When education meets determination, big things happen. Nyakio Greko's entrepreneurial journey is no exception.    During our conversation, she takes us back to her childhood growing up in a Kenyan-American household, instilled with the values of hard work, education, and giving back. Despite initial shyness, Nyakio found her voice and bravely struck out on her own in her mid-20s to launch her first beauty brand celebrating African ingredients.   With fearless determination and a mere $172,000 in capital raised from credit cards and loved ones, Nyakio built her brand from the ground up while working tirelessly to ship orders and provide customer service herself. Though the path was difficult, with many starts and stops, her resilience shone through. In 2017, Nyakio's brand was acquired by Unilever, providing her with invaluable experience before she left to co-found her next ventures with her current business partner.   Today, Nyakio is the co-founder of Thirteen Lune and Relevant Skin — companies centered on inclusivity by amplifying BIPOC-owned beauty brands from around the world.    Her vision extends far beyond just business success. Ken interviews Nyakio Grieco, Co-founder of Thirteen Lune and Founder of Relevant: Your Skin Seen on this flight of The Retail Pilot - Leaders & Legends.Nyakio (pronounced Neh-Kay-Oh) Grieco is a beauty entrepreneur and advocate for clean, inclusive beauty that suits all skin types, tones, and needs. As a veteran beauty founder and trusted industry voice, Nyakio has launched successful businesses: her award-winning brand nyakioTM, based on her family's Kenyan roots and beauty secrets that launched in 2002, and inclusive beauty e-commerce destination, Thirteen Lune, launched with cofounder Patrick Herning in 2020. Thirteen Lune launched as the first of its kind, e-commerce destination designed to inspire the discovery of beauty brands created by BIPOC founders that resonate with people of all colors. Thirteen Lune has since partnered with retailer JC Penney for inclusive beauty shop-in-shop locations in over 600 stores nationwide.Continuing her commitment to inclusive beauty Nyakio created Relevant: Your Skin Seen, a clean, science-led skincare brand that works for all skin tones and types. Working with top labs to ensure a diverse mix of chemists, Nyakio formulated each product with superfruits and actives in efficacious percentages to create products that truly perform. Most recently, the brand expanded into the cosmetics category with six color and complexion products. All products in the range are formulated with skincare benefits and serve and celebrate every skin tone, while hyper prioritizing consumers who have been underserved. Most recently, Nyakio Grieco has been honored with the CEW 2023 Female Founder Award, the Beauty Matter 2023 Future50 Award and included on the Inc. Magazine 2023 Female Founders 200 List. Key takeaways from the interview include:1.    Cultural Heritage and Beauty: Nyakio Grieco's journey into the beauty space was deeply influenced by her Kenyan heritage, particularly her grandmother's beauty secrets rooted in natural ingredients like coffee beans and sugar cane. This connection to her family's traditions and the use of earth-derived elements shaped her early interest in skincare.2.    Transition from Entertainment to Beauty: Despite initially pursuing a career in sports and entertainment, Grieco found herself drawn to the beauty industry through her work with actresses and exposure to beauty products. She noticed a gap in the market for products celebrating Africa's rich resources and heritage, leading her to pivot her career towards beauty entrepreneurship.3.    Challenges of Entrepreneurship: Grieco faced significant challenges as a black female founder, especially in accessing capital and navigating the beauty industry's landscape. Despite setbacks and failures, she persevered, leveraging mentorship, resourcefulness, and industry connections to keep her brand afloat and eventually succeed.4.    Creation of ThirteenLune: Following the acquisition of her brand by Unilever, Grieco co-founded Thirteen Lune with Patrick Herning, aiming to create an inclusive beauty retail platform highlighting products by black and brown founders. The platform aims to debunk stereotypes and provide visibility for diverse beauty brands, challenging the notion that these products are only for specific demographics.5.    