POPULARITY
Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.

Welcome to the Bonus recording of Episode 11. More stories to tell by Jon Irabagon. The recording by the group, Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Blue, the note-for-note recreation of Miles Davis' classic album is “A work of conceptual jazz art,” writes Bandcamp. The listening public's response varied considerably but suffice it to say that Jon as well as his bandmates had to deal with substantial internet rage, including death threats. But not to let that totally color the experience, Jon says there were many positive emails about the recording and the process. The way Jon tells the story details a tale that will live on for ages. This bonus track also includes Jon Irabagon recounting the many years it took for him to transcribe most of the recorded solos of sax giants John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. We talk about his recording Dr. Quixotic's Traveling Exotics, which we both consider as perhaps his best work largely because of with whom he records. The personnel on this album are phenomenal: Luis Perdomo, piano, Yasushi Nakamura, bass, Rudy Royston, drums, and Tom Harrell on trumpet. And, of course, Jon Irabagon is on alto sax. This is one helluva recording, we both agreed. I did not think our conversation would have been complete without touching base about Jon's good friend Sylvain Rifflet from Paris with whom Jon recorded two outstanding albums, Perpetual Motion and Rebellion(s). And if you wondered what is in Jon's future, he gives a full accounting of where he's moving forward. So, buckle up for this ride. Jon Irabagon, a tale of tales. The pandemic has given trumpet player and composer Tim Hagans a chance to step away from the physicality of the trumpet and focus on seeking new paths for his music. In this episode of LINER NOTES Tim speaks about preparing for an upcoming gig in Europe after not playing with other musicians for nearly two years, as well as his stunning new recording, A Conversation, featuring Germany's NDR Big Band.
In the early days of jazz, bands larger than a septet were called an orchestra. Nowadays jazz orchestras and big bands are much larger than that, like those we feature in our final instalment of our mini-series dedicated to (mostly new and upcoming) releases by big bands and orchestras which can be found at the intersection of beauty, fun and mischief. The playlist features: The Louis Cole Big Band [pictured]; Jazzrausch Bigband; Brussels Jazz Orchestra; Chris Potter Underground Orchestra; Django Bates, Norbotten Big Band; Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra; Michael Moore; Tim Hagans; Terraza Big Band; Webber/Morris Big Band; Andrew D'Angelo's DNA Orchestra; Gard Nilssen Supersonic Orchestra. Hip-BoneMusic's monthly interview series, "Bone2Pick". December 2015: How better to celebrate the holidays and close out 2015 than a stimulating conversation with one of the most inventive, creative and dynamic trumpeters of any generation, the transcendent Tim Hagans. Tim sits down with Michael for an open conversation on anything and everything, including his tenure with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, touring and recording with the likes of Dexter Gordon, Thad Jones, Joe Lovano and Bob Belden, his love of the Cincinnati Reds and disdain for the designated hitter, his 15 years as artistic director of the Norrbotten Big Band, his work with the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble, his legendary approach to chromatic improvisation and his thoughts on the American political system. Enjoy! hip-bonemusic.com
Bob Belden wrote this music for a 69 piece orchestra to portray the life of Elizabeth Short aka "The Black Dahlia". Her full story is on the web but the music can stand on it's own. Moody, introspective and sometimes dream, exotic and exciting. This huge project features work by trumpeters Tim Hagans and Lew Soloff, saxophonists Lawrence Feldman, Mike Migliore, Joe Lovano and Bob Belden and trombonist Conrad Herwig and contributions by several pianists, Kevin Hays, Marc Copeland and many more. A great piece of orchestral mood music at it's best tracing this story. A masterpiece of orchestration and writing. Kudos to Bob Belden!
