This week on the Ordinary Extraordinary Cemetery podcast Jennie and Dianne continue their fascinating discussion with author Pamela McColl about Elizabeth "Libbie" Custer, the resilient wife of General George Armstrong Custer. In part one, they explored her pioneering experiences living with Custer in the West.  Now, they're diving deeper into the incredible changes she witnessed during her lifetime - from the Civil War to the dawn of the 20th century, through World War I, and into the Great Depression. They examine how Libbie's own experiences as a widow fueled her mission to support others navigating life after the death of a beloved husband.  They also discuss how Christmas evolved into a cherished tradition after the Civil War, bringing people together during an Ordinary Extraordinary time of great change not only for America, but much of the world navigating new found identities.View this episode on YouTube!https://youtu.be/663DRer_nFk?si=V6gbPOpNJ5GVBobzNeed an Ordinary Extraordinary Cemetery Podcast tee, hoodie or mug? In this episode of GoGreenfields, River and Terran are party planning, but it's not really warm enough to host an outdoor party, so why not bring the outdoors in?  They planned a camping party that could be enjoyed by teenage guys who are craving the adventures of the outdoors, but don't really want to venture out in the cold Washington temperatures.  This would also be a great idea for kids' birthday parties too!   Indoor Camping Party Step #1: Campfire S'mores River and Terran started the planning by figuring out how they could achieve the ultimate camping snack inside.  While some people will make their smores in the microwave, the results are not the same.  So, the co-hosts started a fire in their indoor fireplace and roasted some marshmallows at the fireside.     After shooting, they discovered these awesome smokeless Tabletop campfires that could achieve the same results and be set up in the middle of a circle of tents or forts, so friends wouldn't be required to change location in order to roast marshmallows.   Indoor Camping Party Step #2: Invitations The second step was to design the party invitations.  A camping theme, of course, but River and Terran like to create their own invitations instead of buying from the store.  This is a great craft for kids and teens of all ages, and a great way to save a little money in the party planning process.  You can pick up thirty blank cards with envelopes for about six bucks on Amazon.   Indoor Camping Party Step #3: Balloons River and Terran opted for solid green balloons that suited their personality, matched the theme, and worked better for the intended age range of the guests.  However, for kids, they highly recommended these great camping-themed balloons.     You could blow up the balloons ahead of time, or make it part of the experience.  The co-hosts had a bit of fun with the balloons, competing to see who could blow up the balloons fastest, who could get the biggest balloon without popping it, and playing keep away while carrying balloons in their mouth.   Indoor Camping Party Step #4: Tent Space When River and Terran were shooting this episode, they were still trying to figure out how to layout and decorate the space.  They built forts and started to decorate the space, but decided that they needed to do a bit more research.  Ultimately, they found these Small Tents for Indoor Camping Experience on Amazon that would fit in the space.  Each tent accommodated two people in sleeping bags.  They invited friends to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows.  Ladders were brought in and the rest of the streamers were hung.  The tents were set up in a circle so the guys could visit long into the night.   Indoor Camping Party Step #5: Camp Games The last thing that was planned were the games that would be played.  Cards and board games were available as well, but River and Terran found that they could set up their cornhole boards in the hallway for a real camping game experience.  They bought the boards and refinished them with their own artwork.  If you want to design your own cornhole boards, you can buy these unfinished cornhole boards (with bags and carrying case).  Be sure to put a couple coats of white paint down first so your artwork really pops.   This party was a big hit, but we definitely want to hear your ideas!  So, send them our way:    Share your party ideas with us here: Facebook:  @gogreenfieldspodcast  Twitter: @GoGreenfields Instagram: @gogreenfieldsshow TikTok: GoGreenfieldsTwins   Recommended Products: Small Tents for Indoor Camping Experience Tabletop campfire camping-themed balloons unfinished cornhole boards  Thrive Market Chocolate   GoGreenfields is an Amazon affiliate and does receive a small percentage of sales made as a result of these recommendations.   This episode is brought to you by: Alitura Skin Care — the purest ingredients found in nature with a non-toxic promise to visibly transform your skin! Jan Carver started out doing a 10,000 a day step challenge and that led to a couch to 5 km run then a 10 km and the next thing Jan knew she was doing marathons. After 4 marathons Jan has decided to do the London marathon this year to make it number 5. Our very own Diane met Jan through something called the K times 365 projectin 2014. This group promotes staying active for 365 days preferably outside. Jan also talks to us about how for the first 12 weeks of running she only ran in the dark because she lacked confidence and didn't want anyone to see her. Soon that changed and as Jan gained more confidence she would run more and more. In 2018 Jan and her husband ran in a 100 miler, 24-hour team relay and on the last 10-mile lap they ran together. This event is named the Grim Reaper and the incredible thing is her longest race was a half marathon at this time, amazing. Now Jan runs with her run club and they meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and Wednesdays are now her non-negotiables, she seldom misses a run with her group. But Jan does, even more, she is now certified as a run coach and helps others achieve their goals, plus she leads new runners in couch to 5k's. Mental health is very big in her running groupand they connect mental health and running health together. With Covid, this is even more of a thing so running is very important to Jan. In order to help control some of her own anxiety Jan would go and sleep outside in a tent or hammock just to get away from everything. This helps Jan to feel less cabin fever and helps her to connect more with the outdoors. Put in some rock climbing and everything else that she does and it's easy to see Jan is a very motivated individual.