Expansion and Future Vision: Despite the rapid growth of Thirteen Lune through partnerships with JCPenney and other retailers, Grieco remains focused on expanding the platform's direct-to-consumer presence and nurturing its brand identity. She sees opportunities for standalone stores, global expansion, and further development of their private label brand, Relevant. The goal is to continue championing diversity in the beauty industry while nurturing and growing the brands within the Thirteen Lune ecosystem. 6.    Thirteen Lune's Business Model: Unlike a typical marketplace, Thirteen Lune takes a physical position on inventory by importing products into the country, owning the goods, and then selling them to customers. They do not drop ship and prioritize owning the customer experience, ensuring consistency and brand representation across channels.7.    Launch of Relevant: Nyakio discusses launching Relevant as an opportunity to realize her dream brand. With Relevant, she aims to address market gaps and ensure all consumers feel seen at shelf, especially those with melanin-rich skin. The brand focuses on inclusivity, leveraging expertise in formulations and product testing.8.    Expansion and Distribution: Relevant's expansion into Sephora UK demonstrates growth and opportunity for the brand. Grieco emphasizes the importance of partnerships and distribution channels, such as JCPenney, to reach a wider audience and fulfill the brand's mission of inclusivity.9.    Marketing Strategies: Authenticity is central to Thirteen Lune and Relevant's marketing approach. Grieco emphasizes telling authentic stories that resonate with underserved consumers. In the early stages, they prioritized organic strategies over paid marketing and leveraged partnerships to amplify their message.10. Challenges and Opportunities: Grieco highlights the challenges of access to capital for people of color founders, despite the immense potential of diverse businesses. However, she remains optimistic about the shifting landscape and sees opportunities for growth through strategic partnerships, investments, and technological advancements.

Cheekbone Beauty's Jenn Harper on launching a beauty brand with no experience

Launching Cheekbone Beauty in 2016 was a bit of a serendipitous moment for founder Jenn Harper. It all started in Jan. 2015 when she dreamed about "Native little girls with their brown little skin and rosy cheeks, covered in lip gloss." The dream, paired with Harper's recent sobriety journey and deeper discovery about her lineage and Ojibwe culture, inspired her to create a beauty brand.  The journey to becoming a beauty founder was no easy feat for Harper. Until 2016, Harper's professional career was rooted in the food industry, specifically seafood. Though she had no formal experience in beauty, her determination to launch a successful brand and celebrate her indigenous culture were her biggest motivators. Through thorough research and sourcing, Harper launched Cheekbone Beauty in Nov. 2016 as a DTC brand. "Going back, of course, I'd love to do things differently," Harper shared on the latest episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast. "However, I learned so much from starting things the way [I did], by being super scrappy about how we were going to build and learning how to [launch a business in real time]."  In 2019, after Cheekbone Beauty's launch, Harper went on "Dragon's Den," a fundraising show similar to "Shark Tank." She did not accept an offer, but the exposure helped catapult Cheekbone Beauty's brand awareness. In addition to her experience on "Dragon's Den," Harper connected with Raven Capital, the first Indigenous investment fund in the world. The company initially offered Harper $350,000 to transition her business from being a private white label to creating its own products and packaging. Thanks to the funding, in March 2020, Cheekbone Beauty launched with its first proprietaryproduct, the Sustain Lipstick.  As Harper looks to the future, she said she's excited about Cheekbone Beauty's direction. In 2021, the brand launched in Sephora Canada. And most recently, Cheekbone Beauty secured a partnership with Thirteen Lune — it will be available to shop on the marketplace's website and in 600 J.C. Penney locations. Apart from retail expansion, Cheekbone Beauty is also committed to innovation on the sustainability front through its packaging and clean ingredients.

