When was the last time you made a really big purchase? Do you remember what kind of thought, if any, went into it? Before spending a lot of money on something, most of us will take some time to reflect beforehand. Why are we making this purchase? Is it worth the money? How will what we're buying serve us today and in the future? These are all very normal questions to ask yourself. This logic is, of course, applied when purchasing vehicles. Everyone who needs a car, needs it for their own individual reasons. The purpose that the vehicles serve varies from individual to individual, so even if we all buy the same car, we're all buying something a little bit different. In this episode, Ed Bernardon asks the question, “what are we buying” when it comes to our vehicles. To answer this, he's looking back on conversations with three different guest experts who all shared their insight on shifting trends in mobility and what people are really interested in when it comes to vehicles and getting around. For most people buying a used car is an unpleasant experience that they only go through because they have to.All the haggling and sometimes ‘clever' misrepresentation of the vehicle's value add up to create a bad experience. And buying a new car isn't a great experience either, especially when you consider the drastic depreciation right after driving off the parking lot.None of the two happens because it's impossible to get value for money when buying a car. It happens because the murky process benefits the salespeople involved by allowing them to take advantage of their customers. In this episode, the first part out of two, Ed Bernardon interviews Toby Russell, founder and former CEO of Shift. Consumers want to browse, shop, and pay for items like coffee, clothes without friction. Toby discusses how Embedded FinTech allows customers to finance their cars, get prequalified for a loan, select and purchase an auto loan, and even buy vehicle protection plans and gap insurance without leaving their app. He'll also dive into how embedded fintech will transform industries and why more brands should take the Embedded FinTech approach. One of the largest areas of the consumer sector is a haggle system that actively discriminates. Toby speaks about how incorporating ML and a financial stack into an eCommerce platform is standardizing industry pricing, allowing more people to access real-time crediting decisions, and how embedded payments open up auto purchases to more people.  As payments become more digital both online and offline, Embedded Finance will become a new business model for sellers. This will accelerate in a Web3 environment.  Conclusion:  As a retailer - evaluate your business model. As a finance company- evaluate your Tech. As a consumer - expect better.

Toby Russell, the Founder and Co-CEO of Shift, is driving transformation in a market that has long been associated with terrible customer experiences and a low level of trust:the used-car sales market. Despite warnings that you needed a miracle to scale a car-sales business, Russel founded Shift with a philosophy that exceptional customer experience could make a difference. On this episode of Business X factors, he reveals how Shift has found a way to radically improve experiences in buying used-cars, the lessons he learned from his previous venture, and the challenges he met on the road to offer a seamless, hassle-free purchasing experience for customers.   Main Takeaways:  Poor customer experience = opportunity: When a buying experience is terrible, there's a strong chance that consumers are hungry for something new and different. Work back from what customers need and look for gaps. Examine the customer's end-to-end experience and design a system that delivers everything the customer needs. Customer experience as priority No. 1.: In many businesses, customers or product quality are sacrificed in deference to the bottom line. This alienates current customers and puts you at odds with prospective customers before they even walk through your door. Happy customers - the kind that will return and recommend you to others - are customers that feel confident in their purchase. Take out the guesswork for your customer, provide them with a high-quality product at a fair price that they can trust.  When changing a massive industry, find ways to differentiate yourself: Making waves in an established industry - especially one with a bad reputation - is no easy task. To avoid getting seen in the same light, find ways to stand out. For Shift, this meant not only committing to providing a great customer experience, but also getting creative with how consumers could engage with the company (i.e. online).---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. For over a decade, Hyland has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms, leading the way to help people get the information they need when and where they need it. We talk to Toby about his first experiences on a movie set - working with The Who on his father's film, 'Tommy' (1975) - and discuss Ken Russell's attempts to make his own kung fu movie.