Facebook Twitter Instagram   The Outdoor Biz Podcast   Please give us a rating and review HERE   Show Notes First Exposure to the Outdoors I was exposed to the outdoors, thankfully by my parents at a very young age. My brothers and I were introduced to the outdoors camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, all sorts of outdoor activities. So I got introduced to that at a very young age. We're talking like elementary school, single-digit years old. It's been with me pretty much since I was born. Things we talked about The Tenting Life Happy Camper Radio Wisconsin State Parks Pie Iron Recipes Dutch Oven Recipes Tin Foil Recipes The Best Tent Camping Guide Coordinates for Murder Other Outdoor Activities Cycling Paddling Hiking Advice I think the main thing is to have a passion for it. I've seen a lot of people who want to start a blog about X, whatever that might be. Maybe it's the outdoors, maybe it's auto repair. But really they need to have a big passion for it. Where when you're not doing your day job, you're thinking about how can I do this thing that I love to do, whether that's doing it with friends or going out by yourself or exploring a new place you haven't been to, or just reading books and other websites on it. So that's the biggest thing. Find where that passion area lies. Because then you'll stick with it. You'll always find new material and you'll just find it fun. Kathy Newby is an Event Specialist at Abbey Party Rentals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kathy and Michelle started working together on events almost 2 decades ago! Kathy got her degree from the ‘school of hard knocks' - moved around a lot, has a ton of experience, and settled in the Bay Area and began her events career on the hospitality side. She started working for a big rental company in 1994, and eventually landed at Abbey. She is a networking guru, she gives back to the industry, mentors young people in the industry and she is a wealth of knowledge on all things rentals! Big Takeaways Tenting is intense! You have to think about dimensions, sunlight, flooring, lighting, generators, restrooms, connectors, weather...basically, if you need tenting for your outdoor wedding, you need to hire an experienced professional. Like Kathy! She talks about how to tent a wedding without breaking the bank - tricks of the trade to glam up a basic tent: lighting, swagging, pre-fab ceiling liners (as opposed to hand-pleated). Covering a pool - a flooring and rental company can do it! Plexiglass, staging, raised walkway above the pool, boarding it and putting astroturf down, lots of options. Backyard weddings, private estate events...just because you get a ‘free' space, doesn't mean you'll save money. In fact, typically, it costs more to transform a space into a venue. Michelle and Kathy break down the logistics for a 75 person backyard wedding...for example, a clear tent may be a hard NO, depending on the location and weather - they act like greenhouses and can get super hot and uncomfortable. Kitchen generators, lux porto potties, distances that the set up techs will have to load -in, permits, noise ordinances... There are many variables and everything is customized, so getting a price estimate isn't a simple formula. Plan B. The Bad Weather Plan. You have to decide this plan in advance (not a week out), and then 48 hours beforehand, you can decide if you're using the plan B or not. And then, fingers crossed. (A deposit will be required to hold the inventory, and have a crew standing-by.) Delivery and Strike - these times have to be arranged when you book your rentals. The prices depend on the time allotted and the crew/equipment needed. This can be expensive. Labor is the biggest cost in the rental industry. Just a quick example of basic inventory from the Abbey website - rental prices vary, but you can get an idea of overall pricing by checking the website Silver Chiavari Chair - $8/ea 3'x3' square of dancefloor - $15 60” round table - $10 Links we referenced Abbey Party Rentals SF website The Water CottageThe luxury portable restroom company Kathy recommends One True Love Vintage The vintage furntiure rentals and sister company Kathy works with at Abbey Kathy's Instagram Page @askforkathy Quotes “You don't have a normal 9-5 life. You're like, weekend city.” - Michelle, breaking the news to Kathy “I'm very passionate about what I do. I eat, live and breathe this industry. If I'm not at events on the weekends, I'm in the office, or I'm meeting clients, or I'm going to networking events, or finding new venues that we can work with.” - Kathy, on her 24/7 gig “Use us as a resource if there is something that you really want but don't know how to source it...pick our brains, walk our warehouse. See something and think, hey, maybe I can repurpose this.” - Kathy, on how a rental company can join the collaboration team for your wedding “Remember about the special needs of your clients.” - Kathy, discussing the virtues of port-o-potties “I'm not going to tell you if it looks ugly. That's not my job. My job is to make you happy.” - Kathy dropping some TRUTH Get In Touch Let us know if you have any questions you need answered on the show or if you want to share your own wedding planning experiences! Retirement Talk for Boomers, Seniors, and Retirees

Retiring brings with it many changes in our life. Some we must accept. Others we can reject and refuse. Tenting and biking are two activities that I have seen lasting well past entering retirement. We might want to give them a try.

BWCACAST- High Definition Boundary Water Canoeing

For those of you new to camping and maybe even for you veterans out there, we have put together this little howto video showing the basic principles behind setting up a tent.  Now there are a wide variety of tents out there and each have their own specific way to be set up.  Many tents however follow the same basic steps. Here are a few things we take into consideration when setting up our tent.  First off our tent is a self standing tent which means it doesn't require tent stakes to stay upright.  There are tents on the market that do require stakes, so when shopping for a tent keep this in mind.  One advantage to having a tent that doesn't require stakes is if you are camping in an area that is very rocky, or the ground is extremely firm, you may not be able to put in stakes at every campsite.  With a self standing tent you will still be able to camp in these locations without too much trouble barring any crazy winds. The first thing we look for when choosing a tenting location is how flat the surface is, and if there are rocks or roots sticking up that might be painful to sleep on during the night.  We try to find areas that are as smooth as possible. If there is a slant to the ground we plan on sleeping on we try to position our on the slant so our heads and feet are lined up with the slant.  This way if any sliding occurs during the night you will slide into the end of the tent instead of into your fellow campers. After the tent has been assembled and the rain fly has been put on, we do a quick check on the edges to ensure our ground cloth isn't sticking out anywhere.  If the ground cloth is visible any rain that does fall on it will be taken right under your tent and may lead to a wet night for sleeping. We hope you've found this episode helpful.  If you have any added ideas, or questions, please post them in the comment section below. Thanks for watching.