Lisa is joined by Joann Zehenni who created a successful skincare company, Gemini Beauty, before graduation high school! Now an 18 year old college freshmen, Joann Zehenni is running her thriving business from her dorm room with products sold on her website, Thirteen Lune, & JC Penny! Joann's story:In 2012, I learned that my dad and older sister were diagnosed with Lupus, an inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues. I was surprised when I discovered that I have a borderline case of Lupus myself. One of the most common symptoms is the facial “butterfly rash” and extremely sensitive skin. Combating sensitive skin was an issue for all of us. Especially growing up in sunny southern California where I was always swimming and playing outside, leaving my skin dry and sunburned regularly. After years of trying different sunblocks and moisturizers, my skin remained irritated and red. Learning how to navigate which products to use was difficult until my grandmother began to create her own homemade, fruit and vegetable-based face masks that I would use after spending time in the the sun. She would find ingredients in her garden such as strawberries and cucumbers to craft soothing and moisturizing facial treatments. My family's struggles with sensitive skin, as well as my grandmother's natural approach in using fruits and vegetables in skincare, served as a catalyst to pursue my dream of starting a skincare company. My goal is to provide a range of products that are accessible to a variety of skin types, with a particular focus on sensitivity, in hopes all find confidence and comfort in their skin. After many years of research and development under the advisement from multiple chemists in the cosmetics industry, I am so excited for you all to try my products!Thank you to our sponsor for this episode Just Thrive Probiotics. you can get 15% off sitewide at justthrivehealth.com with promo code: Natsav15. Today we're learning from Rosie Jane Johnston, the founder of By Rosie Jane. By Rosie Jane was founded in 2010 by celebrity makeup artist Rosie Jane Johnston, an Aussie who has made her home in LA. Each fragrance, formulated by Rosie herself, is free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and phosphates and housed in recycled and recyclable packaging. Her perfumes and body care products are refreshingly simple and ideal for daily wear using the highest quality fragrance oils. We cover her journey to building this brand into a 7 figure company stocked in the likes of Sephora and Thirteen Lune, and the campaign that's driving her customer acquisition right now. The thing that really struck me in this episode is Rosie's relentless pursuit in business and getting what she wants, to get By Rosie Jane to where it is today. She really shows us how a no now doesn't mean a no forever, and it's all about being open for when that time comes for the no to turn into a yes. That's where your courage and conviction are. If you are not doing something you truly believe in, you truly love, you're not going to stay the course. Whatever that is for you, has to be your driving force. There's something within your entrepreneurial spirit. That's just in you. It takes 10 years to reach overnight success. And in that time you need to have that persistence and true conviction in what you're doing. When we look at legacy brands, there are a few key things key they are getting really right. They have these incredible “whys”. They have a lot of struggles in the beginning. They've had to change and move with the time and have great failures and still come back, which is so important to have in the entrepreneurial world. After selling her skin-care brand Nyakio Beauty to Unilever in 2017, Nyakio Grieco set her sights on beauty retail with the launch of Thirteen Lune in 2020. As multiple beauty retailers were pledging to offer at least 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned brands, she came up with a “90/10” model for Thirteen Lune: 90% of brands are BIPOC-owned, with 10% owned by those who demonstrate allyship. With $1 million in funding from celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow and Sean Combs and a $3 million seed round led by Fearless Fund, Thirteen Lune is in the process of taking over all of JCPenney's former Sephora locations. It also stocks Grieco's new skin-care venture, Relevant, which was launched in 2022. Physical retail is a big part of Grieco's vision for Thirteen Lune, which will be launching its first standalone physical store early this year in Los Angeles. In this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Grieco shared her success story from the inspiration of her first brand launched in 2002 to her current beauty ventures.

