaming services. Enjoy!
This is an episode for people who absolutely hate fingers. We discuss Public Apologies, the Yep Movement, the best production we've ever seen, Bobby Fish yelling like a big ol' goofus, a freakishly large heart, Alec keeps getting it all wrong, Otis Dosevish lifts a car, Sabatelli and Moss are a couple, and the best match we've ever seen on this show. If you don't want to celebrate Rusev's actual birthday, December 25th, then this isn't the show for you. SORRY, SUCKERS.
It is time to pop a couple of cold ones and enjoy the Christma cheer as our two brothers, Alan (from A Podcast With That One Guy and the Lo-Kut Krew Kast) and Thom (from The Mr. MMAction Podcast) provide their 11th #FilmCompanion as they sit back and watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989). They also present the 11th edition of 'The Wonderful World We Live In'. Film Synopsis: As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and the house decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark's employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs. 20:06 to 31:33 - The Wonderful World We Live In #11 31:38 to 2:01:55 - #FilmCompanion: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) More info? The first alcoholic drink is consumed at an average age of 12 in the USA. The earlier drinking begins, the greater risk of addiction and greater potential harm is to brain development. The human brain is not fully developed until around age 25. What can we do to protect our teens for binge drinking? It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition and about 24,000 people die every day of hunger. 5% of America's leftovers could feed 4 million people for a day. What else do we waste in America? Water, paper, everything. Santa had it right when his presents came in recycled newspaper. Cynthia Brian and Heather Brittany look at the enormous amount of waste in our country with ideas on what we can do about it. This week people who celebrate get busy making sure that their homes are festive and bright. Find out what the GoddessGals have planned that could spark your ideas.

Everybody loves to travel. But for every fantasy of the perfect vacation lurks the very real possibility of a journey gone haywire. In this episode, our team of world-weary travelers recount bizarre tales including a 50 hour bus ride filled with racial tension, a poodle and a bottle of Perrier, a sixteen year old crusty, hippie-punk passed out in the Jamaican mud at the Reggae Sunsplash, a pathetic Xmas yarn featuring a Blues Brothers cover band and a bus stuck on a snowy mountain pass, and a mad dash from Sacramento to San Francisco in a car falling apart mile by mile. Guests Include Anthony Bedard (musician, Hank IV), Jack Boulware (author, Sex American Style), Natalija Vekic (filmmaker, Lost and Found). Hosted by filmmaker Danny Plotnick.