If you love something in this episode please do consider sharing it on Instagram stories and tagging us or leaving us a review to help other ears find us. I'm so grateful for each and every one of you who does this. In today's episode, I'm sharing with you 5 ways to create the perfect relaxing bath. On these cold winter nights, there's nothing I want more than to slip into a sea of bubbles and bath salts. I wanted to record this podcast episode to share with you some of my favorite bubble bath products, and my bathtime practices that pick up steam over the winter months.  2:00 - #1: Bath salts! Adding bath salts means I'm able to give my muscles a bit of a break and refresh. My favorite bath salt brand is Kneipp, especially the Kneipp Goodbye Stress Rosemary and Mint Mineral Bath Salt is one of my all-time favorites for everyday use. It's an incredible blend of essential oils and helps to clear your mind and quiet overactive thoughts. 4:00 - #2: Bath bombs from Lush Cosmetics, especially Rose Jam, which is perfect for sensitive skin. It includes rose oil, rose absolute, lemon oil, geranium oil, and shea butter. My second favorite bath bomb from Lush is the Lemon Crumble bubbleroon which has an uplifting citrus-y scent and is packed with fair-trade cocoa butter, Sicilian lemon oil, and a shea butter center that conditions and softens dry skin.  7:00 - #3: The ‘Be Well' set from Thirteen Lune comes with a candle, bath/body oil, and a luxe bath salt. I use the full set to create the ultimate pampering experience through this edit of products. As part of the set, you get a Satya + Sage meditation candle infused with amber and clove. It also comes with the Senteurs du' Orient bath salts and the Elixa Bath + Body serum. The body serum leaves behind a luscious, dewy texture without feeling greasy on the skin. Thirteen Lune is an eCommerce destination designed to inspire the discovery of beauty brands created by Black and brown founders. They do a great job giving each brand a platform to engage a wider audience, and I adore the company so much. 9:40 - #4: Babo Botanicals 3-in-1 Eucalyptus Remedy bubble bath! I keep a family-size bottle of this stuff in my bathroom at all times. It does triple duty as a bubble bath, body wash, AND shampoo. Babo has a lot of fragrance-free products, which are perfect for children with sensitive skin. The eucalypics remedy helps to soothe and calm my skin. For everyday comfort, the Babo Botanicals Eucalyptus Remedy is something I can't imagine going without. 11:25 - #5: Alaffia Everyday Shea Bubble Bath! It serves ups a creamy, moisturizing bath full of bubbles. Founded in 2003, Alaffia continues to redefine hte natural products industry through its values in beauty, empowerment, and equality. The brand boasts dozens of products from body washes to cleaners, lotions for babies, calming balms, everything. In 2018, Alaffia increased access to its products by adding 2,500 stores nationwide. I like to buy my Alaffia via the Allure Store in New York City.  LINKS TO PRODUCTS AND EPISODES MENTIONED: Bri Books episode: How to Create a Relaxation Routine at Home Kneipp Goodbye Stress Rosemary and Mint Mineral Bath Salt Lush Cosmetics Rose Jam bubbleroon Lush Cosmetics Lemon Crumble bubbleroon Thirteen Lune ‘Be Well' Set Babo Botanicals 3-in-1 Eucalyptus Remedy bubble bath Alaffia Everyday Shea Bubble Bath  The Allure Store in New York City

Nyakio Grieco is the founder of Nyakio™, a collection of award-winning premium skincare products inspired by beauty secrets she discovered through her family, friends, and world travels. Nyakio is a first-generation American of Kenyan descent. She grew up in Norman, where her father was the Professor of African Studies at the University of Oklahoma – her alma mater. Upon graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Business Marketing, Nyakio moved to Los Angeles to work in the entertainment industry. She held positions at Creative Artists Agency, Elephant Walk, and 3 Arts Entertainment. Nyakio, however, was passionate from a young age about beauty. Her interest in beauty, coupled with a yearning to be an entrepreneur, prompted Nyakio to thoroughly research the cosmetics industry, leading her to the realization that while many cultures were represented, the sophistication of Africa was missing. She decided to not only fill the void in the market but also honor her heritage by bottling Africa's timeless beauty traditions, as well as traditions from across Asia, Europe, and India. Nyakio partnered with Sundial Brands, a subsidiary of Unilever, to develop her skincare line and bring global beauty secrets of natural ageless beauty to the U.S. market. She curated her family's recipes and translated cultural traditions from 13 countries, incorporating them into nakio™, which is handmade with ethically and sustainably sourced natural ingredients from around the world, that have been used for generations for their hydrating, revitalizing, soothing, and anti-aging benefits. Nyakio's authentic story and one-of-kind natural skincare products are must-haves for Hollywood's elite. In 2020, Nyakio realized that beauty brands founded by black and brown founders were underrepresented, so she founded Thirteen Lune. An online beauty marketplace that highlights black and brown-founded beauty brands that resonate with all skin colors. Nyakio lives in Los Angeles with her husband, renowned sculptor David Grieco, daughter Lulu, son Rocco, and dog Summer.    @nyakio @nyakiobeauty  @thirteenlune
